Around 24 hours after upgrading my Samsung Focus (on Rogers) to Nodo, the phone started having a weird notification bug... I think it may be a hardware issue unrelated to NoDo but thought I'd post here in case any one else is seeing this or in case anyone has ideas on how to test/fix it.
Effectively the screen won't stay off and the phone keeps making a notification sound. If you push the screen off button within a second or two it re-lights and makes a "de-de-de" sound (and keeps repeating that sound randomly - anywhere from every half second to every few seconds...). This sound is exactly the same sound as when you plug the phone into the charger. I think the phone must somehow be triggering a charger notification for some unknown reason (note: the battery doesn't show changing nor does it drop down when it makes the alert sound).
What I've tried so far to debug this:
- Removed Battery, restarted phone
- Turned on Airplane mode incase there was some push notification causing it
- Tried fully charging phone (notification started happening when battery was around 1/3rd charged but still happens fully changed)
- Did a hard-reset - still get the sound with no applications installed/setup
- Checked the battery diagnosis menu (doesn't show anything unusual)
Only other step I can think of would be to do a restore from Zune... suspect this won't change a thing though. The phone had worked flawlessly for 4 months and this error started 1 day after installing NoDo - suspect that is just a coincidence though...
For some reason the alert seems to stop for a while (e.g. 5 to 10 minutes) and then restart. I can put the phone in vibrate mode to make it bearable, but battery life is getting drained...
Any one else see this before or having any ideas? Guessing the phone needs repair but thought I'd check.
Battery Icon
Yes, I have seen it. My Focus did the same thing, but I believe it may have been a battery icon notification. It has something to do with the mini USB port that is used for connecting to the PC. AT&T told me it is a known problem on Samsung phones but was supposed to be fixed in the update. Mine has stopped doing this but I know it can reoccur at anytime. I am waiting for the AT&T US update to see what happens. Try attaching to your PC, let Zune launch, turn off Zune, turn off your phone screen, disconnect your phone. You may have to do this a couple of times. For me, it stopped doing this whenever the plug was inserted in the phone USB port.
Did you happen to get the firmware update package that should be available after installing the March 2011 update?

A firmware update? where?
I didnt get this update. Any rogers users that did? I unbranded nodo then rebranded and nodo again and nothing....
Update
When I was troubleshooting with the AT&T Tech Support Center for devices I was told it would be in the upcoming AT&T update for the Samsung. I had the impression it was the NoDo release specifically for the Samsung. You need to ask this question of Samsung users who got the NoDo release, more importantly, those users who may have had this problem.
Thanks for the post James - good to know I'm not the only one! For me this only started after installing NoDo. I think your PC USB connection might be right/related as shortly before it happened, I had run the windows update checker again to see if there was a firmware update with the phone connected to Zune... (nodo had run fine for 24 hours before - there wasn't a firmware update so I'd just disconnected). Think the problem happened very shortly after that.
Still very odd that removing the battery and even doing a factory reset didn't fix it!
I have a call in to Rogers now to see if they'll swap the phone... may just be a configuation bug but travelling on business and figured if a hard reset didn't fix there must be something off in the hardware - now you have me wondering though! (the bug had stopped for a bit today... that said the notifications where somewhat intermittent).

This does not help all the time, but when it starts that crazy "boinging" sound and the battery icon flashes, plug the USB port into ANYTHING. Charger, PC anything. It will always stop when plugged in, but sometimes, after removing the USB plug, it will remain "fixed" for a while.
My Experience
A couple of weeks ago, this started on night and continued off and on thru the next day so I ran out of battery before I got home.
About a week later, it happen again.
When it happened the third time, I called AT&T Warranty Support. After a hard reset, the battery icon showed I was charging when I wasn't plugged in. They sent me a new phone, which is working fine, so far...
I'm sorry, I know this is an older thread. I had this problem pre-NoDo and it is still persisting after NoDo. Has anyone found any sort of fix, or even just a way to turn off the battery notification? The only thing I've seen is to just plug/re-plug it in, try cleaning the port, and making sure the prongs aren't bent. I had figured NoDo would fix it, but no such luck. Is this more of a hardware issue or a software issue? Thanks for any info.
Hi Kassi - I was fortunate enough to get my phone replaced under warranty (hasn't happened since). My thoughts are this is a hardware issue. Out of curiosity, do you (or the few others who had this issue), use any after market chargers (any cables that didn't come with the phone)?
I had a Monoprice Micro USB cable and wondering if it caused damage to the phone's connector port. The flat side of the cable's plug has bumps on it that are larger than the OEM cable and it makes a tight fit in the focus. I wonder if that somehow bent the port... what makes me suspect this is the problem started shortly after upgrading to NoDo and I'd used that cable for the upgrade.... (thinking it might have even started immediately after checking for a firmware upgrade using that cable...)
While it is handy to have extra cables I won't be using those again!
I have the same problem on my Samsung Omnia 7. Just suddently started happening when I didn't use the phone (many weeks after getting NoDo). Haven't found any fix for this (I'm in the US with a European phone, so a warranty replacement is a little bit tricky...)

