So I'm new to Motoblur, but not Android phones.
At the moment I have two Gmail accounts and a Facebook account linked to my Motoblur account. As a result, I have ALL my contacts from all of those accounts in my contact lists, even though I have a "Cell Contacts" list under one of my Gmail accounts.
On my Milestone/Droid, I could select this group from Contacts > Menu, but apparently here I cannot. Any attempt at deleting all my contacts won't let me delete my primary Gmail account, saying other apps are using it. This is leading to frustration. Using Motorola Phone Tools won't let me delete Facebook contacts, as it says they were imported by a third party source.
Am I screwed here? Any solutions?
download Contact Remover from the market and you can delete all or selected contacts in one swoop.

But won't that just make them come back when my contacts re-sync?

make it so it doesn't sync contacts?
When you delete contacts you don't want they do not come back (I've done this a couple of times) I also went in and liked all contacts that belong together to make it less messy

I know there must be a setting for this but for the life of me I don't seem to be able to find it. I had to wipe my phone and flash it again today. Now when I go to make a call, it is not just showing my contacts that I sync with my pc but it is also showing my facebook contacts. Keep in mind this is in the phone app and not in the people app. How can I stop this from happening? I am on the fresh 2.1.2 rom.
In the address book, click menu, then view.
Assuming that you have your facebook contacts syncs checked, go to menu, settings, accounts and sync, and uncheck facebook sync. You should be good to go.
Dave I still see my facebook contacts in the phone app how about you OP?

Try removing the facebook account altogether in manage account section (within the account and sync settings). That worked for me.
In the people app I have only the phone contacts selected. Where I see the facebook contacts is if I am in the phone app and I start scrolling through the list from the phone app or if I create a shortcut that is Direct Dial. In those 2 cases it shows the facebook contacts eventhough in the address book the google and facebook contacts are not checked.

What got rid of my facebook contacts is if you are looking at the main screen, you go to menu, then settings, then accounts and sync. If you have facebook at all in that menu, remove it completely. None of my facebook contacts comes up any more if I'm in the people menu or phone menu at all.
That's all I know.

This worked for me also, now what i cant figure out is how to link the contacts in my people app, to facebook. I dont want hundreds of contacts in my phone when i dont give a rats @ss and dont plan on contacting them....
Syncing the contacts also sucks when you text. it list all the fb contacts in there....
While cleaning up my contact list from transitioning from my old blackberry, I was trying to add contacts to specific groups (family, friends, work, etc). However, when in the contacts app, I click on groups at the top, click on a group, then tap Add Member, which takes me to a blank screen that says No contacts.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Going to gmail and editing my contacts' groups on my computer doesn't change it on my phone.
Yep. I have the same problem and so do a lot of other people from what I've heard. Haven't found a way to fix this yet. The only workaround I've found is add a new contact to your phone with the same name and link it with your existing contact.
There are two ways to fix this. One is to create at least 1 "dummy" contact for each category. THEN you can manually move contacts to categories correctly, though this is very tedious...
Or, you can use an app. Look for GROUPY in the market. This will allow you to reassign all contacts to the groups you desire.
I think found out the issue. You can't put the contacts that are from your google account into groups, they have to be contacts stored on the phone. This is just stupid, and I can't find a way to copy all of my contacts to the phone.
I tried out Groupy as you suggested, masterotaku, and it doesn't seem to do what I'm looking for.
I was able to move all my google (and facebook, and twitter, and phone stored) contacts to categories with Groupy, so I guess I don't understand what you mean...
What this app appears to be doing is creating phone stored contacts that link to the existing sync accounts (google, facebook, myspace, twitter in my case). I've been able to categorize all of these contacts seamlessly with Groupy. Took me a couple of minutes to un-mess the whole affair.

Groupy puts your contacts into a folder on your home screen. What I'm looking for is a way to get my contacts (all of which are either from my google account or facebook account) into groups inside the Contacts app on the Vibrant, which you can see on the pic I attached I took of the groups screen in the app itself. It appears you can only do that using contacts that are stored on the phone itself.

And I'm telling you that this app does precisely that.....All of my contacts are in the Contacts app's categories. I've since removed Twitter and Myspace contacts from the contact sync because it was entirely too many lol.
Groupy creates phone stored contacts and links them to their existing sync groups...notice the contact in the second snapshot..it's linked to the google and facebook sync's. Groupy does this....
I'm thinking you've downloaded some other app. search for "com.kigate.groupy" This app has NOTHING to do with putting contacts in a folder on the home screen.

I see why I didn't notice. I searched for Groupy, and downloaded Groupie. lol
Thanks a bunch, GROUPY is doing exactly what you said.
Hi,
I'm a bit annoyed by the way the Galaxy S works with Contacts:
All contacts are synced to Gmail instead of My Contacts
Gmail Groups are not synced, all Gmail contacts are in one group
No easy way to convert phone contacts to Google contacts or to merge contacts into a google contact
Essentially, I want to use GMail exclusively to manage contacts and have all of them synced between GMail and the phone.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to achieve this, or maybe there is a better Contacts app out there?
This is not SGS issue, but the Android platform has been designed in the way that it's cloud computing centralised, in this case, Android phone is just the "client", you still need to maintain your contact in Gmail (web).
I tried delete a GMail contact in the phone, but that action will not delete the Gmail contact in Gmail server, sadly.
I've searched for solutions and found that the first two issues are solved on some phones, but that the Samsung Galaxy does not have the option to change the sync behaviour.
I want to maintain my contacts in GMail, but the problem is that the phone does not respect the GMail groups and it syncs "All contact", which means everyone I ever sent a mail. It should sync "My contacts", which only contains Contacts I created in GMail.
I hoped that there is maybe an alternative contacts app that does what I want.

