Moire pattern on screen - Xoom General

Whoops! Anyone else experiencing this?
It's worst in person, but I think the video kinda shows how it creates a moire pattern with just light tap on the glass. I noticed it when I tried to clean/wipe the screen and seen the pattern on the right side. It only happens on the right side though.
I'm a bit dissappointed as this is my second one, and the first one don't have this even if I put pressure on the glass. I know this one happens, but only with lots of pressure on the screen, but definitely not with just a slight tap.
I'm using my wacom stylus on this one, but it's the same effect with just my fingers, just to be clear.

Yes I noticed this on my XOOM as well, when I was installing my first screen protector. It's only visible when the unit is turned off, and only on certain parts of the screen. I had long since forgotten about it, as it doesn't affect my device at all when its turned on.
Edit: Just looked at your video - looks like you are having a problem while the unit is turned on - I don't see that much distortion with casual pressure while the unit is turned on with my XOOM.

I wouldn't have mind if it's only visible when it's off, but this one is visible even when it's on (as shown on the video).

What you have is a little odd. Doesn't look right. I had a laptop that exhibited a similar pattern after it took a hit to the screen. If I would flex the screen or wipe it I would see a pattern like that. Never got any worse, but never got any better either.

Its probably a small capacitor behind the screen, if you apply too much pressure you can probably break the LCD in that spot, probably a design flaw from the screen manufacturer. You can try and return it but probably the next one will be the same.
Also Moire effect is a whole different than what you have on the video.
This is moire effect.

i had this, I returned my rooted xoom for one that didn't do that.

Yeah, if possible return it. Something is putting pressure on the screen right there and it could lead to it breaking at that spot in a situation that would not break a normal xoom. It's a manufacturing defect. The worst part is that nothing will likely be done about it and someone else will get the same unit with the defect still in it as a refurb since it's not a flaming obvious defect that keeps you from using the device.

I've had 3 different Xooms, and they all exhibited this effect to one degree or another. They were a 3G/4G unit I returned to get a wifi-only unit, and one I returned due to this problem. The one I have now also has it.
I first noticed it on the second wifi-only when I was cleaning the screen with the unit turned off, and then noticed it when I turned the unit on and pressed a little harder than usual. I checked the 3G unit, and it was the same. Others mentioned theirs having the issue on the Motorola forums, so it seems pretty consistent.
It seems to me that this is a design issue around screen support on the right side. It appears that there's a portion of the screen where the LCD can be bent that's different from the rest of the screen.

SOS - Hermes works fine just that there is NO screen!

Really need help here,
My hermes suddenly decided that visuals are no longer needed.
That means the screens stays off all the time (yes even in bootloader mode).
It works, receive calls and flashes roms but in no situation can I see anything on the screen (pitch black screen).
I've got no warranty so I took it apart and checked each cable and connector - no issues were seen. I tried changing SPL-s, RUU, Roms all worked but left my tytn with that black screen.
Did anyone see this happen or has any advice?
This sucks big time :-(
No one? Oh man, I guess it's dead then :-(
Last bump before giving up and throwing it away - please?
send it to me if your gonna throw it away : - 0
I've given up on mine as well. It has white screen though. Where do I dump this thing?
If it is out of warrenty, I would take it apart as is sounds like the hardware, check the connections to the LCD. Does the backlight still work, or if you put it in strong sunlight, can you see the LCD working?
My Hermes had a white screen also. I found that if I squeeze the bottom right hand corner whilst resetting it would sometimes work. It seems there is a chip on the switch board that needs the right ammount of pressure on it. I think it was a design flaw as the herm200 and 300 are different. If applying pressure works and you are confident enough take the hermes apart and put a couple of small pieces of plastic or paper between the front buttons and the small square chip on the switch board. This worked for me.
The service guide is available if you google. Let me know if you need more info.
As for the black screen that sounds more serious sorry not seen that one.
what are you guys willing to sell your pdas for? Mine fell in a puddle and i need one for parts. The white screen might be fixable the first couple of times but then it dies off for good, the black screen i've never heard of.
So if you want to sell for a reasonably cheap price let me know, i can buy a new keypad online for $50. So around there would be nice!

