This is the latest release of my fix (June 14, 2011). This version addresses the Market ID and Moto Blur issue.
I have not had a chance to test the latest version, aside from verifying the awk command works as exptected. The rest is a strong educated guess, mixed with a re-tooling of it to just use Android Debug Bridge to do what I was having scripts do in the past. Should be much more reliable.
IF YOU DECIDE TO USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS: PLEASE, read through this page entirely from top to bottom at least once prior to doing anything. This way, if you are unsure on anything, you can ask the questions you need answers to. I am not liable for anybody messing up their phone because they didn't think to read the F'n manual prior to following these steps.
If you don't read this through completely before starting, and you brick your system, Don't come crying to me. I warned you.
This version makes it close to impossible to brick the system, but I left that bit in to cover my arse.
Earlier today, I wrote instructions on how to root the flipside. Now, I have Unknown Sources enabled. Here's how you can do it.
First, if you don't have root, follow these directions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9702394&postcount=4
Next, you will need to run a script, but for the script to work you will need to install busybox to your rooted flipside. You can either get it from the market, or download it somewhere on the web. I tried installing it from the market, but it just timed out on download for some reason.
Once you have busybox, you have an environment ready for enabling Unknown Sources. Lets do it:
Latest version installs busybox for you]
I have not tested it, so you may still need to tell it to install, but it installs the apk.
1. Download the attachment located in this post.
Unzip to a folder on your desktop.
PLUG IN YOUR PHONE NOW!!!
Double click on the batch file ("enable_unknown_sources.bat"). You may have to run as administrator, but I don't think so. Built on Windows XP (I'm a linux guy who wrote this at work in a couple minutes)
When it prompts for you to OK the super user for "unknown", look at your phone. It should have a prompt. If not, it may be ok. We will see....
once your phone has rebooted, you phone will have "unknown sources" enabled already. Don't worry about rebooting. The batch file did that for you.
Quite a bit less work than before. Good news: it's done! never to worry about it again...unless you upgrade....
DISCLAIMER:
DO NOT FOLLOW ANY OF MY STEPS IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING! I have done my best to ensure that the instructions are accurate, but I made mistakes in the first revision, so who's to say that I didn't miss something this go 'round as well? If you decide to follow this walk-through, your actions are an agreement to not hold me liable if your phone becomes a pretty brick. I am not responsible for what you do with this information. If you have no idea how to do any portion of these instructions, you can either walk away (best idea), or ask for help here.
I am also not the 2nd shooter on the grassy knoll, nor am I the cause of all your woes throughout life. I always wanted to say that in a disclaimer.
run_second.sh
i get errors when i attempt to run your run_second
though for the life of me... i can't figure out what's wrong with it?
What error do you get?
on all 4 of the cp commands... i get a return of
cp: (destination directory): Invalid argument
EDIT: tried the run.sh script... got an invalid file/folder error on the mount... on one of the cp's... and on the chmod of the same
EDIT: i manually edited the 2 files in the system directory using notepad++ and droid explorer...
couldn't find the 2 databases anywhere on the phone? hidden?
Odd. I did this:
Code:
ls /data/data/com.motorola.android.providers.settings/databases
and I get this back:
Code:
settings.db
The only time I cannot do that is if I don't have super user.
DOH! just realized the issue. once you type "SU", go to your phone, and tell it to allow application "unknown" super user.
Forgot about that part.
well... here's one for you then... i have nothing in my /data/ directory...
never did...
EDIT: wait... droid explorer lied to me... now if i could just get into that file... i could hard change them without having to deal with all the scripting
script typo
Thanks for the script. I have managed to enable it by following your script.
However there are a few typo in your script that caused errors. I have corrected them. You may check attached script.

