Hello all,
I have installed Root Explorer for the purposes of deleting all the unneeded apps that exist on my Xoom. Is there a document that explains where I should be looking for said apps, and how do I delete them successfully. I have varying degrees of success in this, and wanted to make sure I do it right the first time out.
Thanks,
Steve

All the apps are in system/app/. You have to have root and there is no backups so be careful.

I've never seen a document. But it's not hard to figure out. 1st you have to be rooted. If so, then go to > system > apps. Touch the "R/O " button at the top so that it turns to "R/W". Then touch the Xoom "menu" button at the bottom of the screen (looks like a rectangular grid) and select "multi -select ". Touch/select the apps you want to delete. Then touch the delete button, which will appear at the bottom. Take care what you delete. Alternatively, you can create a new folder called "app.disabled " and just move the apps that you don't want until you are sure. Hope this helps.

Be warned that if you delete apps, even the games, future updates will not work automatically. Rename the extension of the apps you don't like or make a backup before deleting.

Thanks for all the helpful information. Once I delete the ones I dont want will the icons be removed too? If not how do you delete icons you dont want to see on the main screens?
?!
... you've got some 28GB of available space, and you're trying to save a meg or three?!

Yes, the icons will be gone too. I can't stress enough the precaution of making a disabled folder and just moving them first.

If you had any idea how much "unwanted" stuff was in your ROMs, your OCD would really go into overdrive.
I have blown up ROMs BC of deleting supposedly unwanted stuff that I finally decided to put together my own ROM and only include what I want to include...still very much a work in progress.

Im running chris41g(?)s modded stock, and I was wondering if there was a way that I could integrate the awesome adblocking of the big roms myself... messing with i GUESS putting together my own rom, and this is the one thing of all I am missing the most. I guess I am getting old, just want a simple rom theme-wise, but love the tweaks... anyone wanna help? Trade secret? If its something relatively simple like using 7zip and changing a value, or something to adb push, I can do it... just dont know what method you use, and would love to be able to just do it myself. Gonna hit up chris to throw it in his rom, but id like to do it myself too... any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
You could include adfree app in the system/app location of the ROM. OR, you can use K0nane's method (which I am even unsure how it works.) ha

Ive been all about the gears of war 3 beta atm,I just wish I could play like I want to,its down to about 4 hours on the weekend, and about 3 total during the work week. Im surprised a launch 360 made it that long.. that was one tough xbox. Yeah i have an OG 60 gig (now 320 7200rpm) PS3, from right after the blu drives got fixed... people say I should expect the ylod soon, but Im insane about my gear, most of it is in a server rack. I really need to get back into fallout vegas though, if they made a fallout mmorpg that played like the real game, I would never leave the house.
Anyways, thanks for the time on the adblocking... will try soon...
I put a zip to include adblocking in the op of my rom... its better than adfee because it doesn't block words with friends lol

did you open ad free so it can request super user permissions and download the latest host file? Usually have to reboot once afterwards. Works fine for me.

though it is kinda annoying seeing the .. error loading page errors...
itd be pretty cool if someone would compile a real trimmed down apache or other webserver that only serves up a blank image when being accessed, have it only listen on localhost, and point everything back to localhost (i guess thats done already), to get blank spots, instead of 'error loading'
The way the android system and app devs have files organized on the SD card! like seriously, it's such a mess. Nearly every app has at least one folder in there! It takes me forever to find things that I'm looking for. how difficult would it have been for there to be a folder called "APPDATA" where ALL THAT CRAP can be thrown into so all we have to see is a folder called APPDATA? There are 45 folders on my SD card right now... by shoving all the app related ones into one folder I could reduce that to maybe 10 at the most...
Does anyone else feel this way or am I just too organized Also is there any way that this could possibly be done? That would be WONDERFUL!
I agree.. and the worst part is, some folders are not recognizable to me!! A lot of them are not named to the same app name that you've installed on your phone. Sigh..
It SHOULD be laid out like this:
SDCARD/APPDATA/APPNAME/[All apps files and folders go here]
That way we know what the hell goes with what and don't have to play guessing games.
100% agree. Also I have like 5 different pictures folders, for standard camera, vignette, photaf, 360 camera... I think maybe we can contact some developers and ask them if there is some technical purpose for the folders being on the sd card root. Google will never enforce any kind of politic about this. that's what sucks about the lack of an app approval process