Firstly,i would like to apologise for making another thread with the same topic if there's any.I've searched the forums and most of the threads seem to be 'Dead'.
Last week,my phone had something strange going on.When it's at sleep mode,it automatically lights up.I picked it up and i see this thing called the 'Navi-Panel'.The screen was in landscape mode. The only thing that i can access was the phone.I managed to exit the Navi-Panel through the task manager but the problem's still there,my phone and my SMS are in landscape. Also, the phone calls that i make and received are always on loudspeaker mode.I also cannot connect the phone to the computer via the USB. I've tried various ways to fix the phone such as hard reset and rom flashing but it's still the same.I'm currently on the Stock rom version 1.66.707.1(76641) WWE. Can someone post a solution for my problems?
It happened to me twice when a tiny drop of water dropped on the micro usb slot, creating a temporary short circuit.
Make sure the slot is clean, (no conductor material inside).
It may be a small chance, but it is still a chance...
I have the same problem
My phone got wet last night due to rain. And the Navi panel kept coming up. So I set the option for Navi panel not to have an automatic launch. Thats fine now, but I got another problem to sort through. When ever I pick up a call the speaker is automatically turned ON. Its embarrassing now. I am just hoping its temporary..
If anyone has an idea on how to turn off the automatic speaker on call pick up, pls let me know.. Thanks in advance.
Whats more is: I cant connect to the Activesync now. The phone is charging well though.
I can probably live with that since I can connect through Blue Tooth. Hoever, if someone has any idea on how to turn off the "Auto external Speaker mode", pls let me know .. any registry key ... or any other means.
Thanks in advance.
This happened to me a few months back now on a wet evening, assuming the phone must have got wet through my pocket. Tried everything to fix it, left it to dry out for 24 hours near radiator with the battery out to no avail. But then flashed a new ROM and it started working. (Had to flash the same ROM three times till it started working. Every ROM since has been fine)
Hope this helps.
Thanks .. That gives me a hope. Could you pls tell me what ROM you flashed.. may be its something to do with that specific ROM..
Activesync died...
Thanks all of you who contributed to the forum. My HD2's activesync stopped working yesterday... and main challenge was to put shipped ROM and send it to the repair...
There is only one thing that I could not explain... When OS is up and running (regardless whether it is cooked or shipped) there is no active sync can be established (only charge function is working). However, when phone is in boot loader (RGB screen) I could connect it thru USB and install ROM from computer...

