Random Lag? - Xperia Arc General

Evening all,
just got my SE ARC sim free today, ive no sim in, and havent downloaded anything at all, yet i experience random lag between home screens, i can see any reason for it, very intermittent, tried putting as many widgets as i can on all the screens but that doesnt cause it, can have 1 or 10... does any1 else get this? im on .181
1st thoughts on the phone, nice crisp speaker but no bass
lovely screen and the autobrightness is very subtle
it was on just over half charge when i fired it up and no ive got 15% battery after 7hrs
no random lock ups or anything like that....
just the random lags doin my head in

It takes a while to build the Dalvik cache, also the Timescape widget is responsible for some lag.

ive deleted the timescape app, the lags apparent in some light games like this ninja game that runs up walls, my old zte blade ran it effortlessly but this skips/lags... seriously thinkin of returning it

It will settle.. takes the phone about 3-4 days to sort itself out, then you should see the smoooooooothness.

you sure? im on the verge of sending it back, even just for a replacement

Mine definitely got better after about 3-4 days.... your's may be faulty though as my early "lag" was very infrequent and barely noticeable.

I initially had lag problems that I incorrectly blamed on lack of ram. But I've had the phone now for a week and have not had any lag for a few days now.
As other have said it may just need a few days to bed in.

Please keep us posted. Would love to hear (or rather not hear) about any lag problem. Thanks!

512MB is now considered a lack?
I want to live in the future too!
Anyway, I've had some lag on the home screen, but, I blame it on the massive amount of widgets I have. HDMI-mirroring results in miniscule lag at first as well.

my initial lag seems to have tailored off, im now runnin .184 theres occassional lag in some heavy games, and ive narrowed the home screen lag to swiping to the screen on the immediate right of the home screen... no idea whats causing this and its very intermitant

He means off the home screen, I assume.
Timescape is a widget, if it's not on your home screen, it doesn't exist. The Arc isn't the X10.

This isn't actually true. Timescape still exists as an application, and can be run from the launcher.

You can, but, it's exactly the same as opening it from the widget. It's a completely optional app. If not opened, it doesn't run. I've never seen it on the list of running services/apps.

Replacement phone

Talked to head of Samsung mobile in Norway today. We agreed on a direct replacement phone, and if that doesn't solve the lag (which he says he has only heard about once...) I will get a complete refund. Hope this helps (not much hope though), or else I will go for the refund and a DHD.

seriously? they test with no apps - text and make calls only ?!
I guess everyone with `lag` of some sort or another is imagining it..... Not good Samsung.
Exactly. My impression too. But he claims that "every" sales person in Samsung has it and uses it with "no" problem. Just too unbelievable to me... As you say they probably only have 10 apps and use the phone for texting and calling and probably mail...
Hey to be honnest i've only had significant lag with one version (JPK was horrible to be honnest, but i didn't factory reset or wipe cache after flash)... different notions of lag, maybe i'm really lenient. exept for opening the widget menu in the homescreen, that took ages, worse for adding applications.
what do you guys refer to as lag?
My lag is from 2-30 seconds when opening apps. Sometimes unlocking the phones takes 5-10 seconds. Especially noticeable if apps are not already in RAM. It also happens that it freezes for minutes.
On a friends HTC desire similar navigational tasks are more or less INSTANT!

wow yea that's hardcore. I've never ever had such bad lag issues. I mean 2sec is ok-ish in my books, but 30sec is just too much.
It would be interesting to see a comparison of the two phones running the same apps. I knew that when i used to use a taskiller it would slow me down a lot. Some apps messed up my speed.

I'm NOT whining: Lag on jp6 Froyo is real (proof)

Check my Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fds9eccI9OA
I did a FR before flashing with Kies, and after flashing. Also did a clean install of all apps and settings and a cache wipe.
maybe 50 pics, 50 mp3s and 100 apps and 4 widgets running.
This video was taken just 15 minutes after a reboot.
Do people consider this whining?
EDIT: Spend 6 minutes looking through the video. The lags gets worse and worse.
That is the worst lag I have ever seen, I understand if you are upset, for me the lag is 1-2 second pauses now and then.
Was it as bad on 2.1?
Looks bad. Anyways try getting rid of the batt app that lets you know of the batt percentage on the notifications tray. I got rid of mine and the phone is much quicker.
Good luck i feel for you buddy.

