Hiya guys,
I'm sorry that, like most other threads of this nature, my first post is a "HELP ME!" type affair.
Having issues with my HTC Vodafone Magic, when I turn it on it goes onto the Vodafone splash screen and no further.
Before I start asking about installing a new ROM and all that stuff (of which I have no clue whatsoever), I found this in the FAQ sticky and was wondering if it applies to me:
Q- I cant go past the first splash screen and i cant move into recovery or bootloader
A- Say goodbye to your phone, it is bricked.
Remedy- PM me maybe i can help you get a new phone (already got a new phone after bricking)

If I hold down the volume key and press the power button it goes into a white screen with what I'm assuming is the ROM data:

Is there any hope for fixing my phone?
Thanks for looking at this thread.
Tony
yes there is... you should be in a good shape...
What have you done to get to this state?
I'm unsure what you mean?
What have you done to get into this state...
E.g.
Did change anything in the rom?
Did you flash a sappimg.zip?
Did you just wake up and the device was like that?
Did your dog mess up your device while you were sleeping?
What did you do to get into this state?
My bad.
I bought the phone second hand, bloke said he'd tried updating the software but it hadn't worked.
My phone was working fine the other day, and mid-conversation on a phone call it turned itself off. Tried turning it back on but it just goes to the Vodafone splashscreen and no further.
Tried doing a hard reset, but the phone looks for some .zip files and says "no image found!" for every folder it looks through.
There was an App on the phone called Clockwork, which is something to do with ROM changing.
Cheers for your help so far!

You need to get fastboot up and running so that we can grab some information off the phone, but like mumi said, its fixable. Get fastboot installed (a search will aid you there) and myself or mumi will post back with what to do next. Hope your familiar with navigating DOS as your about to get a crash course if not.

you can fix it through fastboot.
try to flash recovery into your g2 first
Hiys guys, sorry for taking so long to get back.
Work has been hectic so unable to sort anything out, ended getting a Desire HD on contract in the end.
Will be keeping the Magic to play and learn with, but for the forseeable future I'm swamped with work, so I will get back on here and sort the thing out when I can.
Thanks for your help so far guys, I will return! DOS will be a new experience for me

The same thing happened to me. I completely bricked it. Couldn't get into fastboot. Phone wouldn't even turn on, computer wouldn't recognize it, LED's would not come on when plugged into charger or phone. It was that bad. I just went to the T-Mobile store and said that it got like that over night when I left it charging. They sent me a new one under buyer's remorse. It worked out great for me. As for how it did it, I did it the same exact way you did. When applying the 32B radio I didn't flash the radio right. Idk if you read Amon_Ra's guide on how to root it. He didn't specify at first how to flash the radio so when guessing I broke it. Then a few hours later he then posted how to flash it. Just my luck! But I now have a new mytouch and when I followed his directions exactly for the 32B, it went off like a charm. 32B is necessary if you are going to run Hero roms because it is expecting the extra RAM to push it harder. Not so sure about Non-Hero Roms but I believe it might be the same thing. If your phone is as bad as mine, just use the same excuse. They will think it is a defective handset and send you a brand new one, not a refurb. I tried everything to get back into fastboot but I couldn't get the damn thing to start up. It was a sad day. We now have 3 rooted myTouch's that are working great. Hope this helps.

haha how ironic
if you have insurance on the phone...smash it and send it back. make sure the mobo is broken though and not just the screen. if not, well...sorry to hear about your new paper weight.
trying my hardest not to flame here, but.....
specify the guide you followed... a link to it would be a good start
state exactly what steps you did
state what conditions have occured (eg. stuck on logo, wont even power, etc)
state the actions you have taken to try to repair (sometimes you can make things worse but at least we'd know what you've done)
it's rather inconsiderate to not take the time to post these essential points.
you are expecting us to spend more time thinking and explaining your problem then you have bothered. not cool.
i concur..i try my best not to flame people, but in some situations, such as this one, a flame is appropriate....
i have bricked my HTC Magic while i was trying to flash this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=549591)
but i guess i missed/skipped and had the wrong radio, so then after that all i get is a HTC Magic boot up screen and nothing else.
non of the button combinations work, i cant get to fastboot or recovery using the buttons.
is there anything i can do? any suggestions?!
P.S I DO have a Nandroid Backup (if that can help)

Nandroid backups are useless unless you can get into recovery, or perhaps fastboot through a PC. But if you're bricked like these guys...then that's not possible.

