Hi all.
Finally got my e-mail saying my Nexus One is on its way, yipeee..
Does googlemaps turn by turn software work here?, or even the android co-pilot 8?
What are you xda members using?
Thanks in advance everyone.
google maps navigation works, dont know about the others.
Really? Are you sure?
Mine just gives directions and draws the route on the map.
Yes, of course it does turn by turn.
Thanks..

Does googlemaps work like tomtom etc, i.e does it speak and say "at the next junction turn left" etc.

yes, and it has Text to Speech, meaning it will speak street names. It also has live traffic and such.
You should probably know you need a data plan for this, because google maps are loaded on-the-fly and are not stored on memory (except your most recent places which are cached)

Google Navigation only works if you're in the US. If the device detects you're anywhere else it will only bring up the standard maps app, so you need a 3rd party one (unless someone hacks it, assuming it's hackable given that it requires data off the net to work.. if google don't have navigation data for timbuktu it won't work there whatever you do..).
Awesome..

I was worried about having the N1 and no sat-nav software for a couple of months...
Is yours a US or International N1? and does it have pinch zoom?
im in US. no pinch zoom because multitouch is disabled in the US.
I didn't think I was imagining the lack of a full navigator in google maps (I'm UK based)
I have co-pilot for when I'm roaming outside of the US.
Works fine.
Anyone using TomTom Australia on Nexus one? If so, how feature rich is this version of TomTom?
- Is it using Sensis map?
- Does it provide overspeeding audio-warning for ALL roads, or at least 99.9% of the roads?
- Does it audio- warn you when approaching speed cameras and red light?
- Does it audio-warn you when approaching schools, or at least POI selected.
Info please..

Hi Henchman.
Which version (i.e. build number) of co-pilot 8 are you using on your nexus one?

Someone in here wrote that Copilot live8 isn't compatible with N1 yet.
That is not correct, it is.

That was me, and I still can't activate copilot on my hero. The problem might be that I have an extra maps license (US+EU installed). I'll post updates if I get anything out of copilot support...
PS: I of course installed the newest version from the market.
I went from G1 to N1 no problem.

Actually, international GMaps turn-by-turn hack has been out for quite some time. It just tricks Google into thinking you're just getting directions drawn on the map, then translates that into navigation data. Works perfectly, except the bar at the top that shows your next turn is blank. So, Google doesn't have nav data for timbuktu, but you can get direction data for it, and that's good enough for the hack to translate to nav data. Gotta love XDA, don't you?
By the way, I don't know if the hacked Maps for international nav has been ported to the N1 yet or not, but it is relatively simple. I'll talk to someone and see if we can't get it working soon.
Any navigation software for Android which supports Sweden cities?
I am looking for a navigation software which provide Navigation in Sweden. Specially I am looking for Navigation support in the following cities:
-Gothenburg City
-Stockholm City
-Vasteras
-Jonkoping
-Uppsala
Thanks.
Has anyone installed Google Maps 4 on their HD2? Observations?

Well timed, just updated half an hour ago
Much the same really. Just seems to add Buzz and move a couple of options around. Nothing special
Street view is now much better, it finally allows you to pan up/down as well as left/right.

Street View ???? How do you activate it? I haven't seen an option for it anywhere.

This feature was already present in google maps 3.3.1.
P.s.: buzz seems interesting.
Actually I could not find anything new
You access streetview by holding anywhere .. box with address will popup .. you click that .. and then you can select streetview from details about the place.

Buzz is new, other than that I think it's the same old (unless the Wikipedia layer is also new - haven't noticed it before anyhow).
It'll be very interesting to see what Google's plans are for Buzz in the future. It's a rather cool app/idea as is.
Hmm.. The GPS accuracy seems to have improved..
Also when you tap on a particular point on a map.. it loads info about that place in a pop up..

That was in previous version .. that is nothing new.
Buzz .. I see .. well .. we'll see
hmm
I dont understand, how do u activate the street view function?
Tap and hold a point on the map and a balloon will pop-up with options. It may take a second or two to appear but a link to Streetview will appear in that list IF streetview is available in the area that you are looking at.
I haven't noticed anything new (other than Buzz) but the pinch-to-zoom feature still lacks accuracy. The point on the map I'm looking at (for instance, my location) always moves off to the top-right as I zoom in or out.
Since the zoom is not fluent, I see no point in pinch-zooming. Buttons works just as well.
Actually starting with this version I'm seeing the app use the integrated compass to indicate heading.
I tried installing that special GPS driver to get the compass to work in GMaps a few days ago and couldnt get it working so uninstalled it... but this version of GMaps just did it on its own!

That too is not new. Just the Buzz I'm afraid.
Hmm...I have Buzz in my gmail, but just can't get Buzz to appear in Google Maps. Updated and logged in, but where do I have to go to received or create a Buzz?

You don't have whole Buzz .. only map related Buzz. You can turn it on in Layers. New icon will appear to add new map-Buzz. Generally you mark some point on the map, you add comment to it, and then all your followers can see that point too, if they add Buzz layer.

No. I wish google made new version using 3D acceleration, for both smooth zooming and streetview (or even navigation as it is on Android). I hope such version is in progress. On the other hand, calling this version new major makes me think that they don't take WM platform much seriously.