Thanks for trying to help XAH, but this was the first thing in my troubleshooting process. Usually it helps when you plug in the phone, computer acknowledges it, but pop in warning sign that USB device is not recognized. In my case there was no reaction (on multiple computers) - like nothing is plugged in... Will see what repairer says... I'll post an update as soon as I'll hear from them.
got my HD2 from repair centre
I've got my HD2 back from repair centre... and it works fine... most bizzar part is paper say that nothing was done...
a friend of me hat this problem some time ago. it disappeared after about 1 or 2 weeks iirc.
Same problem for me, but i've changed 5 diferent rom's and nothing...i will try the airdryer now
Hi all.
My Focus is giving me some trouble. It was working just fine (still no NoDo, I'm one of those with rev 1.4 that are not getting the update for some reason), and there were no problems at all. Purchased the phone early March. Then a couple of days ago it started constantly beeping when I connect it to the computer/wall charger. You know the sound the phone makes when connected to USB? It's making that same noise now, but just constantly. As in, if I plug it into the USB and leave it for half an hour, it will constantly beep for half an hour.
Naturally, Zune isn't even recognizing it because it think the phone keeps getting plugged/unplugged all the time. I did some searching but didn't really find anything worthwhile. Anyone else having the same issue, and if so, any remedies?
Thanks!
Happens with the charger?
What's about another usb cable?
Seems like a hardware problem.
Yep, happens with the charger and various USB cables/ports. Seems like a hardware problem to me too. I purchased this from AT&T without commitment, will they replace the phone or do I have to go through Samsung? Thanks!
You have 1-year warranty with AT&T but you will only get a refurb replacement though. They are quite a few ppl had this same problem. One even got his phone fried (there is a thread here). Some posts suggest that AT&T will ask you wait for NoDo because it is a WP7 issue (BS from AT&T)
Opposite
My Focus was just the opposite. The only time it DID NOT beep was when the USB cable was plugged into the phone. It gradually stopped doing it but NoDo seems to have resolved it for good. I caution that I cannot be certain that NoDo fixed it. My feeling was always that it was USB connector related, whether hardware or software, I don't know. ATT insisted that NoDo would fix it.
Thanks a lot guys. My Focus stopped beeping and is connecting correctly now; I didn't change anything, it just happened. Hopefully this doesn't happen again.
Thanks again!
Ok so maybe I spoke too soon. Yesterday I was telling my brother that the Note is the most reliable phone I've ever owned.....then....
I started having issues with charging. My Note would not charge, then it would change after several resets. It would charge, then stop, then start again etc etc....making a lot of beeping noises.
Now, it seems to be charging, but Voice talk keeps loading, and I've turned off the home key activation option. I also get the notification icon saying to disable car mode.
I really hope someone can help, thanks in advance.
kris
Great, now it's not charging, again!
Actually when I get the notification issue from Voice talk, the battery starts charging for a second until the notification disappears and stops charging....
Now factory reset my phone again and charging worked while restarting and restoring but when loaded the voice talk app keeps coming up and going off, so I have a black flashing screen constantly....gonna try restarting/reset without restoring...
Hi leicashot, this shouldn't happen. Which firmware version are you currently running? I recommend installing the latest LB1 stock, unless you have AT&T Note.
Some users have reported similar symptoms when there was dust in the mini usb port. Try cleaning the device, and if all else fails, you should send it back to Samsung for repair.

I'm using the latest 2.6.35.7. Any idea how to try clean the port? Definitely seems like something is wrong with the port....
No charging issues for me but my Note started doing the driving mode thing at about 3am today and has been doing it on and off all day!
Exceedingly annoying!
are you trying to charge from a PC or a wall outlet?
I usually charge via mains but it wasn't charging or even plugged in at the time this started happening. It was just sitting on the table by my bed. I even powered it off but it switched itself back on!
Here is how to fix it.
Take out the battery and take a plastic edge like credit card or even a regular tiny small screwdriver and push the pins (strip) inside the phone. I mean, to take the screw driver and push in the pins back inside the phone, in inside the usb charging port. your problem will disappear. make sure your plastic flexible after-market phone cover has a big enough hole at the bottom to allow you to connect a usb cable easily to the phone, or else, cut open a bigger hole on the cover.
Good luck
so here it is again: you have to push in the usb port pins back inside the phone, straight in without bending them. you can also buy a usb charging port from ebay for 22 bucks and change it yourself in 10 minutes. its a hardware problem so stop resetting your phone.
Nop bro i dont think so, cuz it happened same with me sometime after i bought galaxy note same thing happened with me too. I mean exactly same. So before i didnt knew rooting and flashin roms and all so i gave to service centre and they put newer version of ron in it and my problem was fixed after that.

Indeed. I remain convinced this is not hardware and is software related. The main reason for my thoughts there are that as well as the driving mode thing it seems that some piece of software is trying to load up as it asks me if I want to run whatever it is in either Clock or TuneIn Radio. Bizarre. Also, the first time it happened it was bang on 3am. Everytime I turned the phone off it would come back on exactly two minutes later.
The second night it started doing it bang on 1am.
I'm waiting to see what time it starts tonight.
It doesn't (so far) do it at all during the day.
Going to give it a couple of days to see what happens then go figure out how to go back to a factory ROM rather than the the Rocket 22 I have on here now.

