[Q] Kernel not updating ??? - Epic 4G General

I have searched the forum extensively looking for an answer to this, but haven't been able to find one.
When I flash a ROM, everything works perfectly. However, when I flash a kernel, it does not update the kernel in the 'about phone' section. I have tried it with numerous kernels on bonsai, midnight, and ACS. I also tried it with the Phoenix kernel on CM7, still no luck.
I odin'ed my phone back to stock and noticed that the kernel was slightly different than the current 2.6.32.9 one. I updated to EC05 and it returned my kernel to the aforementioned. Tried flashing a custom kernel, and still nothing.
Has anyone had this issue or have any ideas as to what I can do to fix it? My phone used to show the updated kernel, I believe, as I remember it listing the bonsai kernel when I flashed my first ROM (midnight 4.0).
Thanks in advance. This site has been a godsend for my phone, my fiancee's, my brother's, etc.

Not all kernels are coded to reflect the change in phone info.

Don't the rooting tools actually mod the kernel somehow? But they never appear functionally changed after the fact to me.

The build number is what changes with the different kernels

I thought the build number changed with the ROM. Thanks for the clarification.

AOSP Questions

Bear with me guys......haven't posted much on here, more of a lurker.
I have been following the AOSP Rom for the Fascinate for the last two weeks and now with the MMS working I would love to give it a shot. I have a couple of questions before I get started.
I am currently running ComRom 2.1 with the PBJ-50 Kernel. No themes or anything like that.
1. Is it safe to just do a data wipe and factory reset then just install the Rom over top of what I have?
2. Is there a Kernel and a Modem with the ROM?
3. Anything special I need to know if I decide to go back to another Rom (from what I have read just ODIN back to stock and Rom away)?
Sorry if these have been answered already.....I searched and did not find my answers. Thank you for your time.

1. I couldn't answer this with certainty as I haven't flashed it myself and haven't yet dug through the CM7 thread in development to put together correct steps
2. yes there is, but you can flash a custom kernel like OTB or the gingerbread leaks' (ec09) modem as I've seen these work though not for everyone
3. as far as I know all you need to do to go back is just odin back to eclair/froyo with the 2.2 atlas pit file and proceed from there
don't have any experience with CM7 other than what I've read so someone who's done it could probably shed more light on this

I just flashed cm7 today...
1. Data wipe, cache and factory reset should be enough. You need to download and install the 7/04 build, let it boot up and reboot back into recovery and then install the 7/13 build and then the gapps. There is also a modified cwm that you can flash to your phone that's been edited for cm7 not everyone uses it but I did and it works perfectly.
2. There is a kernel included but alot of people have better audio quality with one of the otb kernels.
There isn't a modem. But it seems like most of the newer modems are fine so your current one with comrom is probably good.
3. To do back to stock youll have to use a full odin package. But you probably won't want to anyway.

Thank you for the answers. Now I am more comfortable. Thanks.
Not sure how important it is, but I would wipe cache and dalvik as well. I used ED04 modem for a while, and switched to EC09 modem after everyone seemed to recommend it for the MTD roms. TBH, I havent noticed much difference between the 2 radios, they both worked well for me. As far as flashing back to a TW rom, check the sticky in the dev section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124391
I am already running the EC09 modem. Have been for about a week or so. I watched as others have had good luck with it so I made the jump. I probably will stick with the EC09 as it seems to work fine with AOSP MIUI Rom that I want to try. I tried the EC09 on my wife's fascinate and it ran like crap.....kind of funny how two different build dates run to differently.

Deck rom

Dose any one know where to get the stock kernel for deck rom. I am currently on tiamatone but its too glitchy and szen kernel has, long wake response. I yhink because i update to 1.3b
You can simply re-flash the rom over the current rom, no need to wipe.
Thanks but i done it twice today... I been reading that the original kernel that came in rom works the best i don't have the file nor made a backup
Wont i lose my data like that?
Pretty sure it's in kernel manager lite. Its just the cyanogen mod kernel.

Nexus S wont turn on after charging.

I'm using a 9020A model purchased on Ebay for 2 weeks now.
twice already within a few days the phone will not turn on in the morning after charging it all night (in stand-by).
It will not turn on even into boot-loader.
if I take out the battery it turns on like nothing happened.
Any idea what the problem is ?

Thats what you called "SOD" screen of death. Just pull your batery when it happen. Also it might be kernel related try changing kernel

I'm running CM7 since day one with whatever kernel it came with.
What other kernel might work with CM7 ?
There are still a couple though i don't think any are in development any more. Since it seems to have only happened once so no need to try out different kernels. I wouldn't worry about it at all unless it becomes a regular occurrence.
This seems to have happened to many others with the stable CM7 rom version.
In another post someone who had the issue reported that switching to Netarchy's kernel addressed the problem for him.
This happened already twice today so looks like I need to find a solution.
How difficult it is to replace just the kernel?
Get ahold of a GB compatible kernel, wipe dalvik cache and flash the kernel .zip file. Do a NANDROID backup beforehand (CWM -> backup) if you don't have a recent one already.
In another post someone suggested the following Kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936219
There are CFS & BFS builds. which one should I use? what is the difference ?
Also the kernels are labeled as "2.3.4+ based roms (Nexus-S AND Sprint Nexus-S 4G Phones)", However the CM7 rom is based on 2.3.7. would that work ?

