[Endgadget] Gingerbread for SGS GT-I9000 coming Mid-April - Galaxy S I9000 General

Official word from Samsung's Finnish site informs us that local owners of its Galaxy S smartphone will be receiving their Gingerbread fix around the middle of this month. Less direct, but still pretty reliable, confirmation of this comes from UK carrier Three, who promises the same OS version will be arriving to its users of the handset "in a couple of weeks." Considering an Android 2.3.2 build for the Galaxy S already leaked out way back in February, few should be surprised at the timing of this release, but prior experience still urges us to be wary when it comes to Samsung and its software update schedules.

Yes. They got it from the XDA forums AKA here. I love these circular news items LOL

Right here, dude.

Engadget never heard about the gingerbread XXJVK which is 2.3.3.
Talkin about which portal is more reliable

I love the people who are now using the stories on the tech blogs which are using the rumors published here as sources, to validate the rumors...."well engadget agrees......". Yeah, right.
Considering that engadget is now just a huffpo style news aggregator thanks to AOL, they are hardly a reputable source, even if they were reporting something new.

Regards

Man all the batching and whining in those comments is just pathetic.
Samsung looks to be the first to update a non-Google-branded phone to 2.3...repeat if this drops soon Samsung will be the first to update a non-Google phone to 2.3. There is the Nexus One and S, the Xperia Arc released with 2.3 and other than that there is no official 2.3 at all.
Finally I guess it's too much for many people in the US and Canada to put it together that it is our lame carriers that continue to chew on the updates for months longer. Not Samsung's fault if Bell takes 3 months to install their crap and break things while AT&T takes even longer to cripple native features that they don't like.
The criers can ride a boat in the river of their tears all the way to Moto or HTC and guess what there is no 2.3 there and won't be for months. The Desire is not getting it until at least May/June and guess what: any carrier delays those will be added on there too.

great find! I'm willing to wait as long as they make it better. I have to wait anyway since I'm rooted so "early November" may not hold true. Hopefully rooted roms won't be too far behind.
not sure why it is taking so long since Verizon will have the Samsung Continuum next week which is already running 2.2 stock. or, at least thats what has been leaked.
Continuum is running 2.1....
http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-continuum-video-hands
I don't mean to be a killjoy, but I would like to point out that the way this press release is worded, I believe it ONLY applies to the I9000 model, which is the European Galaxy S. One reason I think that is because it states it will be available via Kies, which is not used for OTA distribution for the US versions. Also, every US version has unique features that have to be accounted for in developing the release.
Now, I'm not saying that we won't get Froyo in November, just that this press release from Samgung proves nothing in that regard. Due to carrier customizations, I'm waiting for a press release either directly from Verizon, or from Samsung that specifically mentions Verizon and/or the Fascinate by name.

spaces added to http and www due to account limits
Yeah no one can really come away from that with any facts. Just opinions. I mean they do state it will be Coming to all variants of the galaxy s. The problem is the use phrases like "we expect it to be to all carriers by the end of November" not "it will be to all carriers by........" so that's a little suspect. Like I said in my last thread ill ever write about froyo for this phone, its sad that they put some of the most potent hardware ever made with the ****tiest software ever and the normal lackluster Samsung amount of support. Due to the support I will not buy another Samsung phone. I can't remember exact dates I've had all of the last 5 major VZW phones they released on launch day.(D,DInc,DC, D2, and now fascinate) this phone came out almost a month after the D2 launched with froyo? If the Galaxy S is Samsung's flagship what were they doing with all this extra time they took to launch it after all of the other galaxy s phones. Again camera is great, camcorder is awesome screen is amazing, GPU is the absolutely best available in a mobile device, and the use RFS and this bull**** software and the topped it off with almost a year old software in eclair? Wtf. Ill be keeping this until LTE comes out. Praying that one of the first LTE phones that comes out isn't Samsung BC then ill be waiting long. Anyway. Rant off. Here's to hoping and praying we actually see froyo sometime, if anytime on our phones.

I can't believe anyone still believes this yarn today. The Engadget story was debunked all over the internet yesterday, for example in this thread on the XDA Vibrant forum.
Basically, Engadget was wrong. Again.
The press release they based that on clearly came from the Samsung subsidiary in the UK and Ireland. The announcement's scope was for "all operators" there. None of it applies to the U.S. carriers. The Twitter sites for Samsung USA confirmed later yesterday that the UK announcement did not apply here, and reiterated what Samsung USA has said all along: Froyo will be deployed in the U.S. sometime this year.
Engadget is irresponsible, a day an a half later, for not correcting the erroneous story.