Did you install busybox? Please, run through what you have done so far. My goal is to get a comprehensive how-to together, and any and all input I can get will assist me to that end.
i'm getting read only file errors on the script now... i assume some file attributes need adjusting... not sure how to do that...
Did you remount /system/ in rw mode, as mentioned in the walkthrough? /system is read only by default, but part of my how-to explains how to re-mount it in read/write
all 5 chmod statements return no file found....
EDIT: even reboot is no found
that sounds like you don't have super user, or busybox isn't installed.
i have super user access... i used z4root... this also installs busybox... or so i'm told...

That does not install busybox. As stated in my how-to, you will need to either download busybox from the market, or get it from the web.
I know it says it does, but I didn't have busybox features until I installed it manually myself.
root explorer FTW
so... after using root explorer to manually edit the mkitso files... and copy the databases from the /ab/ directory....
i made it work...
Hallo there. Please I would appreciate if you can help me. When you say:
1.Look for the one that says "/system". Mine says "/dev/block/mtdblock7"
- Mine says the same too, is that right? Could it be different? Why sould we care where it says 'system'?
2.'type this in (changing the /dev/ as needed)':
-When you say 'as needed' that means changing the /dev/ is not neccesary? What does ir depends? If it's neccesary, what should I type instead of /dev/?
3. 'Code:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock7 /system'
-Must that line be typed exactly as it's shown? I've done so and after running the commands:
cd /sdcard/
sh run.sh
-This error message appears:
No such file or directory
I've rooted with z4. I've already installed BusyBox from the market, altought I can see it's not an app that appears like the others: I've just got an Icon named 'busyBox Installer' and after all it says 'busybox is successfully installed'.
Please excuse my bad english and thank you very much in advance for your help
1. I wrote it that way just in case it was different anywhere else. It shouldn't be.
2. when I said "change /dev/..." It was in reference to 1. above
If /system is /dev/block/mtdblock7 as listed, you don't need to change it.
If /system is /dev/block/mtdblock21 (example), you would need to change my command to read:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock21 /system
That's what I mean when I said change /dev as needed. Seeing how yours is the same as mine, that is not necessary.
3. the command to mount /system will not affect the sdcard. Make sure the /sdcard isn't mounted on your computer. In windows, look in "My Computer", or your languages equivelant, and if you see the phone there, right click and tell it to unmount. Wait a few seconds for the phone to access the SD card, and try again.
so, I too have problems running run.sh
I tried both the one in the original post and the typo fix in the other post. Both didn't work. I get file not found errors.
Yeah, I have z4root done and busybox installed no problem.
For some reason it's not seeing the files when I run run.sh.
Here's a copy paste just to prove what I am seeing:
Unable to chmod /system/etc/motorola/com.android.providers.settings/secure.mkitso
: No such file or directory
Unable to chmod /system/etc/motorola/com.android.providers.settings/system.mkitso
: No such file or directory
I verified that my sdcard has /ab/ folder copied over, and all the subfolders and files from the original archive are moved over.
What gives?

i've already tried but nothing , maybe can you send me a pvt message with a little guide for the installation?? p.s. i have a sdcard of 8 gb
I tried Linux on Android but it gives invalid argument mounting the loop device. Linux Deploy has an option to not use a loop device and install to a folder I think. Not positive. Try Advanced Linux Installer. That might work. It costs but it's way better than the free version. Try Standard Linux Installer first if you like.
Could you please add some note on how you managed to install?
I am trying with several options, but always get stuck on a "dd: permission denied" creating the volume
Z
I'll try to provide that info. What you're seeing likely means where it's trying to write isn't allowed. Try changing the install location to somewhere safe like /data/kali or something. Also I just found out the S5 won't do ext2 so if you're trying to do a loop device use ext4 if possible. Sorry I don't have more info at the moment.
I am having the same issue. What SU app are you using? I am using SuperSU, I read that SuperSU might be the problem but I do not know the conditions on how to switch SU apps. Hopefully we can find a solution.

