Coming from HTC Desire & HTC Desire HD to Samsung Galaxy S 2, there is only one think i realize. Whatever HTC lacks in hardware, it more than makes up for it in software. HTC Sync works flawlessly. You want to convert into usb? no problem. Integration with contacts? works out of the box. I am stuck here for at least 2 hrs trying to make my new mobile to sync with Kies, with no luck. Before it turned into a USB, now not even that. (and yes i know about the debugging option). Same with software, linking is not as efficient, TW not as customizable, resulting in downloading 3rd party apps to do the things that you took for granted with HTC. So far, excluding hardware, I am really disappointed with my new purchase :/
I also came across from a Desire - HTC Sync was a pile of crap, just like Kies when it's not working. When Kies works, it's waay better, not that I bother using that either - everything just syncs to my Google account(s).
As for Sense vs TW, I admit the contacts linking/integration is far better in Sense, but as for one being more "customisable" than the other, nonsense - neither interface is particularly customisable, other than widgets, which I think you're referring to. Sense had some nice ones included, but TW has too. The only one I miss from Sense is the combined clock/weather one, but you can get something which looks almost as good using the digital clock and Accuweather widgets.
That's what I first though when I exchanged my desire for a galaxy s about a year ago. You'll get used to and when you do, you will start to appreciate how good the galaxy s2 is in the other areas.
I did miss sence after switching but now I don't look back especially with the super amoled screen!
i had a desire and desire z
hate sense
i love the new touchwiz. not even using go launcher any more
Always try to find a way to sync over a google services. nothing is so easy an comfortable than syncing with google on an android.
i just love how it shows all my podcasts when i download google listen and i'm good to go. i know its simple, but it just works

tw gives closest to stock android experience. Thank god samsung don't use anything like sense or blur.
Sense is just too heavy for me.

i honestly hate sense ui , its a ram hog , its a battery drainer , its more complex then it needs to be and to be honest for me it is just a waste of time
give me a plain android o/s or touchwiz anyday
i actually prefer go launcher to any of them but sense ui for me is just annoying overkill with a few nice weather animations
if i wanted sense ui i would have bought the sensastion but i wanted a phone that was based on power not one based on a pretty o/s that is a resource hog
why not stop neing disapointed and just sell the sgs2 and buy a sensation?? job done you can then be a happy person again
I love TW 4 and I use the stock launcher as well ...however it would be awesome to see Sense on this beautiful display - The eyecandy that Sense has is great

I had sense on my Nexus One and while I tried it for a while I simply found it to be too heavily modded. Obviously it works for some but TW has been a pleasant, more stock experience so far (Coming from launcher pro). If I ever go back to HTC I'll be making sure an AOSP based rom is available before hand
Sense is something like UI overhaul of whole android. You may like it, but it is not android experience at all (except you can launch android apps).
TW is also too heavy for me, but except weird mail app it leaves android logic in place.
Black fact is, that you will have hard times to find anyone calling himself a "touchwiz hater", but you can definitely find a lot of Sense haters (take a look on any HTC related forum).
This makes your argumentation problematic and thereby very subjective, but I understand that not everyone have same feeling about HTC -> Sammy migration as me.
//
Edit
Because we are on android, you can try other UI called MIUI. I found it really nice and polished. There are some features I don't like, but its worth try IMO.

+1 i don't necessarily hate HTC Sense but definitely better off without it and everything you've said is spot on.
OP said himself it's eye candy and already added battery drain, RAM hogger by other user.
Meaningless thread IMO.

Some devs are working on a sense but there is very little progress yet but I am with you coming from a Desire running a Sense 2.1-3.0 mix, TW is quite a disappointment
I always had an HTC before my GS2, and I definitely prefer TouchWiz.

Ill b happy with sense 2.1. Not 3. I don't care what sensation owners tell you, rooted or not, the sensation lags worse than my aging og droid.
Meh... TW4 is okay. Pretty standard rom. Not too heavily modified like Sense, but not too bare like stock, just in the middle. Firstly,I love Sense's eye candy . I'm not a big fan of TW4. Using MIUI and that was the best thing I've ever done.

