Hey all. I have searched but I was unable to find a thread pertaining this issue.
Phone: Android Dev Phone 1
Running: JFv1.50 ADP1.5
What has happened is that today SU/Root seemingly stopped working. I discovered it when I bought Kosh's Screenshot app and started it up. The app requires SU permission, and therefore the "SU Request" window popped up. But it's blank. A blank black screen which eventually will run low on memory and then force close.
I then tried to open the Superuser Permission app, same result. Opened Task Manager for Root Users, same deal. Opened the Terminal Emulator and typed "su", which actually worked! I still had SU privs there. Closed the TE and decided to reboot the phone, and now I don't have SU privs in TE anymore. Everything that's non root related is still working fine.
Does anyone have an idea what's happening here? I suspect that maybe the Market Enabler app or the AdsFree apps could have something to do with it, because they're the only root related apps I have installed the last few weeks, before this problem occurred.
I'm sure a wipe would fix this glitch, but I'd prefer not to do that unless it's necessary. Plus, it would be nice to know what's causing this, so I can avoid it in the future.
Same thing has happened to me. It worked fine for Term Emu, task manager, and ad block. But I tried using an OC app and when super user popped up blank. All my previous apps still work but any new root apps I install do not work. Not sure why though and the only way I found to fix it is to wipe. Do you have your apps on the sd card? I'm using the old method haven't gotten around to trying the new method. Not sure if that is the issue or not, the old version of super user never gave me any issues.
I did a wipe, and it sorted the problem out, for some root apps. Now I'm back to the same crap again though, the SU Request window pops up but it's all black and eventually it force closes.
According JF's blog he included "a much better Superuser app, courtesy of zinx" in the 1.50 release. It's obviously what's causeing our problems, I never had an issue with the old one, but I don't know what to do about it. I don't want to go back to 1.1 or Haykuro's builds. I guess I'm stuck with a semi-crippled JFv1.50 ADP1.5 until someone with more brains than me finds and posts a proper solution.
Yeah Ive been noticing the same thing. Also the superuser list GUI is horrible. I liked how in the last one you can choose what programs you'd want to remove su access from.

Exactly. I'm not sure what he means by "a much better Superuser app", because for a layman like myself it seems a lot worse than the old one
This is just going from bad to worse. Now I discovered I have no positioning via wifi/3G anymore. I have to start the GPS and go outside and wait for a signal to get a lock on my position, which sucks. What the hell is going on? If not even a wipe is enough I guess I'm looking at a complete reinstall, but if all this has happened once it can/will happen again. I would much prefer to find the cause of all this crap.
Ok, so I found the cause for the Assisted GPS issue at least. My Micro SD card needed repairs. I put it in a SD card adapter and plugged it in to my laptop and let Vista repair the file system (apparently there were close to 100 errors on the damn thing) and now it seems to be working again.
Edit: This might actually have fixed my issues with the superuser permissions too. Knock on wood. I'll have to get back to you on this.
I'm having this Exact issue
I am having this exact same issue on dudes build. I have tried everything from scanning to formatting the SD i have flashed back and forth from Jf1.42 to jf1.50 and then to all different dude builds and i have no clue what to do next.
I do a wipe every time i flash and the only way to get any su access is to have jf1.42 or haykuro build. Anyone Else having an issue? I have been working on this for 3 days straight now...
For me it was an SD card issue. If you have a spare card, try that instead, or if you can borrow a card from a friend, just to see if it resolves your problems.
I realize that you have repaired/formatted your SD card, but it could be something wrong with it that screws things up. Worth a try, right?
Absolutely I'm looking for one right now thanks for the quick response. I'll let you know if it works. I have a 2gb sandisk in there now, so i still have my 1gb and my girlfriends 1gb too. Her phone has no su problems at all.
I also ran across the same problem reported here, only a wipe solved it. I believe it had something to do with the Market Enabler (non-signed) app, which was the only one I installed that first showed me the dreadful empty SU screen...
Fixed It
My Problem has been fixed by formatting the sd card with the phone itself.
I copied off all my info, unmounted it from the computer, unmounted it from the phone, this gave the option to format the sd card.
Once that was done i copied all my data back and when i installed programs from my sd i have not had a single su problem since.
I was having all these same problems in JF's 1.5 build, and none of the wiping/formatting SD/trying a different SD card combinations did the trick. Then, I went into JF's blog post where he released 1.5, and someone posted there that enabling USB debugging would fix the issue. I did this, and what do you know, now my superuser permissions app works again in everything, even in unsigned apps! Maybe this is why a wipe fixed it for some people, and not for others?