Something is hogging the cpu.. Or a process is creating a problem. What happens after you clean the memory in the taskmanager? This isn't normal.

The icon is just the alarm clock.
Ending all apps does not solve much. The lag returns almost immediately.
Was this lag meant to be so, i mean is it intended to blame the phone? I'm sure this is not normal, and have never seen lag like this. Mostly its 1sec (i know many complain about this) but blink twice and it will load

The lag was almost like this also with jf3 and jm1.
Not many apps running simultaneously, so I don't see the problem...
Not to disparage what you're experiencing there mate but I flashed JP6 yesterday and I can honestly say so far it's been smooth sailing even without any lag-fixes, as opposed to when I was on 2.1 just prior and things were about the same as what you've got here. Did you do a TitaniumBackup restore or anything?

Hmmmm, the only thing I can think of (and this'll probably sound silly) but you might want to try without a SIM in it. I remember people with Milestones having damaged/faulty SIMs which would cause their phones to slow right down.
Also, sorry but I have to admit I got a good giggle from the fingers tapping at ~4:30 :3

It depends WHAT you are running. In your movie you say stuff like "wow, 5 apps running", but widgetlocker for instance I know slows the phone down a bit.
The number of apps means very little (I can make a computer lag by encoding a video and messing around in photoshop too). It's what you are running that matters. Maybe you should try to work out which applications are causing issues (there is a good reason why I got rid of widgetlocker though).
Anyway, this thread should be closed as a dupe. It doesn't warrant it's own thread, as you aren't a celebrity, and other people have already posted video's onto the existing threads.Your case is no more important than the others.

Wasn't running anything after fresh boot. The video is from first screen taps on this freshly booted phone.
EDIT: Removing Widget Locker does not help... Tried that.
here it's unbelievable stable(jpk+oclf+4wks+120apps), guess it was a wise choice not going jp6/m.
But why are there 5 apps active? I have several active widgets but they don't show up as a regular process(es) here.. I'm sure that my phone would lagg too while running 2 games, 2 web browsers and navigational software on the background. =/
I doubt it was acting like this from flash off right?
Do you consider that the hardware may have been damaged!? You have your warranty, get another one .

Well.. That's my point.. Your apps must be doing something that is sucking up your CPU... because I'm running Messaging, Launcherpro, Jabberoid (not listed in active apps), sipdroid (not listed in active apps), and a live wallpaper. I suspect that your apps are possibly running a few things not listed in task manager.. Also, are you running custom widgets (I'm not using any, which might be adding to the jumpiness). I also only have 50 apps.
I have noticed your app list contains MANY custom widgets..
So, I suggest working out what specifically is causing your issues. But I can honestly say I don't get lag like that on my phone..

[Q] Do you guys have any lag issues?

What do you guys think of the keyboard lab issues? Lag with opening the notification bar?

Thanks,

I have from time to time a lag in the notification bar when I try to pull the bar down. This happens most often when I get a notification while the phone is in sleep mode. Waking up the phone and then pulling down the notification bar is often after the second or third attempt possible.
I had the same lag after unlocking the phone and trying to pull down the notification bar. Annoyed me to no end and people thought I was crazy... glad to see I wasn't the only one who isn't blind lol.
Thanks guys. Do/did either of you have LauncherPro installed? Was the lag any better?
if you want smoother scrolling through the menus and whatnots, launcherpro is the way to go.
there is lag here and here but unlike the stock android with motoblur, i can live with this type of lag. it's not even that bad at all - with launcherpro.

Hmm...thanks guys. Anyone else have this issue? And does freezing MotoBlur/using LauncherPro fix this?
Yes, using another launcher does fix it.I'm using go launcher ex and while the drawer isn't as smooth as launcher pro's (i think because it's skinned), the home screens are smooth as butter, like launcher pro's. Freezing and replacing moto's stuff makes it a really good phone!

I agree on what you said, but any chance this is the fault of the phone not being able to keep up? I've seen him do the same thing on the Nexus S and not make any mistakes...maybe it's just me.