Also here are screen shots of my errors, settings, and anything else I figured might be useful to you. Thanks for help in advance.
I think it's long overdue for a Galaxy S4/5 guide. I know tinkering must be done and there are several issues to negotiate. I've found scattered info here and there but nothing definitive. Complete Linux Installer or Linux Deploy. Either/or. The only way I've ever got Linux to work is by installing to a directory and doing a chroot into it and doing a debootstrap.
Please&ty.
Is the stock WiFi radio compatible with packet injection or monitor mode on the S5 that you know of? I never put much effort into the install after I had such as hard time initially, attempting to install it to my extSdCard.
Solution
Hi there, I tried to install the kali distro in a s5 (g900f) with de Linux Deploy v 1.5.5 and I couldnt, i downloaded the 1.4 and neither but with de v 1.3 I could make it!
So if you are having any troubles with the installation, just download a previous version from the project's github (here)
Hope it helps!

This guide assumes you are already rooted on 5.0.3.1 (this will work for future updates as well if @zeroepoch push out new rooted images) I will just need to update the hash check accordingly
Now before I go any further **this can brick your device** so you assume all risk associated with this method.
I have tested this on 2 of my AFTV2 devices no less than 50 times so it was safe for me. There are factors that cant be accounted for such as bad blocks on the nand. I have put in a lot of checks into this script to go off without a hitch. If something doesn't match up the script will tell you and drop you back to terminal. The safest method to date is using @zeroepoch diff and waiting 2 hours.
Or wait until someone like @rbox comes up with a custom recovery solution.
This method came down to necessity for me as I wasn't getting the 5.0.4 update (waited a week on each of my devices)
Plus I cant stand waiting around for 2 hours. @xenoglyph started this off by being the first to use the dd method and after seeing his success I figured I would automate the process because some users bricked their device because of a simple mistake (failing to unpack the .gz for the images).
I have only tested this over USB (use over network at your own risk but if you happen to please report back if it works)
How to:
All-in-One package - https://mega.nz/#!1YJXDbJa!jzy1g78qIUdsRwY4Pzw2yLLyH9pB2uo9imDaskbotY0
Mega decryption key - !jzy1g78qIUdsRwY4Pzw2yLLyH9pB2uo9imDaskbotY0
Script only package is below (you will need to download and decompress all images)
MicroSD Method:
1. Extract the .zip to a microSD card and place the card in the AFTV
2. Plug in your USB A to A cable
3. Turn on USB Debugging
4. Make sure your system sees the AFTV (adb devices) (or over wifi/wired adb connect 192.168.1.xxx -=tested see post #7 & #28=-)
5. Open adb shell (adb shell)
6. Enter the commands one at a time below
Code:
su
cd /storage/sdcard1
chmod 775 root.sh
sh ./root.sh
The device will reboot when finished (if for some reason it doesn't reboot on its own and drops you the terminal after the 60 second message, you can just pull the plug)
Internal Storage Method:
1. Extract 5.3.0.1-5.0.4-local-script.zip and adb push it to /data/local/tmp (this is the script, busybox, and verify.md5 only) you have to push images (see below)
Code:
su
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 775 root.sh
sh ./root.sh
The device will reboot when finished (At the moment reboot and busybox reboot aren't working. The script will give you a message when to reboot at the end)
After the device reboots disable OTA again just to be on the safe side:
Code:
adb shell
su
pm disable com.amazon.device.software.ota
I have a class 10 microSD and the process takes exactly 3 mins from the second you run root.sh
If you have a slower card expect it to take up to 5 mins.
If the script is tampered with it will error on the hash check

