[Q] Desire S Kernel source code? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I came across the Desire S kernel source code earlier today, and I must ask, how is it of no help to myTouch 4G Gingerbread Sense ROMs? I was pretty sure they have near identical hardware [minus the trackball that's not on the DS], but other than that, howcome it's of no use to us?

Good question. I asked that in the RoyalMint thread, but the answer wasn't clear. I guess even though we don't understand why, the point is the source isn't helpful. Maybe someone else can expain.

I was working on hacking the kernel since its release a couple weeks ago to make it glacier compatible but it's been slow coming because I only have 1 phone (my only life line to the outside world) and adapting a kernel I need the phone fully dedicated to testing which I can't afford to do with my only phone... So it's been very slow.

[ROM LEAKED] Can we get the mytouch 4g build for HD2?

http://pocketnow.com/android/t-mobile-mytouch-4g-aka-htc-glacier-shipped-rom-leaked

My question is can we get a build for the hd2? Or are there still more things needed?
Could someone please explain to me why every time any phone with Android is released, that there are drones of people demanding developers who've put hours and hours on end of their own personal time into programming fixing and tweaking the current HD2 Android builds for no personal gain whatsoever, to devote more time and energy porting over a build that has almost no change in OS whatsoever?
I'd understand if a new phone came out with Android 2.3 or something, but all the phones being released lately aren't that much different from each other....
In the OP's defense he didn't demand anything he simply asked if it was possible and what it would take.. but your right about all the new phones OS being pretty similar.. that being said there is almost always something new in the OS when tmo drops a new android phone.. new mytouch is supposed to have a uma similar feature.. I guess we will see.

Okay then, in that case, I'd be interested in a port.
A large majority of people both in Europe and United States use T-Mobile.
What are the benefits?
TMOBILE DID A GREAT JOB WITH THE MYTOUCH SLIDE UI "ESPRESSO" BUT ITS RUNNING ANDROID 2.1. AND THE FUNNY THING IS THAT, THE UI ON THE MYTOUCH SLIDE HAD SKINS, LANDSCAPE SENSE, AND MULTITASKING IN THE NOTIFICATIONS WAY BEFORE THE "DESIRE HD" AND "DESIRE Z".
ALOT OF GOODIES IN THE PREVIOUS MYTOUCH (CAN APPLY LOCK WALLPAPER DIFFERENT FROM HOME WALLPAPER, THEMES, LANDSCAPE SENSE, MY FAVES GALLERY, MODE SWITCH BASE ON TIME OR LOCATION, GENIUS APP, APP PACK AND MORE). SO I AM VERY INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THIS 2.2 VERSION OF THE MYTOUCH ROM PACKS

"similar" but not identical. For example, the processor (QSD8250 vs MSM8255) is different... Chipset might be different. radio manufacturer might be different, camera drivers mightbe different, etc etc etc.
But hey, they managed to plug in Desire Z and HD ROMs... Who knows!
If you can really use it

Whoever initiates this type of request should actually donate some money first, recommend others to do the same and then get someone interested to make a build if they want it... that way, build maker makes some $$$ and everyone is happy... even grannies don't give it for free...

Gingerbread was released for Nexus One today...anyone know how long till it hits G2 owners? Being a vanilla phone shouldnt we be next?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Since G2 is an official T-Mo phone, all depends on T-Mo's mood I guess...
It'll be out as a custom ROM sooner than as an official update, I would expect.
Def give it a couple of days let the devs go through the sdk.. Its gonna be a little work moving it over to the g2 because of the physical keyboard and also all the new additions like voip, gyroscope, nfc and all that they gotta make it all work so give it a couple days.. Maybe even something quick tonight..

Yeah. Although honestly, I'm kinda loving the Desire Z ROM - I don't know if I can go back to the stock camera app, frankly. From the SDK screenshots on the Google blog, it doesn't look like there's any real changes there, either.
Actually, we could be waiting a while. According to cyanogen as well as a lott of other devs, the g2 isn't as vanilla as first thought. There's a lot of HTC crap over it and someof the stuff is designed to look like stock while being something else entirely. The point is, it could take a while for us to get it......at least officially....

The SDK isn't the source code though, just the stuff to help you develop Android apps.
Anyone know when the source code usually gets released ? Will it be the day the Nexus S ships ? Or before/after ?
They said it would be coming soon but they said the same for the announcement of 2.3 and that wait felt like forever.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
As a general rule newer versions of android are merged into aosp within a few weeks to a month after the sdk. At least that's what we've historically seen.
It is possible and fairly easy to create a port from the sdk however it tends to be buggy at best.
Once we get a link from an ota from the nexus one we should be able to put together a proper port.
If you're waiting for Cyanogenmod you'll be waiting til 2.3 hita aosp as steve and company build directly from the source.

Source? Source for what? Whether the G2 is stock android? That isn't speculation, at this point its a fact that it isn't "clean" android. If you want to be sure of that, just read cyanogens posts in his thread or the nightly discussions. Gingerbread will need to be ported to this phone just like with any phone running a custom ui albeit faster though because HTC didn't go as far as a whole custom ui. Regardless, I would be willing to bet that gingerbread source is released and ported to cyanogenmod before the G2 gets an OTA.

Even if the stock G2 rom isn't quite as pure as it looks, should that even matter? Isn't the point of something like CM to get AOSP to run on the phone? I was under the impression that CM included very few hacks that are device specific.

No, it doesn't matter if your phone is rooted and running a custom rom. I was reffering to the delay for an official gingerbread OTA. That's why I said it would be ported to CM before its officially ported to the G2.

