I have tried to look for some threads regarding noise cancellation but the only ones i found were recommendations and questions about it.
I am sorry but I feel the urge to open this thread and at the same time surprised by the fact this thread has not been created before.
I constantly get people claiming they can hear background noises almost at the same level as they can hear my voice. It seems like every time I walk down the street, any background noises (bus, cars, people shouting, music, etc) are being passed onto the other person's line. It also holds for when I am at home with friends and someone calls me, the person on the other line claims he can hear practically every word my friends are talking about as if he is on speaker phone.
Also, connecting my Nexus S to my bluetooth speaker in my car is almost not possible as people claim they hear me as if i'm in a 'space shuttle'. I can confirm that its not the bluetooth speaker as I used to have a Blackberry and never had any issues.
Anyone experiences it as well? knows about someone developing a solution for it? or is it just me hallucinating here
This is a widely known problem and unfortunately there seems to be no fix in sight. Samsung does not use a secondary noise cancelling microphone like in the Nexus 1 and their software noise cancellation is simply garbage. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the brilliant devs can figure out a way to improve the noise cancellation with some kernel magic.

"their software" .... you mean Google's software? Samsung doesn't touch the firmware whatsoever. They just provide the hardware in coalition with Google.
Simple solution (albeit it costs money). Get a noise cancelling bluetooth device. I have a blueant t1 and I never get background noise complaints. People don't even realize I'm riding on the highway. I wouldn't put too much hope it the devs doing a whole lot with noise cancellation because there's only so much software can do, since the phone lacks the hardware for true noise cancellation.
This has been posted a few times when the phone first released. There's no fix unfortunately, and a deal breaker for some. In noisy places the call quality seems to suffer from the software noise cancel function.
What noise cancellation? Yea, its quite a change from the Nexus One. People hear EVERYTHING that goes on in the background.
You can do a lot of noise cancellation with software only. There are numerous examples of excellent software solutions for noise cancellations.

Not for the Nexus S, but other companies have had successful software noise cancellation - for example Motorola CrystalTalk. As for noise on the Nexus S, I've asked friends and my wife when calling from stores, parking lots, in the car with tunes playing, etc., and they all say background noise is virtually non-existant. And I sound just fine as well. I've noticed that people can hear the music in the car when I'm not talking, but as soon as I start to talk the music is silenced. Calls to my own voicemail line confirms this.
Perhaps it has something to do with firmware versions? I have stock 2.3.3 pre-installed, no root.
it may be possible to noisegate out sounds below a certain level which depends on the mean amplitude level of a range of frequencies common to the voice. in otherwords, calculating the average amplitude the voice is, and removing anything significantly below that amplitude.
however without a second out-of-phase microphone, results wouldn't be all that great and would be processor intensive.
interesting project i may look at some time in the future.

I'm not sure weather CrystalTalk stands for a specific feature on Motorola's ROMs but if its a software, on Android, couldn't it be ported to other ROMs?
btw, I'm running NScollab 1.0.17 but always experienced such issues, even when I was on stock 2.3.3 pre-root.
I was not looking for Nexus S. Simply trying to prove a point that software noise cancellation is doable and working great. BTW, the developers of such software can easily port it to different platforms since it does not rely on specific hardware.

Hi!
I have i9100 phone and it is amazing, but i have a problem with earphone output.
I try it with original earphone and Sennheiser too, when it pluged, no music just surf in menu i can hear quiet noise. The noise is louder when i tap an icon and after that it fade.
In my opinion the music quality is not so good.
Have anybody the same noise?
Yep, I've got the same quiet noise on mine aswell. Also had it on my previous 4 Galaxy SII's. You need good ears to catch it, and it needs to be pretty much silent in the room youre in to be able to hear it.
Just got to live with it unfortunately.

same here - think this has to do with weak em shielding...
maybee supercurio can do something about that, but if it's really related to poor
shielding i fear this would not be possible!
Oh, that is not a good thing.
I agree, but it's by no means limited to the SGS2. Nearly every computer I've used (including Macs) have some sort of interference when doing CPU intensive work.
There's a long thread discussing this. A couple of us with high-end headsets got different results. I have Shure 530s and hear no side noise from the phone while idling or listening to music. Someone with the exact same headset does. No one knows why.

