[Q] Ambient light sensor values odd - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just started to dive into CM 7's light sensor options:
Menu > Settings > CyanogenMod settings > Display > Automatic backlight
The default settings seem to be tuned for a device that detects 1-10240 lux.
Reading the raw sensor value on the "Edit other levels..." option I'm only able to max the sensor to 1023. Also, the values it can actually detect are a little odd... I've only seen values of 1, 3, 5, 17, 33, 172, 299, 326, 344, and 1023 lux.
I just got this wonderful phone on Monday, so I just wanted to double check these are the values other MT4G's get as well. If you're into this kinda stuff and want to check, you can see it under CyanogenMod settings or if you aren't on CM there's an app on the market called Light Tester which will also report sensor values.
Are you seeing the same thing I'm seeing?
If these are indeed regular values for the MT4G then this issue on CM's issue tracker could use some votes:
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=2298
If you also have a different device with a light sensor you input would be interesting as well!
Back to modifying these levels. If I find a good combination of options I'll post 'em for you guys.

Hello!
I'm just trying to find the Light Tester app on the market but i can't. If you send me the app, i would be glad to give you my feedback about how my sensor capabilities develops on my HTC Wildfire.
Thanks!

After fiddling with these settings for a few days and discovering what they mean, I have come up with a set of values that suit me best.
In very low light conditions I prefer my screen to be as dim as possible, but fully bright when outside or even near a window or also in the car.
And everything in between is set pretty well IMO
The only thing that throws it off is the fact that CM is a little buggy in this area, and I find that it lags a little or takes a screen reset (which just consists of turning it off and back on via the power button) to get a correct ambient light to value reading).

LOL would be a good test, my new phone, from craigslist, is going to black screen everytime i make a call, the only way to fix is it to put a flash light up to the senor or plug it into the wall or USB.
yay craigslist as the best excuse EVER to not give support to someone, NEW phone and tmobile nore HTC will offer any help. They all say they cant support me cause i didn't buy it from tmobile.

My phone only seems to make it up to 640. This was with my phone right next to a bright CFL bulb. Not sure if my screen protector is limiting the range of the sensor.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

I noticed in CM7.0.2 that I am now able to get the full range of values from 20-10240. Before my light sensor would only show from 20-640. So, whatever bug was causing this looks to have been squashed.

There was a bug introduced by cm7's kernel a while back which I also used (I thought cm7 team knew better, oh well). It has been fixed by Zinx for cm7 and I have the same fix in my kernels also.

Auto screen brightness doesn't work?

When I have my nexus one set to automatically adjust brightness, it doesn't seem to do anything.
I can move it between dark and bright environments and the screen brightness doesn't seem to change at all. Am I missing something or is this feature not working on my phone?
It works fine with mine. I just clicked auto in the brightness setting. Make sure you didn't accidentally change it to a different setting with the settings widget that is by default on the first home page to the right.
works fine on mine yet not a feature i use....i just set it statically.
I find the auto-brightness to be too dim for my liking. It would be great if you could adjust the overall brightness while still maintaining the automatic scaling.
Turns out it does work, it just need to be *really* bright to make it change.
It doesn't change really at all in my office between switching the lights on and off (even though that's a really big change in light levels to me). However, if i go outside, it does get brighter.
As you say though, it does seem to be set a bit low (hence it not brightening up when my office lights are turned on I guess).
If I enable auto-brightness on mine, it seems to constantly vary the brightness in my office. It's annoying as crap and I turned it off. Am I the only one?
It's probably taking a look at the available APIs to see if it's easy to write a quick app to do auto brightness with settings to be able to tweak it.
The auto-brightness feature changes constantly for me as well.
I 'm also having issues of the varying brightness when using auto-brightness -- even though the lighting in my environment has not changed and I avoid contact with the light sensor. It's VERY annoying.
I've since switched to using a static setting for the brightness.
auto brightness was one of the first things i turned off. it was way too dim for me
Not bright enough for me. Doesnt seem to change much.
I do see the variability occasionally. Most of the time it's stable, but it will take spells of shifting up and down repeatedly. Glad to know I'm not alone.
Auto bright annoyed me as well when I first got the phone. Then I realized where the sensor is (top left) and what it was responding to. Depending on where I'm sitting, what light sources are behind me, in front of me but reflecting off of me. It's usually just responding to a light source that's just withing view of its sensor. Also, my hand has shielded the sensor more than just a few times, confusing the sensor.
Now I leave auto bright on all the time, and it more often than not does a good job.
IMHO this is one of the few broken features on the phone. In continuous lighting it jumps from bright to dim to everything in between like a jack rabbit on speed. I still use it to save battery life but it pisses me off regularly.
am also having this problem. it constantly goes much brighter, and then, suddenly goes back to dim.. very annoying... however, the light sensor for calling works well... so, is it a software issue.. hope it gets google's attention and gets fixed in next update...

