Fix for XXJVK Google Maps Rotation issue - Galaxy S I9000 General

This is to avoid confusion about Google maps and Earth rotation feature.
Others report that their Maps and Earth apps do not rotate at all when they upgraded their ROM to XXJVK.
First, rotation gesture is quite different from other devices or versions.
To rotate, place two fingers, one on top of the other, then move horizontally along the screen.
If that didn't work, check Google Maps' version:
Go to Settings >> Applications >> Manage Applications >> All tab
Find Maps in the list and check version number.
If version is 5.0 or any version less than 5.2, then rotation is not possible without hacking
system's multitouch file.
Now go to Market and download latest version, 5.2.1.
*Some countries cannot download the latest version,
here is a link of the apk file of Maps 5.2.1:

How to install (for rooted devices only, credit to abhi0n0nakul):
abhi0n0nakul said:
INSTRUCTIONS:
download and extract the .apk
1. install titanium backup.
2. in titanium backup, go to apps and wipe data for maps(i.e official maps).
the mod wont work if data is not wiped..
3. after wiping data, you can also clear cache. so that nothing of original maps is there..
4. now uninstall the maps using titanium backup .
5. you may perform a reboot (though worked for me without reboot).
6. now install the moded maps.
7. again you may try reboot if not working (worked for me without reboot)
and you are done....

Or you can try this alternative (for those who want the circular gesture):
*Warning: This might change your phone's multitouch implementation,
not just in the Maps application as the update will modify files in the /system/ folder.
But overall, in my experience, multitouch is somewhat much responsive with this fix.
Not just on Maps but also on other apps like gingerbread keyboard, as others also reported.
Please say thanks to nedoo:

It seems that samsung forgot to tell android 2.3.3 that our phone is multi-touch!
Maybe this is a google/market thing and the market is confused as to what type of phone we have with jvk. Perhaps the multi-touch update comes via system app updates like maps depending on the phone model.
Really there is only the nexus 1 and S running 2.3.3 till JVK arrived and its not official yet so I reckon Google/Market thinks our phone is a N1 and thus updated the multi-touch scrip accordingly... Phew like my theoy? LOL!

I would just like to add that there was another rotation method in the maps found in the original jvk firmware different to the one used previously and not at all Intuitive.
Many people might not have known how it works and concluded that rotation simply didn't work when in fact it did. Here's how it works:
Place two fingers together on the screen one ABOVE the other and sweep in an arc.
Not sure why this method replaced the older and better one. Please confirm if a market update changes back to the original

I am using the latest official Maps (5.2.1) och my XXJVK (non-rooted) and this is the way to rotate it. Just pinch your fingers together on top of each other and sweep in an arc, as you said.
The old system is better, but this is actually a Maps feature and not a bug in the JVK.

Hi! i'm on JVK stock too, confirm that rotation works, simply change input mode.
I describe like, make a circle with two parallel finger
The old one was really more intuitive, maybe there was some problem with non wanted rotation when you try to zoom..so they change...
bye!

Ahh thank you nadoo, I have yet to work out how to post files from my phone... Xda app? Fail! Phone, browser? Fail! I rarely use my computer lol!
This update from nadooo will revert rotation back to the older more intuitive method... Thanks again nadooo

Thanks guys for your feedback. Will add it then to the first post.

If the 2 finger vertically swipe is the new default then I think we should all give maps one star and bad reviews.
I have 5.2.1 on xxjvk and I cannot use the normal twisting rotation which was awesome in many iphone bashing ways, including the two salute to 3D.
Only thing works is the vertical two finger thing which is awkward to get the exact rotation you want or to rotate smoothly.
1 star incoming...

Ahh! See this change coincidentally came just as I flashed jvk so I thought it was related to jvk only.
I'm guessing google will change it back cos they will get heat for it!
Edit:, is it jvk only? Perhaps google maps thinks our phone with jvk is a nexus 1? Hmmmm running theory
For now

Yes I also think that this should be enabled (included) by default, seems like that it "thinks" Galaxy S has optical or trackball navigation like some HTC models (N1...).
This is present with Gingerbread only JV1, JVK...hope that next iteration will deal with this...

From what I can tell, it's like this:
Samsung forgot to add the android.hardware.touchscreen.multitouch.distinct.xml file - which is present in JS8 (that's a ROM I have on my laptop* and checked) so the phone *thinks* there is no distinct multi-touch, and that it has the crappy "multi-touch" that desire/nexus one etc have. For them, they have to use the two finger arc gesture because it'll get messed up using the normal gestures when the axis swap.