Android 2.2 update to finally hit the Samsung Galaxy S
After months of waiting owners of the formidable Samsung Galaxy S Android handset will today be able to update their devices to run the latest incarnation of the Google mobile OS, Android 2.2, FroYo.
The flagship Samsung handset became a major player in the smartphone market following its launch back in July but has remained devoid of the OS upgrade despite FroYo landing on a number of its closest competitors.

“Froyo starts rolling out today; everyone will have it by the end of Nov. To prepare, get the latest version of Kies.” announced Samsung UK via its official Twitter feed earlier today. Kies is Samsung’s proprietary upgrading solution needed to update the handset’s software.
The 4-inch mobile powerhouse will add a host of new features to its already hefty arsenal with the upgrade to Android version 2.2 including the coveted full Flash support and device tethering. Google Maps GPS navigation and voice guidance will also land on the 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel camera touting iPhone challenger.
Elsewhere in the land of Google mobile operating system, the imminent arrival of version 2.3 of the hugely popular software, dubbed Gingerbread, appears closer than ever as latest reports and rumours peg the Android update to make its way to developers in SDK form as early as next week, November 11th.

Isn't it a news of some interest for us Vibrant owners that UK is getting Froyo for Galaxy S? Sure it is....that is because Vibrant is a Samsung Galaxy S series phone and an official roll out in UK means Samsung has Froyo working well for Galaxy S phones at this time and it means US is going to get Froyo soon.
OP didnt say Vibrant is getting Froyo on so and so date, like a bunch of BS threads in the past.

GOOD NEWS! for Galaxy S owners, the Gingerbread man will be coming to Samsung Most popular smartphone (Galaxy S) Flag-ship.
Remeber, Earlier this Month, Samsung Mobile India Twitter feed tells the fact that the mobile will get Android 2.3 (Screenshot below), The company kept it short and simple with a brief tweet: "Yes we will get gingerbeard on GalaxyS." but no other info announced from the company about the update. Well, Today we Got a Confirmation That Samsung Galaxy S is Getting Another Update probably on February,2011 may be Earlier and this update will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread onboard. Gingerbread brings with it an improved user interface which is slicker and more streamlined, along with better power management. It also boasts one-touch word selection and copy/paste, support for multiple cameras and goodies such as NFC (Near Field Communications).

This is a joke for sure.
My S has Eclair, till this time there is no official froyo upgrade available for my phone and samsung is going to release gingerbread the coming February?
Are we talking about Samsung or about the comedy channel?

This is the difference between porting (having to program the drivers for about everything) and having a native release (like HTC on N1).
Now that NexusS is in the hands of Google, we can expect faster release!

Froyo has been out since October/early November, officially released by Samsung. Blame your carrier if your not getting the update. Contrary to belief, Samsung is quicker than HTC when pushing out updates, it's just that HTC devices have a much larger userbase on XDA, hence the quicker porting/updating.

N1 is the base on wich they developped the update, don't you think it's normal it gets prior updates?
It is also pretty usual that all the "clones" of N1 will get theses updates pretty fast, since HTC only have to put their bloatware on it and it's pretty much done!
Thanks! Hope this is true.

Both of these are hardware dependant and both the Galaxy S doesn't have. The multiple camera support is for using with taking 3D pictures and/or recording 3D movies. And NFC is there so that android devices can attempt to get ahead of the iphone5 which is said to support it but these needs a dedicated chip.

I have had one problem with this phone since purchase in September. You need to try a custom rom with a kernel upgrade, not like there is any lag in stock JPU.
I don't get how so many people complain about this great device when it can be pimped out within 30 minutes.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Some Galaxy still don't have an official Froyo update yet. And the ones that do are still laggy. The 2.2.1 is finally a ROM that isn't laggy but its not official its a leak.
If Samsung comes out with Gingerbread they will screw it up. I'd rather have the community come up with a basic Gingerbread that works. And the community will do it long before Samsung does.
dude this is samsung, we all saw what happened with froyo and all the delays.
I have little hope for a febuary release, i say it's closer to june
2.2.1 is a revelation. I have put it on my galaxy s and its no longer laggy, really smooth, new market, lock screen wallpapers etc. Finally its transformed the phone into the powerhouse it always had the potential to be. I urge you all to get 2.2.1 ASAP!