+1 so I also manually go between three on the widget
Note that the light sensor is under the glass on the front of the phone. Some cover-all cases cover this, and if you use one of these I assume your phone will remain on the dimmest setting.
In general, while indoors it will remain on the dimmest setting (for me anyway), but rise to the necessary full brightness when in sunlight.

There are two sensors, one is a light sensor and the other is a proximity sensor to detect when you've taken the phone from your ear. I think you're referring to the second.

+1 constant occiliation on dimmness levles under consistant light. It goes from way too dim, to just right then back dark again. I too hope that google will correct this with the next update. Hopefully the patch gets pushed soon, i'd like that extra memory

[Q] Auto brightness not functioning properly ?

Tried the auto brightness option but it doesn't make a difference with various ambients.... I've seen it worked when first bought it and while setting up for the 1st time... but that's about it
nothing installed at all, beside from the Google maps update, Flash 10.3... that's it.
not a big deal... I rarely uses that feature anyway, manually adjust the brightness most of the time.... odd that it isn't functioning like it should.
Thanks.
having the same issue
same situation here .
I had this happen too...
Just turn on autobrightness and then reboot (turn off en on again), solved it for me...
In do, however, prefer to set the brightness manually

update...
I have a "flashlight" app on my Nexus One ...
If I shine the light at the sensor - ( located directly at the bezel border inline with the screen orientation lock button ) - the auto-brightness will again work
seems like it needed a "kick-start" ... but as you use your tablet ... at a later time... the bug will again appear... and you need the "kick-start" allover again...etc
hopefully the more people report this... the issue will be address by Acer
I know my tablet's auto-brightness works, it just seems the change is incredibly gradual so maybe that's why it appears to not be working.
If i you enable disable it, it would seem that it doesn't enable but after a few seconds the brightness definitely changes.
is there anyone else beside me think that the sensor should have been a visible hole similar to the camera instead of under the dark/black bezel ??
other tablets I've seen you can visually see the sensor window/circle... The Iconia's sensor is really hidden under the bezel... you really have to look hard or at a certain angle in a bright lit area in order to vaguely see it... maybe a design flaw ?

[Q] Ambient light sensor not present?

Just as the title says-
I am not able to locate the light ambient sensor on my A500 tab- My previous A500 got replaced by acer because the speakers were defective in some way-
I have read that the light sensor is located below the volume rocker and rotation switch on the black glass and can be seen under bright light- i tried every way to find it no success.
I tried "proximityscreenoff" and "sensorlist" from the market. Both of the freewares listed an ambient light sensor on my device as -"Lite-on al3000a Ambient Light sensor"-
BOTH THE APPS COULD NOT GET ANY DATA FROM THE SENSORS :O-
DO we even have a sensor? or is it just me without it?
Can someone please use the apps and tell me if any data is being collected from the sensors?
Highly appreciated- thanks you
I tried with Sensor List and it does indeed show up the sensor, but doesn't seem to be getting any data from it. So it's not just your tablet.
Same thing with "AndroSensor", it shows it but no data change in it either. Hopefully we can figure out what the issues is? Are both of you using the factory install rom? Or a rooted one with a tweaked kernel?