Not to Jesus resurrect this thread, but I had the same issue and same fix as n17ikh here on the ION build. Enabled USB debugging and su/superuser permissions started working Too bad I have to disable USB debugging in order for my car stereo to mount my G1 as a USB device, but at least I have a solution
Hope this helps anyone else who may stumble upon this.
Hey I have the Fat32/EXT2 setup on my memory card, so if I wanted to upgrade, will it still work fine and also this new 1.51 I would grab the US version wouldnt I? Then would it be a smooth upgrade or what? I swear I hate when so many different firmwares come out, then cupcake etc. Not even sure if JF has cupcake or what that was all about, cause I thought things still had issues?
Anyways do I just upgrade or is there more I would have to do? And is JF cupcake in anyway?
when you flash the new firmware you will delete the files, so most likely all you'll need to do after you flash is to copy the files back to flash0 and reboot. you may have to reinstall your apk's but they should still be on your sdcard, so just run linda's file manager to access them.
So if I do upgrade, I am going to have to copy what back to flash0? I hate being confused, been sitting here the past hour reading threads and not sure what exactly I am supposed to be doing. >.< Thing about me is I always research before playing with my toys... Never wanna make a mistake. So many mods one can do on a G1 not sure when someone upgrades what has to be done again >.< Got too many apps to reinstall one by one.
goto the thread about appstosd program.
Looking at the comparison chart right now. Seems JF ADP is better now since I guess it has built in apps to sd already? Should I just convert from the Tmobile version to the ADP one? If so would I have to "wipe" to do that?
Edit: Ok I just learned of JF Rom update app on the market, If I use that and update, I take it update radio 1st then the to 1.51? Also after I would do that, to relink my apps, Do I need to use the script or would it auto do that? Which steps am I using here?
Well ok I see if I wanted to change build types I would wanna wipe then start up. So I would assume then If I wanted to change builds, I need to go back and install 1 by one again? Or whats the deal with that? Not sure what nandroid would do for that.
All jf builds now support a2sd, but it does not link for you. After you install them, you'll hav e to manually link say /data/app to the folder in sd. Read the various a2sd posts and you'll know how.
Also, perform a nandroid backup before you upgrade. You could choose not to wipe and see if the phone works. (But you're strongly advised to delete dalvik-cache after loading a new build.) If it doesn't, you can always go back to recovery mode and do a wipe. (Wiping will not clear the system you've just updated.)
Ok update. Here is what I have done, In the past I used Lucids for the app to sd and then the data and cache move. That was for RC33.
Now I used JF Rom Upgrader to download and install the new cupcake radio. I installed that one 1st, installed fine.
I then uploaded the update.zip from Lucids post with 1.51 Tmobile build, USA. The update went through fine.
G1 reboots, Im happily surprised, my apps are still there! And work! (In otherwords my apps were still reading off the SD card and cache too I am assuming)
Now the glitch part. Anything requesting root access is glitching up on me, You know the screen that comes up and says "Grant root access" Well the top part shows "SU Request" but the screen is blank, cant pick anything, I can hit home and go back to the main page. Not sure what that is about, or if thats implying I need to do a wipe and start over or if there is something missing. But so far least things are still working and so. Just the SU glitch, cant use SU in terminal either since that page popping up will be blank. =/ Ideas anyone? Thanks.
This might be a nube question... but I couldn't find an answer after searching the forum.
I am (patiently) waiting for an OTA update to address lag, GPS, 2.2 etc, and was not going to worry about root before these things happen. But I DO want to do a full recovery/backup and if I understand it, to do that correctly (using Titanium or similar) I need root. So, I want to root, even though I prob won't do any custom roms before the OTA.
So, I am considering my options to root...
Question: Is there any reason not to put the micro-SD card into a laptop, copy update.zip onto it, and then put the micro-SD back into the phone and then move the file into the correct directory in the phone's internal RAM? I would use astro to move the file. Then boot into recovery and select update package...
Might this work for some update.zip files and not others? Would it matter which update.zip I used?
Just search the market for "Lag Fix". It has a one click root option, by far the easiest way to root.
sweet - rooted.
phone seems much more laggy now. will try the lag fix and see if that helps.
BUT first a Ti back up...
thanks for the pointer... kinda surprised that had been around for a while but had not come across that specific fix yet.
success
Thanks again for the pointer to that path to root AND lag fix.
Lag is... gone. GPS is... better than it has ever been (though that is not saying much). And apps are backed up.
LOVING the phone even more!
Hi all,
I downloaded the OTA update to my rooted DX. After reading about Verizon going after Wireless Tether users I've decided that I want to wait this out for now. Does anyone know the location and the name of the update files? Thanks in advance...
Fyi, I have got wireless tether to work successfully by toggling airplane mode. No tbh patch needed.

Thanks for the reply.
I keep getting reminders that the file has been D/L'd if I would like to update "now" or "later". The last time I choose "later" it said that it will remind me in twelve hours. I've decided to freeze the updater using Titanium Backup to buy me time. I wonder if "Factory Data Reset" will remove the D/L?
Trying to learn about SBF's, flashing, bootstraps etc. Stuff I never tried because I only used Z4root. If anyone can recommend any reading or particular videos to watch, it would be greatly appreciated. I did read one from this forum. Thanks all...
Delete a system app like city id. The update will fail
^
he's right. OTA updates check for the bloatware installed on the phone. If certain ones are missing, the update will refuse to install until you put em back
Really? I thought before the download is started that the phone is remotely checked for bloatware and that once the firmware is downloaded that it will update the phone regardless of any bloatware. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the advice....
It is, but it also needs the files to install. Without them, it can't install the update. You will get about 33% of the way, it will fail, and reboot
The OTA file is stored in the /cache directory. There are actually two files, a .zip file and a .crc file with the same name as the zip file. I think the .crc file is for the system to check file integrity of the zip file.
I used cache cleaner to wipe cache, but it wouldn't get rid of these two files. File managers like Astro, OI, and Estrongs didn't show these two files in /cache, but when I used Root Explorer I could see the files there and I deleted them. I don't know if they'll re-download. If they do, and I get the reminder pop-up message, then I'll just do a failed install (I used Titanium Backup to "freeze" CityID, Blockbuster, and Backup Assistant). Once the install has failed, it should stop popping up the reminder message.