Has anyone who has installed the 3.2 OTA update been able to ascertain improvement with microphone input? Very interested for voice input purposes, which as of now is not functioning on my A500.
I would love to know the answer to that as well.
I'm running 3.1, which is known to have mic issues, and I'm barely audible to the person on the other side of video chat. Running the voice recording app confirms mic input is extremely low.
Hopefully 3.2 fixes this. If not, I'll have to dump this tablet on eBay.
Its a hardware problem, the software wont do anything.
You can try to mod it yourself like I did
if is a hardware issue, why connecting an external mic doesn't improve the recording level ?
I wasn't aware you could connect an external mic. Isn't the headset port for output only?

Where is the post describing your mod?
The 3.2 update doesn't change a thing about the mic. Boosting the input level 20db in software also increases the level of the considerable system noise. Only a hardware mod would fix it.
Aside from the minnor 4 ounces weight disadvantage over the lightest tabs out there, the mic is the one major problem with this tab. It seems designed for the near proximity audio source of a mobile phone.
Oh...
In that case, would anyone like to buy an Acer Iconia A500 Tablet? Used but in MINT conditon!

The mic response on mine is substantially worse than that on my OG Droid. On the Droid 1, mic and voice input is surprisingly excellent. At the same distance, the A500 is unusable for voice input. Except for that, it's a fine machine, but this aspect has me on the fence about whether to return it or not. So I am looking for any approach to fix it: HW mod, upgrade, bluetooth input, wired mic input. Nothing so far is satisfactory, or even nearly as good as the Droid from 2 years ago.
Are you really selling?
How much and how? Lol
3.2 makes no improvement but I am not sure that it is just a hardware fault. Recording level is better in the camcorder app than in the voice recorder one.
I had a video call to an Ipad the other day, their voice was crystal clear but they complained that mine was very hard to hear. I suspect that when Skype becomes available for Tegra tabs there will be a lot of people complaining about their A500!
I am wondering if anyone has found a mic to use that gives good volume for talk. One of the things I want to use this to do is video chat with my father, it's kind of a let down that this doesn't seem like an easy fix.
The funny thing is that there are reports of people using headphone/headsets from their cell phones (with three strips instead of two strips in normal stereo headphones) as a workaround. It does not work for me and can make the microphone input even worse on voice recorder. I cannot confirm if the device has the hardware for the 3.5mm jack to have 2 output and 1 input.
Others have also said it is a software issue that crept up. It was non-existent in 3.0.1 and appeared in 3.1. Yet, another responded that they downgraded from 3.1 to 3.0.1 and the issue was still there.
I have read on other forums that the Android update to 3.1 had caused the mic to be useless on other brand tablets as well, which lends to something not specific to our A500 hardware.
Now, in this thread more people are convinced it is a hardware issue.
I'm lost as to what to think, and how some people in this forum are satisfied with their Mic performance. (That or they never use video chat)
My experience:
Voice input seems to work perfectly for me (Searching accurately for addresses and stuff on Google) but the microphone in voice recorder barely picks up a recognizable sound, which also translates into chatting with the Gtalk application.
I cannot confirm that 3.0.1 did not have the mic problem, as I updated to 3.1 immediately after getting the tablet.
I would think if the mic input barely registers a sound, how can the voice input search work so well for me from the same speaking distance? If it were a hardware problem, then the voice search would fail to register the specific sounds of my voice to get detailed information on addresses or items i am searching for. Right? Maybe others can confirm that the voice input for google'ing pics up spoken voice loud, clear, and accurately (maybe depending on accent or not).
Based on this, I am hard pressed to believe this is a hardware problem (not that the microphone is A+ quality either, but it should be decent enough). Hardware is the constant, software/driver is what can change the functionality. I dont know if the ROM cookers or Kernel developers can find us a solution, should this be software.