Gingerbread is not out for the Nexus One yet. Also once the source for it is released then the rom makers can start working on it

[Q] HTC Wildfire S

I have just seen some wildfire s movies and the point is:
it's runneing gingerbread and it has a flip clock.
My question is: If the htc wildfire s has nearly the same things as the normal wildfire.
Can we (if the wildfire s is released) port gingerbread from the s version to ours.
Or will there be an update with the new sense and gingerbread.
Please could someone that know something about it say something to me, please.
And my second question is: Can someone already put the new sense in a rom.
I hope someone really know something about it.

It is not nearly the same. It is totally different. And, to get the new Sense, the code has to be released by HTC. Till that, there wont be a GB Sense Enabled ROM for the Wildfire.
Also, I am pretty sure with the release of the S, HTC will not conveniently forget the original Wildfire and probably not release any updates for it. Its basically an EOL Product now. Its the way the industry works.
After some monthes on the market every mobile phone is EOL. You are right!

If you really want gingerbread on wildfire, you can try Cyanogen 7. There is no htc sense with cyanogen though.

Simply because HTC apps require a framework that AOSP ROMS do not have as it is power consuming and is slow.

As djdevine2 stated above, porting Sense would be very hard or even impossible. Sense is like a bug that crawls really deep inside the Android OS. Eliminating is it hard, I imagine introducing it would be also very, very hard.
And not to mention the possible Legal issues that could appear
maybe there is hope
It has also been rumored that the HTC Wildfire will receive the recently released 2.3 Gingerbread update.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Wildfire
This is just a rumor, but there is still hope.
Doesn't look so. If you look at the citation on that particular line, and, read that thread in another forum, there is nothing there to state that HTC has said anything about 2.3 on Wildfire. It is simply a speculative thread, and, points to CM7 for 2.3 on Wildfire.
"You can have your doubts about when your phone maker will finally get around to delivering an Android 2.3 update (March if you're with HTC, June if Samsung, 2017 if you're unfortunate enough to own a Sony Ericsson), but the smartphone dev community doesn't work that slowly. The guys who build custom ROMs just for the sheer pride of it have already begun work on delivering Gingerbread to owners of HTC's EVO 4G, Droid Eris, and Wildfire."

ROM-patch - 2 way true call recording

Hi all devs..
The Desire has now been blessed with a kernel patch that actually allows true 2-way call recording directly from the line, and not just recordings from the Mic..
It has also been developed for the HTC HD2 Android nand builds.
I'm not a developer so I don't really know what I am talking about, but it seems that ones this baby was cracked, it easily ports to different builds and hardware..
Sooo wouldn't it be pure awesomeness if the DHD developers could do some magic with this also??
It seems to be a patch for kernels, but I guess it needs some sort of fundamental change if it should work on DHD..
If you are a developer or a Rom/kernel cooker, please take a look at it! Specially you LeeDroid;-)
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I think lots of good things like this will come once htc releases their source for the gingerbread kernel... have patience
if only we had a link to the desire patch...
here you go
As far as I could read it is radio-dependent.
We must wait for a radio that can allow us to do so.
(it controls the chips on the board)
As far as I can see, it's a few rpcs and ioctls.
The radio version shouldn't be a problem. As for the DHD, we'd need to port the code to qdsp5v2, since the original patch is intended for qdspv6
i really hate asking dumb questions like this, so sorry in advance
but could someone please paste a link on how to apply update.zip
renaming it to update.zip and running it is saying updating kernel in clockwork.
then no boot, what do i do after i installed the apk
Im on leedroid 2.2.2 kernel 2.2.9

[Q] 5Ghz wifi problem...

I currently use stock rooted MT4G, but have started to enjoy the Virtuous Unity Glacier ROM that gives us Sensation's abilities. I have noticed that normally MT4G finds 5ghz wifi w/ no prob, but w/ Virtuous Unity it's gone. I want to find out if someone has a way to restore the support in not only the GB builds, but now also the ICS builds that share the same problem. Before anyone brings up wiki on this issue of whether MT4G supports 5Ghz and starts a flame war, I have both bands running in my house and have even done wifi calling through the 5Ghz band, so don't bother quoting specs. Need further proof: URL pdf.eccn.com/pdfs/Datasheets/Broadcom/BCM4329.pdf I believe the issue has something to do with how the kernel is compiled with the bcm4329.ko module. There may be a switch or parameter not being set in the module's build files (written in c) before a build is initiated. The resulting .ko file seems different depending on which phone it's being used on. Obviously this is a senior developer/kernel jockey question and I lack the know how to do this myself, but it's an important issue considering every developer wants to put out as bug-free a build as possible.
Any ideas?

Froyo never supported this for MyTouch 4G.
The official GB kernel came with 5Ghz support. Oddly, no developer never had support in their custom kernels. If you MUST have it, you could try flashing the stock kernel (extract it from the official ROM) or learn C and have at. This has been asked about many times and no one with the skills seems to want to add it.
If someone knows otherwise please correct me.

I got the mt4g on the first day it was sold and 5 ghz wireless n did work on the froyo version and all of the stock roms (until the Android 2.3.4 Software build number 2.32.531.1 - when they partially broke it - it worked but not consistently .. see support.t-mobile.com/message/75827 ).
My take is that the kernels are using a generic driver that works for all of the similar devices that did not have the 5 ghz N. There are very few phones that have 5 ghz wireless N - so I assume that the linux kernel either isn't from the HTC mt4g source or the wifi driver for some reason has been changed out, but a dev would need to weigh in on that.