I've been having the same problem for a few days now.
I've just pushed the pins in with the corner of my charging cables connector and the problem stopped.
There was also a notification that flashed up saying something like: USB connector or device removed.
Voice talk is still managing to launch itself, even after pushing the pins in. I'm on stock LB2 so maybe I've finally found a reason to flash a GB rom?
Happened to me yesterday. Got a toothbrush and cleaned usb port on phone. Now seems ok

this method solve my problem.
So I just got a dell venue pro a few weeks ago from a friend, it was basically new, and i finally got it carrier unlocked, but i CANNOT get it to update from 7.0.7403.0
everything seems to work fine, i downloaded the most recent zune software, i connect the phone and it has me rename it, everything works fine at this point (sync and connection are OK), the software recognizes there is an update, so i hit "update now" and it begins to update.
from this point it will stop at random spots, usually at step 6/10 "resetting phone" is where it quits most, usually getting stuck on the dell logo, but sometimes at 15% or 20%...either way it will freeze the zune software or freeze the DVP itself and i'll have to remove the battery to get it to work again...
anyway, if anyone knows how to fix whatever is wrong with it, i really want to get it updated.
I've heard of weird problems like this. People having to try the update multiple times before it will be successful. One person said he had to try using a Windows Vista PC before it worked. If you have another machine, even if it's also Windows 7, try that next. Also make sure you are using a high quality USB cable of appropriate length.
I just tried a few different USB cables, the furthest point i get to now is step 6 of 9 "restarting your phone" and the phone freezes at DELL logo. Has done that 3 times now...
this is a pretty poor first experience with Windows phone
yessssssss victory.
for anyone having any similar problems i tried like 3 USB cables since i dont have the original Dell cable (dont know if that has anything to do with it really) and 3 different computers too, finally got an XP machine to do it.
my phone froze during my first attempt, so i pulled battery and did it again. phone was backing up and "resetting"
but it never reset, it just went to dell logo and froze.
i was pissed so i just pulled battery and made it update the exact same setup again
for some reason this time it did the entire update until the final 9/10 reset, which it froze at too.
however this time when i disconnected the phone to pull the battery the zune software didnt throw an error or even look like it knew the phone was disconnected.
so i pulled battery and held down Pwr Vol Camera to put it in that software mode and plugged it back in, it acted as if it had successfully reset and finished the update...Finally, this was way more trouble than its worth IMO.
hopefully anyone that has the same issue will get some satisfaction from knowing it can be overcome.
+ im still getting random resets when using Wifi and the market, so im going to swap my 8 gig card for a 32 and see if that can be cleared up too.
+lol, 32 gig card swap is a breeze and ive had no issues yet. sweet.
Make sure to get all of the WP and firmware updates so you won't have the wifi bug. I think the larger SD card isn't a permanent fix but it's fixed with a later update. This update is worth the trouble
If you feel adventurous, you can force an update to 8107 too