I don't think a flame is necessarily appropriate... Obviously the guy is distraught and doesn't know what else to do and is looking for support - not the time to get on him for not following the right protocol.
I understand your frustration, but try to understand his as well... if you don't want to help, then just let it go - somone else most likely will.
I bricked in the first hour, just think how i feel looking at the phone. $600 for a phonedummy
you gonna tell us what you did to brick it? what radio you applied? What methods you used?

Hi all,
I'm a complete newbie. Most of you will have little patience for me but I'm hoping to find at least a couple of you willing to help me out. Here's my story. I thought it would be cool to by a used HTC Magic from Ebay to use with AT&T. The guy that sold it to me put Froyo on it and I was excited to have the latest Android on the phone.
I got it yesterday and the trouble started quasi immediately. I will post the exact things that happened as well as I can.
1. First the phone was rebooting on its own. It would make it as far as the home screen with the icons but if I tried to press anything, like contacts, it would reboot.
2. Then it eventually took me to the recovery screen where, after reading several threads, I downloaded the newest (not ROM, but whatever the first thing is on that page that you can update it).
3. Then the phone stopped rebooting itself but I couldn't get to the market or email because the dumbass that sold me the phone hadn't wiped his user info. So I googled again and was told to factory reset.
4. I tried factory reset 3 times and it did nothing.
5. Went back to the recovery page to see if that had anything that would help and I clicked Fix Permissions and let it run that.
6. Still no change when it came to wiping his user info.
7. Got frustrated and googled again. This time I saw a thread that said you should reboot using the up/down key and power. Did that.
Since then, I've had a blinking HTC green screen. At some point during this process I made it to what looks like a basic OS window from which I copied the following information:
sapphire pvt 32b eng s-off h
1.33.2005
radio-2.22.19.261
apr 20 2009, 15:30:43
hboot
What do you suggest I do now? I emailed the guy who sold me the phone because I figure if he put it on there, he can put it back. Or at least send me the files. Not sure he will care or want to help me. Besides, doesn't seem like he got it right.
I am willing to try to fix this myself but I don't want to start downloading files and flashing the phone only to destroy it. Guidance is needed.
Thank you in advance.
Seelier.
Metuchen, NJ
If the device actually booting then you should be alright, just sounds as if the guy who sold it to you flashed it with something crappy.
1.33.2005 is your SPL version, and that particular SPL version is what's referred to as an "engineering SPL" which allows you to flash roms and custom recoveries via fastboot (basically). For more info you can read here , but it doesn't overly concern you now.
To flash any roms yourself (more easily) you will need a custom recovery such as Amon_RA's Recovery, which you can download in this thread. Follow his instructions. You may already have this but you didn't say so.
Once you have done so, I suggest you install a ROM such as CyanogenMod, which you can get from here. Again, instructions on how-to flash it are in his thread. Essentially though, it is as follows:
- Put cyanogenmod rom on your SD card.
- Boot in to recovery screen (press the ON button whilst holding HOME)
- Wipe data/dalvik-cache
- Flash .zip from SD card & choose the file you put there
- Reboot the phone and wait patiently
Edit: Just to reassure, the things that tend to "brick" phones are flashing SPL and Radio updates, which you don't appear to need to do. Flashing roms very rarely causes devices to break, it is usually just the rom at fault.
Not Development related. Moved to General.
OP, next time you post make sure you post in the correct section or I'll close the thread.
Ok, so I don't really know what happened. I rooted my Nexus one a few weeks ago with super one click, and used rom manager to flash clockworkmod recovery, partition my sd card, and then flash CM6.1, everything went fine and it was much easier and quicker than I thought it would be to do.
So, for my fiance's birthday today I started to do the same for her Mytouch 3G as a birthday surprise. I was able to get it rooted using super one click, flashed clockworkmod recovery with rom manager, and everything seemed fine. Then I tried to flash CM6, and it didn't work, then tried it a few more times, and a few other ways, and now the mytouch green screen is looping and I can't get it to turn all the way on, and now I'm going on 6+ hours and I am stumped.
Can anyone please please please help!
I am still able to get to fastboot, and also to clockworkmod recovery, but I have no idea what to do from there, and I have tried everything that my unknowledgable brain can think of. I have done a ton of searches but I can't seem to find any anwers.
Can anyone please help, I would really appreciate it! This turned from a birthday surprise to make her phone more awesome, and now I can't even get it to be usable. :-(

