The final post that needs to be made about updating. - Atrix 4G General

Ok look I am brand new to Android, not even a week old. Everyone on the iPhone forums prefers to be babied (just like Apple treats them) so everything is very very easy and simple. Anything done can be easily undone. What I didn't realize when I came to this side, was that you can't just start modding away with no regard for what could happen or what you could need in the future. With that said, I have done the following mods:
Adeo modded ROM
Webtop hack
Root
Titanium for freezing
Now obviously I can unfreeze everything I have frozen to at least get all the stock apps back. And the Root program I used has a convenient "unRoot" option. But what about the other two? I realize that there are instructions for removing the Webtop hack, but they are extremely confusing and it looks as if I have to run a program from my comp and paste in a bunch of code to have it fixed. This looks scary.
Also, I was totally unaware that I couldn't just mod the crap out of my phone and just restore it if something fails. I realize that there is a "stock sbf" available to flash to, but people have complained that their wifi breaks. SCARY! All I (and many other noobs on here) want to do, is take away either the Adeo mod or webtop mod, or both, so that we can do the OTA update. Can someone do us a favor and lay this out for us step by step this ONE time and we promise to be more aware of what we are doing in the future?
On another note I read that the update was recalled. Does this mean that the update is no longer even available OTA?

Flashing the SBF only breaks wifi on unlocked phones that flash 1.5.2 so you don't need to worry there. Read the instructions on how to flash to 1.2.6 and make sure you have all the drivers installed before you do, flash back to 1.2.6 use aroot then run the script to retain root then run OTA (I believe it was recalled then released again as I think it was Moto that tweeted about it today) finish running ratain root script and you'll be golden running an update that fixed things I didn't even know were wrong lol

Flashing sbf doesn't break wifi on unlocked phones, totally false. If you flash 1.5.2 you can't use the 5.0 Ghz frequency due to a bug (don't know if it exists on 1.5.7)
I have an unlocked phone and flashed 1.5.2 and works fine. If yours fails, you have a defective phone or are using 5.0 ghz, exchange it or test 1.5.7.

I flashed back to 1.2.6 then did the aroot, script, ota, re-root, everything works perfectly.
Not an unlocked phone, but wifi a&g work perfectly.
my other phone is a harley!

WHEW!
This thing I BLAZING fast!! The notification bar, slide to unlock, fingerprint scanner, actually the whole UI is totally improved. Everything is instat now. I ran quadrant free and came up with these scores:

2733
Almost certain I scored 1900 before the update. Can't remember

If you have a gmail account logged into the phone your contacts will remain. Your photos are stored in a folder that gets untouched by flashes. All of your settings and apps will have to be redone. I wouldn't use titanium backup.
Even though Android claims to have built in app backup and restoring, I've yet to get it to work. Some people say they restore and login to the market and apps come flying back onto the phone. This is not my experience.

Just came up with a score of 2813 in Quadrant Free without the update applied. First run was 2481, second run right after was 2812, third run was 2813.
Wifi and Bluetooth were off, used Advanced Task Killer to quit unnecessary apps, and phone was plugged into wall with a fully charged battery (Green LED was lit).

[Q] Rooted Vibrant + T-Mobile Update = Brick?

You could try making a Nandroid and then restoring only the data portion.
It all depends on what the OTA update did to your phone.
Well I'm stuck on the Vibrant Logo screen. Can you tell me how to do that? just restore the data portion?

I had the same problem. I had OCLF on my phone and I had un-lag-fixed and unrooted with it in anticipation of the JI6 update. When I ran the OTA, it bricked my phone anyway. I had to use Odin to get back to stock and that sounds like what you need to do too.
When I Odin'd back to stock, I still had all my videos, photos, and a bunch of files and stuff for apps, but I still needed to reinstall all the apps and redo all the settings/configurations.
oh man cause I used AK Notepad and basically my life is on that. Will those be erased too? and texts?

Odin from stock wipes out the existing applications (and replaces all the bloatware too), so they needed to be reinstalled. Once reinstalled from Market, and reinstalling Titanium Backup, I was able to restore from the /sdcard the backups I had made previously.
There was some work involved with getting the system back to what I had, but I didn't lose any data.

