I wanted to update to CM7, once it rebooted into recovery mode it gives me an error. I got the official Sprint update and the same thing happens. Once it verifies the file, something happened and it says there was an error and does not update. I did a factory reset on the phone, got the official sprint update and the same thing happened. The error is always "signature verification failed" on both roms.
What can I do?
Thanks.
When flashing a rom, are you selecting 'install from SD" then find where you saved the zip, etc?
It sounds like you're trying it thru the update.zip option (don't do that). Also, when you reboot into recovery, you should be seeing orange type clockwork 3.0.0.6 (not blue or green).
Ask if you have any other questions.

Are you using cwm 3?
Thanks for the replies guys.
I am using clockword mod 3, with their option on updates.
I don't know how to do the "update from sd", haven't seen that. I'm not sure if I am seeing the orange you mention...I just go to restart in recovery mod from CM3.

If you don't see orange text you're not on CWM3, you are either on CWM 2.5 or stock recovery and neither of those would be used for what you want to do.
Ya, check out the development section on getting the latest clockwork, if you don't have it already. And just in case, first, try powering off your phone, then hold camera button, volume down and power (after device is completely shut off). If you don't see orange text, you should update to the latest clockwork.

I turned off the phone, turned it on with the vol down/camera button and it automatically booted on CM recovery 3.0.0.5. Doing a rom backup. Then I see the orange text with several options but I can't pick any of them...I'm hitting the "home" button but nothing.
The phonr wont respond...I can toggle between the options but thats it.

And now the phone is stuck in the SAMSUNG screen...
Bricked...tried factory reset and nothing. Tried restore through CWM and nothing...
If you are able to get into CWM or download mode then your phone is not bricked. It sounds like you will have to use ODIN to restore your phone back to stock.

ClockworkMod 3 automatically converts your phone's filesystem from RFS to EXT4. You need a ROM that supports EXT4 or else it won't boot.
You wanted CM7 so go ahead and flash that if it's on the sd card. If you don't have it on the card it's easy to fix. Just turn off your phone and plug your memory card into a computer and copy a ROM that supports CWM3.
Once you flash a ROM your phone should boot normally.
Bro, when u boot into clockwork (orange) are u opening the slider and using the arrows and enter key. ? You shouldn't be using the home key.
Don't be so quick to "I'm bricked" .. cuz that's rarely the case. And annoying when ppl are trying to help.

K, thx for being patient. I did Odin and its again working.
Now the phone updated to 2.2.1
For future reference, can this Odin method be used o update to a non official rom (like CM7)?
Thanks for all the help.
I wouldn't rely odin for that, and as far as I know, no. For frame of reference, I've probably flashed epic roms over 100 times, and have only odin'd 5-- Used mostly to return to stock/update a modem. So, odining probably wasn't necessary for you. Do what arashed says a few posts up.
I'm using SRF 1.1.0/Twilight Zone and its amazing. Battery lasts a lot longer too.
Thanks again.

Ok, I have been thrown for a loop and need some help....
I had a Sprint Hero Rooted on 2.1 the .5 sprint update
Tried to run the new update but it kept getting corrupt.
Did a Nandroid backup
So I reverted back to the .5 RUU
Then it wanted me to update to the old .6 update, so I did
Hoping then I would upgrade to the new .6 but it was not able to find a new update?
Wanted to restore my nandroid update.
When I try to boot into the recovery mode I get a picture of a phone with a red Explanation mark in a triangle.
There is a bunch of people on the net that say they have seen or gotten it, but no one says how to get rid of it? So I can not get in to recovery mode at all.
Tried the home+power boot
Tried the volume down + power then home
always ends in the same screen with no recovery.
Tried multiple times to install the .5 RUU
Reset phone
never can get back there to the recovery?
Phone will boot fine into 2.1 and run fine..
Anyone have any ideas, I have tried everything I can think of.
Thanks
Did u try placing the recovery on ur SD card and flashing it threw terminal on ur phone
Root-Hack-Mod-Always™
You lost root, as far as I remember the .6 update was to block the corrent rooting efforts that you see around here, thats why the rooting instruction say to go back to the .5 ruu.
The corrupted update your getting is just sprints server being bogged down.
What you need todo is go back and re-root your phone. Dont worry about the update untill it gets released into one of the current roms or until you here that its safe todo without losing root.

