I have rooted my new Droid X using z4root and then installed WifiTether. Started the WifiTether and allowed access to my iPad. All that worked fine, but the issue is the speed of the Wifi Tethered iPad. My phone, using the SpeedTest app runs at 1mg down and 700k up, but my iPad using the Wifi Tether only gets 1-5k down and 1-5k up. IT'S JUST STUPID SLOW.
This can't bet right, so does anyone have any idea why this would happen?
FYI: I have the latest Droid X OS since I just got the phone 3 days ago and the z4root perma-root worked without a hitch. When launching Wifi Tether the phone asked to approve connection to the iPad, which I did and it started to allow browser use, but once it got to around 25k, the download went to 0k and then briefly gave me 1k down every so often.
Last, I just rebooted and then started the wiFi Tether app again. I get an error during launch and the "Show Log" area says:
loading kernel module : FAILED
Activating Wifi Interface : DONE
Starting Hostapd... : DONE
Enabling NAT Rules : DONE
Enabling IP Forwarding : DONE
Enabling Access Control... : FAILED
Tethering now ruunning : DONE
Does anyone have any ideas what is going on?
Verizon now has the ability to see who is using rooted phones, and in their opinion stealing data through root tether apps, and they throttle your data connection down to unusable levels. This is the one thing i hate about greedy Verizon. T-mobile allows free wi-fi tethering, or at least they don't block it.
At least this is what i have heard reading on clockworkmods site.
Wow, that really sucks... it's the only reason I ended up rooting my phone to begin with.
I guess there is no other work around?
Heres a way to do it
go to this site: droidmodderx.wordpress.com/3ghotspot-patch-free-with-or-without-root/
If I do this, does that mean Verizon will be able to still see that I have activated and am using the 3G hotspot without paying for it? This is regardless if I do this with or without root.

Soon after I got my phone, I used the ##778 reprogramming trick to enable "free" usb tethering. (PDAnet would crash my Vista laptop every 10 minutes.)
After the 2.2 OTA, I've been using the same trick to enable "free" hotspot through my Inc. (No root necessary!) I was able to access email and surf the web and after 1.5 months, I never once saw the MBC feature added to my bill.
Until 3 days ago, everything was working great. I would turn on the hotspot, my laptop would connect to the network and I was able to access the web.
Since then, my Inc creates a network and my laptop connects to the network, but it never connects to the internet. (The little globe icon doesn't appear. If that makes sense...) I checked ##778 settings and everything is fine.
I'm running stock kernel and 2.2 OTA with LauncherPro. I have ~200 apps installed currently. BUT none of that should matter because it worked fine with all these apps before.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Would the app that works for rooted phones work for me? I've been trying to avoid rooting my phone because, I'll end up spending WAY TOO MUCH time playing with ROM's and such. (It's inevitable, but I'm holding out as long as I can. Until then, I'll continue to read this forum to stay current.)
Mine still works fine - Root it jackass (jk) your phone will literaly be 100 times better
My co-worker used to connect his BB to my network, but now it won't even connect. It detects the network with 4 bars, but he gets an error connecting. (Probably because it won't detect an internet connection.)
This is bothering me a lot. I have a feeling it could be a hardware issue.
I got a wireless router yesterday for my workplace now so I don't really need the feature anymore (it's so much faster than VZW's network!), but I'd like to able to use it in emergency situations when I can't find an open network on the road.

+1 Root. Bro it will honestly take you less than 10 minutes to root your device and install wireless tether and you'll be off and running. If your timid you don't have to do anything more than that. All you have to do to revert is flash the stock image from your sd card to unroot.
So I started having issues with my Evo4g (unlocked to work on nTelos), so I went back to my Milestone X (Droid X). I followed the procedures found here and elsewhere to root the OTA 2.3.5 update. All was well until I went to use Wireless Tether. Within 10 seconds of starting it, it says "3g data link lost" and disconnects any wifi clients.
I found a few different instructions, and installed the Droid X Bootstrap recovery, installed the TBH patch, and rebooted. The problem persists. I even tried the wifi tether beta that allows you to select the device type, but that doesn't help at all.
One thing to note is that no matter what wifi tethering app I use (Wireless Tether, Wifi Tether, Barnacle, OpenGarden), the built in hotspot program pops open and says "Tethering or Hotspot active"--then I get the "3g data link lost" My "3g" icon will then disappear and reappear at random, and while it's gone, the phone itself doesn't have a data connection. Once I close any tethering programs, the phone's data works again. The same thing happens when I try to use the built in hot spot program.
It seems as if enabling tethering kills the cellular data connection, and somehow resets it. I read somewhere about issues with this phone and wifi+3g working at the same time, but with wifi enabled, connected to an access point, I have cellular connectivity (since calls come through)
Any ideas?
Wireless Tether