Are you guys just really impatient or something with the update. Mine stayed on the Vibrant screen for a while, but I just let it go and it worked out just fine. Mine was rooted and with the Ryan Lag fix.
I guess there is always the possibility that individual experiences can differ.

Use Backup to gmail to save your phone log and sms. Use tb or my backup to save your files and data. Odin to eb13 (get .exe file from samsung, install on windows, find .tar file in folder) and do your restores. Restoring data across different firmware is sometimes eventful.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
as Klownin says, it's probably the asphalt demo missing. Why they have it set to remove that app when it's known to cause issues in the future with updates is beyond me. Should be left there for the user to back it up and remove it much like all the other crap is left!
99.999% sure the missing demo is your issue, and it can be fixed
To be fair, having clockworkmod in the one-click also breaks updates. If the updates are going to be broken already, why not remove useless files?
Get the cwm flashable eb13 from this thread and flash it with clockworkmod. It will update you from di18->eb13. You don't need to reinstall asphalt. You won't lose your apps and settings.

[Q] 3.70 Failing on unrevoked Evo

Hi,
I'm a little bit late to the game.
I've just tried loading the 3.70 patch to my unrevoked Evo and it is failing. It downloads, reboots, I get a progress bar that makes it about a quarter of the way through, and I get the android guy with the triangle of doom.
I pull my battery and am up and running again, but still with that patch to push.
Any thoughts?
Rob
When you say 3.70 patch do you mean the OTA? If so you can't do that. It will not install if you have a custom recovery, which unrevoked installs. It also won't work if you've deleted any stock apps. The easiest option would be to just flash a custom ROM that is based off the current OTA, which is most of them.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
That seems counter to what I've heard before, and what happened with the last OTA.
Yes, this is the OTA I'm wanting to get applied.
GoodAndEvo seems to imply it can accept it just fine?
I'm really not a huge fan of the stock rom and am thinking about going the Cynogen route (I don't use Sense), but am wary of losing all of my configuration, text messages (backed up to gmail), etc.
Well what you are reading is either incorrect or you are misinterpreting it. Even unrevokeds website says you need to reflash a stock recovery.
You will lose everything if you go to cyanogen. Just backup your apps and whatnot before hand to make it as painless as possible.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You mean I won't lose everything if I do the backup/restore route, right?
Well you will have to redo your system settings because you cant restore them across ROMs but everything else can be backed up and restored.

1.83 GingerBlur question

So I updated to GB3 a few days ago and excitedly checked *#*#4636#*#* to see if HSUPA was turned on in my area yet. Sadly it still had only HSDPA. Today my wife did the OTA and she is on HSPA here and I am not. So even though I am showing android 2.2.2 and on the 1.8.3 software I didn't get the radio change.
Should I SBF back, do the OTA then reinstall GB? Would I lose tenfars in an sbf reload?

Flash 4.1.26 sbf, then update to 4.1.57 through Moto, then update to 4.1.83 OTA.
Root with Gingerbreak (will probably wipe your internal SDcard), Gladenable to enable sideloading, install CWM Recovery, flash kennethpenn's deodexed 4.1.83, root again with Gingerbreak (root lost when installing deodexed files).
Yea. I reboot a few times. Speeds are still low. I was also hoping to avoid the whole wipe/reload. Oh well.
Next question. My friend on Verizon has his apps synced to his gmail account, any time he has to reload his apps auto download. When I reload I always have to redownload everything. Any ideas on that?

A500 updated to 3.2 somehow, now it barely works!

I don't know how it got updated, but it did. I wasn't running a custom rom or kernel or anything. It was just a stock a500.
Well now most of my apps force close, can't connect to Xda forums, wallpapers don't work, wifi barely works, etc.

Was it running 3.0 or 3.1 when you got it? If so it should have prompted you and asked you if you wanted to update.
The easiest thing, especially if you are new to the world of android, would be to exchange it at Best Buy. There are ways of fixing it, but that would involve reverting back to an older honeycomb version, rooting it and possibly installing a custom ROM.
Edit - It appears you are not new the the Android world. My bad...... You probably know a lot more than I do!