You know I see this phone such a fine piece of hardware and when I read about problems people have or get into with this phone... it really disappoints me. I thank god my DVP works perfectly fine since day one. The phone is also updated to the latest and I got tmobile service on it. Everything works fine. I hope I don't ever run into any problems. You guys know whats up in making the custom roms? Man I want to post some info in the other developer thread but I am not allowed yet until I get 10 posts. I am helping currently a reseller on ebay with some DVP he has to fix and probably can provide technical information if needed.
Hello guys,
I have a very strange but really bad problem: my omnia7 can't stay in standby.
When I press the power button, to turn off the screen and go in standby (so not the full turn off), my Omni7 wakes up alone, going on the unlock screen. In the same time, the phone rings with the ring that is played when you connect the phone for charging.
I've tried reboot, reset, hardreset, removing the sim-card, turning on/off "battery saver options" ... still that issue :crying:
Anyone has an idea?
I've flashed with a cooked rom (xda-devs Omnia7 Tango V4.0)
my current config :
OS version : 7.10.8779.8
hard version : 3.1.0.4
soft radio version : 2424.11.7.2
hard radio version : 0.0.0.800
loader version : 4.10.1.9
SOC version : 0.36.2.0
Thanks to any ideas, because that problem is killing me
my phone started doing this late last night too! i thorght it was because rain had gone into the power socket but if others are having same problem at the same time maybe not?
has your phone been exposed to water at all recently? is your phone jailbroken? cant realy think of other reasons
the problem stops when the phone is plugged in. is there anything that can trick the phone to thinking it is on charge? I have wphtweaks installed but the options there are not able to stop it
Hi,
I can't remember if my phone has been wet :/ I take care, so my phone never received water. But when I'm outside, under the rain, it's possible.
Today it was better, just a few times my phone wakes up alone.
I'll give you feedback in the next days. Let me know about yours
I managed to trick my phone into silence a few times earlier but it was difficult and then only lasted 5-10 minutes.
if yours didnt get wet it seems unlikely to do with water but I left mine ontop of the aga after removing the battery and over a relativly cool part. A few hours later and it seems to be working fine now.
I will report back if the issue arises again.
EDIT: Ahhhh!! STOP THE RINGING!!! started again this morning
Mine too !
This morning ... the ringing awakening problem !!!!!
But it was better this afternoon.
Really I don't know what happens.
Are we only two persons in the xda world with this problem????
this is realy weird now! mine was doing it in the morning but since about 12pm - 1pm it has been fine! I feel like its something to do with an installed homebrew app maybe.
I also have a custom rom but mine was flashed a long time ago and much older than yours. not sure which version
EDIT (1:10pm GMT): no problems since yesterday
EDIT2 (1:30pm GMT): again i spoke too soon!
Did you guys get this problem sorted out? Had the same problem recently and tried all the suggestions in other threads (bend USB pin, Reset/Restore Device etc) but nothing fixed it, so after being woken at 3am by constant charging tone, took to T-Mobile shop. They said it was a software problem. I said I'd tried all that and the most likely cause I'd seen on the internet was a duff USB port.
Anyway, T-Mobile sent it off for repair and 7 days later - returned and fixed. The repair sheet said software upgrade, but the phone had been reset to bog standard Phone 7, so unlikely. The T-Mobile repair tracking site (excellent) which shows blow-by-blow trace of what and where, showed initial software upgrade/no fix but I used their "contact us" facility to suggest a USB problem and by magic the repair tracking log showed a replacement USB port.
BTW - had to resort to an iphone and HTC android while Omnia was off for repair. Now I know why I like Phone 7 and can't wait for 8. The iphone GUI is so last decade and Android GUI is really just a copy of Windows 6.5 with XDA developers' tweaks isn't it.
Hi Wuzzok,
what do you mean by "bend USB pin" ?
Anyway, it seems like it's finished for me. I didn't get tht strange bug (soft/hard bug???) for a very long time. I just hope it's really over !
Same problem
Hi Folks,
I have the same problem, too. Yesterday afternoon on my way home the phone started ringing with the USB plug sound and always started up itself from standby mode.
As I have a custom ROM (mi7ROM) I first thought it could be a problem with the ROM - although I could not really believe it since it was running stable for months now. I flashed it again and nothing changed - still ringing and starting up itself
I managed to get rid of the sound by deleting the entry in the registry key "Local Machine\Current User\ControlPanel\Sounds\BatteryCharging\Sound" but that does not solve the real problem.
After reading here and in some other WP7 blogs I am sure that this is a hardware problem with the USB plug unit. As my phone is just 11 months old I opened an online ticket at "SAMSUNG online repair service" who promise to answer in the next 24 hours. So I just have to wait and see...

Samsung sent me an offer to send the phone in for repair - but what should I say, the problem solved itself. For two days now the phone works normal again. So I had to cancel the service call .
mine hasnt done it in a long time either. looks like its just a temporary thing. I wonder what caused it! For me it started after I was using my phone in the rain and the usb slide was open so thats my suspect.
You may be right. Mine is "quiet" now, since a long time. Water may be the cause.
Update
Hi folks,
mine is mostly quiet again, too. Only few incidents "happen" but they do not last very long - only a few minutes. It's somehow spooky but I do not want to send it in to Samsung now when the error it not constantly reproducible.
I agree with you that there might be a correlation with humidity although I am sure that it did never get wet and I almost always keep the USB-shutter closed. Who knows ...
Sent it in
Finally I sent it in for repair today. It started ringing permananently two days ago...
Now I have to wait and see.
Final state
Okay, I received it back... and it works.
First they did nod find and could not reproduce the failure and wanted to send it back - only with a new flashed image - but fortunately the technician called me and I could describe the problem again. After waiting a few hours, the fault appeared again and they decided to change the mainboard.
I hope, that's all
Hello,
Me too it makes me after my omnia 7 is dropped in water, but problem solved.
Me too

The T-Mobile repair tracking site (excellent) which shows blow-by-blow trace of what and where, showed initial software upgrade/no fix but I used their "contact us" facility to suggest a USB problem and by magic the repair tracking log showed a replacement USB port.
BTW - had to resort to an iphone and HTC android while Omnia was off for repair. Now I know why I like Phone 7 and can't wait for 8. The iphone GUI is so last decade and Android GUI is really just a copy of Windows 6.5 with XDA developers' tweaks isn't it.