You need to activate Buzz on your gmail account first I think.
Just seen this thread over in the Desire section - looks like Navigation is working in the UK now without needing to hack maps etc!
Quick test shows it appears to be working fine, haven't been out anywhere but it's giving locations, step by step directions etc!
Anyone else confirmed?
Holy cr*p it does seem to be doesn't it?
I'm stuck in work at the moment, but the navigation option has appeared and I can get it to launch. May have to go for a drive at lunch just to test it
Can anyone confirm it is working? I would LOVE to ditch Co-pilot.
I really hope it isn't an error on Google's part, which they are shortly going to correct and take it away again!?
Yeah, the option has appeared, I cant get a GPS signal tho as im stuck inside at work too.
Awesome update
It is working on my unrooted nexus one. It warns it is BETA version but who cares as Google always beta anyway. Version 4.1.1(#4156)
I did not even realise from the last update they had enabled it. No mention of it
How do i get to the turn bu tyrn navigation? When going to car home, navigation, then enter the end point, then i get some driving directions i can either see on a map, or as text, but i dont get that real turn på turn navigation, is there something you should activate or something like that?
Iam from Denmark btw, i wanted to test out if it maybe was opened to other parts of Europe aswell.
Exciting! Want to test it.
When I edge my chair closer to the window and start waving my phone towards the sky, people look at me nervously.

there should an option name "Navigate" just above the "directions". Ensure you have version 4.1.1

Nope dont seem like it, i do not have that navigate option, so it looks like it is only the UK they have opened for. I have the newest maps update, and running stock rom on my nexus one.

Working for me . Running CM 5.0.5.3.
I tried via Google Maps first of all and the option wasnt there, so I installed Nav Launcher from the market and that seems to generate directions.

Thank you for the link.
Works for me, running stock Google Nexus One: Great!!!
(And that GM does directions for Bus/train as well as walking - bleeedin' amazing!!)
Cheers!
Lodger
PS But thanks again to Brut for his hack that made it work on the old version of Google Maps..)
can confirm its working here too.
In UK with latest Cyanogen on N1.
Been using CoPilot so far which has been ok, but id like to see how google's fair.
This is very cool and it has been released by google quicker than I thought it would have been. I haven't used it for a long journey but compared to the hacked version it seems to tell you the instructions before the junction rather than after so good work google. This is some nice proof that google is working hard to improve nexus one. One other note is my version says htc passion and nexus one and it also has my locale as eng (uk).
Awesome, that's [brut] Maps and Nav Launcher gone from my phone.
Great work, Google!
Yup, working on mine too.
The voice search is superb, just tap the voice search button on the Google search bar, then say "Navigate to" followed by the destination...
Yay. That's the tomtom in the dustbin as soon as my car mount arrives.
Navigation looks really good.. street names too, which was a surprise.
if i try and use the google maps application i get force close every time it searches for directions it works if i use nav launcher though...anyone got any ideas?
im using latest cm with nextheme and avs kernel...
thanks
edit: sorry nvm guys, this is already a known problem. hit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667618 if anyone else has the same problem
It works, IT WORKS!!!!

As you might have heard, Google held a press conference last week. Out of it came this little gem. Google Voice Actions, not to be confused with “Google Voice” Actions, improves tremendously on Android voice commands, which to say the least, were near non-existent. You were pretty much just limited to doing a google search or inputting text in a text box. Not anymore, with Google Voice Actions, you’ll be able to issue a plethora of commands to your Android phone. I have to say, this is WAY better than on the iPhone.
Google Voice Acions Commands, Video Demo, and Download
Nothing I didn't know but its a good showcase of the capabilities.
Suck on them apples Steve jobs
I was amazed and bewildered by how HORRIBLE the HTC voice command was in the beginning, especially considering how great google voice search worked.
I've been using the new one a lot the last few days and I am equally amazed by how GREAT the new version works!
ba ba ba ba ba, I'm lovin it!
Just remember that you have to be connected to the internet in order for the voice commands to work, they use the google voice servers. While they are fast as hell and work amazingly fast even over a 1x connection, if you have no network, you have no google voice actions.

Ah, the Achilles heel of Google's voice interaction. Though I have to say, there are very few times when I am out of signal, so I guess going forward, its not going to be so bad. What really sucks is there are a lot of great apps that don't work out of service, like Google Sky Map.

Completely agree. In the next couple of years, carriers are really gonna have to kick it up a notch in fast network coverage, otherwise they're just going to hold back development.
On that note, poor, poor T-Mobile users. They're cross country coverage suckssss
Any way to change what program it uses?
Hello All,
I've d/l the app and while I agree its a step up form previous voice search options, I'm not liking the fact that "listen to" doesn't seem to point to any other program besides Pandora (Pandora's sound quality can't compete with my collection on the SD card of the phone).. has anyone figured out a way to change what program Google voice uses to play music when you select "listen to:"?
Thanks

I am trying out Navigon, which I also used on my WM phones. it costs but it has the advantage of working off line, and its mapset is very very good with speed limits etc.
There are some issues with it, like ease of navigating from a contact, and that it doesn't have al the street names on the 3d nav screen