Does the lag go away with the latest update?
You dont need to freeze anything to get it running smooth. Just remove all widgets/shortcuts on blur since any launcher you install would run on top of it

since samsung does not sell the phone directly, where exactly are they claiming you can "return the phone to within 28 days"? i would think that depends on the place in which you purchased it. and i dont think its the same for every store.

So I just did the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Htp1BvOO3AM
Just have hidden messages but didn't accelerated or cut a part of the video.
And yes wakeup is like 1sec delay and can be annoying.
I'm not seeing any slow downs. At all. I had 3 HD games open (Nova, Lets golf 2, and Real Football 2011). I was playing Nova and it was getting a bit heated and I didn't know why but there was absolutely no lag so I didn't pay attention to it, figured the game is taking up quite a bit of power. I stop after about 30 min, and go into task manager to see... all 3 games were running. That was just f'in impressive... the phone taking all this without lagging even a second.
I dont have any samsung widget lags either : \ Before this I was using launcher pro on Galaxy S 1 with an axura custom rom which was relatively lag free (just saying that because I'm not comparing TW 4.0 launher with TW 3.0).
Having said that, the only slight delay I have is when I pinch in all the homescreens. Even that is just a slight stutter if anything. The live widgets I have on desktop are Gallery (cycling through abotu 100 12MP pics), weather, task manager, Email, Sticky notes, Poweramp music player, Youtube, FML, Yahoo Finance, several Pulse feeds, and calendar). These are my live widgets plus ive got a few app shortcuts scattered around. So I'm not too upset with the pinch on home screen causing a bit of stutter since suddenly all those things are being live refreshed/updated.
If you have the lag you're talking about... I'd say something is wrong with your phone.

My thoughts on the Arc and why im going to sell it (read if your thinking of buying!)