What exactly is that anyways?
Agree, sd card just keeps filling up from trying different apps and un-installing again, in many most cases junk is left behind on sd card and very often the folders dont have names related to the app so i have no clue what to delete to not mess up the apps i'm using.

fixed
LOST.DIR is usually data that has gotten damaged or half written to the card.
"lost files"
+1
100% true.
Currently every second app a developer makes that uses the SD to store data makes a new folder for their app.
It becomes a huge mess very fast.
I often find myself thinking WTF is this folder. only to figure out it was a folder that held some 2KB file for the game score.
Developers need to all conform to a set of rules.
Someone needs to write The Android Developers Code Of Conduct Manual.
To help developers better understand what we love and hate in android devices.
It is up to getting people informed and aware.
Only then... we can evolve.
+1
When I first got root and installed Root explorer I got so peeved at all the folders I set about deleting folders and files Willy and indeed nilly.
Not a great idea. :0
Thank Goodness for SEUS.
SE X10i 2.3.3 CM7.0.3
The worst is when an app creates a folder, then never even uses the damn thing lol....wtf you taking up room on my SD card for if you're never even gonna use it?!?!?!?!? Like i need 20 empty folders hanging around for no reason. lol
I make it a point to reformat my SD card 2-3x a year, whether it needs it or not...my phone runs soooooooo much faster with a nice organized SD card.
Placebo... Unless ur sd card were full...

have to agree. I'm sick and tired of having to clean out so much crap. Like u said it could all just go into one android folder. Why do u need a android folder, then data, then program data, then other crap from other apps.
Someone needs to for something somewhere coz I keep needing to clear up crap. This part of android is just not SMART

I was lucky enough to snag a TF101 on Black Friday. Stood in line for 3 hours with all the other nuts.
Anyway, I quickly rooted and flashed a new kernel to overclock. I'm loving this tablet so far. I haven't tried different roms yet, I'm aware of those which remove the bloatware Asus puts on. At the moment I'm still content with stock rooted. I want to remove the bloatware though. I searched but couldn't find a list of what's safe to remove and what's not. If someone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
Theres alot of the devs now removing all apks they can and putting them in a zip incase people want them maybe look at whats i them and you will know what is safe to remove
Or look at the dev threads they usually list what they have removed although some dont so have a proper look.

Not in Asus' version, but you also don't get updates in that. Just buy it on the market if you want it; it's cheap and you'll get proper updates, rather than having to wait months for bug fixes.
I removed all of the stuff asus loaded on it and the only problem I've had was trying to install an official build from Asus since the files were modified. Other than that, it runs just fine.
Had a look to see if this tip had already been posted but couldn't find it.
I've just discovered that you can group similar home screen apps by stacking them. Just drag them on top of each other. I've just done it with my browsers but you could obviously do it with games, utilities, media apps etc etc
Hope it helps some of you
If it's a duplicate or in the wrong place can one of the mods/admin move or delete it please.

It's all the extra apps that Samsung has got in there, plus all the extra ringtones, wallpapers, etc.
You can do a few things (all of which require rooting the phone).
The fastest and best method (IMO) would be to install a custom ROM and remove the bloatware that way. Look at Omega ROM
Alternatively, you can do it yourself using root explorer and apps like Root App Delete.
Or use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468596
Use any of these methods at your own risk. The first one is the safest and easiest.
Forget it, Samsung has "reserved" a certain amount of space, approx 7gb, for the system files whether its used or not.
You can't change it in any way unless you want to play around with the partition table - pit file... This is an extremely BAD idea...