Thank you so much for your reply! I am still really stumped,
Ok, I did exactly what you said to do (twice), and everything looks good up to this point:
(ok, couldn't get the image to link in here because I don't have over 8 posts yet, I can either pm the link, or email the photo or the link)
where it just goes back to the clockworkmod recovery, so I went to reboot, and it gets stuck back in the loop.
Also, the only time I can catch it to either get into fastboot to shut the phone down or get it into clockworkmod recovery is in between the loops (not sure if that info helps)
Thank you again for your help (and anyone else who can help as well). I have skype btw, if it might be easier to help that way.
Also, anyone who can either help me get back to stock froyo or flashed to CM6, there's beer money in it for you! I can't afford a new phone at the moment, and I am really feeling rather embarrassed and inadequate at the moment, lol.
Thanks,
- Muteminority

Dude I just flashed that ROM on my phone and it's freaking sweet. That's gotta be one of the best theme jobs I've seen.
It is pretty awesome, and she's loving it! She's said, and from the little bit that I've played with it, that it is a decent bit faster. Although I'm thinking that may in part be because of ADW launcher (which she had never tried before), and also I think she got rid of a few apps that were just taking up space.
Either way, she's super happy with it!
Also, in case anyone was interested, we had to revert back to the unrooted stock 1.6 to get it out of the boot loop, and then rooted with universal androot app, and then flashed Ra recovery through rom manager, and then flashed the rom/theme from Ra recovery. And everything is working great, and I learned quite a bit about this stuff over the past few days!!!
Thanks again to DonJuan692006, I really appreciate it!!!
Now I'm thinking of trying out the CM7 Nightlies on my N1, ;-)

Hi, after hours of researching to find the problem, i cant find it so as my last resort i will ask the mighty forums if there is anything they can do about it.
The problem is that its stuck in a boot loop, i can get in to bootloader and Hboot.
When i press to go in to recovery its just goes to the HTC logo and stays there.
When i try to do a factory reset same thing happened.
Anyway, the facts.
Its a DHD it used to have leedroid latest as rom, atm i have no idea it is supposed to be 1.32 stock rom for rooting and RADIO-26.14.04.28_M, kernel was also leedroid recommended but i guess that also is 1.32 stock.
It was ENG S-OFF but then i tried some PD98IMG and it changed to SHIP S-OFF
Things that i have tried.
Tried different PD98IMG to get the recovery working but nothing same thing happened there.
Tried patched/flashed the recovery part only with no luck.
Tried to get into recovery through pulling the battery inserting the usb and then inserting the battery again, no luck.
The odd thing is when i try to charge the phone and the led goes orange and when i pull the usb out it stays orange, it should turn off.
I suppose i ****ed something over but i have no clue of what that is?!?
Help would be most appreciated
I'm suggesting everyone to give this method a try although i have no experience with it but since it can be used to recover using computer i believe recovery isn't necessary here so that you can recover the firmware using the PC.
Hope this helps

Done and failed, same problem no difference what so ever.
SHIP S-OFF is OK!! U got it m8!
If you want to use your own Image do it within this way:
1. Flash this: http://www.multiupload.com/FKJ8B7Q0QM
and after this:
2. Flash this: http://www.multiupload.com/AURLLESU5V
And enjoy it! I don't know why the PD98IMG is not working on your device so I recomend to flash the RUU. Within the RUU you will also get the latest firmware for phone and wifi and so on. It's not a need, it's a must!
The 2nd ROM is same as above but it's ROOTED and contains the 4ext Recovery which will give you the option to flash whatever you want.
BUT!!! This ROM's are ORIGINAL. If you want to use a CUSTOM ROM I would recomend you will format your device by the 4ext Recovery or you are using the FULL WIPE 1.5.
Regards!
Sorry for the insane delay.
That did not work either, anyone else have any idea what to do, installing through PD98IMG.zip files seams not to work, will at this point do anything.
I'am a student so buying a new one is out of the question.
I tend to have to see things to understand them more. Maybe other people are similar. Is it possible you can video the process, put it on YouTube and some of the experts here can see it and talk you through it?