1) Does this script assume anything besides firmware 5.0.3.1 rooted? (see EDIT below)
2) Does it matter that apps may have altered /system after the 5.0.3.1 root? (for instance I have AdAway which edits /system/etc/hosts)
3) You said this takes only 3 minutes to run. Does that mean you can successfully run sync after dd?
4) The Mega link asks for a decryption key to download. Are you making this available only to a select group of people?
EDIT: Noticed that busybox is part of this rooting package. If I already have busybox on the box, should I uninstall that before running this script?
@Patrick_445
The script doesn't need to assume firmware version currently, it will only verify the script, .md5, busybox, and images being used.
Im sure I can put in a verify build prop but I have not done that yet. The only reason that would be needed is if someone downgraded when new FW comes out and that might brick their system and I believe it amazon burns fuses now so you cant downgrade.
I posted the decryption key for Mega. I don't know why it was asking you for one because the whole link includes the key.
It doesn't matter that apps alter anything in /system because its getting overwritten/upgraded anyway.
Yes it runs sync at the very end. As for time running it's really only 2 mins. I added a 60 sec sleep at the end right before the reboot just to be safe.
You do not need to delete busybox if you installed it already. busybox is included to run everything statically from the same dir and it must be present or the script will exit as soon as it does the hash check. I have done it this way because I felt it was safer than just linking.
adb over network
Hi aboshi,
first of all I want to thank you for your script. It makes updating the AFTV2 quite painless.
Otherwise I'd like to report that I did the update using adb over the network (wired) which thankfully worked, but not completely perfect.
When I ran your script in the networked adb shell it did everything as expected up to writing
"Copying system.root.img"
to the screen. Then nothing further seemed to happen. I expected that step to run a little longer, since system.root.img is by far the largest file to be written. But after some minutes, I started to get nervous. I tried to ping my AFTV2, but it wasn't reachable over the network anymore. When I looked at the TV, which is connected to my AFTV2 (different room), I could see, that the AFTV2 had rebooted and it was stuck at the colored amazon logo. I waited for about 20 further minutes, but nothing changed.
Reading about all the brick-stories here, I feared my AFTV2 was dead now. So I gave it a last chance and powercycled my AFTV2. At that second boot, the AFTV made it and after some minutes of "optimizing apps aso." it really came up. I checked the os version and I had 5.04.
So I can only guess what had happened. While writing the system image obviously the network connection got lost and thus the adb shell session terminated. The script probably continued to run, because it managed to write enough of the system image to create a working system. Probably it even ran until the end, since my AFTV2 rebooted by itself. BUT, I can't be sure about it, because I never saw the correspondig lines in my adb shell and the first reboot didn't really work out.
So my conclusion: I wouldn't recommend using the script over the network unless you are a very adventurous person or you have no other possibility. In my case I was to lazy to carry my laptop over to the AFTV2 and to install the USB drivers and adb on it. Also I just hoped the update would work. In the end I did carry my laptop over and repeated the update over USB, just to be sure. This time it worked perfect.
Greets,
Christian
@skyball2
Thank you for testing over network. I knew more than likely something like that would happen and thats why it should be done over USB.
It is due to all system files being overwritten and linking. You might have also noticed when it upgraded from 5.0.3.1 to 5.0.4 that the system black screens in the middle of the copy (but not when overwriting 5.0.4 to 5.0.4). Thankfully the script finished its job and you have a working system.
Im sure it can be done over network for others as a last resort, but I wouldn't do it personally because we have no recovery options at the moment. If anyone else wants to do this over network I HIGHLY suggest that you wait at least 10 mins before you reboot after you lose network connection, and after the reboot I would wait another 10 mins before power cycling again if stuck at the amazon logo. (so in other words UPDATE OVER USB!)

Instead of chmod 775 root.sh type this:
chmod 775 ./root.sh
And there's no need to remount sdcard1 because the script will handle that.

the zip file I downloaded doesn't have root.sh in the archive? Or am I downloading the wrong file?
I'll DL the zip right now and look.
*edit*
The zip contains root.sh, verify.md5, and busybox
Make sure your are copying them all to the microsd.
I will now go back and edit my other posts because there is no reason to remount anything for the end user.

Still don't see how you're having an issue but try this and let me know:
Instead of chmod 775 root.sh type this:
chmod 775 ./root.sh
And there's no need to remount sdcard1 because the script will handle that.

