New to this not sure what to do I have a Sprint Hero with the 2.1 update 1 my question can it be rooted and if so what steps do I need to also when it is rooted can it be used as a wifi hotspot like the EVO etc with good download speed or do I need to look at something else. Thanks for any help
For the rooting you'll want to check this guide.
This rom comes with a program installed, called aNetShare, wich allows you to set up a wifi hotspot.
Don't flash any rom's from this section, this is for GSM hero only.

I'm a Moto Droid user, and my brother just picked up a rooted Hero. It does work, but I need to revert it back to total stock for him.
I want him to learn the phone first, and then root it myself, so I know it's done right.
I need some basic instructions on what to do. I know more about my phone than the Hero.
So, basically, I need to make his phone exactly like it originally was out of the box.
Thanks ahead of time!

well, installing a stock rom and a hero in stock condition are two different things.
you need to install a RUU, but be carefull to chose the correct version, otherwise rooting again will be a PITA...
depending on which hero you are using....just use the htc sync and pick the ruu u want...older vers might be preferable as the newer ones are more complicated to root(specially the 2.1 that is suppose to come out soon)...as long as u pick the right rom all should be good!
in the hero android development section, the RUU Rom links choose the lowest of all the numbers. This should put it to stock 1.5 and let him upgrade without doing the goldcard rubbish
My MyTouch 3G with 3.5mm jack is still locked to Tmobile. I don't want to pay for Touchdown for Exchange capabilities and PDAnet for tethering...so want to upgrade to the latest stable ROM which seems to be CyanogenMod's Froyo ROMs.
Can I upgrade a locked phone? Do I need to do anything special before doing it?
I used to have a Touch Diamond earlier and I've used a lot of Custom ROMs - but I am new to Andriod. There are many many posts for newbies like me - but more information is just confusing me rather than helping. Can someone point me to a thread which explains the step by step procedure?
Thanks!!!
U need to root and flasha custom recovery, and mabey radio and hboot and any rom u flash must be for 32A not 32B

yes sir! you can root, flash roms and do everything even though the fone is locked to t-mobile. the only thing is, even after you do everythin you still have to use a t-mobile sim. unlocking is not related to roms, root etc. the sim lock is based only on your fone's imei.

Hi,
I have bought a brand new HTC Wildfire and am awaiting for it to be delivered. It is on Vodafone (uk).
I would like to root my phone when i get it and would appreciate your time if you could help answer some questions i have.
1) If i root my phone can i revert back if i want to? by this i mean go back to the Vodafone default, sorry don't know what they call it, basically so it's back with Vodafones custom android or whatever it is they call it.
2) I guess i will loose everything on the phone like apps etc? can i backup everything before hand?
3) I would like Android 2.2 which i believe is the latest version, by rooting the phone how would i go about then updating to Android 2.2? would i just need to check for updates from the HTC website or something?
4) I here about all these custom roms, can someone explain what these custom roms are? are they modified versions of android or something?
5) If i am able to update to Android 2.2 does that mean i can install apps on the sd card to save the memory in the phone as this would really benefit me?
6) Do i need to root the phone to install Android 2.2 on it?
Maybe i don't need to root the phone to get Android 2.2, if not does anyone have a guide on how i can do this please?
Thanks for any help and sorry if these questions have been answered before.
I did read the UnRevoked Guide which has explained things a bit and sounds the easiest way and red all the replies to.
Thanks
MR
1) Yes. You do this by finding the relevant RUU on the internet and then flashing it to your phone.
2) Rooting does not make you lose any of your apps, it just gives you more access to your phone in a way. When you install a custom ROM you can use a program like Titanium Backup to backup all your apps. Also you make a Nandroid backup of your phone that you can recover in case something goes wrong.
3) Over the air (OTA) updates of Android 2.2 will be coming before Christmas it is thought so if that is all you want you could wait. There are a few different 2.2 based ROMs available on this forum if you look through the threads. This thread lists the different ROMs with links to each thread and there are some links to guides as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822181
4) The custom ROMs are community modified versions of Android that provide something different to the stock ROM. Some of them have HTC Sense, some of them are the standard Android interface. Which one you choose all depends on what you want out of your phone. See the link above for more info.
5) Yes a feature of Android 2.2 is apps2SD. This is available in the custom ROMs.
6) If you don't want to root your phone then you can wait for the OTA update of 2.2 from Vodafone. If you don't want to wait then you will have to root your phone.
I believe those answers to your questions are correct although you could be better waiting for a more experienced member to reply. I suggest you read as much as you can about rooting and installing custom ROMs so you can make sure you are making the right decision and that you know what you are doing.
You need to be aware that rooting your phone will void your warranty.
Hi,
Thanks for replying, this has really helped answering my questions
Thanks

hi there.
i got my legend 3 days ago
i got it from some guy that used it for a while, he told me that it has installed superuser whit it the phone can run normaly, including updates, reading every simcards etc....
now i've read that for legend is released 2.2 sw, but my phone is running on 2.1-update1
and dont show me new updates when i click to check for it...
so guys plss can some of you post me here a step by step tutorial what should i do
to get my phone running on froyo or gingerbread if its possible
ty in advanced
confused android user
There's already plenty of tutorials in Development / stickies, some are not stickied, so you might have to search a bit...
As for the update, best way for you check few ROMs and install via ROM manager since you are rooted... B0.7 is particulary good one
ok i manager to install cyanogenmod 6.1 on my legend works great
btw why i cant login my acc on XDA app in phone?
you can go to the market and download Rom Manager... my preferred way in managing rom. it can download rom too ;-), if you found new rom that you want to test other than the ones found in Rom Manager. download it and put it on the root of your sd card so that its easy to look for.
eg. Blay0's B 0.7 rom found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866849
or
CM7 from here. http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=nightly&device=legend
and remember to Wipe Data and Cache if its a new ROM to avoid boot loop.
you can then use "Manage and Restore Backups" to jump between roms that you've backup or rename them to not get mix-up...
Have fun ^^
Didnt want to make a new thread but it wouldnt allow me to post in the developers section. Anyways is there any way of getting ESPT codes working in the Energy Rom for Evo there is no ESPT code support and iv tried to add the ESPT.apk from another (working) rom to the Energy zip then flash, no go. Iv also tried to use root explorer to switch out the ESPT.apk and install it again still doesnt work. The ESPT codes are vital for phones that are flashed to other carriers.I love the rom one of the best but i also need the ESPT working any help would be appreciated thanx.
