Good luck. I *just* came off 10 days of being capped this morning. Very frustrating, but now i'll be a bit better about my data choices. That's hard to do when my phone is faster than the DSL line I have at work...

How you guys use 5 GB in a month baffles me. I don't even touch 1 GB. I suppose it helps that I don't have 3G in my area, though

don't let the cap let you down.I still have a few days left over. You could still be using the internet but without videos. Its slow and a pain but its better then nothing

That is really odd. I am on a month to month flexpay and my data always shows as 0 used.... it never registers....

I download many roms and test many roms so due to that I usually go over 5gb

me too, plus the fact that I dont have home internet. I tether my smart tv and my xbox so 5gb comes quick.

Lol, I think the lack of 3G is definitely related.
5GB was a lot several years ago. With Amazon Cloud Player I'm pretty sure I could hit that easily...no tethering involved.
Definitely do about that per day on my DSL line. It's just not that much if Netflix/music streaming are involved. I would leave AT&T, but my only other option is a bush league cable company with a 25 GB per month cap. Yeah, 25. Please, government, step in and pwn these jerks.

Im at 3.5 with 10 days into billing so I will be there at some point.
Streaming Via slingbox tends to suck data.
@Binary what did you do?

Hey binary.......
Wtf man?
And other guy. Its really easy to hit 5gb when u owe time warner money and ur phone is primary internet. Flash content is a ***** AND I work in a kitchen 40+ hrs and stream pandora on a speaker system for the customers (mostly reggae, its a laid back place). Add to that, dl'ing roms, n64 and psx games and mp3s using download apps plus youtube, couple full episodes of conan and just 1 night I decided to stream the movie "paul". Its very easy to hit 5gb. No tethering either. Luckily Im not changing roms anytime soon until gps fix for 2.3s happens, and I think I got a decent library of games now, so I just gotta slow down my youtubing a bit and I should be ok.

You wont get capped as long as you don't have the "4G unlimited plan", my friend has an old plan like I SHOULD have (asshole tmobile changed my plan after they grandfathered me which I think is illegal) and they don't monitor his data use.

Atrix data usage

Has anyone noticed an exorbitant amount of data being used? I just checked my bill and Im well over 3GB of data and I've never tethered my phone. I did notice that from time to time I have packets of data over 200mb randomly through out my bill. What is causing all this data usage
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Well some apps do auto updating like Facebook and Engadget. Turn those off or change them to 1 hour periods. Also download 3G Watchdog and watch how much data you use. You can set it so that when you get to 1.9GB it automatically turns off 3G/data. Worked good for me when I had my 2GB plan. I got my unlimited back though.

this isnt normal there shouldnt be any programs using 200mb of data without you downloading or using it. it could be a rogue app downloading this and killing your battery too. get the app 3G watchdog it will tell you how much data each program is using.
I don't understand what you people are doing. But yes I agree with the OP. I'm using much more data than even my previous Captivate. I explain it with the fact that this phone is about 23 times faster so I use it at least twice as much to do at least four times more...
My regular is like 1.6gb. Seldom tethering and almost never used to download movies/files/other big things. Thats the only way I can see someone using that much data. But any decent broadband connection would be so much faster I don't understand why anyone would...
My father-in-law used 40 gigs in January on a 3g iPhone. The last 6 months he has averaged about 30 gigs. AT&T just (a couple days ago) served him a notice that he had a week to get his usage under control or he'd be kicked from the network. We are mere mortals to his power usership.

LOL wtf does he do with his phone to use 40Gb of data in a month?! I use my phone frequently every day and I usually end up with 1Gb or less. I'm on WiFi at home and work though...so maybe that's why.
Either way, OP, Twitter probably isn't the culprit. Even if it was updating every 15 minutes no way it would use 200Mb even over the entire month. Twitter uses virtually no data at all...there's gotta be something else that's using it up.
For me it was Dungeon Defenders. For some reason when updating (it's usually like a 600-700Mb update) my WiFi flickered (I think because the power flickered...there was a storm going on outside at the time) and it defaulted to 3G for the entire update. 700Mb of data all in about an hour lol. Doesn't bother me much since I have unlimited, but still.
I think I might have just noticed what is using so much data. I downloaded 3g watch dog to see what my usage habits are like. Everything seemed normal (kinda noticed I used 10mb of data in less than 24hr) until I ran a bench mark using smartbench then another bench tool ( the one with the white rabbit) and I went from 10mb to 24mb in those two tests. I had been running benchmarks around 10 or more times a day so that might explain it

This was talked about months ago Z. People thought it meant cell phones too but it does not.
I heard about it being laptop cards and mobile hotspots, not tablets as well. My Evo view 4g is useless now, wonder if a change like this lets me out of my tablet contract... I have the cheapest tablet data plan but I use a bit of 4g. No torrenting or anything like that but I feel kind of lied to. Stupid iPhone ruining everything for the rest of us.

If they kill unlimited cell data, not really sure where to go next. At&t is evil and doesn't care about it's customers and Verizon is almost as bad. T-Mobile will either flounder or become a fully owned subsidiary of at&t. US phone market really sucks. At&t and Verizon are making more money than ever and put all but the dregs straight into the pocketbooks of their investors.

Define 'mobile broadband'. Is that like tethering from your phone if you do it officially? I'm under the impression 'hotspot' would be more like if you have one of those wifi cards. Will the actual data through my phone to ONLY my phone still remain unlimited?
If not, Sprint is going to be in a world of hurt. This is the only thing keeping people there right now. Their service is okay, their 3G speed is pathetic. If they implement this before they roll out Network Vision, there is absolutely ZERO reason to stick with them. After Network Vision is a maybe, as then maybe the speeds will be something sort of useful.
If you pay for the Hotspot on your phone it has a 5GB limit and then throttles you down I believe. Mobile Broadband is a card you plug into a laptop to give you internet in any 3G or 4G area.

