i'm relatively new to android, and i wondered if someone could take me through the steps required to take my gt540 from stock 1.6 to stock 2.1, make a backup, and then to install 2.3 on it. what order do things need to be done in? and what is fastboot? is it essential?
i've found a couple of beginners' guides on modaco, but neither seem to go through the whole process so i'm always left with more questions.
i have a carphone warehouse unlocked gt540. as i understand it i can install a cpw+fastboot 2.1 rom, and then install clockwork, back up the system, and then use fastboot to install the new 2.3 rom. is that correct?
any help most welcome, i've been puzzling over this for weeks!
http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-gt540/276446-cyanogenmod-7-android-2-3-avaliable-gt540.html
use this guide.
but first of all you have to have Andoid SDK, platform-tools, Java JDK to be installed.

Is there someone out there that may know where to download the Android 2.1 software? I would like to install it on my Mytouch, if thats possible... Correct me if I am wrong, but I should be able to just boot into CM's recovery console, and update it with the update.zip yes?
Hi,
if you want to try 2.1, I'd suggest Manup456's ROM.
Be aware that a few things still don't work (read the ROM description for details).
and yes the flashing process is the same as usual
1. Backup device.... (how?)
2. follow unlockr.com instructions to root Hero:
"how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click"
3. download whichever rom you fancy from xda forum
4. follow unlockr.com instructions to flash new rom to Hero:
"how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-your-htc-hero"
5. test and enjoy.
Did I miss anything? Other than what is the best way to backup my phone's stock, virgin state?
I'm just trying to avoid having to buy a new device outright from Sprint should I mess up and brick the device.
I read a bit about NanDroid but not sure if that is what I should do.
Any other things I should do? Consider? Etc?
My goal here is to run Android 2.1
I am so sick of slow, laggy 1.5
I do realize the update is soon to come, but I don't trust Sprint or HTC to release it in a timely manner, and even if they do, I'm not sure it would run as quickly as a custom rom could.
Thanks in advance. This forum is totally awesome and completely overwhelming.
UPDATE:
I rooted the phone using this guide:
[GUIDE] How To Root The Sprint CDMA Hero (Windows)
I had to then use cmd prompt and abd shell to boot into recovery mode, as i was getting the skateboard screen.
i wiped, then attempted to load the villian 3.3 rom
i got the failure at line 2 message (installation aborted)
i believe it's b/c i installed the OTA update when it came out, making my software version: 1.56.651.2
I have tried to downgrade this using the RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.29.651.1_signed_release
package but it won't recognize my phone. I'm on w7 64 bit.
I tried some tutorial about installing the vista usb drivers but it didn't work.
Also, just found out my SD card is formatted FAT32. Do I need to re-format to FAT?
If so, what files to I copy to the newly formatted SD card?
this is a crazy rabbit hole, but i did successfully root the phone b/c i have a nandroid backup and such.
what's next?
any help is greatly appreciated!

You should be very glad that it did! Villian ROMs are not for Sprint Heros, they are for GSM Heros!
If you want a ROM for a CDMA Hero, check out the CDMA subforum.

D'oh!
haha.
Thanks buddy.
Can someone help me. i want to install some custom roms, but i cant get the root thing to work.
i've tried to make a goldcard, but i only get error 171
and the other methods i have tried, the phone disconnects once i launche the downgrade program..
need some serious help
thank you in advance..
have you made the goldcard correctly, are you using an ruu to downgrade, are your adb drivers for 2.1 installed correcly, what opperating system, x64 or x86?
Please go to the sticky in the development forum, and try that guide.
It works on ota or ruu 2.1, so that should get you sorted out.
I'm really wanting to root my Wildfire but just as I was away to download I thought that there might be a problem. So my question is:
My Wildfire is supplied by a carrier (specifically 3 in the UK) and presumably locked to said carrier, will I need to make a goldcard or anything like that before rooting it with Unrevoked or installing CyanogenMod?
To root the Wildfire, you don't need a gold card to do that.
But to install a custom rom, you will need to create a gold card.
If you look in this forum, there's a nice tutorial that takes you thru step-by-step on how to create a gold card.
So to install CM I'll need to make a goldcard?
I've looked up some information on it and all the guides mention Windows computers, I only have Mac and Linux boxes in my house, is there anything I can do?
I'm not sure if you can actually make one without a windows machine.
I'm quite new to this Android thing myself.
And funnily, I also own a Mac - and no, not going back to Windows anytime soon! ><
Anyways~ what I did is run Windows via Parallels Desktop.
Something to keep in mind when you do install a Custom rom on your HTC. Is that, when you want to revert back to the original/stock rom. The packages that HTC release are for Windows. So you will need to run those packages under Windows to revert back to the stock rom.
P.S. If anything I said is incorrect, can someone please correct me. Ta.
You don't actually need a goldcard to install a custom ROM - it's only if you need to use an older RUU.
Thanks for all the help guys .
Gave it a try and it worked fine . But I reverted back to my backup I made and I'm gonna keep it like that until I have a full day when I can install and play around with CM fully.
Dont forget to take nandroid backup first before you root
hey xda community
i am trying to update my little cousin's android phone (i am pretty sure that it is a G1 Dream, though it does NOT have any htc tags on it..) am pretty sure that its 2-3 years old(as it is running Android Market beta...) and i wanted to do him a favor by updating it so that he can run "some of the apps on his mom's phone". Please lemme know what you guys think

Check out CyanogenMod. You'll want 6.0, maybe 6.1.
I personally run ezGingerbread, but Froyo should run better on this old thing.
Sent from my HTC Dream - old and still kicking!

can you send me a tutorial. I am new to rooting and updating android. im familiar with android itself because i use ubuntu as a main os, not so much the modding side of it.

I'm surprised that it hasn't gotten an OTA update to 2.2.1.
Flashing someone else's phone is always a risky proposition and can brick the phone.
Seriously, you should just do a power&camera (or power&back) into boot-loader and post everything that screen says.
However, if you are determined to do it anyway, for something that is pretty quick and reliable, using Froyo by Laszlo is pretty nice, or ADS_Magpie (note, the need for a custom MTD).
First things first, you will need to follow the directions in the SPL/Radio thread to get you onto Amon_Ra and the right SPL/Radio combination.
SPL/Radio: 1.33.0013d/2.22.28.25,
And a custom recovery: Amon_Ra-v1.7.0.
The custom Rom: FroyobyLaszlo.
Latest Kernel: ezTerry kernel for Froyo.
Once these are saved, you will need to also grab Oshaka's SuperWipev2.
Seriously, you sure you want to do this? Flashing a custom radio/spl can brick the phone if not done correctly or the correct versions aren't used.
Here are the steps:
1) Follow the instructions in the SPL/Radio post to get you onto Ra and the right Radio/SPL for your phone.
2) Boot into recovery (Amon_Ra) and format your SDCard (Then upgrade the ext partition to ext3 or ext4 - I use ext4)
3) Copy Ohshaka's SuperWipe, Froyo, and Ezterry's kernel to your sdcard using USB-MS or adb
4) Make a Nandroid backup
5) Flash Ohshaka's Superwipe
6) Flash Froyo
7) Fash Ezterry's Kernel
8) Reboot into your new Rom install

also easyfastboot and droid explorer are a must have once you get that far
also try super d for your first rom! you will love it!
any other questions search forum and if you still need help post