CFS is a fairer CPU allocation scheduler, and generally better for multitasking as well as overall performance. BFS is, in theory, better at doing only the "task at hand", but so far hasn't proven any better than CFS, and is additionally less stable most of the time. tl;dr, get CFS.
Kernel should work fine on 2.3.7, don't stress about it. In the event that something goes wrong, just make sure you have a backup anyway.
netarchy-nexus 1.4.1 CFS Kernel is labeled "experimental" since october 2011. Is it OK to use it anyway ? how exactly is a kernel flashed ? via recovery ?

Yup, it's OK to use it anyway. Also kernel is flashed via recovery.

No need. Simply flash the kernel, via fastboot
flashed the kernel via recovery. I'll report back if the SOD problem is resolved.
5 days later and not even a single "SOD" freeze. looks like changing the stock kernel
did the trick.
3 weeks after flashing the Kernel and the SOD problem is back. 3 times in last 2 days.
Anything I can tweak to avoid these freezes ?

[Q] putting a custom ROM/kernel on i9505g GE MFD

I have a brand new GE Android 4.2.2 running MFD that I'd like to be able to flash Android 4.3 and/or the Faux Kernel on to enhance functionality. I've been scouring the xda forums for a couple of days and can't find any posts with anyone attempting this. I had no problem rooting the phone and installing CWM recovery but for the life of me I can't get a custom rom or kernel on it. I have tried i9505 MF8 roms and various kernels including Faux. I've tried dirty flashing and clean flashing. I can't the phone to boot after installing any of these and always have to revert back to my stock backup. (I believe it because I'm on MFD).
Anyone else trying this, something similar, or have any ideas?
Any advice would be greatly Appreciated.

It doesn't work yet. We have no custom ROMs or custom recovery for our phone (9505G) as of yet. The 4.3 leak has a lot of issues for most of us. If you've flashed and gotten stuck not being able to load - I recommend following my directions here to fix - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2360346
4.3 on GE
Thanks malybru!
I was able to flash 4.3 on my i9505 GE this evening.
It's a little buggy. Navigation is gone and the GPS doesn't seem to function correctly.
The rom does say experimental so I was expecting some degree of bugs.
Frankly I'm just happy I was finally able to flash something on my phone.
Are there any other roms available for the i9505 GE?
I haven't been able to find any, but of course I was unable to find the 4.3.
Thanks again for your help
No Roms

The only thing I wasn't able to load were the MF8 roms such as Omega. I was never in a soft brick state. It's disappointing to know there are no roms out yet but not surprising. I was wondering how the community would support the GE phones. I wasn't sure if there'd be hoards of developers using the phones or none at all.
XDA should have a GE category in the i9505 section.
Thanks for the advice.

WiFi with ktoonz kernel

Hey guys.
I flashed the ktoonz kernel about a week ago and it works just fine except one thing: after a reboot my phone has forgotten my wifi password and i have to connect it again.
every time i restart the phone it's the same. it worked on stock kernel.
does anyone know this problem? it's quite annoying..
--edit--
i forgot to mention that i'm on stock samsung rom android 4.3 with touchwiz
and it's the international s4 (i9505).

Question; after installed I try to flash a custom kernel (AOSP/TW/GE - 4.2/4.3 KT-SGS4 - MFD - KTweaker) and everything started to work wrong (no wifi, net fc,and many others)please tel my what kernel it's perfect for your rom and also if it's realy ned to flash a custom kernel ?
10X
A custom kernel is not required for these ROMs as they include the stock Samsung TouchWiz kernel which I'd say is probably the best kernel for the stock ROMs.
Isn't there a way to get WiFi working without flashing a new rom? I don't want to wipe the phone actually and the kernel is pretty nice I think.
It's pretty konservative with the battery and gives me extra power when I need it.
Isn't there a WiFi-fix or something like that?

Got the same issue with 4.4.2 and newest kernel version...
Tried changing build.prop line but with no success.
Is there any kind of help or a adequate wifi fix for kitkat?
Solved: wiped cache and dalvik and fixed permissions couple of times. Now it works

I'm using GT-I9505 "international" with Paranoid Android 4.45 and successfully installed Ktoonsez kernel (3.4.94) with flashify app using Philztouch cwm recovery.
No problems at all, everything works, not tweaking by KTweaker, just raised 2.2GHz from PA's processor settings, ondemand as processor governor and Noop on i/o scheduler.
Tried few KTweaker profiles first but didn't find any good what understands to drop processor on deep sleep mode, almost all keeps it running all the time, PA's own handling with freshly installed KT-SGS4 kernel did best job for me.
Testing with profiles was frustrating thing, there wasn't way back to same situation what I got on fresh install.. few PA flashes later stand on "default".
Props to KToonsez (kernel), Christian Göllner (Flashify) and Paranoid Android.