I'm being a bone head.....I didn't download the script and unzip it to the sdcard just unzipped the all in one file. I just unzipped the script file and put root.sh on the sdcard

Yes. Sorry if I wasn't clear. I only downloaded the all-in-one zip file. I didn't download the file with the script in it so the script wasn't on the sdcard. I got it sorted and I am on 5.0.4. Thanks for the help

The all in one has the script as well.
Everything works perfectly except at the end I got "Reboot not found" I just rebooted manually and after booting the screens displays "optimizing system storage and aplications... this will take 10 min"
Now I am back in business but what is the difference with 5.04 version ?

Not sure if my anti virus blocked it but I downloaded the all in one zip twice and I didn't get the script file when I extracted the files to sdcard. I then downloaded the script.zip unzipped it and copied the root.sh to sdcard. In any case I am on 5.0.4 and I really appreciate your help and all your work on this root method.
No you are correct, I am repacking the all in one zip now, it was missing root.sh
I will update the OP with the new link.
*Update*
Ok repacked with root.sh and updated new link on OP
after ROOTING Nougat 32.3.A.0.376 (E6833 E6853 E6883) (E6633 E6653 E6683 ), we will still face ERROR while removing system apps, because GOOGLE has changed file system properties in Android N to READ ONLY
in order to make system directory WRITABLE, install busybox, and terminal,
type these lines and enter one by one in #terminal
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
ORRR
Code:
su
busybox mount -o rw,remount,rw /system
-----------
What???
Why ??? I still can not write anything on the SYSTEM partition
I have full ROOT access and everything , no reboot or error issue !!
Please share if you find any solution to that

Mee too unable to write on system
download terminal on google play
open terminal
write "su" command and give root permission
then you will see "#"
after that, write this command:
Code:
echo 0 > /sys/kernel/security/sony_ric/enable
then you write this command:
Code:
mount -o rw,remount /system
if you see "#" again, it worked
but if you see "mount: Operation not permitted" it has not, sorry

I did what @serajr described here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xp...-kernel-dm-t3301605/post70595975#post70595975
works like a charm, system always writable!
Can any of you share here your perfectly rooted working kernel for Z5 E6683 DSDS ????

i found a workaround and it goes
installing busybox
installing terminal
and writing following codes
Code:
su
'to give terminal root access
busybox mount -o rw,remount /system
later using ROOT APP REMOVER i manage to remove all bloatware!

@serajr workaround was fo when rootkernel4.51 wasn't able to support Nougat kernel
however if you follow carefully, the lines mentioned
Code:
on post-fs
export LD_PRELOAD libNimsWrap.so:libdrmfix.so
and
Code:
write /sys/kernel/security/sony_ric/enable 0
will switchoff SONYRIC and will fix DRM
the issue is NOT sony RIC,
Google in general with or without any security/rootaccess changed the system folder properties from default Writable in <+ 6.01 Android version to READABLE ONLY from android 7.xx
so when i followed the both method of altering file via notepad++ in the ramdisk folder using N kernel and rootkernel version4.5, I ended up having fully root system with READLY ONLY ACCESS to /system partition and i could only switchoff the apps but can't remove!

I also think the issue is not the RIC but something to do with the Nougat filesystem itself.
I can delete all the files and folders with any file managers I like but like after 1 sec they all reappear as nothing ever happened to them !!!
How strange is that ??
It shows file sizes when I delete them and take times to delete the folders with , say for 500MB
but they still reappear after just 1 refresh or 1 sec.
I cant figure it out at all for the sake of my sanity --- why the hell this is happening ????

@bungadudu @chinmoy32
I followed bungadudu-s steps and it worked i can change permissions and prove it with link i provided.
And chenges, yes they stick after reboot and i can rename files allso, but:
after reboot i have to repeat this steps if i want to change something elsewhere, old changes do stick aroind though
I deletet phone to 0 mb in twrp, flashed AU nougat .372 with flashtool, rebooted into twrp, flashed zip file provided in link, then flashed supersu in link and rebooted, no custom kernel used
Next i will try to copy modified thermal files now and see if they stick after reboot and if kernel aduitor uses them, see you later
Observations:
-i changed permissions from file /system/build.prop and changed lcd density to 320 and i have bootloop
working on how to boot it up...