Do you expect us to get official Gingerbread

After no rom leaks in the past few weeks after JPY I am starting to wonder will Samsung update our phones to gingerbread or leave us behind when Galaxy S 2 phone is announced next Month. I know gingerbread was just announced but usually roms leak out from Samsung regularly most probably so they can beta test
but no new roms is giving me bad vibes
i was thinking the same thing.. only new roms coming out (leaks) are 2.2 not even 2.2.1 ... i would think if they were working on gingerbread we should have seen a leaked rom by now. i have a feeling they are dumping for newer phones.
We wont get Ginger bread if we where samsung would have announced it by now to sell more phones
We will get it.
SGS will get Gingerbread ... Comfirmed by Samsung Mobile India on Twitter Account.
I do remember reading somewhere that Samsung claimed we'd be getting Gingerbread via twitter, if that's anything to go by... Q1 2011 was the 'expected' arrival for it too though I thought? :S like gingerbread isn't just a revision, such as 2.2 –> 2.2.1, its a whole buildbuild upgrade which may require more effort than expected (even supercurio and the cm team haven't made any significant galaxy s gingerbread improvements lately besides their initial work).

It Samsung wants to stay in this fight ... than they have to...It make no sense to release Galaxy S 2 and not providing 2.3 to 10 milions SGS Owner .... That would be wrong decision from my point of view...
i dont think, ppl will simply move to SGS2 for the sake of 2.3
seems likely to get 2.3 at this point, but it will take some time - they might also have killed some "leakers", we didn't get newer 2.2.1 builds either..
I don't care much for gingerbread i just want now a perfect 2.2.1 rom from samsung with no lag and gps like JM9.
I got the feeling we will , 10 million sold. Would be bad for their name not releasing. But also , i wouldnt be suprised if they dont release it.

Samsung has told Pocket-lint that it is unsure whether the latest version of Android, version 2.3, will be coming to the Samsung Galaxy S, following the announcement that its new flagship phone, the Samsung Nexus S, will be packing the new operating system when it launches later this month.
Rather than simply telling us whether it is or it isn’t, Samsung has told us:
“In case a new version of Android operating system is publicly announced and released, Samsung will review the possibility of implementation of such new version to the existing Samsung products with Android operating system (“Update”).
"Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors”.

to me that means if we bring a better phone out called galaxy s2 we will not update the galaxy s because the new phone will all ready have the update installed so we can rip more people off
just found this online and it doesnt look good......... JK Shin, president of Samsung Mobile, has now gone on record saying that we'll get a new Galaxy S device at Mobile World Congress in February that'll feature Gingerbread, a dual-core processor
I _would_ be upset if there was no update after the initial Froyo - knowing that a lot better is available. Especially knowiing it would affect 10 million customers.
2.2.1 or 2.3 would not matter too much. It doesn't seem 2.3 offers a lot compared to 2.2. And perhaps the ext4-basedness of the Nexus S is problematic, for example for mass storage support.
It seems Samsung is pretty good at offering features of the next version in a previous incarnation. My 2.1 had the wifi AP - which belonged to 2.2.
Let's hope for some support. My primary hope would be lag fixes and after that ongoing security support.

But if we think about this 2.2.1 gave us a ota update feature.

Short: YES.
I'm pretty certain we'll see gingerbread..although it'll probably be a bit of a wait.

Date *kinda* set for Gingerbread's release on Epic

From ComputerWorld
"Samsung Galaxy S [UPDATED 4/7/11]: All signs point to Gingerbread being in the cards for Samsung's popular Galaxy S line of phones. That includes the Samsung Captivate on AT&T, Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint, Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile, and Samsung Fascinate on Verizon (which as of now has yet to even receive Froyo). Rumors started popping up in January that some Galaxy S phones could see an Android 2.3 upgrade as early as March or April. Samsung's official Samsung Mobile India Twitter account, meanwhile, has stated numerous times that the Galaxy S will receive Gingerbread -- version 2.3.3 -- but that a definite launch date has not been set. Samsung's Romanian Facebook page has issued similar promises. In late March, software said to be a leaked version of Samsung's official Galaxy S Gingerbread update surfaced on an Android developers' forum, heightening speculation that a rollout could be near. In addition to all of that, Samsung's Finnish site has now posted a news release stating that Gingerbread will reach Galaxy S handsets "in mid-April.""
Another good article to read from Lifehackerwith a spreadsheet of release dates.
-Troll
lol "Troll".
Well, let's see, even if gingerbread were CLOSE to being released, don't think of the Galaxy S as a sign.
First of all, the Galaxy S is Samsung's MAIN FLAGSHIP device, AND Galaxy S's are only released in Europe, I believe.
So therefore, even if Samsung had a finished product of 2.3 for us by mid-april, Sprint's going to have to add their crap to it and **** it up some more, make it even more buggier than Samsung achieved, and send an OTA that will have to be pulled the day after it comes out because it'll fry people's phones. SOOO, if we WERE to get Gingerbread, I'd say by August-Mid September at the earliest.
Sorry for bringing your hopes down...just stating the facts.