I got Sensorlist and tried it and I do get data from it.
xhz/xxxx or xxxxxms and a red line. The upper limit is 227 and lower limit is -227 and the red checked number changes. It's nowhere as quickscrolling as the other sensors but I get a jagged red line moving across.
okay guyz i think i figured this whole thing out most probably-
I just came back from this electronic store, i closely examined the iconia on display- a500 - noticed the black glass under the volume rocker and rotation lock and THE LIGHT SENSOR WAS THERE! :O - looking like just any ordinary light sensor-
This made me come up to the following conclusions- since i have had another iconia before i returned it for warranty- i was able to identify the following differences-
1st variant-model
Light sensor present
Mic volume low
Volume locker button hard to push
Power button sorta pushed inside
2nd variant model -( the one i currently have)
Light sensor absent? Or hidden under black glass? (Manufacturing defect?)
Loose rotation lock (hardware) toggle
Mic volume high (as in proper)
-(i faced these additional problems)-> glass over the camera came off and the glossy label on the side slipped out.
So if u have the first variant, the one i previously had and the one i examined in the shop today- that should give u data from the light sensor, and the 2nd variant with hidden/absent light sensor won`t.
These are my findings. Feel free to point out and discuss-
What should we do? I m considering a second replacement now -_____-
With AndroSensor app open, try to put some direct light above the sensor and see if it shows some readings. I noticed that the sensor is in a sort of sleep status until it sees some light; after then it kinda wakes up and works properly.
I appear to have what you call the second variant model. I just checked with Androsensor, and the light sensor does appear to be present beneath the black glass, just under the volume up rocker. I agree it does appear to sleep until it senses a light source.

I just downloaded andro sensor-
Under light sensor it sed-waiting for event-
I took my hd2, turned on the flash! Pointed it right above the sensor and no response, it just kept saying waiting for event- so does this mean i have a defective sensor?
Can this be a kernel/rom related issue?
Pls someone try this and let us all noe.
Thanks
It's a long shot but you might attempt flipping the check mark a few times under the brightness setting and "auto adjust" as that probably toggles the sensor as well, though these apps are supposed to do it. Or close and start the app a few times and then check the sensor. I don't know what activates it but I can confirm that it has some kind of threshold where it sleeps or isn't active and another where it is, so you might want to try various things to, as others have mentioned, wake it up.
Are you using any ROMS by any chance or are you on stock? Have you done any sort of modification of the system - rooted and removed things or replaced kernels, etc?
If you are on a ROM or have done any modifications, you may want to try going back to full stock 3.2 or 3.1 and seeing if that helps before you decide it's actually defective.
Just double checked mine running a 3.2 rooted with thor's kernel. The sensor is working fine. But i did have to uncheck the box for the auto screen brightness to wake it up. Then i used a led maglight on the senor.
Readings from Androsensor:
Light (0.5mA)
55.0 lux
With the maglight cut on it.
65790.0 lux.
Please note with the maglight cut on you can see the light sensor hole then.

Same as Killer, seems to be working, rooted 3.2, couldnt see until bright light on it.
Anyone have any idea where the mic(s) are, not really important just wanna know which end to scream into when doing voice search
Mic is located directly in the top center of the front face, in the space between the glass and the bezel. You should be able to see it with just a small amount of light shining on it.
FINALLY!
after various non stop auto brightness toggle on and offs - waiting for event went and 1 lux came xD - i shone light the reading increased - and stopped working agen :|
I dunnu maybe the apps are not fully compatible.
I can say it is working because i changed my brightness to full manually and then turned auto on and the brightness level set itself automatically.
So will we have to wake up the sensor from a state of sleep all the time or is it just for the apps xP - last confusion.
Thanks every1 for ur responses, the mystery is finally coming to an end xD!

Should I Switch My S4 for Another One?

I got my S4 last week and it's great. This one doesn't have any lag, or at least not anything that concerns me. However, it does have screen issues, especially with the light adjustment. Sometimes the screen will randomly go full brightness for a second and then go back to normal, I notice this when accessing messaging sometimes. I know it also does this for Instagram, but it is suppose to do that.
Now, sometimes it seems like it does a colorshift. the screen will appear less blue and more yellow. It did this when I was accessing the facebook messenger app once and maybe another one. I might be making this up, but it just seems like the color changes ever so slightly. Also, once in a blue moon when it is adjusting screen brightness, all these vertical black lines appear for a microsecond on certain parts of the screen, it seems like an even distribution of lines. Reminds me of something old game boys might do.
I am very happy with the phone though, and I don't want to switch it if I don't have too. However, if another version might not have these issues, I want to switch ASAP, I only have a week left to swap for a new one. After that, my 14 days are up and they said they would only give me refurbs. :[
Do it.
I'm stuck with a defective screen 16GB because the 32GB did not come in on launch day which was my last day to return.
My only option at this point is to get another 16GB that's refurbished from warranty.
The irony in all this is that I manage the kiosk where I purchased the phone on my personal account.
My employees' phones and demo don't have the same screen issues I have.

