Just got the Nexus S yesterday. I am rooted at this point, but I am waiting to read a little more on which Rom and Kernel is best. Any tips are appreciated. I am looking for longer battery life, and a stable Rom.
Any other quick tips are also appreciated.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955719 check this thread out. I havn't installed any custom ROMS yet. Sticking to stock while I try different kernals.

Hi all. I am a proud owner of a 32gb wifi Nexus 7. While not new to Android, this is my 1st tablet. Love the size, weight and most of all...is android!
My question is, what combination of ROM with kernel would be best? I know there are a lot of things to consider, but I am looking for opinions only. Without talking down certain ROMs and/or kernels, we can share here opinions based on stability, customization and smoothness! I already encounter an issue when I rooted my 2 days brand new N7 rooting it with the Tool kit. Rooted it fast and easy (successfully), but installed TWRP. Me knowing no better, I love and I'm used to CWM, so I installed ROM Manager and CWM. Long story short, when I went to flash one ROM in particular, in recovery, when I formated system, data reset, wiped cache & dalvik, it wiped my sdcard clean. I mean, thats how I flash my Note 2 for a clean install and never had an issue like that. Then, when I tried to get into recovery via fastboot, I couldn't. It was like CWM wasn't there.
Thanks to the Tool Kit, I was able to un root and go back to stock....then rooted again (with TWRP) and finally flashed CM-10 stable. Also flashed faux's 4.1.2 kernel @ 1600. I like what I have so far, but I would like something more. I got the stable CM-10 from the actual CM thread so the ROM is pretty much untouched.
Can anybody please share what ROM and kernel I should try for a bit of stability, power and smothness at the same time? Any inputs and/or advice, will be greatly appreciated!
Try Paranoidandroid as a ROM. And i think the kernel that comes with it is the smoothest i have used with it.

Hi, Wally72...
I don't know if this question can be answered objectively... it all hinges on how you intend to use the device, day to day. If your going to be playing high-octane video games, then a kernel that supports overclocking would be advised... but that will come at a battery life cost. More CPU cycles = battery drain.
For myself, I am currently running PaulOBriens MoDaCo custom ROM (can't post links yet, but Google MoDaCo Nexus7, and you should find it)...
The standard MoDaCo ROM for the N7 doesn't go too far off stock... it just adds some really nice features... AOSP browser (better than Chrome IMHO), expanded powerdown menu, Adobe Flash Player in /system (although Adobe no longer support it, it's still useful to have).
Paul has recently ventured into CyanogenMod territory with CM10.1 unofficial nightlies... which he has stated will be released every Friday.
And this is what I'm running now - MoDaCo CyanogenMod Custom ROM r3 - and in conjunction with Franco's r39 kernel, it's incredibly smooth... and very respectible battery performance as well.
Hope this is of some use...
Rgrds,
Ged.

I just ordered a Nexus 10 last week and I'm waiting on it which should be here this afternoon.
I looked through the forums but the threads I found were outdated.
I am looking to root it and install a custom ROM but I don't know which ROMs are current.
I'd be very grateful if some you guys could list some ROMs that are current and anything I should install on the N10. (Essential apps, accessories etc.)
Thanks a lot
Also, am I supposed to charge the thing fully first before I turn it on?

Starting off, Yes you should charge the device fully before doing anything with it as much as we all can't wait to start playing with our gadgets as soon as they arrive it is always best to ensure they have a full charge first especially if you plan on rooting it and flashing ROM's as the last thing you would want is for the device to run out of charge in the middle of flashing a ROM or a root procedure. For rooting the Nexus 10 I would recommend taking a look at zedomax's video guide on how to unlock the bootloader, gain root access, and more. You could also take a look at mskip's Nexus 10 Toolkit or WugFresh's Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit the toolkit will unlock the bootloader of your Nexus 10, root the device, install a custom recovery, and many other things simply and easily. For a look at which custom ROM's are current take a look at philos64's Index of Custom ROM's, Kernels, and more it includes everything from AOSP, to Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Paranoid Android, and lots more. A great list of essential Nexus 10 apps can be found here by xperiax10.awesome. As far as accessories go I would at least recommend some kind of case to protect your tablet, I use a Blurex Ultra Slim Case for Google Nexus 10 and really like it.
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to me!
I'm just done rooting and I'm going to try to install the roms.
Thanks again!

If you were wanting some suggestions then I'm running mrRobinson's AOKP ROM and it is easily the most customisable and personalised ROM I've ever seen, if that's what you're looking for. I'm also running the KTManta kernel, which has tonnes of options and the guys on the thread offer preset layouts that give you great battery life, as well as super smooth running. These both have threads on XDA so just search them if you decide they're worth it

I've been having this problem for a couple weeks now. There hasn't seemed to been any pattern, my nexus 4 decides to reboot and then the battery usually goes down to 0. I am on PA now but before it was stock everything. I restored but that didn't help, then a fried suggested a new kernel so I rooted and flash Franco. However nothing had helped so far. Any ideas? I'm not going to go into specifics about the exact versions because it'll be stated below. So I just need some suggestions, this appeared a couple weeks after I was prompted to update to 4.3. Weirdly I was on 4.3 already but just went through with the update and 2 weeks after I have this. I was thinking of possibly flashing a 4.2.2 based ROM and an older version of the Franco kernel. Will this help? Or is a new battery all together I more logical way to go. Do y'all think it's a software or hardware issue. If more info is needed I'll be happy to reply, thank you  Also I know this has been posted before but I couldn't find an actual solution... So hopefully this isn't taken off... Thanks Everyone.

Most probably its a Software porblem.
My suggestion is you should try another rom as many PAusers have some or the other issue with the rom or the kernel they use with it.
GO for Slimbean heck lot of features and try any JWR kernel. Iwould go with franco or hellcore test5JWR.
Press thanks if I helped you. :good:
P.S : Please do a clean install, factory reset before flashing Slim
I'll try that, thanks.

As I know Chrome beta had this issue...so if you got it install just remove it
Ok, so its been a couple years since I last loaded a rom on my nexus 10. I'm wanting to get it up to latest version of a ROM. I assume I need to update TWRP (assuming that's what I have on there)? Is there anything I need to do? I'm charging it now, when it's charged I'll power it up and see what exactly is on there.
Also, I know ROM discussions are typically frowned upon, but I was just wondering which roms people are preferring these days? I was thinking to load chroma or Lollipopalooza...
thanks

I have a TMO Galaxy Note 3, Rooted with CF Using TWRP running Version 5.0. Im looking to installing a custom Rom but just kinda overwhelmed with bootloaders on or off ,Kernals and so on. I was just wondering if someone could give me some advice to a Rom that would be a little less complicated until i figure everything else out. Thanks~!

Just head over to android development section and download any rom of your choice. You mentioned your phone is 5.0/lollipop so no need to think about bootloader. While kernel is already in the rom so you're good to go. Just follow instructions in the thread to the letters. Read a few pages of the thread so you could get some info on whether you t-mo is supported or not or for any other issues may have related to the rom.

I would recommend Darklord Note 5 Rom, there is an update coming in the next day or two and I would download that update. It is fast and has a pretty good battery life for me. Plus it doesn't have all the random mods that other developers put on their roms. So you can just put the mods that you need yourself.
P.S. Make a backup of everything incase you need to revert back for any reason. Also, there is no way as of now to have NFC working on a custom rom for Note 3 TMO/ canada.
for me try arya mod or the darklord n5 rom