Sensation may lag, but the evo 3D is speed demon. I love sense so much, its so clean and useful for me. I love the notification bar layout, the polished widgets, the awesome text selection quick look up utility, and just how everything is so intergrated.
I had the epic 4g galaxy S phone and i hated it. Touchwiz on it was absolutely awful for me. Such an ugly ui on froyo.
Now with that said,i am still going to be switching to sprints version of the galaxy s2 come September 16th in hopes that touchwiz has improved since its last iteration.
Sense and TouchWiz both are very nice imho. Sense is SO integrated and clean and a perfected shot at a well made Android experience. TouchWiz is also nice, and I love TW 4.0. I have the launcher for whenever I feel like having a TouchWiz... touch... (lol) to my phone. Sense's widgets, themed overlay, etc., make it a very good experience. But WAY too heavy and cumbersome.
And whoever said Sensations lag... you must be extremely dense. Both the Sensation and EVO 3D are so blazing fast it's unbelievable. And on AOSP ROMs? I hit 4500 on quad easy. Sense is what makes the phone lag, not the phone itself.
looks too much like iOS, any1 else feel the same way?
it does and i said the same thing but iv been running it for a month now, switching off to new sense roms but within a hour im back it works way to good. All the sense roms out battery life sucks, it lags, and even after switching to a new kernel seems something breaks like wifi.
Personally I like savzen I agree that sense eats up battery life but I enjoy the Widgets but I can do without

MIUI is ios if ios was designed really, really well. It may "simply" look the same, but it isn't remotely close. I highly recommend you try it before you bash it for not having an app drawer.

I wasn't thrilled with the lack of the app drawer but that's easily fixed by loading another launcher. When I was using MIUI it was Launcher Pro.
MIUI looks like iOS after a fresh flash, but it doesn't have to. That's what I love most about it, I can theme every aspect of it. I use Alt Drawer, so I have an app drawer.
Plus it's smooth, has a lot of neat apps, and is different than any other rom I've seen. I switched to it because I was bored with CM7 and didn't like Sense. That was in April and I haven't looked back.

i tried that, but the more apps i put in, the laggier it got for some reason, and it was really cramped, kind of annoying to try to find an app lol
I am on the dislike MIUI bandwagon too. I'm not going to bash it as I agree it has some sick features. The killer for me was the app drawer and 4g. I think if I gave it more than a day I could customize it to my liking but I just like Sense and all the Sense features.
I thought about maybe a custom launcher but then I thought "why change from a Sense rom that is native to my HTC phone that guarantees GPS ect to work by default and install one that isn't just to put a launcher over it and defeat the purpose"
I got bored with Sense launcher and Rosie so I currently have ADW ex installed and still have flawless gps, the dialer I like, everything synced how I like, email app I like apps where I want ect... right from the start.
I could do that with MIUI or CM but then I have to install DialerOne, GoSMS and a few other things to get what I like. I can't stand any of the AOSP dialer and sms layouts.
If I didn't live in such a 4g rich area I would probably give MIUI the turn it deserves but that is a killer before I start. It's also what's really irking me about the new Sense 3.5 Roms. Runny~Bliss(i think) hybrid looks gorgeous to me..... but I'll wait it out.
Miui isn't a bad rom at all. At first I refuse to use it because it did remind me of my old iPhone. But ended up trying it and loving it.
I get better battery life with miui compared to sense. Plus there is alot of built in apps and features to miui that is bad ass. And who can forget all the sweet customizing you can do to it. For example just did this setup below a few minutes ago...
One somewhat downside for me is the no 4G but then again that only effects me when I go visit my parents up state. That's when I backup Miui and switch to a sense Rom problem solved haha.

MIUI is AMAZING. I love it. And the theming? NO ROM beats it! Its fantastic the way you can make your phone look. The only reason why I won run it, is because of the laggyness of the keyboard.
Here is my current setup of MIUI, and it damn sure doesn't look like iOS to me...
BTW, my GPS snaps perfectly, syncing all 8 SATS in about a millisecond. I really don't get why people make comments without knowing how to do something.
Maybe it does look a bit like iOS. But I don't care, it's still the smoothest and best ROM I've flashed on my Evo. (and particularly this week's build is quite stable so far).