Take out the space
Gives lots of options for 2.3.and above. It all starts with freezing the main 4 programs that records the tethering data. Read there and it will explane.
those four programs don't exist that I can find on the nTelos device. One strange thing though, I used AndSQLite per some of those instructions to browse the databases, and there are lots of things with vzw in their names (verizon wireless). I wonder if Motorola made a generic ROM, and this just doesn't have Verizon's bloat in it yet.
nTelos doesn't charge us for tethering, but they don't officially support it yet either, so they're no help.
What's the simplest way to go back to 2.2 ?
For an update if anybody runs across this, if I select "Routing Fix" in the Wifi Tether settings, it works.
you may contact nTelos to see if they can assist. Their toll free line is 18774683567.

Apparently this only works sometime. Sometimes the tethering works, sometimes it doesn't.

I'm an nTelos re-seller. They tell me that since it's "not officially supported" that they cannot help.
is there a way to go back to 2.2?

TTT. Really looking to get wifi tethering back.
As some of you may know yesterday i went through he!! getting my Razr M rooted. I did it. The reason for the root was the built in tether on the Droid Razr M doesn't work with my Droid tablets both running ICS. So I figured if I root and then get a tether from Google Play then it might work. Problem now is I've downloaded all of them seems like (accept FoxFi it sucks now because it makes you install a screen lock password that can never be removed.) I set these things up start the tether and no device can see them. My laptop, tablet destop all nothing. As if it weren't there. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong if anything. I've used wifi tether on my rooted Droid X and it worked great. Now not so much. There seems to be extra settings like select lan network. The choices are ip addresses. 192.168.1.0/24, 192.168.2.0/24, 192.168.3.0/24, 172.20.21.0/24, 172.20.22.0/24, 172.20.23.0/24, 10.10.1.0/24, 10.10.2.0/24, 10.10.3.0/24 what do they mean? Is this my roadblock? Frustrating as hell. Using 3rd party tethers for rooted devices has always been simple and effective. I used them on my Droid X because the built in version would drop out after 5-15 minutes and I'd have to turn it off and on to get it back. Now I just want to use my tablets. A USB tether would be fine with me if I could find one that worked on my tablet. I used to use PdaNet but it's bundled with FoxFi now. Suggestions?
Broke down installed Pdanet and Foxfi. Installed pdanet for tablets on tablet side. Made a connection to the phone via foxfi. The hope was foxfi would talk to the tablet where the stock tether wouldn't. No dice. Apparently the problem resides in the way to phone negotiates internet traffic. There's a connection there but no communicating is going on. I've spent too much time on this already. I can get us online through the phones via connectifyme installed on my wifes laptop. It seems a router between the phone and the tablet fixes the issue. Problem is there's no way to connect a router to a phone. While not perfect, it's better than nothing. It's just my wife likes being online during trips and that isn't possible now.
Hey all,
So I have UDP with Verizon. Got my phone the other day and activated it before I inserted my VZW sim card. Tethering worked fine until today (after Droid-Life posted about it), and now it will work for a few minutes and then I lose internet connectivity on both the phone and hotspot.
To get around this with my previous Moto X 2013, I used the wifi tethering apk from here: https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ and then only allow one device at a time to connect. This app doesn't seem to work with Android L (or I can't get the settings right).
Is there anything else I can try? Or is there any way to limit devices with the stock tethering?
(edit)
Other info:
Phone is unlocked.
TWRP installed (phone tethered fine after TWRP installed)
Phone is rooted (same as above)
I installed Xposed today, started having issues. Uninstalled Xposed, still have tethering issue.
(edit2)
Wife's phone, a rooted VZW Samsung GS4 is also being flaky with wifi tethering. I'm guessing that it isn't my device tonight...

I have a similar issue but not quite the same. I am also on UDP vzw and the behavior that I get is that the hotspot connection to the Internet is barely usable at all. Some pages load, sometimes but often they timeout. But with all of this the connectivity on the handset itself is unaffected. I'm going to try a usb tether on my Mac with the HoRNDIS package soon to see how the speeds compare. Maybe it's just the wifi tether and sub will be okay?
There have been some that are specifically noticing DNS issues. Maybe that's where the root of the problem is.

