I am in a really bad spot, my Shift is stuck in a boot loop.
Before this happened, I booted into recovery, made a new backup, and then booted back up, mounted the sd card, and copied a previous backup into the folder. Rebooted into recovery and restored the backup from a couple weeks ago that I just copied over.
Now the phone wont boot, I get a buzz and the white HTC screen, then black, then back to the starting buzz again and the white HTC screen again, then back to recovery.
I've searched through this forum, but I didn't see anything that sounded like a similar problem. What could have happened?
I would just RUU back to factory and re-root, but I can't get the phone booted to a high enough state for the RUU to work.
Any ideas? I really need to get this figured out before work tomorrow.
I have tried flashing the latest version of ClockworkMod Recovery, that didn't seem to help
I was on 2.5.1.8 and now CWM is 3.0.1.4
I tried reflashing the engineering hboot, that didn't work either
I can't get a logcat
I've also tried reflashing the original hboot, I see the switch to S-OFF, but that doesn't change the bootloop
Have I bricked my phone?!!
How could restoring a nandroid do that?!!
I was finally able to run the RUU using fastboot, I'll update once it completes
Edit: Ok, so using Fastboot and running the RUU I was able to get back to a working bootable state.
This time I'm going to try out the guide from the CM wiki http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Evo_Shift_4G:_Full_Update_Guide

IF you could get into fastboot you could have accessed recovery. Could you not do anything there?

Nope, I would get put into recovery on every boot attempt, and couldn't get past it.
Also, I think there are some errors in the steps over on the CM wiki, so I don't recommend anyone try that process until it gets corrected.

With s off and fastboot working, and it booting to recovery why didn't you just wipe then reflash?

Tried that multiple times, always got kicked back to recovery. Even tried wiping each partition individually. Had to RUU to factory then start over, thankfully I had just finished a complete Titanium Backup of my system, so everything was waiting for me on my sd card.

Yeah I'm not sure you know what recovery is....recovery is clockwork 3.0.1.4 which clears data cache makes backups and flashes roms themes mods tweaks....bootloader is the white screen that shows s-off and if you use the volume keys and power button you could have booted into recovery and wiped your data cache and dalvik cache than fresh flash instead of unrooting

right now neither, because I've just finished up re-rooting after RUU
I was picking reboot system, and it would go through the start of a boot cycle, but then die prior to the 4G boot animation starting and then start back over but kick me back into recovery.

I posted this on DamageLess' page in hopes that he could help me, but I haven't gotten a reply yet. I figure someone on this forum can help me.. Just read the paragraph and you'll know my problem...
Hey man, I really need your help
I tried using your new DCUpdater (which is a fantastic idea btw) and i'm having a major issue. My phone won't boot. At first I was having problems with SuperUser, but I fixed that by enabling USB debugging, then unplugging the phone, then using the Updater. That worked. But when I tried to reboot the phone, it wouldn't boot. I wiped, restored to my most recent backup, and it still won't boot. I wiped, manually installed your new ROM, and tried to reboot again, and that's where I am right now. It had the Quietly brilliant screen, flashed the sprint logo screen, and now it's back to the Quietly brilliant screen. I think it's in an endless boot, because as I was typing this, the screen flashed grey for a second, then it flashed the sprint logo, and now it's back to quietly brilliant. Please please PLEASE get back to me asap, because I don't know what to do.

You can do what the 2nd guy said..
Wipe everything.. Then dont flash or nandroid restore.. JUST reboot your phone.
Or save all your files to your computer that are on your sdcard... Repartition your sdcard. Then reflash the rom and move your stuff back.

I just did a factory reset, wiped my Dalvik cache, and wiped my sc card option thingy. I went straight from there to rebooting my phone. I'll say something if it boots now
i'd say wipe settings, wipe ext, wipe dalvik, flash rom, boot. if that doesn't work, wipe again and again then boot.