Hi all,
Now im generally not a fan of people posting 'hate' threads, but this phone has dissapointed me so much that i feel it necessary to point out why i turned to hate it and why im selling it and getting the Galaxy SII in order to help people that are thinking of buying this phone to make an advised decision.
1. It constantly lags, and almost every app force closes (and YES i have reset the phone and used both .181 and .145 versions of the firmware.
2. When the phone starts syncing accounts in the background it renders it unusable. The phone takes up to 5 minutes to load the Facebook app and longer for anything else.
3. Sony Ericsson's stupid decision to reverse the ground and mic wires so you cant use any other wired headphones with an inline control but the ones it came with. As discussed in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045973&page=1
4. The camera takes too long to open.
5. The USB socket is on the side at the top so you have to have a landscape dock which takes up more room (obviously only applies to people that use a dock with their phones).
6. The USB/Power lead that comes with it is angled up instead of down which i find just gets in the way.
7. The headphone jack is on the side (ok this is not a major issue but is annoying when getting it in and out of your pocket when you have headphones in.
8. The headphones that come with it only have a play/pause button and no volume or any way to change tracks. (i hear theres an app that can change what the button does but it really should be there to start with!)
9. I bought a sim locked version which at the moment means i cant root or install custom roms.
10. The Sony Ericsson UI is awful and downright ugly (again you can always install a different launcher, but thats money for an app that you shouldnt need in my opinion and it just covers the home screens, as soon as you enter the Settings, Dialler or Contacts your right back in the SEUI).
11. Recording in 720p is super laggy and jolts all the time making it useless.
I will go on to say though that the camera is the best phone camera i have ever used by far! Stunning photos everytime. And the same goes for the built in speaker.
UPDATE!!
Ok so i thought i should update this post in case anyone was still undecided on which device to buy. I have since sold my Arc and bought an S2 and WOW WHAT A DIFFERENCE!.
The S2 solves all the little problems i had with the Arc (the headset wiring is the right way round, the headphone jack is on the top of the device, the micro USB is at the bottom PERFECT)
PLUS it solves the big problems i had. The S2 is lightning fast, fast like you wouldnt believe! Everything opens instantaneously including the camera which literately takes just a second to open and be ready to shoot.
Speaking of the camera the built in features are better (panorama up to 8 pictures, cartoon mode and beauty shot, as well as all the stuff the Arc has) and it films in 1080p!!! The quality is superb you just would not believe it was recorded on a phone!!! Oh AND you can use digital zoom at the highest quality setting by pinching the screen! Cool feature the Arc doesnt have at all let alone with a cool multi touch gesture!
I have had the phone running for about 3 days now and used it heavily (games, video, intensive browsing with heavy flash sites usually for 2 hours at a time) and not once have i needed to force close stuff with a task killer or restart the phone, the S2 just keeps on going with whatever you do to it. I have never known a phone capable of such use!
With my Arc i would of had to have run a task killer after EVERY task in order for it to be responsive enough to do something else at a reasonable speed. For example with the Arc if i watched a few flash videos in the browser and then pressed the home button, the Home Screen would be unresponsive for a couple of seconds and all the app shortcuts would have missing 'transparent' icons. After a few seconds the icons would come back and i would need to run a task killer to be able to do anything else or it would take up to 5mins even to load the FB app!
With the S2 i can just keep using it, task after task and it never slows down even a tiny bit, everything continues to be buttery smooth and instantaneous even after using several intensive apps!
The S2 never laggs at any time even when using a live wallpaper, its always buttery smooth and just as responsive. The Arc used to lag a bit when using a live wallpaper.
The S2 boots up in less than 15-20 seconds!!! The Arc took nearly a whole minute! Nothing so far has force closed and everything has opened almost instantaneously! The build quality is so much better, much sturdier and no wobbly buttons made of cheep plastic. Everything on the S2 is rock solid and built to a really high standard!
There are little bonus's with the phone too, the ROM and UI is much better designed. Theres a CM7 style settings widget in the notification tray, the music player looks and works brilliantly and includes a widget in the notification tray when its in use for album art and music controlls. Theres a 2MP front facing camera the Arc didnt have one at all and the battery seems to last longer. Theres loads of built in gestures, like pinching the screen in the browser when zoomed out brings up the tabbed windows screen, holding 2 fingers on the screen and then tilting the phone forward or back zooms in or out on photos and in the browser, holding an icon or a widget then tilting the phone left or right moves across the home screens and turning the phone upside down when you get a call silences the ring! Watch them here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxCW7U2m8dk
Theres also a wealth of handy built in apps from Samsung including a photo and video editor!, unlike the usual useless rubbish manufacturers put on phones plus even more handy stuff like built in screen capture by pressing 'home' and 'power' buttons together and it has that nice 'bump' effect the same as the iphone when you get to the top or bottom of a page or menu. Personally i find Touch Whiz 4.0 much better than the Arc launcher however i am using Launcher Pro (i had to buy i to replace the Arc's homescreen so i might as well get my moneys worth haha, plus i really like it)
All in all, reading peoples comments, i might agree that i had a faulty unit but even so, the S2 is miles ahead in my opinion. It just eats any task you give it with no hassel. Its never rebooted itself. It never laggs and has so many more built in features. The Super AmoLED screen is just breathtaking, the picture quality and colour depth must be seen to be believed!
Each is to their own, and im sure all the owners here love the Arc, but in my own opinion, especially if your a heavy user... GET THE S2!
P.S. For LiveView owners, disconnections are far and few between with the S2! With the Arc i would have to reconnect the LiveView every 1 or 2 hours whereas with the S2 i can sometimes go a whole day without needing to reconnect!

Hi all,
Now im generally not a fan of people posting 'hate' threads, but this phone has dissapointed me so much that i feel it necessary to point out why i turned to hate it and why im selling it and getting the Galaxy SII in order to help people that are thinking of buying this phone to make an advised decision.

I am not sure what world you are talking about, but want to comment on your points..
1. It constantly lags, and almost every app force closes (and YES i have reset the phone and used both .181 and .145 versions of the firmware.

Really??? I have more than 100 apps installed from Market & not a single app force closes & there is no lag. There are a lot of videos on youtube of ARC running smoothly with loads of apps, without lag or force close. Every review statets that & even it runs almost as sommth & fast as GalaxyS2 (Youtube Videos)
2. When the phone starts syncing accounts in the background it renders it unusable. The phone takes up to 5 minutes to load the Facebook app and longer for anything else.

I just can't believe that. 4 Arc in my house, and not a single has a similar problem. My phone runs normalls when it syncing..
3. Sony Ericsson's stupid decision to reverse the ground and mic wires so you cant use any other wired headphones with an inline control but the ones it came with. As discussed in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045973&page=1

I can't say anything about that coz i have no knowledge about that...