Not sure if that was directed to my gps comment but either way...... It's a know fact that aosp based roms are more subject to gps issue and have had numerous "fixes" posted to resolve.
It's not a matter of what I KNOW how to do it what i WANT to deal with. I never said aosp or miui were bad by any means. Just not my cup.
Posted a long time ago in the future.
I used to think the same. Now, I have customized Miui to my liking by creating my own app drawer and installing a new theme via the built in theme manager. It is very fast, very advanced, highly customizable and finally pulled me away from Sense (though I do have two Sense Roms in my Boot Manager slots).

I really like Sense as well but can see where those who hate it are coming from. I gave MIUI a try and much prefer the Sense 3.5 widgets, and all their colorful glory. I've used Sense since it was TouchFlo, so I've always had a place in my heart for it. CM7, while a purists form of Android, is too simplistic and also was too much work to setup to get it functioning like I wanted (my fault, as I really wanted Sense back).
To each their own...
I have tried all the types of ROMs and imho cm7 is the best and the most androidish.
Also I do like the newer sense ROMs(read 3.5).
Everything is about personal opinion and how you use your phone.
just my 2 cents.
cm7 is amazing, so fast and clean, i'd like to use it regulary. it took my breath away when i tried it out. but i'm missing the stock camera, news & weather widget, contact integration. and there were some smaller things i don't remember, all in all it was clean and fast, but did not have all the functionality of sense-roms.
To be fair, i didnt try out CM for some time and maybe i should have get used to it longer. I only used it 3 weeks or so.
i've never tried miui, but i absolutely love the miui-look.
so i'm using a no-sense ARHD with adw launcher ex with miui-icons and i think i'ts the best of all worlds.

ARHD..i had probs wid it...if u use it for a while..you get around 150mb free ram and if u multi task at times..apps get crashed...sense roms are too heavily ram based that is why most htc phones have memory of 700mb...
i'm changing a rom from MIUI, CM, and HTC No Sense, and the Sense itself..
for me, sense is still the best, and now i'm using the ARHD 6.1.5...
Until recently I was hooked on Sense. Now I use blackice which is cm7-like and I like it. There are three things I missed at the beginning: 1/ wheather-clock 2/ news widget and 3/ flip to silence the phone. Now I use the accuweather widget and the ics clock (eight cells combined, so the same as htc's), I wrote a custom news widget for the feed I read and still miss the flip-to-silence (but not that much).
At the end of the day they both have their pros and cons. And MIUI should be shot in the back of it's neck for threason .
i've tried cm7, miui, and a variety of sense roms. cm was spartan but functional. miui (i tried freshly squeezed) was great but it (and cm7) were missing something that makes me stay on sense: the calendar widget. i've searched for a good calendar widget so that i could stay on miui, but i haven't found one as good as the htc one.
i also like the htc lockscreen. i know widgetlocker can do it, but i don't want to run another program just for that...
CM9 all the way
I vote ICS ftw running beta 2 as a daily works ok aside from the listed bugs.
it is too early to flash ICS unless you're a dev and want to work on it for dev purposes...not a good idea to use it for everyday use...
Does anyone know a good sense rom with good amount of free ram?

I guess you could use runny4 with a script to free up Ram. You'll have around 270 MB ram after booting but of course, then script seems to kill the launcher sometimes....especially after using a resource heavy app. It's kinda annoying!
I've been using black ice ROM for a week now and I don't think I'll be coming back to sense, ever(except maybe to take a look at sense 4.0 when it comes out)! For me, it was just about finding the right widgets to replace the sense widgets. I've found quite a few excellent replacements in the market.
I'm still searching for something which can perfectly replace friendstream. I've tried pretty much everything there is...none of them work as well as friendstream did. Anyone got any ideas?

which theme you're using from theme chooser? using sense lockscreen app? which clock widget you're using...
For anyone who is missing the HTC weather wiget from Sense while they are on CM give Beautiful Widgets a try.
And I'm using the ICS beta. Sure there is no camera, you need to set up your data connection manually. The gallery force closes, but installing something like QuickPic gets round that. But all in all it is good enough for me to run day to day.

