My Droid x keeps try to do a system update. It has already downloaded and it at least 2 times a day it fry's to install it. Its very annoying because it auto shuts of and then it fails to install it. Anyone else seen this and if so do you have any tips to make it stop.

Are you rooted?
Did you change any of the bloatware?

The update is looking for the bloatware. When it doesn't find it the installation will fail. What update is it trying to install? If you have titanium backup go to updater and freeze it. That should stop it from constantly trying to update.

If you made a stock backup prior to roming, themeing or debloating, restore that and the update will work.

Hi guys, I'd just like to know whether or not your Nexus 7 can still update normally i.e Settings>About Tablet>System Updates if it has a unlocked bootloader and custom recovery. Just like to know in advance before I install Clockwork Mod. Thanks in advance.
Once unlocked & rooted- install the app OTA RootKeeper- it's free in the Google Play store.
It's lets you temporarily un-root for OTA updates- then easily re-root after the update's done.
root keeper only works on minor updates. And does not work correctly for all devices . I do not see why google would root app checks before allowing a update. and have the updates to skip the apps you removed. I hope anyway. Acer is a basket case when it comes to ota updates. everything has to be exact as it was bought no frozen removed apps no root .
grrrrr its mine let me do what i wish with it .
Anything right now is only a guess as the device is quite new.

Thanks, but would an ota update install through a custom recovery normally, or would I have to get the zip file off xda manually and do it myself

This method would allow you to get the updates over the air like normal through settings, about phone. But you may need to install a custom recovery afterwards.
However since you're rooted you'll have the opportunity of getting software before the OTA stuff comes out most likely.
My advice would be that even though you can do it that way, you don't have a reason too and you're better off not doing it that way unless a specific reason that you need to comes up.
Deciding whether or not I will dev on this ... liking the stock experience on this device. Probably will root so I can make a custom kernel and ROM. Thanks for your help guys!

okay so i updated to jellybean when it released and never rooted so today i rooted and installed safestrap and i deleted the verizon apps i dont use and i heard that if you dont have the exact apps you cant update to the latest version of android... so if our phones get an update how will i update???? i am nervous i wont be able to update my phone
Just download rsd lite 6.14.x. then get a few .sbf files for the droid m. Get more than one just to be sure you get your phone back in less than 30 min. Also download Motorola device manager. Its about 32mb or so. You know its installed correctly when it recognizes your phone by name ie xt907 or whatever you have plugged in. This particular program works with only Motorola in the same way that Odin works for samsung. If you have root then use Any reboot program (I use ROM toolbox) and reboot into boot loader. If your phone is borked then press volupanddown at the same time and that gets boot loader too. That combo only works when its broken, there are other instructions if its not but just use an app if its working. Plug it in search for file(on RSS litre next to the large empty rectangular white box, decompress and begin flashing. Goes fast until it gets to ext.4 or some such. That takes about 15 min. Then it keeps going 22.22(you will know what that means if you are doing this!) and then reboots into ICS. There is a .sbf fast boot file on here that is the jellybean factory rom too but I never used it. I know this works and if you need to you can pm me at any time. As soon as I see it I will get back with you. This sounds a lot more complicated than it is. I learned everything I know about android from XDA. I'm itchin to pay that back.

Omg thank you so much this helps so much even If I could go back to ICS that's fine but where do I get these .sbf files and the jellybean one
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
I don't know about the sbf files but you can get the stock jellybean firmware from here

It contains all the Verizon and amazon bloatware goodness. I did some searching around Google and as far as I know, a update is likely to happen in a few months. Not 100% sure on it though.
Thank you but I flashed back to stock and I am back to my bloated glory

You can install Titanuim Backup and freeze all bloat
That's crazy. The Australian Razr M has NO BLOAT. It's pretty much a vanilla ICS (with JB on the way). Our bloat consisted of 1 app.
You can debloat your phone with an app called p3droid toolbox for razr m

I just froze the bloat apps with stock settings cause its pretty much the same thing as freezing

Might be an answered question. Was just wondering if there's anyway to disable the autoupdate. I like my S4 the way it is right now and don't want any chance that it might autoupdate to android 4.3 which can mess up rooting etc even though i have rootkeeper. At least til issues with new android ver are all clear. So anyway to disable this auto os update? thnx..
Your rooted that's enough to disable I believe cus it wont update if modified. .I might be wrong

Rooted my nexus 10 and that didn't prevent it from dnlding the update. At least it has the decency not to go ahead w installing the downloaded update. Now I hv this constant notification on the status bar to install it. Don't want this to happen also to S4
4.3 is at least 1-2 months away so I doubt you need to do this. And got a blunt is mostly right. Being rooted will not allow the installation to happen. It will download the update and tell you have a system update but it won't install on its own.

So any danger of me inadvertently clicking on the update notification and update happens and wiping out my settings? or rooting won't let it updated at all and to update you have to go back to stock first?

The only way of being able to update its just having a rooted phone with no mods in someway and also having stock recovery, if you are rooted with a custom rom or mods and have a different recovery then yes if you click the update accidently then you wont have no problem what so ever its just going to abort.

On my rooted S4 (CF-auto-root), I also have TWRP recovery installed. So this would qualify then as a different recovery? Additionally i also got MF9HotspotMod-Odexed and international SIM unlock on there. So i am guessing all this should be enough to prevent any update?
OTAs won't flash in custom recoveries. If you for some reason hit install update it would boot into recovery and try to install but fail.

Hey everyone I have a few questions hopefully that can be answered. I took my phone to bestbuy today because I jacked up my recovery and it disappeared so they fixed that and now my root is gone which is what I wanted to happen because of the 4.3 update. If my phone is still rooted somehow will the update jack up my phone? Or will it just get rid of the root and make it like everyone else's phone? Second question. When I try and look for updates by hitting the update button in settings it won't let me do so. I remember freezing DM manager with titanium and I don't know why it would still be frozen because my phone got flashed back to stock. Does anyone else have this problem? Or is it just me... :/ I have a feeling its just me. Hopefully not and its just a common prob. If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it. Thank you!

you took it to best buy. to restore it to stock. it is stock, not rooted. The update button is for updates from samsung, you just got restored to the latest update. there is no updates available.
Is titanium backup still installed?

I uninstalled it cuz there was no need for it anymore. I don't have root access anymore but It is just odd that the Software Update button worked before and I was able to at least connect to at&t to check for an update and now it won't. I was wondering if there is a possibility that something glitched and at&t DM server is still frozen.

look in about phone>Device Status, does it say 'modifed' or 'normal'?'
Sorry for the late reply... it says Samsung so I'm assuming normal.

Not sure how many other people are getting this update. But I just got Android 4.4 KitKat on my Moto X.
Its downloading right now and should be installed in the next few minutes.
Odd Note:
I got another (very small) update before the kitkat update came.
This small update failed, so when I went to go retry it instead of saying the the other update it said that KitKat 4.4 was ready to download. :victory:

So, 4.4 failed too. Perhaps because of my bootloader unlock? I'm not rooted.
Anyone have any guides to revert to full stock?
Got the 4.4 update today. Didn't notice a intermediate update though. - stock - locked BL.
The update started last week, and the stock firmware is posted in a thread with instructions

need to flash to stock then take the OTA or you'll see endless reboot loop.