Thanks, I can't believe I missed that! I had never tried a backup before root, so I did not think about that. Now I know and hopefully this will help someone that googles this issue, as there is never a clear answer until yours.

So in closing of this thread:
if you are trying to get into recovery and see "Phone with Explanation mark" image.
it's because your phone is not rooted
So root your phone and it's all good
Also If you ever run an ruu on your phone you can kiss your root good bye no matter what version you do. but if you have nand backups you can reroot your phone and then restore one of your backups since there stored on your sdcard.

Correction: If you see this symbol, it means you don't have a custom recovery image in the phone. You can actually be rooted and still get that symbol if you haven't yet flashed a custom recovery after you rooted. You need to have a custom recovery (that requires root) to avoid getting that symbol when you try to boot into recovery.
Most rooting methods on here automatically include flashing a custom recovery as one of the steps, so this isn't really a big issue....but I just wanted to clarify the specifics of this for anyone else who reads.

only way can get there is through flash clockworkmod recovery then select either reboot in recovery mode or turn of handset and restart with home and power button, what ever flash clockworkmod recovery does to make it work as soon as it has been used i am guessing it is deleted or modified,
i have tried running it then checking files on sd card but cant see anything different

The recovery console isn't on your SD card, it's flashed to a partition inside your phone's memory. So you won't see anything different on your card.
And if you can boot into recovery by "restart with home and power button" like you say, then it's working as it should -- that's how you get into recovery.

just had a friendly member point out what i was starting to suspect the problem lies with the custom recovery being flashed back to stock on every restart, the shell command here
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh this stops any custom recovery on reboot. any advice on what tools to edit or remove
Delete that file when you get root I guess. Our as soon as you reboot into clockwork recovery, flash a rom. Use nfinitefx if you want a stock one

I always had root that was where the confusion was, what i did not know was the script was running with every boot of the handset and removing the recovery that was there as it was identified as unofficial and exclamation mark could be down to me using many methods to flash i may have renamed original recovery so when it goes to exclamation it is because cant find original recovery whether handset is rooted or not.

would that have worked? i thought about it many many times but as i had never flashed before was unsure how many times phone would reset and if it did before it was installed could i lose my recovery.
on the plus side the 2 months i have spent trying to solve this i have a much broader view of the workings of my handset and without the many members like yourself who take the time to reply and try to help others i would have given up a long time ago.

With rom grh78 the startingt phase worked but at the update on grh41 there came a failure message ,,it is not possible to make an update because a wrong rom is installed. I should have taken grh78C,,.
After the failure message I wanted to booten my mobile and after this message there just appears this google Logo.

Okay heres what you do. Is your phone currently off? If it isn't then, pull the battery out. Put the battery back in.
Hold Volume Up + Power.. KEEP HOLDING THESE TWO and you should be in bootloader. Volume down to Recovery. Does it work? Yeah? Clockwork Recovery?
Okay. Now you have two choices:
1) Stock: download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968403
Mount the phone via USB in Clockwork Recovery. Download that file and put it in /clockworkmod/backup/ (make sure you put it correct.. otherwise Clockwork wont see the file). Unmount, Check nandroid backup/restore is it there? If it isn't, recheck if you put it correctly. If so, reboot into recovery again.
2) Download a custom ROM such as CM7, Axura, GingerS, NSCollab, MIUI, whatever you want.. mount your phone via USB and put it on your sd card.
Wipe dalvik, cache, factory and flash that ROM (if you flash CM7.. you'll have to flash Gapps right after; MIUI.. flash English Language Pack right after).
Reboot. And it should go past the Google screen.
Alternatively, you should be able to plug your phone in the computer and using ADB by typing "adb reboot recovery" should get you into the recovery as well.
Edit: or do what simms suggested. Either way, you have to go into Clockwork Recovery to fix this.
it isnt working. i just come into a fastboot modus. how should i put the rom into a sd???? The mobile is recognized by the usb.