I think it could be signature.
So in order to apply this update on GB you need to fix permissions, most CWM does this by default, if not do it manualy

Try to clear it and reboot twice. If it still fails, do the alternative method as pointed out by nedooo

You dont need the map apk. Install maps off the market and then apply nadooo's zip to enable multi-touch rotation.

AT&T users should check this out as I *think* this should solve the data connectivity, reception issues. Also this one is slim and fast because this rom is "very vanilla/virgin" compare to current AT&T's leak Froyo.
Spent a few hours putting them together, checking out the extra Bell's apps, testing them... I was amazed how fast this thing runs compare to the i9000 release. 850Mhz is on by defaults and phone calls now do not produce a buzzing noise.

Hello. Do we have the issues with wired headsets? Thank you.

It's not compatible with any of the skins and themes I've tried. They all have odd quirks with button text. Like for example the "Clear" button in the notifications panel. It just has random characters on most themes.
Just little stuff like that. I see lots of little improvements scattered all over the place though. And Media apps like the video player seem to have better CPU focus than on other ROM's. Where other ROM's would stutter with sound or have an occasional stutter in video, this ROM played flawlessly.
I'll let you know if I see anymore.

no problem here in San francisco/oakland area. i locked to 850mhz 3G, the phone rings fine!
Wired headset will ALWAYS have issues until one of the dev could figure out how to work with the codec.
Most themes out there will not work because I noticed the file size of framework-res.apk is quite a bit different than JP5/JPM/JPO ones. I didn't look into the changes but if you load the themes from other framework, the phone will looks very funny.
My phone works great in Vancouver, can receive calls/texts.
I suppose this build should be 95% similar to Doc's i9000m, just that this one is dedicated for North America phones to resolve modem issues. I would NOT assume this is the final release, but 2.2 for Bell is suppose to be due soon.
DG is making a new ROM based off I9000UGJK3 too, let's see what he is cooking later today.
How is gps with this? Please don't get upset at me for asking...I am just curious how it compares to other roms out there right now.

Instructions
Recommended:
1. Backup all of your apps, photos, etc. Use Titanium Backup (on the market) for your apps. Put the TitaniumBackup folder on your computer, along with your photos and such.
2. Using Odin, flash back to stock JF6. If your phone has 3-button problems use this Odin. This mostly effects 1008 phones (check under your battery).
3. Using Odin, Master Clear THIS DELETES EVERYTHING ON YOUR PHONE, INCLUDING THE INTERNAL SD CARD.
4. Root your phone. I use this one click.
5. Install Rom Manager from the market. Using this, install Clockwork Mod recovery.
1. Transfer Assonance_x.x.zip to your SD Card.
2. Reboot into Clockwork Mod recovery and flash Assonance_x.x.zip
3. Following installation, reboot the phone.
4. It will say "Config files differ". Choose "Yes, with backup and restore". Wait for it to complete.
5. Allow the phone to boot. This will take an abnormally long time. Somewhere between 2 and 4 minutes. The dots will not stop for any period longer than 10 seconds.
6. Allow the phone to establish a data connection. This will take longer than normal, and should be done within a minute or two.
7. Restore apps with Titanium Backup, add your photos, etc.

Stock launcher... I'm guessing it'll look sort of like the stock launcher?
Not sure I want to be one of the first guinea pigs, but if it looks good I'll give it a whirl.
Out of curiosity, does this include the Android Keyboard?
I will be watching this I am a huge fan of your work!

I cant wait to get back @ my computer tomorrow!!
Thanks MikeyMike!!
Patiently waiting...
Well could have said you had this coming...TODAY!!! I just redid build 19 of your other ROM and now might was well do this one since I didn't even restore my old apps yet.
I guess I talk this bad boy for a spin.
PS Just curious why you didn't base it on the new Bell ROM? Just wonder.
Can't wait for this!!
MikeyMike - does the sns sync in this work? One thing I'm not liking about Vibrant is it still has issues.
I'm debating trying this out need any help? I've been teaching myself a lot more about recompiling apks and zipaligning.
(i finally have a day off from work!)

Jk3 modem seems to be a lot more stable without the need to enable 850mhz band (it's already enabled), is that the new modem you're talking about.
JPO modem was a pain in the butt.

Ack... Charging phone now... been itching for this
JM9 already included with AOSP icons..this is sooo tempting.
I'll give it a run.....I will report back tomorrow and let you know my day goes.
holy ****, this looks amazing! would the rom run properly if i were to remove the normal email app(who doesn't use gmail) and the task manager
I like what you've included in this rom and its' visual. Any bugs like wired headset not working?
I will try this later
Just flashed this, Working smooth!