You are correct. Hardware is not an issue, because the mic works well enough in other applications. Either the app us at fault or some plug in.
I can confirm voice input works well but any voice communication like GV is garbage. if I speak directly perpendicular to the mike about 10 inches away it's usable but not great for google voice.
Hmm, thought provoking posts.
One poster was remarking that the video recordings were working OK, but the GV ones were not good. My understanding is that there are mics, one on the front side, top center of screen, and one back side, under the back panel. It's tempting to think that the video recording was OK because it was picked up mostly by the camera-side mic, and GV wasn't because it was picked up by the screen-side mic.
I suspect that the two mics have some noise-cancelling function so it'd be partly the differential signal that would matter, sometimes.
So it would be interesting to try voice input, like GV, on the FF camera side (the wrong side) of the tab, to see if it's better. It'd also be interesting to see whether disconnecting one mic would unconfuse some software confused by the differential signal. So far, I haven't had my case apart, so I'm less inclined to try that. I still don't have my 3.2 update, but sounds like they didn't work on it.
I saw a brief note in the bluetooth section of the user guide that the BT mic portion of the spec wasn't implemented yet, so implementing that is another potential workaround.
I thought for a while that the inline mics integrated into some wired earbuds with those 4 contact plugs might also be a workaround, but when I tried one, it didn't seem much better than speaking into the mic, so I suspect that maybe it isn't even working, either.
I got mine at Costco, so it can still be returned. But it also occurred to me that Costco ought to be motivated not to have these returned. A Costco-backed straight answer from Acer, with a planned fix, would probably prevent many returns, especially, as one poster pointed out, Skype doesn't work when it's supposed to. Makes me think a strategic call to Costco buyer might uncover something.

Sorry freak. Provantage was kind enough to accept my request to return it as a defective device. I'll be picking up the Samsung Tab 10.1 from them. Video chat and Google+ hangouts were a big part of me justifying this purchase.
To those on the fence about returning it:
Try using the Samsung. While I loved all the features of the Acer, the Tab 10.1 is much more satisfying in actual use. I think the $100 premium over the Iconia is well justified once you've used both for more than 10 minutes.

Have you used it before? I'm weary to buy something that will not work.
I am finding more people who say that after updating to 3.2 their mic quality dropped considerably.
I have been using Skype and Gtalk as well as attempting to record using the Recorder app ... and all of them record a very poor quality sound in Android 3.2.
In Skype I attempted the test call and was able to hear my recording played back. It was barely loud enough and there were dropouts and pops/clicks etc.
I spoke to an Acer rep about a week ago and he said that the mic issues were addressed in update 3.2 ... which proves that this is most likely a software issue to some degree.
Very frustrating!
I recently installed Tape-aTalk and it records very clearly with the device about half an arms length away from my mouth ... again this points to there being a software issue with some apps ....
I thought my GNEX had crappy volume output, but this thing is even worse. I love the phone, but I listen to podcasts and audiobooks all day and through my BT and headphones they are really difficult to hear if anything else is going on around me. In my car I used to have the stereo set to 18/40 (with GNEX) to be able to hear the spoken word, now with the 4 I'm cranking it up to 35 which introduces some hiss and distortion. Any ideas how to boost the volume? I've looked into a few apps but none seem to work with JB. Any suggestions would be awesome. And just to note I know it isn't just me. At my brothers house parties music is supplies via a 3.5 plugged into speakers. Everyone's ipods/iphones sound so much louder than my phone, which bums me out.
Agree fully. I use Sony XB500 headphones and coming from my Xperia Arc S + Power amp to e Nexus 4 and power amp, the loudest volume setting is pathetic. It's so frustrating. Is there any way we can get a flashable mod to address this issue? Anybody else experiencing the same issue?
The AUX out is an issue and has been posted and discussed a lot on XDA and Google's pages. It's a problem with the Nexus 4 not just individuals phones. Whether it's hardware or software I don't think I've seen it determined yet.
Bluetooth and headphones shouldn't be that big of a problem. I agree it's a bit quieter than my Gnex but these are still very much usable.

Its usable yes, but for me it's simply not loud enough, even when tweaking around with Poweramp's settings. There are probably a handful of apps on the Play Store which will attempt to ifx it but surely changing the DB (decibel) parameters in the software is something simple to do? That's my train of thought. Just disappointed is all Music is vital for me when working because it blocks the world out for me but I can hear little distractions now.
Aside from flashing a Custom ROM, any work around for this Samsung default settings. It’s been a recurring issue since early days Note and Galaxy series and it’s still unresolved in our Note 3.
Alternatives:
-SoundAbout apps from Playstore is one alternative, but I’m reading some reviews that it’s creating some problems with calls and music player settings, though I haven’t tried it yet.
- Tasker apps, though it’s a paid apps. You can create a profile and to turn the notifications to mute when playing music or videos.
-Manually setting up your notifications to MUTE before plugging in your headset.
Any other ways or apps others is using to shut this annoying thing, pls share and help the community.
It's not an issue, it's a feature. How will you know you're getting a call when you're in gym or taking rest hearing to music with phones not in hand! It's designed that way...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
And it's also highly inconvenient when you're in a silent coupé on a train.
Which I am, 7 hours a day.
Or if you're listening to music in an exam (it's allowed), or when you're sharing a room, or everyone else is trying to work in silence...
If I have earphones plugged in, I bloody well have earphones in my ear. I can HEAR through them. This isn't Apple! At least give me a bloody choice!
Major blunder feature.