I just tested this on mine and actually got some results.
mines the opposite though, it will NOT work with any pressure. I left all the screws loose for that board under the buttons, and left the LCD assemble screws out on that end and it works, But if I press the keys it whites out again and won't come back until I repeat the dis-assemble/re-assemble
I had a similar problem but this was after someone dropped mine on the floor. The screen would just be white screen, while everything worked. If I pressed the bottom right of the phone it would sometimes come on and stay on for a little while but would eventually always go to white screen.
I did manage to use the phone but had use a program called Net Control which allowed me to control the phone over WIFI with the phone screen shown on the PC. Got the phone replaced in the end by the people who dropped it.
i got the flex cable and my phone still has the white screen problem....wtf///

*POSSIBLE* fix for Newton Rings

Okay, so lately my screen's becoming more and more out of alignment. I've basically had to use the black frame on the right hand side of the phone to click anything on the right that needed to be clicked.
Then last night my phone froze while rebooting, wouldn't show the boot animation, just the welcomehead image and froze there. Needless to say I thought something's up. Long story short I checked everything that there is to check and ended up having to hard-reset.
While flipping my phone around through all possible dimensions, i noticed the oily looking stain that is the well-known Newtons Rings problem.
I wasn't willing to be without my beloved Blackstone for a warranty repair and was about to jump on eBay to look for a replacement screen and digitizer, when I remembered something that fixed the touch screen in my old Sony Ericsson P900. So here's what I did that has so far fixed my newtons rings and returned the more soft-touch feel of the screen.
WARNING do the following at your own risk!!! I will not be held responsible for you killing your already dead, Newton Ringed screen
* First, be sure you have a screen protector on. I have a feeling that not having the protector on will damage the screen further.
* Grab your trusty $2 Bic cigarette lighter.
* Hold your phone on such an angle that the oily-looking Newtons Rings are visible. The right amount of light, from the right angle will show them up like the dog's proverbials.
* Ignite the lighter and hold it so the flame is lightly touching the area that has the problem.
--You won't see the rings disappear, more like they will start moving--
* Move the ignited lighter until you have moved, or removed, the oily looking problem areas.
EDIT 29-07-2010:
* Try not to hold the lighter too close for too long, otherwise you may end up needing a new screen protector
NOTE: I do NOT guarantee this will work for you, however, in my particular case, the rings appear to have gone, the screen is now once again soft to touch and the alignment seems MUCH better. It has now been approximately 12 hours since I did this, and so far, so good. All problems are still gone, no visible rings, and the screen is still far more responsive, almost like new.
Newton Rings
So did it fix the issue permanently?
Well, it sort of has succeeded. While my screen still has a huge patch of Newtons Rings (approximately an inch and a half long, by about three quarters of an inch across, they came back after about a month or two) the screen is still functioning, the "soft touch" I mentioned in my first post has nearly dicipated, but it still works. Every now and then the screen will act as if it's stuck down towards the bottom of the screen, but simply rubbing it with a cloth and some mild pressure (just like when I clean it) is enough to bring the screen back to working.
At the very least, it has given me time to save up for a new screen. But I won't be replacing it until such time as the next big change pops up in WM6.5 builds and I cook a new ROM. At this point I'll be completely disassmbling the whole phone for a thorough cleaning. While I'm at it I might as well replace the screen and keep the N.R one for a backup.
To put it simply, the screen is still working and I have no need to replace it as yet.
P.S I'm no longer using a screen protector, I don't care if it gets scratched up now, because it will be replaced, but not until it 100% needs it. I will however put a new screen protector on, if I have to do the lighter trick again.
Thanks Swarvey, got newton rings and helped remove the with the lighter, however i will hav to replace the screen protector.
Cool, glad to hear it wasn't just a once-off that it worked.
I never burned/melted my protector by doing it, but you might have different results with the much higher temperature you subjected yours to.
Keep us posted as to how well it works for you.
In fact I know a less dangerous way to eliminate those rings. I was exactly in the same situation with my HTC Touch HD. I just used some Scotch tapes on the screen, pull the screen to me , and with a lot of patience, everything as desapeared.
It works again !!