MIUI is pretty amazing, you dont have to use the default launcher you can install anyone you like but the theme engine is by far the best, it beats the Cyanogenmod theme engine. it can theme everything and i really mean everything from fonts to lockscreen to boot sound.

Try "android pro widgets" as a replacement for friend stream. Perfectly fits for me.
All roms have their advantages and disadvantages...I love them all ^^
What bothers me on CM and MIUI is the Camera.
The DHD camera is really good and it is a pity that it is not really supported at both roms.
I am currently using ICS ... Although I have no camera but this rom is amazing
I think the only thing that keeps me going on sense is the notification bar. I'm a big fan of how sense's pull down has a recent apps section an is split into two sections one for recent things and the other for quick settings.
I mean, I understand that you can get recent apps by long pressing home but the notification bar is in like most non full screen apps, pulling it down is simple.
I used to be hard core CM but then i started going back to Sense just for the way the notifications are set up. Perhaps if there is a notification bar recent apps plugin or fix for non Sense Roms, i would leave it.
So, by now One has reached lot of people and lot of people have been using it for a while.
I am not new to sense. My last sense phone was Droid DNA, so I have used Sense 4 and had love hate relationship with Sense back from HTC Hero days.
Now coming to Sense 5. What do you guys think. This is suppose to be very light weight, improved version of Sense, and to some extent it is.
But personally I cant seem to live with it day in and out. Blinkfeed annoys me. Plain and simple. Sources there are simply not what I read. And it is very intrusive and cant be disabled while keeping rest of the Sense. The App drawer........................ Less I talk about it the better. That is a vack step in my book. But I guess this can be subjective. But lot of wasted space and the painful vertical scrolling which Google threw out of door with ICS makes the comeback.
Even though I did not always like Sense completely on my previous HTC devices, I had never replaced the Sense before completely and forever on any of those devices. I tried desensing DNA before but I quickly went back to Sense ROM.
But Sense 5, I dont know. I wont be able to live with it as it is now. I have installed Nova Launcher on ARHD ROM. Using AOSP ROM will not be an option because I dont want to lose the critical camera functionality including the metering and HDR and even Zoe.
Personally I cant fatham how HTC design and UI department thought this is a big improvement over Sense 4. At this point I would take Sense 4 on One over current Sense 5.
But as we all know different people think differently. And hence this thread to discuss and see what others think of Sense 5.

I agree with most everything you said. Sense 5 almost feels like a beta version. Blinkfeed would be less annoying if it had more options and flexibility. There are other little annoyances like weather only in 24 hour format, missing widgets, missing settings, ect. I hope there are some significant updates coming.

I actually like Sense 5!
HTC have finally got it right with Sense 5, i remember using HTC Sense a few years back and it was a resource hog and the phone was never really fluid and there was always some lag preset but Sense 5 is much different, it not only looks good but isn't a resource hog like Sense was previously.

I hate touchwiz, LG is ok but I hate the look, Sony is laggy, Motorola is close to stock but the icons are ugly.
I dont mind pure aokp but I still prefer sense.

I hope with future updates there are more options in blinkfeed. They need to let us add subreddits on blinkfeed. I would like that a lot.

not anymore... came from One X and abs loved Sense 4
I actually quite like Sense 5, too. Sorry, but I think it's a huge improvement over the bloated mess that was Sense 4 and Sense 4+, which both felt like Gingerbread-era skins which made the One XL run way slower than it should have - which you could obviously see if you installed any AOSP ROM.
Sense 5 both meshes well with the Holo style of Android, while at the same time doesn't unnecessarily bog the phone down, and it's hard for me to complain about that. The best thing I can say about Sense 5 is that it doesn't make me miss CM10.1.
Being a Nova user for very long time the Sense 5 is a very pleasant surprise. It's very fast and stable. I use it.