When you run the paid Hotspot it signs you into the network to verify you pay for it. At that time it must keep track of your usage until you sign out. We would have to see the terms and conditions of the $30 hotspot addition to be sure. But the also have hardware hotspots which I am sure the new caps are geared towards.

I have an Airave also and it is mainly for voice but it will increase your 3G speeds. Although it's kind of pointless since you need an internet connection for the Airave to work.
Also to OP, it took you years to get one? I made one phone call (albeit 30 minutes long) and received mine within a week. If it wasn't for my Airave I would have to drop Sprint.

That is cool, I need me one of these. I'm gonna check it out sometime next week. Thanks!
I also got one without any issues when I asked. Free.
One note: DO NOT USE IT AS YOUR ROUTER. The instructions had you set it up like this:
--->internets----modem----airave----wifi/router))))computer
The airave acts as the DHCP server using this set up... and it's terrible and slow. It was for me anyway. It's just a crappy at NAT and DHCP stuff.
Instead, it should be set up as follows:
--->internets----modem----wifi/router---airave
(and computer connected to the wifi/router, not the airave.)
Some manual configuration will be needed, and ports will have to be opened and forwarded on your router.
I have wifi but I've never been able to use 3g so pretty much I've been paying sprint for garbage service so I am now going to take advantage of unlimited data

BTW, here's my speeds with the Airave...

Can you recommend any rebranded ANDROID smartphone that will work on t-mobile 4G network?

I cannot speak for your provider but as long as you are using a debranded handset there should not be any way for them to tell you are using tethering...wtf do they think people are doing with that much data on a mobile though is beyond me.
These people are the worst kind of scum, you should find another network if they are seriously going to start playing games like that.

Just got this text from tmobil as well .. Im on a monthly 4G plan and i paid full price for my phone.
Are they really going to cut off my tethering or is this a mass text everyone is getting?
I dont even have the option to add a hotspot feature to my plan lol.

I have removed tethering manager, device management and the wsmpl-whatever.apk (forgot its name, another component of device management).

I think its a mass text they sent out if u , me and the other person got the same text. They better not remove my tethering or else I'm gonna pissed. I also removed the tethering manager but Idk if that's enough. I hope they can't see I'm tethering with that crap removed
Also ur phone has tethering capabilities and can tether even if ur plan doesn't have it. It's the same phone as mine and im monthly 4g too

My WAG is that they're texting anyone who's ever used the built-in tethering app.
I tether 4days/week (although I use relatively little data) using the CyanogenMod tethering functionality and haven't received the message.
The most I've used is 600MB/mo, so it's not like I'm hosing them. But if they restrict my tethering I will drop that line. I lived without mobile data for a long time and can do so again easily. I only hand out my Google voice number so dropping this line won't affect my contacts.

Yes I know I have it. just like using the built in cuz there's only one option and less confusing options. Idk if they can detect tethering with that app. Hoping someone that knows can clarify this

Just thought of this:
Im sure tmobil can tell which browser you are using to view web pages. if they see you using internet exploder, its obvious you are tethering.

Question.
It says not compatible with mobile hot spot, I assume they mean tethering
when I was with Sprint it was the same deal, of course since I was rooted and simply got the wifitether.apk no problems at all.
Will this be the same thing?
I tether all the time, I assume anyone that needs the unlimited basically does as well.
Wonder if there will be anything for the monthly4g? Right now I have the $30 100min 5GB data, unlimited text. I need more minutes.

This is truly awesome, right now im on the 2g plan, so changing to this unlimited plan will cost me $10 more a month, sounds like a deal to me. No more crappy wifi that I have at my home!! And no more fighting with my bro over the wifi!
This is a pathetic excuse for wifi

Canada is still so, so behind...
Sign me up! $5 less than the 5gb tether plan, and I don't even tether. justifies leaving Verizon and giving up my grandfathered unlimited data plan!
no one answered me yet.
I assume they will only take the tethering option off the menu for the phone, but I will still be able to tether correct?

Existing customers can simply change their data plans, provided they are on Classic or Value plans (not Legacy or grandfathered, but that may change)
Tethering will be disabled on this plan similar to how it is disabled on the current 2GB data plan once 100MB is exceeded.
There will be NO option to add the $15 tethering & mobile hotspot feature add on to this new plan at this time. Customers wanting tethering will be advised to take the 5GB or 10GB plan instead.
As always, rooted devices will be able to find work arounds, which i would anticipate seeing an increase in customers visiting these forums seeking "one click roots" and then not getting the joke when they are redirected to the noob video...
Financially this makes sense for magenta as they have been getting squeezed at both ends; losing customers up to red & blue, losing them laterally to yellow, and also losing them down to MVNOs & their own M4G product.
Although i do not have any info on the new data plan being available for M4G, i would anticipate it NOT being offered.
With 500,000 postpaid losses lass quarter combined with 250,000 prepaid additions, there is a serious concern that this trend will continue.
There needs to be some substantial reason to stop the churn as well as migrate existing M4G customers to a postpaid Value plan.

I'm paying $25 more for the "unlimited premium + hotspot" which is the 5GB plan.
If this is going to cost $20 more for value customers, does it mean I'm going to pay $5 less if add this to my plan?

Yes but you will lose the hotspot feature, unless it still works with a custom rom