Before the Best Stock 2.2 froyo rom gets lost...

For last 4 days I am using ZSJPE with Speedmod K10I
This is after having used JPO, DDJPA with all sorts of combinations.
Just as I was expecting that this is going to be a hit JPU hijacked the scene.
But ZSJPE vs JPU
ZSJPE is stock while JPU is leaked and still buggy
ZSJPE has everything fixed just like JPU
ZSJPE is completely bug free, and simply flys, JPU is having few bugs being reported
Kies connects, and no problem seeing internal and external storage on PC mac
Issues fixed in ZSJPE
GPS
Battery Life
Second Capital in Swype
Missing alphabets in contacts
Lag (nearly gone), quadrant without lagfix was over 1000.
As I researched, The XML files on apps from /data/data/<appname>/shared_prefs/ to /dbdata/databases/<appname>/shared_prefs/
According to Kalpik in post in thread JPU post 688 this could be the reason for the faster ROM.
Installation for trouble free and possibly best performance.
Backup apps through apps like titanium/mybackup
factory reset or full wipe.
go into download mode and flash using Odin, only PDA single file, NO PIT, no repartition required.
allow full boot and let full initialization, you will have to keep pressing next in setup wizard because it is in east asian language,
go to setttings>>location (from Square icon with A)>>Select 1st option>>select english.
shutdown
boot into download mode
flash speedmod kernel K10i
reboot
reboot into recovery
flash "simple root" installs super user and busybox.
flash 2e recovery
reboot
boot into recovery
apply lagfix (optional, as even without lagfix this rom flies), apply tweaks the top 4
reboot completely>>shutdown>>charge till full>>boot into recovery>>advanced CWM>>Clear battery stats
reboot and enjoy the NEW improved SGS experiance.
Do not expect quadrant scores over 1400-1600, but absolutely amazing phone.
Hope you will be able to find the ZSJPE and Speedmod Kernel in the forum.
Go Get It...
ROM (Thanks to clubtech for original release http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861446&highlight=zsjpe

ZSJPE is as fast and smooth as XXJPU. ZSJPE has not given me single bug over last 5 days of rigorous use (rather misuse) to my surprise. ZSJPE is official HongKong ROM available through kies as well.
XXJPU is leaked ROM and various bugs are being reported. Worst of them is the poorly optimized browser, which is being reported to show checkerboard pattern while zooming in or out.
Hope I have clarified the point.

I will try to attach the pics ASAP, for now I would say
Idle use, like overnight with only 2G and no data it consume 1% in 7-8 hrs
Day time idle use with wifi on, sync on, screen off, no calling, I get 1/2% to 1% per hr
With browser 3G or angry bird it dropped 15%-20% per hour.
I do not like to compare the total time on with light/moderate/heavy use because these are subjective and relative terms and often confuse.
Please Wipe Battery stats after Flashing and go through full charge discharge cycle at least twice before you should Assess or Comment on the battery performance.
I use this ROM too, Just amazing. Never had any trouble with it.
My steps to install were:
1 - Backup Apps with mybackup.
2 - Odin only PDA, no repartition.
3 - Factory Reset (+ Deleted/Formatted Everything)
4 - Language English.
5 - Changed input method to Samsung Keypad to get rid of Chinese.
6 - Flash Speedmod Kernel K10i
7 - SuperOneClickv1.5.5
8 - Restore Apps & Data.
Enjoy a really good phone.
Circle battery mod
(Credit @evermick)
(Remember THIS IS ODEXED ROM, so not all .zip would work.
The one that gets downloaded from online kitchen is to be modified by replacing AndroidManifest.xml and META-INF from the Original framework-res.apk into the cooked framework-res.apk for it to work. So be sure what you are doing.)
The attached here is ready to be flashed straight through recovery.
Attached also is the original framework-res.apk which may be flashed through recovery to revert.
I am not sure whether it matters but I flashed it on virgin (fresh flash) ROM.
thx mate gonna try this firmware. gonna reparation with pit 512 as my phone has a virus.
You are welcome?
This post would have served its purpose if few users are able to reap the benefit.

Steps may wary, but I emphasize to reboot after installs. Aim was to give slightly elaborate method for safe install for people like me.LOL.
No need for step Super one click. For root, speed mod kernel recovery had option for root.
I prefer to use least no of tools to modify system ' cos at times tools may conflict.