Ever since I found out that VZW allows you to add the tethering package to your UDP line and not mess anything up, I bought it and have experienced zero issues. Before that, every few days I would have some bad DNS issues where google would work, but nothing else would. Now my phone is my ISP and I've had no issues.
My (current) network setup: phone (wifi tether) -> bridge computer (internet sharing) -> router (Asus AC66U) -> wired/wireless network.
I haven't tried the bridge computer as an actual network bridge as that caused some flakiness before... but that was when I wasn't paying for tethering. Eventually I'd like to use my phone as a 4g modem that is directly hooked up to my router.
Ive been trying to use tethering to my laptop and its to the point of unusable, im getting 56k speedsi if that while a speed test from my phone im getting 15-30 down and 2-10 up.
I'm using wifi hotspot ive tried both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz. I have also tried the USB Tether but my windows 10 doesnt like it for some reason. Im on verizon with a shared Data plan that includes the Hotspot feature. anyone have any ideas
Thanks
No idea, but I've tethered to a Windows 7 laptop. Performance was good, so I never bothered to check the speed.

I am having same issue. I use T-mobile and my OnePlusOne never had this issue. I would go to gym and just turn on my hotspot and watch Netflix without issue in the past. With the MXPE, it's like being on 56k modem. Anyone else having this issue?
I tether almost everyday due to terrible speeds at work. I'm on Verizon unlimited and I do not experience any speed issues. I unlocked but I made no changes for tether as that worked out of the box
I tried Bluetooth tethering which works fine without any issue so it's not exactly a carrier issue. I also verify with t-mobile that they didn't turn of my hotspot feature by accident.
I have the same issue on TMO US. With my Nexus 5, I had fast, dependable tethering. Now with the MXPE my tethering is painfully slow and flaky. Not good at all when on the road.
I'm having the same issue. I just upgraded from a Droid MAXX that had fantastic tethering speeds, and now on my new MXPE it's like being on dialup. Has anyone come up with a solution? I've been loving the phone so far, but tethering is too important to me and I won't be able to keep the phone if I can't figure it out.
I've had this happen twice. A reboot fixed it both times.
I've had this happen more than twice... Hoping the devs can come up with a fix

I'm on VZW ULDP and mine can be painfully slow at times as others have indicated. Usually a reboot will rectify it. But that's not really convenient. I have it set up to start tether automatically when I start my car (bluetooth connection activated via tasker) so I can automatically get traffic to work or home on my z ultra.

I had my first tethering session yesterday. I am on Verizon. A customer I was meeting with needed email access on his Surface Pro and there was no free WiFi where we met. I went in and setup a portable WiFi hotspot. We were both quite impressed with the speed. Keep in mind, this is the only time I have tried it but there were no issues.
hello i just got my moto x pure and i was trying to tether everything seems to be ok until i try use internet in my macbook and is not trasmitting data, same thing happened with nexus 6 i found that when lte it stops transfering data, this is so stupid this is an unlocked phone and it wont let me tether?????? wtf........im using simple mobile unlimited 4g LTE ,i was using an Asus ZenFone 2 and tether without issues, thanks.
This happens almost every time I use the hotspot. Rebooting usually fixes it - temporarily. I'm really hoping that marshmallow has better hotspot performance on the MXP
I get this issue... It's not exactly slow speeds, more like a spotty connection. I use Remote Desktop to do my work, which should still technically run smoothly (albeit slowly) on a 56k connection. I am connecting to a Windows NT server, so I am only using 16-bit graphics quality to reduce the strain on my bandwidth. We didn't even have anything that much faster than T1 at that time, so I can't imagine a Windows NT server running slowly on a modem connection. I noticed a couple things that were strange, so I think there may be settings on my phone causing it but I cannot be sure.
The connection fast when I test the tethering at home, but when I am out the connection constantly drops. I cannot even get a stable connection to my server to do any work. This is not when I am in the car moving from cell tower to cell tower, this is if I am at a place without WiFi, such as my dentist's office.
Chrome gets stuck at "Resolving host..." when trying to visit any websites. This would lead me to believe it is a DNS error, however this does not explain the connection instability with Remote Desktop, and using the address's IP address does not seem to fix this, strangely enough.
I am on a VZW grandfathered unlimited plan, using the TruPure ROM. I did not want to move away from stock, but I did it in an attempt to fix my tethering issues. So far nothing has worked.