First of all, please remove any task killers or "battery savers" you're using. These are pretty terrible for any android OS newer than 2.1. Try to stay away from them. You can get away with "passive" ones like as an example, Watchdog. But nothing that actively shuts down processes and such.
This isn't supposed to be possible, but do you happen to have any apps auto-moving other apps to the microSD card, or are you using any apps to do this manually? By design I don't think that can even be done inside of Honeycomb, but I'm aware that some apps 'force it'. If you do, move any and all apps on the microSD card back to the internal storage of the A500 - then remove the offending 'mover' app.
Stupid question, but have to tried powering the tablet off and back on? If not, let's try that first, shall we?
Second thing - if it's still force closing when it comes back up, try using the reset on the side of the unit. What I want is basically to have the tablet hard reset (the equivalent of removing the battery for a few seconds).
To do this put something in the little reset hole for 10 seconds or so while the unit is on, so you can see it reboot. Once it turns off you can remove the item from the hole.
Still force closing apps? Alrighty then, moving on:
If you are using a completely stock A500 (and yes, I did read that you said you are), then just factory reset it and you should be alright. It won't downgrade to 3.1, but why would you want it to? 3.2 is working great for many of us.
I'd love to get to the bottom of your force closes. But alas, that may be just a bit much to deal with for a new user so go ahead and do the factory reset.
To do a factory reset, go to Settings and then Privacy and the option is in there. I would remove the microSD if you have one inserted (it's not necessary, but just to rule anything out).
Since it's only a week old hopefully you don't have too many apps or settings invested in the tablet.
So to summarize:
1. Uninstall any and all task killers or battery savers
2a. Make sure you don't have any programs automatically moving apps to the microsd. Move any apps you have installed to the microSD back to the internal storage
2b. Remove the microSD card
3. Power cycle the device (then 4 if 3 doesn't work)
4. Hard reset the device (then 5 if 4 doesn't work)
5. Factory reset the device
If you factory reset and STILL get force closes when you're back up then unfortunately there's something wrong with either the core software (maybe a bad update) or the hardware. Return it in that case.
Good Luck. Please let me know how it goes.
I'm not new to Android, just new to this device.
I never use task killers.
No app2sd stuff.
Rebooted multiple times.
I've removed the SD card and even tried a different one.

Exactly! Currently there is no root for 3.2 on our device. Hence having to downgrade to 3.1, root, and install a pre-rooted 3.2 ROM. IMHO the stock based 3.2 ROMs are the most stable, and trouble free.
If you're not new to Android you should have no problem following the procedure.

Althought it is easier to do it with a computer (to get the files). You can download them straight to your tab, transfer the files over to your external SD card and away you go! I've installed a few ROMS without the help of my computer. Afterall, that's part of the reason why I got a Honeycomb tab, so I wouldn't have to rely on a computer unlike other "tablets" on the market LOL!

Maybe it would help if you remove all apps that require root access, FCs may be caused by them since you don't have root anymore. Actually you don't need root anymore to mount NTFS hdds - 3.2 took care for that. The one thing I need root now is to map the keys of my USB keyboard to my liking. Probably I'll flash a custom kernel when I feel the need for OC but still it runs everything I throw at it.

I've got my hdd formatted to fat32 but my tablet still doesn't see it. I really wish it could, that's why I want drive mount to work so badly. I'm not sure why it's not working though. It did before, but now that there are files on it won't. If I can fix that, I'm fine waiting for ICS.

so are you stuck with the stock bootloader? or can you download CWM and flash an alternate recovery? if you can do that (does that apk require root access??? I honestly do not know???) then there are all the stock and rooted OS's here on XDA somewere? if CWM does then cant you still get one of the older OS's (rename it update.zip) and flash it with the stock recovery image? if any of this is simplistic I appologize just trying to help, I should probably stay out of it and let the experts help...
I'm stuck with the stock bootloader. I never got a chance to flash a recovery.