when you flashed PD98IMG.zip does it give you a cid error?. If this is the error then a gold card needs to be made for your device first, then you flash the RUU.
Back again.
No CID error, its skips something called TP when i try to flash it.
I can use any simcard, its an unbranded phone i believe.
And also if it is to any help, when i plug my charger in the phone and then back out again, the little orange led keeps emitting light, as if it stills charging.
My English is not very good.
I want to know what did you do for it before its stuck in a boot loop?
You can get into HBOOT and connect the phone to the computer, then try to run RUU.Before you do this, make sure you have make golden card.
Try another pd zip..i came across a few corrupt ones, the answers in this site somewhere alterbatively google the sentence you want the answer to..or the key words,if the systems still working theres a 98% chance youll get it going boot loops from what i see are just a file or something causing chaos..once its gone voila.
Good luck

Enter hboot and paste exactly what it says in there.
SHIP AND ENG don't matter as long as it's S-OFF. If you can't access recovery and if you're unable for some reason to flash a PDimg, download AAHK and use it to unroot. That will hopefully get you into the stock ROM and S-ON of course.
Use AAHK again to root. You will still have access to your stock ROM.
Now here's the tricky part. If the phone won't boot at all that probably means there's nothing to boot at all. Happened to me a lot of times. If you can still get into hboot then don't panic. See if AAHK will help you out.
Hey xda crew,
I am pretty sure my Desire Z is up sh*t creek now without a hope. As such I am here with my begging on... Help please!!
Last night I went through the app library and manually updated about 7 apps simultaneously. At some point the phone hung, and wouldn't respond. I pulled the battery and booted it back up, and it simply hung again as soon as it connected to wifi. It ran fine without a data connection however.
So this went on and on. I booted, connected to wifi and tried to kill each download asap before it hung again (can't access the market to kill the d/l w/o connection!). Inevitably it would hang each time and then i'd repeat. Finally though it simply got stuck on the HTC boot screen and never went any further.
I've tried everything googleable so far, but unfortunately no love. Here are my specs:
Desire Z, stock standard, no modding, ever.

I have tried the following to recover the phone:
Leave it loading on HTC screen (30+ mins): Never loads
Factory reset in HBOOT: Hangs
Recovery in HBOOT: Goes to HTC screen, then the green recovery icon, and then blacks out. As soon as the screen goes black it vibrates fiercely 7 times in anger and then dies.
Fastboot w/ RUU_Vision_Gingerbread_S_hTC_Asia_TW_2.42.709.10_Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M_release_201045_signed.exe: RUU sees phone but cannot reboot into bootloader, times out.
Flash manually using PC10IMG.zip, (rom.zip) from the RUU above: Initially didn't work due to CID invalid warning in HBOOT, however have made a gold card manually on PC and gotten past that warning. The ROM reads and verifies fully in HBOOT but upon verification just goes back to HBOOT screen without the option to flash.
With the intent to wipe everything: Flash the HBOOT with an engineering version from here: virtuousrom.com/2011/06/t-mobile-g2-users-migrating-to-desirez.html: As per the RUU Rom, HBOOT reads and verifies successfully but never gives the option to flash.
Erase cache from fastboot command line: Hangs
Beyond that I don't know what else to try. I can't use adb as I cannot boot and don't have any custom recovery roms installed that will allow it. Likewise I can't flash with fastboot due to S-ON.
So because warranty ended a month ago, it goes in the bin tomorrow unless someone has an alternative Even if it is a highly dangerous method, I don't really care, it's good as dead anyway...
Interestingly enough it seems there are a few people with the same issue, all posted within about a week of each other. Everyone was doing the same thing... updating a bunch of apps!
Thanks in advance
When I rooted mine, I simply followed the instructions provided over at CyanogenMod ( http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/TMobile_G2:_Firmware_Downgrade_(Gingerbread) ) doing the firmware downgrade and then the rooting exploit, from there I actually upgraded the radio (thread in my signature) and then got the EliteMod rom.

Thanks for taking the time to help out mate.
As it stands, there is no way to use adb so I can't downgrade as per the directions in the link.
I have since tried several other newer and older roms as well, still the same thing, it unpacks them and verifies and then does nothing.
Quite sure now it is dead, so I have just bought a new one off ebay.
Poor old thing, I did enjoy that phone!

Yes, you are absolutely right... I was thinking the same thing. Thew new one will be rooted the minute it arrives. The good news i suppose is that desire z's are so cheap now that they are discontinued.
I honestly love the functionality, speed etc.. no need to upgrade whatsoever.
Your bootloader is stock and you are S-On why not just use your warranty ?