I have never used a mobile where a camera opens as fast as it does on ARC..
5. The USB socket is on the side at the top so you have to have a landscape dock which takes up more room (obviously only applies to people that use a dock with their phones).

Not a problem for me... But didn't you know that before buying?

You can root it although it's sim locked.. But anyway, how it's a negative point when it was YOU who bought it sim lock?
10. The Sony Ericsson UI is awful and downright ugly (again you can always install a different launcher, but thats money for an app that you shouldnt need in my opinion and it just covers the home screens, as soon as you enter the Settings, Dialler or Contacts your right back in the SEUI).

It's only personal choice, You can't tell others its ugly & awful. Many here mean that Samsung UI is awful.. But it depends on personal choice. SE UI was same when you decided to buy this phone & it was with this UI, the Arc was advertised..

A lot of videos available on net captured with Arc.. And after lastest update the minor bugs are already fixed..
I will go on to say though that the camera is the best phone camera i have ever used by far! Stunning photos everytime. And the same goes for the built in speaker.

And if you think Galaxy S2 would be really bugfree, then i will suggest to take a tour to Galaxy S2's section & i can only wish you good luck... And Bye!

i dont expect anything to be bug free, but after using several S2's to me it seems a lot less buggy than my Arc, again perhaps mine is faulty, but none the less for me personally i prefer the Samsung UI and features (built in gestures, settings on the notifications tray like in CM7 and all the little things that the Arc seems to be missing)
I do admit that my misses Arc keeps force closing and randomly rebooting but she still loves it I prefer the I9000 as u can see....can do more with it in regards to CM7....it works wonders on the I9000 but I'm not so sure about the Arc due its complexity of inner workings I.e bravia engine etc and the galaxy s 2 is pretty much the same as the I9000 just a faster processor and more ram...everything else is the same lol....personal preference....I9000

I have to agree with the video recording...BUT, when you play it back on another device/player the jittery lag is non existent. good luck with your new phone anyway.
Hmmmmm... I have been tossing up between the Arc and the S2 for several days now. I know the S2 is higher spec'ed but after reading reviews about the arc I decided that for my needs, the arc would be fine. After reading this though I just don't know...
The only one of those issues that is real is the headphone wiring one.. Everything else is either personal preference or faulty unit.

So the force close thing is a faulty unit? With a new baby on the way this is going to be the last phone I'll be able to buy for a while so I want to make sure I make the right choice. I'm upgrading from a Samsung Captivate so if the force close thing is a faulty unit, then everything else is going to be alot better than I currently have?
Of course it's a faulty unit.
Or some **** software installed.
Normally Arc is super snappy.

It may well be, he may have got a bad one and should take it back for an exchange. Most people's arcs are rock solid though.
can u answer sound quality question mentioned above?

IMO you have a duff phone or dodgy apps installed. If youve reset and it's still doing it it sounds like hardware so you should take it back for an exchange. Seriously, my arc is rock solid and it *flies*.

I agree on this one. Also the button is too fiddly and unreliable. SE get a free pass from me on this one cos the camera is simply amazing otherwise.

Ah, well you have only yourself to blame for this one. Research better before purchasing next time. (or just be patient and wait for someone to crack the bootloader)

Couldnt disagree more, i think it's a million miles better than anything samsung or htc have produced. But horses for courses innit. As for 3rd party launchers - the ability to change launchers is one of the joys of android, and plenty of good ones are FREE.
The dialer is pretty crap though (i recommend dialer2 from the market).

AFAIK this has been fixed in the recent firmware, probably related to your hardware problem in 1.
Cant really comment on your headphone issues, but they sound like reasonable things to have a problem with. Personally i think you have a faulty handset so i'd take it back if i were you. If the headphone issues and UI style are a dealbreaker i guess then the arc just isnt for you, but if not try again with working handset - dont dismiss the phone as being laggy/buggy because you got a duff one.
The Arc isn't really a bad phone....if your having problems with FCs etc then as Davey said it probably a dodgy app or a hardware fault. The only thing I don't like about it is the bootup time....it takes forever lol other than that its really snappy

Personally i've only used it a couple of times as an mp3 player - but it's been pretty good, at least as good as my dedicated mp3 player.
However i havent even touched the supplied headphones, so cant comment on those either way.