&
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=en
later i opened terminal and ran those commands
later i installed System App remover
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp&hl=en
granted it SU rights and removed HANGOUTS and GOOGLE MOVIES etc
It seems to work to some extend but if you want to go tweak it up, kablaaam

I just clean install 372 and patched the kernel once again .................
tried the terminal commands ---- both commands were successful (without any errors )
but still the deleted apps and the edited files came back to normal as before
I did not manage to delete anny apps as my phone crashed before, i am glad you get commands to work.
oh, by the waj roomtoolbox is great as you can make shortcuts of the commands and then you klik it one after another and you get rid of the typing
example (first shortcut command depends of busybox install folder i think)
1.st shortcut "cd /su"
2.nd shortcut "su"
3.rd shortcut "echo 0 > /sys/kernel/security/sony_ric/enable"
4.th shortcut "mount -o rw,remount /system"
that way some people can do this quick and you dont need to remember commands, and you can experiment quicker.
sorry i dont know howto annything else for now

I just managed to restart my phone successfully after changing the LCD density to 320 [I also use this value since always ]
But then I carefully just deleted 1 single app and booom--- boot loop
PS. i used root explorer to just click mount as R/W and then do anything to system partition --
Great you magaged it, and yes 320 seems so right.
And i asume there is no way to break bootloop?...other than reflashing?
I had trouble afterwards on downgrading to.253, 3x times error on start, even after reseting " power & + " and couple of full wipes in twrp.
I had to flash lineage from twrp and boot it up and only then flashtool succeeded pushing. 253.
This nougat will be fun i see
If there is something to try tell me i will flash it once more tonight, otherways i can do it on weekends
Oh i did not tell, i managed to copy modified thermal files with no error and then changed lcd density so i can not 100% tell which caused bootlop, since i did not reboot in between...

[GUIDE][7.1.1] Making The System Half-Writable & Convert The Apps To Be System-Apps
Okay. This is my first guide. My English isnt that so good. I tried something for my phone. I thought maybe it will helps you too.
HERE IS MY EASY GUIDE FOR UNINSTALL SYSTEM-APPS ON NOUGAT 7.1.1 VERSION 34.3.A.0.244 (AND ALSO MAKE THE SYSTEM HALF-WRITABLE?)(I DONT KNOW MUCH THESE SUBJECTS SORRY)
-Requires
- Version 34.3.A.0.244
- Magisked
- TWRPed
Note: Here is my TWRP and Magisking Guide Here Here Here
Installation
1. First Install
a. Android Terminal
b. Busybox By Meefik
2. Open Busybox and Install.
3. Open The Terminal Emulator. Its just like this
Code:
F5121:/ $
and type "su" just like this (NOT "Su", just "su" with little S)
Code:
F5121:/ $ su
press okay (on your keyboard)
Now this dollar symbol changed the like this #
Code:
F5121:/ #
That was First Step of terminal. Now the second step, type this command carefully
Code:
busybox mount -o rw,remount,rw /system
rw,remount,rw
-These are not dots, These are virgules.(commas)
Type and enter. If it doesnt give any error message just like this "mount: '/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system'->'/system': Device or resource busy" or something, congrats you did.
-Now you can delete your system-apps using Link2SD.
-But you cant still convert the u-apps to system-apps using Link2SD!
If you want convert user-apps to system-apps, use Root Explorer.
- User-apps located at root/data/app
- So cut the folder (wanted to convert system-app) from data/app
- Paste to root/system/app
- Restart The Phone
- I know this is manual guide for converting apps but it simple and easy.
(When some apps converted, maybe doesnt work. You have been warned.)
+thanks for the SoNyek for post
+commands from YasuHamed. Thanks. His guide is here
