How should I go abount intalling intellikernel on cm7rc3 . I am a noob and do not really understand the importance of having a seperate kernel (incredikernel is supposed to be superior than the default CM7) .. would I have to do some tweaks after I flash this?
Do I need to wipe anything before I flahs this or any new kernel? is it stable?

That is for the Droid Incredible.
That is why it will not work on our phone.
You can only flash 3rd party kernels related to your phone, and your skin design. meaning you cannot flash an AOSP kernel for Sense ROM, nor a DInc kernel to a OG Droid.
But I am running CM7 RC3 ... which is AOSP.... I am a little confused.

But the Kernel you are looking at is for the Droid Incredible, not for the HTC Glacier. They are two different phones, with two different hardware packages. You must use AOSP kernels for the HTC Glacier.
Could you suggest one that you really like? and do I have to wipe anything before I flash any kernel?

Personally i suggest running the stock kernel that came with your ROM. And i will only use the kernel that comes with the ROM. The developers have built the ROM to run around that kernel. So it should work the best. I know Faux123 has built some top notch kernels....but i cannot speak first hand.

scroll down until you get to cm7 kernels and download the latest grandkin kernel! instructions are on the page =)
I use fauxs oc/uv just cause he's awesome and you can oc it to 1.8 ghz but you have to be careful when overclocking I'd suggest setting up the governers and profiles in setcpu after flashing the kernel. But no you don't need to wipe anything just boot into recovery and install

Hey y'all, I have CM7 on my Evo and tried to flash incredikernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848453 using clockwordmod rom manager. Everything seemed to go fine but now it will not get past the white htc evo 4g boot screen. How shall I proceed? I was going to just reflash CM7 but wanted to see what the 'correct' thing to do is, help please!
SOLVED, I definitely learned something new today. Kernels are phone specific haha!

Are there any reccomendations on the best custom rom for this situation?

The reason why there are so many ROMs is because there is no "best ROM"
For sense run fresh rom or dc
And flash the oc kernel on top

There were two versions of the kernel there. I found out that the Fresh and Damage version is NOT the correct version.
Well if you like stability, and your gps and accelorometer to work properly. Ie you want to be able to use geocaching programs, and exercising programs like cardiotrainer then I would choose a rom based of of the official stock rom like fresh

I am running Android 2.2
Kernel is 2.6.32.17
My question is sometimes if I want to try a new ROM i will flash it and for some reason it does not work. Is that because of the Kernel or the version or both? For instance I just tried to install Bakedsnack 1.9 and it would not load. Sorry or the dumb questions just trying to learn.
Thanks in advance for any help given.

It could be a lot of things, but what specifically isn't working? The whole thing? or just a few bugs? It could be the kernal, could have been a bad flash, you might not have wiped everything first, etc.

My guess is the stock htc kernel with baked snack requires an updated radio. After flashing the rom, flash netarchy's kernel in the same recovery session

I was wondering about the overclocking kernal for cm7. just how do i put it in. Do I have to do that when I first install or can I add it later. also does it really help. I mean is the difference really noticeable or not at all. I am still deciding if I should do it or not.
Kernels are flashed through ClockworkMod and can be flash anytime after you flash a rom. If you use the search bar you can easily find what particular kernel works for your setup.
OK, I think I found the right one but I was also wondering if I could install it when I first installed cm7. When I installed it I saw that it was searching for the kernel and for gapps but didn't find the n and skipped it. Could I install it then

CM7 has the ability to be overclocked as it sets.
settings > CM settings > performance > CPU settings.
just be extremely careful when Overclocking devices. it can takes it's toll in the long run.
and the g/apps are not kernel dependent they are ROM dependent.
OK but what do you mean by gapps are not kernal dependant

On *UNIX based devices. They have a section of the firmware called the "kernel". The kernel accepts the coding, binary and scripts from the RAM/ROM and tells the hardware how to act, what to do, and when to do it.
The g/apps have nothing to do with the kernel.
The g/apps are Google's property and cannot be included in AOSP based ROMs. Those ROMs are developed from Google's code. And developers do not have the ability to add those at will. So we must flash them after/prior (depending on he ROM) to get the Google Apps.
YES! DO IT!
for me its like day and night, it so much smoother with dals OC kernel. and yes you can flash the OC kernel any time. you can flash cm7 rc1 then OC kernel in the same boot. or you can first install cm7 to check it out for a while and then later flash the new kernel. if you planning to flash dal's 6/18 kernel, make sure to get his app NC Tweaks.

You place the over clock zip file in the root of your sd card and flash it through cwm like you would a rom or gapps. So for example you would flash cm7 then gapps then the overclock kernel.

When you move from stable cm7 to cm7 nightly the new kernel is included. However the included kernel is overclockable only to 975mhz. If you want a higher clock speed you'll have to use dals 6182011 kernel, up to 1200mhz.

I'm not following you cannot use just a Cyanogen(mod) kernel. They are built into their ROMs.

There is a Clockwork ROM Manager and a ClockworkMod Recovery image.
Together they are known as "CWM" Since one is a recovery and the other is a ROM manager.

I ment by universal just that: they work on both AOSP AND Sense.
And I apoligize for not mentioning what version: Gingerbread
The reason he's asking is because there is obviously no universal kernel that'd work for both AOSP and Sense.

Well, I suppose that you can try the Tiamat kernel. Credits go to canyiarb.
You can also try the ILWT kernel. This is what I'm using right now, I've had zero issues with it and it's blazing fast. Credits go to Tsubus.
Alternatively, there's also EliteKernel. It includes custom governors, something ILWT doesn't have. Also a great choice.) Credits go to Nik3r.
All three of the above are excellent kernels (in my opinion). You shouldn't see much of a difference between the three.

How can I backup my current kernel if I want to switch back?
Not sure, I suppose you could make a backup of your /boot partition (if you're using 4EXT Touch there's an option for this in Advanced Backup I think).
The best thing to do would be to make a nandroid of your existing installation in entirety.

Cyanogen roms have there own kernel, check in settings/about phone/ and look under 'kernel version' you'll see the name there.
If it's stock, yes it is using it's own kernel.