Sense 5 is so much cleaner and faster than 4, and the best manufacturer skin.
I have set my home screen to a different one to Blinkfeed as I'm not too bothered about it.
This is my 4th HTC Android phone, and the first one where I haven't installed GoSMS, another dialler or keyboard. I love the default look.
I occassionally use my Sensation as a backup and that feels very laggy now. Sense 4 was ok last year, but feels dated now.
Sense 5 is nice. Blinkfeed is dumb.
I switched my home screen to the middle option and used some widgets I prefer and I have blinkfeed for some news and crap when I'm bored off to the left screen now.
Maybe I'm rare but I don't have a facebook and I don't give 2 craps to knowing every little update. I just have some news on Blink along with my calendar and that's it.
If I could do this with Sense I'd give it a try (6 rows of 4 icons plus the dock row):
I love it, finally vertical scroll back in the app drawer, I really hated horizontal scroll, it made my thumb hurt and it is much harder to follow the scrolling with your eyes, it gives me a nystagmus. I use blinkfeed and it has some great potential but I wish there were more sources though the ones that are there are almost sufficient. The only things I miss from previous sense version are a find my phone and ring phone from computer and the temperature graph in weather.
Epic!
Am loving sense 5 at the moment.
The last time I used sense was on my (wait for it - Legendary) HTC Desire back in the days. I am liking the minimalist changes HTC decided to implement in this new version.Love the remote app too can control my TV setup with ease.
The amount of times I have just turn on my phone to drool on the lockscreen/homescreen. Sense 5 with this brilliant screen is too much lol.
Love Sense 5.
I like the blinkfeed concept, just not as a homescreen.
I have used:
HTC "cube" from the HTC Touch (winmo 6.0)
Manila 2d and 3d, brand name "TouchFlo", still winmo
And.......sense from winmo, then Android (old sense, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.5, 3.6, 4.0)
Of all, Sense 5 is hands down the best.
I could only ask for two things.......bring back and expand customization.
Under personalize, there used to be two options:
1. Scenes
This was fantastic, if you use your phone for work and home you could save all your home screen setup as a scene and switch back and forth. I used this lots.
2. Skins
Who doesn't like customization? I feel HTC should have expanded this, not scrapped it. Give out free developer / theme tools and let people make their own to upload to HTC hub......so much wasted potential. I used to theme for winmo. My first projects were different color and themed Manila (sense) flip clocks. Theming was easy, no hidden files, no paid tools required. The way it should be. On my old Touch, I had over 200 sense skins.
Really, these are the only two features I miss. Sense is now closer to stock, flat, and fast.

I had a nice long post written up and my Nexus 10 locked up....
In short I like it a lot... FML

The only thing I miss are since of the widgets. Used the mail and messages about.
I like Blinkfeed ALOT and use it a lot. Just wish there were a few more feeds.

Sense 5 is becoming more and more disappointing the more I use the phone.
I got rid of HTC's crappy launcher and immediately replaced it with Apex, a much better and more fully featured launcher. However, sense extends beyond there...
First there's the gallery. In short, it's horrible. I'm not sure why they decided to set my images to be sorted by 'events' by default but suffice it to say I can't find anything until I change it to gallery mode.
In addition to that, there are the battery stats. The stats don't tell you how much battery the screen is draining (why on earth would they omit that?) and only shows app usage. It just displays less info in general.
Finally I tried to share a photo over Facebook today and HTC shoved their crappy 'HTC Share' thing into my face. So I said to myself, what the hell, let's try it. Well my post/picture showed up on Facebook...minitiarized and with HTC's branding all over it. I may actually flash an AOSP rom if this stuff can't be fixed with roms and/or mods. Sense 5 is not horrible, but it's far from great.

So I sat there last night, excited as a schoolboy on Xmas eve, waiting for the first fixed GE edition ROM to be uploaded, and there it was, before my very eyes....
Downloaded, installed and setup in the blink of an eye, Vanilla Android goodness...
24 hours later in back on Sense 4.2.2, and here's MY moral of the story, HTC have made such a good job of Sense 5 and how it runs on the One, that vanilla feels boring, plain, underpowered and undertooled.
Again I say well done HTC, first time I have ever missed using a manufacturers software.

I will have to agree with you except I didn't run the ge version. I had the nexus 4 before and never rooted the thing. I feel that Samsung and HTC are doing a great job with their stock roms now that flashing stock android just feels plain.