Sorry to necro, but has anyone found a solution to this problem? I have a very difficult time believing that this was an intentional 'feature'; the Note is marketed for enterprise use, and many if not most businesses frown upon ringtones warbling through the workplace. If it was in fact intended, the proponent of this particular quirk needs to be fired and placed out front for public shaming. Holy balls this is annoying.

I can't expres how deeply annoyed I'm with this feature aka but, I mean I do lower down the volume to 0 - Mute before putting headphones on, but it seems anytime I lower down to a lower volume, it doesn't save this, even though there is no phone restart, Samsung has proven to be absolutely unreliable, this **** doesn't happen on a Nexus, so it doesn't seem to be an android problem, what is this thing.....I mean iphone had the reliability with the ****ty restrictions and now Samsung with this ****, I think consumers need something which is worth the amount of money they pay, these companies are becoming philthy rich by selling smartphones but in reality they don't nearly deserve, a patch to iphone makes you lose all your data, they should be sued honestly, this is just disgusting and then these 2 companies are fighting with each other on who will make more money, hey stop, first of all both of you need to pay back the consumers whose money has been paying for your heavens..........

Glad it worked..... Sorry, should have mentioned that I was using the pro version. The real reason why I use Soundabout is that I connect my phone to car via Bluetooth and I also physically plug in my phone (via the 3.5mm headphone) to the Aux input of my car (I am just not a fan of Bluetooth audio quality). Soundabout was the only program at the time that would still be able to answer calls via Bluetooth while using the headphone jack as a physical audio out (this was my S2 days as).
the single speaker has a very low volume level. can anyone suggest a solution? (i read the other thread).
phone is difficult to hear in noisy environments. forget playing music on the speaker. it's just a very whimpy monaural speaker.
i have tried 4 apps to boost volume, and only SpeakerBoost made much difference, but the app warns not to exceed a certain volume which is the point you start to gain some volume.
can i actually do physical improvements to the phone, like converting it to stereo w/2 speakers? where could the parts be bought? i'm in USA.
i am not rooted. would there be a solid solution if i rooted? or did 1 + just skimp on the speaker?
the equalizer that was included w/the 1+2 initially is long gone, but it really was not helpful for any significant volume boost.
I am disappointed in the 1+2 (and the retail price has plummeted like a rock), and their poor customer service.
unfortunately, hardware mods is a far fetched idea as there is already very less space, and fitting a whole speaker is, almost impossible. also the power and audio routing is not feasible.
your best bet, IMO is to look into software mods, specially rooted ones. look up the forums, you might find some. check user opinions and you may find one useful enough.
this is what i use. .works quite well:

Out of the blue 1+ contacted me about a reception issue...
that was not resolved months ago. i would really appreciate any feedback on the following:
I took the opportunity in my response to 1+ to mention the speaker issue. anyway, after owning the 1+2 for months, i believe that the speaker and reception problems are design flaws; that 1+ simply skimped on some portions of the phone and hyped it as a flagship killer.
can anyone offer any input on a way to get significantly more volume out of the phone speaker without damaging it?
a top end tech at att wireless explained to me that someone in my building who has a cheap flip phone likely has better reception than my 1+2. this was the highest i could go up the att tech ladder. Further, i see this as a design flaw, because other immediate neighbors using the same carrier do not have the significant reception issues i experience.
anyway, i sent the phone on about an 8000 mile RT repair trip to some 3rd party repair shop that handles 1+ repairs for 1+. absolutely nothing was done about the reception issue.
Now, a 1+ representative wants me to again send the phone back to repair. they just ignore that i say these issues are design flaws.
when i heard a neighbor using their old samsung phone (speakers) like a stereo, i realized the 1+2 speaker is much worse than i realized.
i asked 1+2 for a refund or an upgrade; they turned me down.