Won't boot in what way? Can you get into fastboot and/or recovery? Since you're asking about CWM, I'm assuming you can get into it.
If you did a Nandroid backup (the main point of CWM for me), you could try just restoring it. If you didn't, I'd try a wipe all settings and then reboot. You should be able to get back to a virgin state on the main OS that way.
I can get into it, the problem is i erase all data on my phone. Thanks in advance!
???
Is there any way i can get my phone back up and running restoring everything from clockworkmod?

I'm still confused what your problem is.
You say the phone won't boot, but then you talk about erased data.
What exactly did you do to the phone? What was the last few things you did before you "broke" it?
What happens when you try to boot the phone (ie., it's powered off and you press the power button)? How far in the boot process does it go?
If your problem is that the phone boots but all your data is gone, there's no way to get back unless it auto-syncs down from Google, or you used a backup program like Titanium, or you made a nandroid backup in CWM.
If you made a nandroid, you should just be able to boot into CWM, select backup and restore and then restore your backup.
This is what happened....
I tried to replace my fonts in system that are supposed to work on a different phone. Then when i tried to boot up the phone was stuck on the silver google logo. Now, after that i went into clock work recovery and formated everything in the mounts and storage menu. After reinstalling the phones boot img, my phone freezes at the google logo. I can still get into the clockworkmod recovery. I never backed it up, but tried to use a nandroid someone posted online but i get a md5 mismatch.
Again, thank you for all your help!

Known issue. There is a thread in the Development section(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884499). The OTA "broke root."
Ouch. Now I understand.
In the future, always make a nandroid backup before messing around with things, easiest way to recover.
I see you're looking for help in this thread. Maybe they can help you.
You could also try flashing Doc's or Paul's roms also in that section.

The custom rom? No, you just go into recovery, wipe/factory reset, install from SD card, then navigate to where you put the .zip on the SD card.
I see you did try the 2.3.1 NAND backup in the development section. Try downloading it again on your PC, unzip it, then place the new folder on the clockworkmod's backup folder on your SD card. Again, do not rename it.

Be warned that if you do get the NAND to restore, you may lose clockwork recovery. I know I did when I first tried to use it.
Don't panic though, because you can fastboot flash clockwork back on from the bootloader.

Reboot into boot loader. (Power button and hold volume down)
Then select recovery. It will boot into cw, and you can restore or reflash.
I tried that, didn't work, My nandroid would load just fine and then nothing.. I just loaded the old rom on and it works..

Simply put the .zip file for whatever rom you want on the SD and flash like you have been. That simple. Once you wipe, its like a clean slate so you can flash whatever you want.
Thanks, Maybe there was something wrong with my Nandroid back and it would restore my previous save.. So it doesn't matter what kernal/rom or version of clockwork I have as long as I wipe data & reset correct?

If you're stuck at Nexus logo, you're in no way bricked. Worst case is your ROM can't boot, which is easily fixable. Boot to fastboot mode (Power button+vol down), and via your toolkit you can factory reset a new stock rom. Or possibly flash another pre-rooted rom. As long as you can get to fastboot mode, you're all good.
thanks so much man...how long does the initial boot take after rooting installing cwm busy box and all? i did the 1 click all...

Honestly, I don't know. Sometimes initial boot can take up to 5 minutes, but if it's longer than that, changes are something is not working. You could try going to recovery and factory reset and clear caches once more, and reboot again. Else I would try re-flashing stock rom. I haven't tried 1-click all method, I did it one single step at a time...
wow dude clearing cache and a factory reset worked...i love you lol

Flash all you want
Make a complete nandroid backup first, so you can always revert back to a working rom, just in case.
As long as you stick with flashing N4 roms on the N4 (!!) and follow instructions, you should be good.
Today and after deciding to simply restart my Nexus 6P, it booted into TWRP menu, I tried to reboot again, but no luck. can someone please help?
is there a way to get off the TWRP menu and boot my phone normally?
Note: The root used to simply work fine for about a month now.

I will have to call you out here buddy. If you have indeed tried to flash all factory images, you won't even have TWRP in the first place.
Go to this wonderful guide by the wonderful @Heisenberg, and scroll down to "10. How To Flash The Factory Images (And Return To Stock)". You will find very clear instruction on how to return your phone to its factory stock state. This will most likely get rid of the problems you're facing.