Right there with you but only because I had a couple of random reboots and tethering is broken, but I'm sure these issues will be ironed out when we get a real rom from a shipped device.
It was supposed to read "im back on Sense on 4.2.2"
Basically if I had brought the GE version and was sat next to a friend with the Sense 5 version, I would feel a little let down with my purchase. Im so happy we have such great devs and community here because I was seriously considering selling my non-GE and buying the GE, now i have basically had it for 24 hours, I won't be bothering.
If the ir blaster worked in aosp I would be using it over sense, I bought this phone for the hardware, completely planning on flashing an aosp Rom as soon as there was one I liked. To be honest though, I did kind of fall head over heels for sense after I got it themed a little but I still have all intentions to flash stock android on it when everything works right. I will miss my BlinkFeed and my sense widgets. Lol

It's funny. I keep reading blog and forum posts calling this this thing a failure and bashing HTC and Samsung for this Google Edition stuff and the way they are handling it.
Maybe I'll come off as an apologist, but seriously... really? I've owned both the S4 and the One. I prefer the one, but they are both great phones, (Even with Touchwiz the S4 is a good machine).
I always find myself in the same boat... take a stock current version Sense (Or Touchwiz) Rom and debloat and desense it as much as possible. I always try and get the AOSP lockscreen, MMS, and Email working (I hate the manufacturer apps usually). At the end of the day I try really really really hard to get an AOSP experience on the manufacturers frameworks for stability.
Yesterday I installed the GPe leak that bigxie released...and blamo...here is exactly what I've been going for. The quick setting error and tethering will be fixed...hell the leak just leaked yesterday.
This is the opposite of a failure in my eyes. This is exactly what I wanted.
Thanks HTC and Google.
Agreed with OP. I installed the GE rom last night and it feels boring and lacking now that I've used sense 5. I used to love running aosp roms but I found myself missing tethering, the IR blaster, the camera, blinkfeed... the list goes on. Sense 5 is really polished and highly funtional and the aosp camera doesn't even come close, aside from photosphere. The main benefits for me to run aosp roms in the past have been for speed and battery life, but that is no longer necessary as Android Revolution with sense 5 perfoms every bit as good, if not better.

Not baked in like it is with Sense. You can get 3rd party IR apps I have read and they will work.

The GE ROM does have the cool 4.2.2 lockscreen widget capability. Hopefully that feature comes to the Sense 5 4.2.2 ROMs. So far, 2.17 and 2.19 based firmwares don't have it enabled yet.
I downloaded the GE straight away it's very nice however I would replace with a stable pacman rom in a heartbeat.
Am going to stick with the GE for a bit though but of all the things I miss it Blinkfeed that stands out.

There will always be 1 reason for me personally why I can't use sense and that is issues it has with LCD Density (DPI), it just doesnt work right and I can't stand default densities on phones they look too big for me lol.
Overall I have to agree. I do love the smoothness and look of the GE Rom but the camera falls well short of what is capable of on Sense. A couple of things that still baffle me about vanilla android is the lack of an option to have the battery percentage built into stock as well as no drop down volume adjustment option. Sure I can use the volume rockers but it should be standard on the drop down menu. I believe we have reached a point where the manufacturer skins are just more functional than we like to give them credit for.

Actually ViperOne just got it in their new update. There is a bug where if someone calls you you have to input your password to answer. I actually don't mind cuz then no prying eyes can see who's calling or answer on my behalf

Yeah that password bug is a show stopper for me personally. TrickDroid also has has an AOSP lockscreen option with the same bug. It will be nice if/when Sense ROMs support lockscreen widgets natively so the AOSP-like lockscreen works properly.
I can haz lockscreen widgets. (With no phone call bug.)

That is..... AWWEESSOOOMEEE. i find the widgets look so much better than the AOSP widgets
I agree with the statement of the OP... sense for me is (since sense 4) the best integration with android that a Smartphone could have, thats why i leave SGS3 and change it for the HOX, and why i selected the one, GE give us the opportunity to probe that pure stock android is somewhat overrated, but do not misunderstand me, I like the pure android, I even using it right now and I gonna use it for a good time; it has its own advantages, but eventually I know I gonna return to sense...