yes you're supposed to be on a screen that looks like http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qW-hye-fsWM/TWJgxyBheCI/AAAAAAAAAEE/dIO-8DPEs1M/s1600/s1.jpg
if you volume down to the third one, it says Recovery.. that should get you into Clockwork Recovery (Orangeish) http://www.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Clockwork-Recovery-3.jpg
if it looks like http://cdn.androidcommunity.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/device2-540x324.jpg (yeah aside from Dell) then you dont have clockwork recovery.
When you get into Clockwork recovery, there is a option in there to mount your USB. If you're able to get into Clockwork, I'd go to either of the steps I linked above.
Stock, CM7, Axura, MIUI, ETC. You need to replace your ROM with one of these.
Since you seem pretty new, I'd just stick with stock because that's what you're most comfortable with.
Zephik is trying really hard to help you here man. You need to read what he has written very carefully, supply more information, and follow the instructions really carefully. Then you can fix your phone without a problem.
Let us know how it goes.

You don't have Clockwork Recovery then. Do you have the SDK installed? You need to go through the guides to set up SDK if you don't have it installed already.

Pretty much.. you just need to fastboot flash http://koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-crespo.img
Download the clockwork recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-crespo.img image, and save it to the ..\android-sdk-windows\tools directory
renamed it to recovery.img
then type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and hit enter
you should get something like this, if not your image is corrupted, download it again

You need USB drivers for the Nexus S for the device to be recognized on your system.

Or that.. but Odin isn't very popular with the Nexus S.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947950
Option is there if you want to go that route. I used to use Odin for the Vibrant but I'm not too familiar with it for the Nexus S as its not as popular. If the OP decides to go with Odin then I can't assist you.
I really want to see how this pans out. He cannot be any more of a noob than I was very recently and I got the hang of it (zephik helped me too) so he should be able to fix it.
It's amazing the help you can get for free on this forum. If zephik was running a mobile phone shop be would be making money with the information he's providing ( although it would be much easier for him to take the phone away from the OP for 15 minutes and flash it himself ;-) ).
Search function is down but I did go through a few pages of threads looking for what was going on and no luck but I apologize if this has been solved somewhere else.
First off I would rate my rooting know-how as beginner to intermediate. I've jailbroken/unlocked multiple iPhones awhile back and have rooted/flashed roms on a cliq, mts, my3g, and this mt4g before.
I recently returned my current mt4g back to stock rom and unrooted. I do not think I turned s back on but I should have double checked before.
I currently have root and flashed clockwork and am trying to flash CM7 (I had ran it before on this phone as well). I have an issue right now where I cannot get into clockwork recovery as it will just sit at the mytouch logo forever and if I try and volume up and power into recovery all I get is 3 vibrations and a flashing amber light.
I can boot into the stock (but rooted) rom.
Any ideas? I feel like my recovery is broken or something but this goes beyond what I know. Any help would be great and any information you need I'll be happy to provide.
myTouch 4G, rooted, s (probably) off, stock rom, clockwork says i'm on 3.0.2.4
After reading that, I'm not fully convinced you actually have root and S-OFF. If you're sure you do, download ROM Manager from the Market and use that to install a fresh copy of CWM recovery. Also make sure the "fast boot" option is turned off somewhere under Settings. At that point, there should be nothing preventing you from getting into recovery if you have perm root.
I've got ROM Manager and it has SU permissions and I have the latest recovery flashed but I am still stuck on mytouch logo or the 3 vibrations/amber light when I try to get to recovery. If I reboot there is still no problem getting SU in terminal emulator or ROM manager or anything.
Fast boot is off as well. Thanks for the help so far.
Any ideas?
I don't often boot into recovery manually since most custom ROMs have an enhanced reboot menu with a recovery option, but if memory serves, I believe the key press combination is actually Power + Volume Down, not up like you mentioned in your OP. Give that a try.
Man I am really crazy. Here I am a tmo rep and also a novice modder and I'm hitting power + volume up.
Worked like a charm.. Now just to figure out why clockwork is sitting at the mytouch screen when trying to install CM7.
Thanks for the fresh set of eyes!

From ROM Manager if I try to flash CM7 from there it goes to the mytouch screen and hangs before anything else happens.