Though it may be updated through kies, I would recommend you to follow the steps in first post. This would ensure 'clean' install which would ensure trouble free performance. Through kies it would not result in full wipe and may bring with it 'errors' to your new system.
Think about it.
So this is also a 2.2.1 release like JPU? Someone post a screenshot that proves it.

Please Note
I have no where suggested that this is 2.2.1.
The title clearly says "best 2.2 rom".
Then you really shouldn't claim it's everything jpu is, and bug free at that. JPU is 2.2.1. And the jpu bugs you are reporting have not been a problem for me, I'm on docs ultra slim.

relax dude, hes simply stating an opinion and comparison is clearly given on first page..if the jpu bugs havent affected you they might have affected others, so i think its nice that there is another option out there.

Lol, it was not my intention to flame the guy, and I was pretty neutral in my wording, but it has to be allowed to clarify statements that are stated categorically and simply aren't correct. Even if bugs are a problem for some people, this thread gives the impression that they are pretty universal for the jpu, and that just isn't so. Also the fact that this isn't 2.2.1 is a fair thing to point out, if you ask me.

People often refer to Froyo as 2.2 regardless of whether it's 2.2 or 2.2.1. I figured it was only 2.2, but the fact that you were making direct comparisons to JPU had me wondering.
Hows the GPS? Locking time and accuracy?
Whats the difference between 2.2.1 and 2.2. anyways.... more speed?

Updated FW release for FROYO (DDJP4 <----- DDJP2)

I am using a tweaked version of DDJP2 on my Galaxy 3. My Kies just showed a firmware update version:-
PDA:JP4/PHONE:JP2/CSC:JP4
Edit: Indeed this the latest Froyo update for G3 users in India. Early reviews suggest this is a bugfix; camera doesnt crash, Swype is working.
To answer my own question :
It is the latest build for India. BaseBand is DDJP2 but build is DDJP4. No information on the changelog though
Looks like Samsung India released new update!!
Check for camera bug. Is it there or not??
Check languages are available in swype or not????
If anyone has updated to this firmware, please share your experiences here...
Anyone who has tried this please tell us that is swype working
Maybe samsung has released a new UPADTE.ZIP(MAYBE) and if it is so we can try to get recovery working on stock roms(cwm is a lot better but stock helps!)

No camera bug
I could swype "Hello"
I5801DDJP4.7z (96.73 MB)
NVKDM4DCK7 on multiupload
wat about sound distorsion issue..? i.e. if u lock/unlock screen while listening to music, sound is disturbed.
Can you Give me link to download
please can you give a download link cuz KIES as usual is not updating it so asking...
And you mentioned that you could type "Hello" using swype so after that did it failed to work and what all change did you notice
Sorry got the link as you had given it above
Please tell about the performance improvement
Link to flash : http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G7K7OPTJ
In the stock upgrade as given in the link multiupload.com/NVKDM4DCK7:
1) Swype is still working like it should. It looks like an improvement over previous Indian release
2) Camera is also working. I snapped few pics on click as well as by holding and focusing and the camera didn't crash
3) I didn't check for sound distortion issue on stock firmware
I rooted it, added live wallpaper and flashed fugumod 2.4b3 800Mhz (featured):
Sound is working (checked after fugumod 2.4b3 install), I played MP3 in default soundplayer and locked the screen with power off button, nothing specific my ear could sense.
Overall it seems like a bugfix release for Indian users

Check camera after enabling gps and location setting.
It usually used to crash when location services or gps is on.
I.e. The geotagging was causing the crash.
Check for this version and report back.
Thanx

No Idea ;-)
I've customized a lot over stock now
Root (SuperOneClickv1.5.5-ShortFuse)
deodexed app and framework (xUltimate-v2.2.6 by xeudoxus)
Busybox 1.18.4 (Stephen - Stericson)
JIT (ARMV-DEV-TEAM)
Live Wallpapers (ali_alex & slumpolo tutorial on xda forums)
fugumod 2.4 Beta 3 800 Mhz (featured edition) - fugumod-i5800 project
app2sd v2 (kyrillos13)
Patch for Malware (DroidDreamKiller by Chris Ravenscroft)
The thing that I'm using now: multiupload.com/EK8VWJSAOP
if you want to flash it, be careful with fs.convert/fs.current and /etc/init.d/S01_app2sd-v2
if the combination is not right it doesn't work
Or to be safe just flash over the stock kernel
After very extensive use i charge my phone every night anyway
Just added
5-lockscreen
and zipalign
Will upload the rom soon..
This update is fairly stable rom
I modded the andorid.policy.jar and framework.jar for 5-lockscreen and power menu & it is working
and only one more post to go
