Speed up XDA Forum in browser - Xoom General

Since the app doesn't work, you've got no choice but to use the browser. However its a lag fest.
On your Xoom scroll down to the the very bottom left and change "XDA 2010" to "XDA Classic" . Makes this site much more pleasant to browse... Almost no lag at all.

i can't stand any apps for forum browsing. i like tabbed browsing, but great tip.
so what causes the slowdown? i'm making a guess that it's the text antialiasing. they must have it set to high which makes for the blurry type. any way to tweak it?

ditto, nasty yellow colors, but scrolling is so much smoother with no lag. Thanks!

Much better!

Thanks for the tip, works great.

So what is the cause of it running so slow to begin with? I mean it's great that we have a work around, but for an $800 device I expect it to be able to browse a simple website without the need for a work around to keep it from lagging.

Use any of the alternative browsers that use a different engine - which as of today are either Firefox or Opera Mobile. Both show XDA forums just fine with no lag.
(ditto for Slashdot, if you read/post comments there regularly - it also has the same trouble with stock browser)

Ugly, but changing the theme is much faster. Thanks for the tip.

Try Opera browser. This browser is really fast on the Xoom! Also for the XDA forums it is a great browser. Almost no lags.

What web browser do you use?

Hey guys, I use Opera mobile web browser and I love how simple it is and how it looks. However, I noticed how several websites are cramped to only one side making it almost impossible to browse normally.
I have tried Dolphine browser but there is just too much in and and when I swipe side to side instead of the page, the side bars pop up. It gets really annoying.
I wanted to see what you guys general use for web browsing.

I use Dolphin Browser, though I know what you mean about the sidebar. I've found that if you scroll up/down first, then to the side, the sidebar doesn't show up as often.
I was using firefox but I switched back to the stock browser.the stock one runs much smoother.
Used Dolphin for the longest but just went back to stock. Like the simple clean interface and the side to side scrolling on dolphin just started to drive me nuts.
Stock. Tried Opera and Dolphin but went back to stock.

If you never use the side bars in Dolphin, you can disable the swiping side to side action in the settings. It helps make Dolphin more usable.
I'm using Dolphin HD, although I do find navigating around a page to be buggy sometimes.

Skyfire. So far it's my favorite but I'll be interested in trying firefox once it's a bit further along.
I have tried out several with the notification bar hide feature because of the screen burn in issues. For me dolphin hd can be really slow. Anybody that's using it without issues change any of the settings to get it to run properly?

lol my train of thought was that the browser was made to support flash but since it doesnt have its still trying to load it anyway which would cause lag but im not sure how browsers operate so i couldnt say for sure.
i think it has something to do with android's browser.. my old n1 is also laggy when browsing xda.. but my first generation snapdragon wp7 scrolls XDA forum smooth and fast.
Try this, to see if it improves performance of the browser... seems fine on my xoom.

this is a known issue and hopefully someone is working on it.
Tapatalk is basically the same app and works fine
i have the same and I paid for the app.......is anybody actively fixing this?
I have been using the XDA app since day 1. The only thing I have found I have to do is exit fully when done. I.e. I hit the back button till the app closes. If I leave it open for any significant time in the background it either gets stuck on the splash or whatever page I was on last. At that stage I force close and reopen it.

Wow. Really? So THAT'S why it crashes on tablets? I had always assumed it had something to do with the resolution being much higher than on a phone, but since you say the Verizon XOOM works, that blows that theory out of the water... I am going to see if my superiors have any idea why this is happening or if they can contact Tapatalk to fix the problem.
Fyi this problem does not exist on tapatalk.. has to do with something xda does differently

Also goes along with what I've heard in the past... From what I've read, Tapatalk's standard client used to have this issue, but then it was fixed. Perhaps the XDA app can be rebased to the newer Tapatalk.
I have had no FC's on my WiFi only Canadian MZ604.
What I do have, though, is a weird scrolling issue on certain threads where the text will copy itself onto every pixel it crosses until I stop scrolling and the screen refreshes.
I did note that it seems to happen mostly with hyperlinked text. Another possibility is text that has had it's color changed. Will have to play around with it some more to confirm this.
i just use the browser now. Its no big deal with the bigger screen.
It would FC on my Nook Color as well, which is wifi only. I was hoping for a better experience once I got my Xoom wifi (I also got the paid app) but it behaves exactly the same: as soon as I log in it FCs.

XDA Rendering

Is it just me or has the page rendering on XDA gone bonkers when viewing from the Tablet?
I changed over to the rather ugly XDA Classic theme that fixes the rendering issue but what's the deal with page rendering on the XDA 2010 theme when viewing from the Tab?
Did something change in the css as I am getting this issue on ALL custom ROMS..

Man, am I glad I saw this thread. Thought I was going nuts!
Yeah thanks for starting the thread. I was just about to spend who knows how much time trying to figure out which app was killing all my memory.

Dolphin is good in writing, but too unreliable. Tabs didn't load a lot of the time it didn't even show up at all. Had to keep changing the current from desktop to phone just so i could post messages on different sites....the list goes on.
Any way to back up the bookmarks like Dolphin? I installed it when the stock browser was fc-ing on bookmarks and found the import/export feature makes life easier.
People should really give boat browser a chance. Very good speedy browser! :good:
completely agree with boat browser. I don't understand, why is it so low profile, I have tried other popular ones like Opera, Dolphin (& mini), stock, etc, but Boat seems to be the best of the lot