I used TB to "freeze" the "Updater" and have not received any notifications of an update since: I am still on Froyo with no issues.
With regards to how to video for SBF here is a good one:
Some helpful info:
Good How to Guide
Thanks guys for your advice! I haven't received any further messages about updating since I froze the update apps.
Thanks Grillmaster for the tip about Root Explorer. I've used Astro and File Expert but Root Explorer seems to be the most popular. Now I know a reason why!
Thanks Ricky for the suggested video! I've D/L'd DX Bootstrap and when I think I know what I'm doing I'll try the latest rooted GB!
Take care and thanks again!
Oops! I meant GrillMouster!!! Oh, by the way, I just D/L'd Root Explorer and you're right! The other file managers just show a blank /cache directory but with R.E. I've found the update files I was looking to delete! Awesome!
Thanks again,
Frank

Can you SBF back to .340 after taking the OTA? I want to reinstall the rooted .596
With my tab I was nagged constantly about an ota. Deleting the files only means it will download again. Removing an app only meant the install failed. No matter what I kept being nagged. I had to do some build.prop edits to get rid of the notification completely.
Sounds like you use your data for more than just checking things here and there. Maybe you need a tether plan.
Install 2.3.3 and get a tether plan.

Read. The. Stickies. They answer all of your questions.
I lookex through them, but everything i saw was explaining how to sbf from froyo or from rooted roms, n im on stock gb 2.3 so i dont have bootstrap or anything installed n i wasent sure how to sbf back to stock froyo

You can still sbf back to froyo from OTA GB.
Ok, i dl'd that file to sbf back to 2.2 but can i just use astro n run it? Or do i have to do something else cuz im on 2.3?

Ok so this is my first post just wanna say hi to everyone.
Last night around 1:00 am i noticed my phone had some kind of prompt asking me to install gingerbread, the phone had already downloaded it.
I decided i wanted to stay on Froyo for several reasons, the biggest being that i like my phone the way it is and i don't wanna lose my root or my ability to tether.
That and i have put a lot of time and effort into getting my phone to look a certain way using go launcher ex and i just don't wanna change at this point in time.
Ok so i did a tiny bit of research and found a way to disable the blurupdater.apk by renaming it to blurupdater.apk to .bak which stops the update prompt.
I did this using super manager and i also noticed in my cache file a file named Blur_version.2.3.20.a955.verizon.en.Us.zip which is around 105.72 megs.
Is this the gingerbread update and can i delete it from the cache file using super manager?
If not where can i find the update file and how do i delete it as i do not want gingerbread and am perfectly happy with Froyo as it is now.
I also read somewhere online that doing a hard reset will take my device off the soak listings, what i'm wondering is does verizon plan to force the update to all devices at some point?
If so can i simply do a hard reset and get my device off the list.
Can i stop them from forcing me to upgrade to gingerbread if i don't want to, is really what i'm wondering.
Thank you in advance for any help you guys can give
B4 you delete it, can I have it? Please? I have seen in other forums mention that the soak has started coming through. I'm just not sure about the file name. 2.3.20 is Froyo.
I'm on the Leak from June and it was 4.5.153.A955....

He's not on the soak test, he thinks blur version 2.3.20 is gingerbread, its the newest version of blur for froyo. Gingerbread hasn't been officially released.
You should go ahead and update to the newest version of froyo, make sure to unfreeze everything first, afterwards all you have to do is root again via z4root and your good to go

No i am on the soak test i just renamed the updater and the update message says 4.5.601.en.US has been downloaded and is ready to install. Anyone know where can i find the downloaded file so i can delete it. I seriously do not wanna jump to gingerbread.
@d2user you can have it if i can find it and get it off my phone
I am not a soak tester(thus wanting the file) but am told it is just in /cache
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Ok well the only file of any size in my root cache folder is the one i mentioned above, im viewing the file with super manager, is it possible that super manager just isn't reading the file correctly?
When i renamed blur_updater.apk super just sees it as updater.apk?
So maybe its just not reading the file name correctly?
I dunno but its 105.72 megs.
Wish I could be more help. All I can say for sure is that my cache is empty except for 2 empty sub folders.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I got the update and let's just say it's got roots
Does wireless tether work on gingerbread and how did you root it. I used z4root to root froyo. It was pretty much childs play, Is there a one click root for gb. I wouldnt mind upgrading but dont wanna lose functionality. Im on verizon and lately they have been trying to stop tethering.
Update has been pushed to my device, all loaded up.
Downloading now, gonna see what it is and or does.