So you don't have a good installation of CWM. Open ROM Manager again and re-flash a fresh recovery. I think there's an option to wipe your existing recovery beforehand, so if you see that, select it. You need to get a working recovery image before you can do much else.
Deleted current recovery and I confirm my model again and it takes a total of 5 seconds. Trying to reboot into recovery again after and I still hang at MT4G.
I hate it when you know something you need to do but you've been working on it so long you can't come up with new ideas.
Thanks again for the help.
Sorry multipost since it didn't register on my computer the first time for some reason
Yeah sorry man, I've never heard of a situation where CWM stubbornly refuses to install. If you have the engineering bootloader, you could manually flash it that way, but that's my only other idea.
Alright well thanks for all the help man, I'll dig around and pick up tomorrow.
I ended up looking for the recovery myself on the SD card and deleted it and then it flashed no problem. Thanks again for the help

Hello,
my A500 is now in unstable, weird state, i tried to flash ROM update, but i forgot an old update.zip on SD and also that i have no CWM more. My fault of course.
It started to flash again, suddenly stopped. Now if i reboot, i am on my old ROM, but only Power off .. shutting down message appears. I can touch time, settings, but unable anything to do. Message is still there. I tried to press RESET button, no way. I tried to flash it again with rescue Update.zip no way. Just message still there.
Looks like, it wants to shut down, but this never happens from some reason. But why it is again after reboot there, i don't know.
Any advice please ?
Thanks, Ed

I had exactly this problem myself a few days ago...cwm was corrupted and the fix was to download official rom which was chinese and put it onto my external sd card. Then pressing power/volume up forced the update which also reset the cwm and boot sector back to stock. After this I used the official 3.1 rom on this website to update with english version and market app then finally install cwm to use roms.whew it was painful and i cannotremember where i got the chinese rom from...so im only slightly helpful.

Can somebody tell me why even after flashing stock DL17 and flashing cwm_recovery_test4_adryn, no matter what I do in the stock recovery the screen only shows the triangle with the exclamation mark in the middle and the Android standing next to it. If this was answered in another thread I'm sorry for posting and not looking harder but it seems like people were having all kinds of problems with CWM after flashing Froyo and nobody could give a straight answer. I know none of the files are corrupt because I've downloaded them several times and from within different threads. I've even reformatted my sd card. CWM was working fine with no problems at all until I flashed the Froyo ROM that imnuts put out
Well young sir, the little android guy comes up when you hold down volume button while turning on, so are you pressing both up and down volume buttons to load recovery?

Yea, I'm pressing both buttons and it boots into the stock recovery but whenever I try to reboot the system, apply the update.zip, wipe data/factory reset or wipe the cache nothing ever happens. The menu goes away and there's no text on the screen at all. I've left it alone for a couple minutes and nothing ever happens
Ok so I went to recovery mode and noticed that when you hit the back and home keys the words go away, which brings me to this question, are you using the far left menu key to make your selection

Bahaha. Holy crap I feel so retarded. I was hitting the back button because I forgot that I changed my softkey layout. It works fine. Thank you for that
Ha ha, im glad it all works now

Okay can you tell me why after I flash the Froyo modem when I boot into recovery I get:
"E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted."
It says this before and after if flashed cwm_recovery_test4_adryn
just reflash the cwm odin image
if you flashed the dl17 odin image before....something inside that actually causes the cwm recovery to go away and uses only the stock.
i know you have to delete something to stop it from doing that but i cant quite remember.
so recap, if you are on the dl17 odin image that imnuts released to us then you will have to reflash cwm everytime until you erase a necesarry file
oh and what exactly are you trying to do
if my explanations dont make sense please let me know, im actually driving right now.
Yea, my brother was talking about that but he didn't remember what to delete either. It doesn't help when you're extremely tired

I can flash stock DL17 and then cwm_recovery_test4_adryn and CWM works fine. It's when I flash the Froyo modem that it messes up on me
I think I figured it out. I had to flash the original recovery that Trailblazer uploaded and before even turning my phone on I flashed cwm_recovery_test4_adryn and it works fine now. Crazy phone