I was also annoyed by that fact. But fortunately you can select to display only contacts with phone numbers associated in the contacts
application.
Just hit menu button while showing the list of contacts -> Display options -> only contacts with phones.
This at least solved my major issue with the google synching. Nice: typeahead in the gmail app still works for all people you ever sent a mail.

I have tried Contacts Evolved in the Market. It is a littly buggy, not even sure if it is actively supported. But it does display Gmail contact groups, segregated in tabs.
The actual syncing is still being done by the brain dead Samsung Contacts app, which cannot be uninstalled. It apparently does download the groups data element from Gmail contacts, but fails to do anything with it.
When I tried jp3 2.2 firmware the google groups showed, looks like it will be fixed in the 2.2 update.
Thanks for the answers. Displaying only contacts with phone numbers helps, and if the group thing is fixed in Froyo, thats alright for me.
Now I only need to convert my phone contacts to Google contacts, there should be an easy options like Phone to SIM and vice versa, but I could not find it. Looks like I may have to do it by hand.
This is like the only bad thing for me. Do more people confirm that it is fixed in Froyo?
I have the facebook application syncing with my contact data.
When I pull up my contacts and look under the linked accounts, each user has 5 linked accounts.
How is this possible? Is this a glitch?
The only other contact sync I have is Google.
same here.. when I look, there are five icons "linked" one google, one facebook, and THREE little green icons (WTF are those?)

Yes, that is exactly what I have too. Very annoying.
I have noticed this issue as well. In my accounts and sync settings I somehow have two facebook accounts, which I think was caused by the last upgrade to the facebook app.
Unsyncing and/or deleting one of the facebook accounts solved the problem.
I am also showing lots of account sync icons in my contacts. Thought maybe I just did something wrong. If deleting them and then syncing them worked for you I'm going to try it and see what I come up with.

Happens on mine too. If you set up your Facebook account from the Accounts and Sync settings, then you won't have any problems with multiple linked accounts. When you use the Facebook Android app and widget and login, it'll ask you if you want to sync your contacts and calendars. That's where I saw that all the duplicate linked accounts appear.
The big problem I've seen is that either way, if you go to your contacts and try to access their Facebook page it will only open your profile and not go to their page.
Kind of sucks.

I get that too! Now because I have multiple links to each contact, I have 5 links to facebook profiles under each contact. Each time I click on any of them, it simply takes me to my own page. Great...
I Just double checks a few of mine and it shows 3 right now but I think that's because I have it showing on specific accounts. I have a Google, Facebook, and unknown account listed per person. The unknown one is the one I don't get. I can also see their recent updates, pics, and profile pics again. Idk wtf happened lol.

Yep, I meant to edit my post with how I got rid of them but because I'm a n00b here I get limited to one post every 5 minutes including editing :\
The way I found to get rid of the duplicate contacts is having to go into the Accounts and Sync settings and delete the Facebook Android account. If you're using the Facebook widget that will also log you out of it. You can then log back in using the widget or app and make sure to uncheck the contacts sync so that way it doesn't sync at all (especially since your phone already is doing so if you added your account using the Accounts and Sync setting). Reason I wanted to get rid of them is when you access your contacts through something like adding a new contact from an unknown text message, it pulls up all the synced contacts that are connected with your phone (duplicate entries stored on your phone/sim/facebook account(s)/twitter/etc)
On my Galaxy S3, when I ran the Facebook app for the first time and signed in, it popped up a screen asking if I wanted to sync contacts and I could choose to sync all contacts, just the contacts that were already on my phone, or no contacts at all.
I installed the Facebook app on my Nexus 7 and that screen doesn't appear. When I logged in for the first time, it just went to the regular status updates page.
If I go into Settings - Accounts, and click on my Facebook account, there's a check mark next to Contacts for them to be synced. Also, if I go into the People app's settings and go to "Contacts to display" my Facebook account is listed there and I have it set to display all contacts, but none of my Facebook contacts are listed.
Any idea how I can get this to work? Thanks.
Haxsync!

You need an app like HaxSync or a custom rom that has Facebook sync baked into it.
Nexus devices don't have it stock apparently because of Google and Facebook dispute over the API or something its the same on Gnex and Nexus S
Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried HaxSync, but unfortunately it doesn't do what I want.
HaxSync pulls down Facebook info for the contacts that already exist on my phone, but that's all it does. What I want to do is add all of my Facebook contacts to the people app, even if they're not listed on my phone already.
Go into the HaxSync account in settings, click Preferences, Contact Settings, and uncheck "Existing Contacts Only" ..you may need to delete the account and re-add it to force it
Exactly! ^
The only reason I use haxsync is for photos for contacts. It does its job flawlessly.