Satyan, can you be more specific on how to do it....i have tried duct tape method at least 10 times and it has not worked....
1. how far shud i hold the lighter
2. how do i know, if its working - will the oily patch disaapeear as the area is heated
3. Is it confirmed that oily patch is completely gone n doesn;t return within 1-2 days

[Q] A500 Shorts Out (I think)

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this. It is clearly a hardware issue, and I doubt there's much I can do since it's not under warranty AND has a hacked bootloader, but:
If it gets jostled too much, especially if a particular spot near the dock connector gets much pressure, the screen "glitches" and it becomes unresponsive. It even happened yesterday when it was on my lap at a 90 degree angle and fell over onto my stomach. It's very difficult to use it for more than a short 5-10 minute period without this happening unless I'm SUPER gentle with it.
The screen comes back visually and can continue to be "glitched" with that slight pressure to the right spots, but it never comes back to responsiveness. I have to hard reset.
I can create a video of this behavior if anyone thinks that'll help.
The whole thing is unresponsive - even with a mouse or keyboard attached, no response, so it's not like just the touch sensitivity is gone. I doubt anyone does, but if there are any ideas / good places that will repair it for a realistic fee, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

Why not just pop off the back cover and take a look around for loose connectors? Won't hurt anything.

i have no such problem here matey and i ride a bike with the a500 in a laptop bag all day.

Part of display nonresponsive to touch

I've had my Nexus 4 for a couple years I believe now, and overall it's been a nice device. I've had occasional issues now and then with software (Camera not available message, random powerdowns) but no hardware issues. A couple weeks ago, part of my display stopped responding. The LCD itself shows everything, there's no bars, no visible cracks in the screen. but the left hand side of the screen, I'd estimate about 1/5 the screen in width, no longer responded to touch. The far far left edge, along the very edge of the display, registered, and on the other side of that 1/5 worked fine. The area that was giving me issues was right about where the 'a' key on the keyboard is in portrait mode -- the only location I could press to get an 'a' registered an 's' as well.
This is all being tested with the developers Show Screen Touches and Show Pointer Information turned on.
Then, the end of this past week, it got worse. The entire left half of the display still shows fine, but almost never responds to touches -- maybe 1 in 100 times it will. Thankfully, I was able to get in one of those times and disable my screen lock. It seems to be able to register as far left as an x value ~418. This means the back button in portrait mode, for example, no longer works. To make me even more confused, it seems to register phantom presses. The device can be lying, powered on on my desk, no touching it, and the display starts showing screen touches -- the most common one I see is right about where the word Google is in portrait on the stock main screen. These will continue indefinitely.
All this to say, I suspect my digitizer has had a mechanical failure. Does that seem a reasonable conclusion to you? I like the four inch form factor of the device, and with most new smartphones getting larger and larger, I'm shying away from changing to another device. I've looked briefly at replacing the digitizer -- it seems you can purchase either the digitizer alone or with the LCD, and that when replacing just the digitizer it's easy to accidentally create problems with the existing LCD. Is that true?
Also, the part about having to use a hair dryer to pull the components apart makes me a little nervous. Screws and cables I can handle, but a hair dryer?

I would say it's most likely a hardware problem with the digitizer. The lcd/digitizer assembly is glued together so it's very difficult to separate the two without damaging the lcd.
Unless you have the tools to separate them properly, it's alot less headache to get the entire assembly already glued together.

Display Issue - Red "Smudge"

Sooo, was wondering if anyone else has come accross an issue like this. I received my LG G6 yesterday, brand new out of the box. While watching the Stranger Things title sequence on Netflix last night in a dark room with brightness turned close to max, I couldn't help but notice a red "smudge" like artifact on the screen (see picture). Strangely enough, the smudge almost goes completely away when applying pressure to the screen above it, and becomes very much more visible when applying pressure to the screen below it. Also, it only seems to be visible on a black background with the brightness ramped up above 65%, and disappears completely with any other color. So strange..
I remember back when the iPhone 4 came out, there were complaints of a yellow smudge on the display of many units. Apple mentioned that it was caused by some sort of bonding agent used during assembly of the phones that had not yet fully dried, and that it would go away after a few days. I wonder if this is also being caused by something like that, and if I should wait, or just ask for a replacement ASAP. Thoughts?