I will check out the settings. The events that this glitches happen are rare, but it has only been a week and they have happened numerous times. The auto lighting adjustment sucks, times when it should be bright it's not. Plus the black line stuff that happens sometimes. If all of them experience this I dont want to trade in for another one. I don't want to risk trading my working phone for one that won't work so well.

I would swap it if I were you.. I came from the HTC one because of repeated problems and switched to the s4... I've only had it a few days now but have only experienced some lag (fixed by tweaking settings) and the auto brightness is a little slow to adjust sometimes (I've always though this about all my Samsung devices).. But no color changing or bars appearing.. Just my 2 cents..

that is partially due to the type of color meter and ambient light sensor type (should be a 40-something segment black and white unless my info on the sensor specs are off. i believe apple has designed a proprietary multisegment rgb meter for theirs). b/w meters get lumens correct, but not perceived brightness (human eye is not the same as a sensor).
the color changing issue you are having may be due to the display mode being set on auto (start, settings, display mode) and under lighting that the sensor cannot correctly meter for (fluorescent lights flicker at the same hertz as your AC current, and are actually pretty dim and WAY off for color balance, so that SHOULD throw the sensors off continuously, which would lead to auto brightness hunting and inaccurate selection of the 'correct' color mode).
try turning auto brightness off and color mode to professional photo or movie (i use move as its very flat and closer to real colors). there ought to be a way to trick the ambient brightness sensor to sample and average at a faster rate, and ramp up/down more smoothly, but i cant code for android otherwise i would have been working on one.
i work in tv/film industry on the sensor/lighting side btw. if the issue goes away, turn on auto brightness and check it out under NON FLUORESCENT lighting. if its gone, it was probably the display mode changing along with auto brightness.

I had no idea the S4 had these options. I guess I am used to my Atrix which didnt do much. I went in and adjusted the settings. The auto screen brightness never really did a good job, I feel that it is way too dim in situations where it should be brighter. I will text your advice the next week and see what happens. If I still get issues, I will return it as I have one week left of my 14 days. Thank you very much for the excellent advice!

no problem; the auto brightness on the GS4 is only slightly better than the Atrix 4G (had one too), and same as the GS3. The color mode thing (which is awesome; closer to real life colors versus waaaay oversaturated screens on most phones. also check power saving settings.

Well, I have not seen those black lines since I turned off auto brightness and turned off the screen automatically doing it's own color adjustments. I will turn these back on to see if I can duplicate the issue. I do feel that I have more lag now, but I could just be paranoid.
OK, when I am using my Facebook Messenger App, sometimes these black lines appear horizontally across the screen on low brightness. However, sometimes they dont. I dont want to call them black lines, but maybe I should say they are ghostly tv lines that are barely noticeable. Ideas?
Could someone explain the defective screen issue?, mine looks great...
The phone works great most of the time and is totally useable, the only issue is that sometimes it does these weird things as I have explained. Tomorrow is the 14 day mark, so I am having a hard time deciding if I should switch for another one just in case, or assume all of this is normal and hope the phone lasts me 2 years.

Could possibly be a GPU issue. Have you had any problems playing heavy duty 3d games?
Sent from my GT-N7100
No problems playing the Iron Man 3 game, everything seems fine.
It seems like any time the keyboard is pulled up, the screen shifts color to something more yellow. all of the keys go from a nice grey to a off grey yellow tint color. During this transition, I can literally see the screen transition as weird lines appear for a fraction of a second, like switching channels on an old TV. I tried recording this on my DSLR 1080P camera but it could not pick up the color change visibly. I might try again. It does this on Google Chrome, Facebook Messenger, Snap Chat even. sometimes it color shifts even when the keyboard is not involved. I have the auto adjustments on the screen off and the color set to Standard Mode.
The ATT store said I am a day out of my 14 day limit and there is nothing they can do. They said I have to talk to warranty and see if they will be nice enough to send me a new one. I dont want a refurb, last time that happened, I went through 4 of them. I talked to ATT support and they said they would extend my 14 days another 3 days but the ATT store said I was out of luck for an exchange for a new phone.
So no one elses screen color shifts to yellow when the keyboard pops up? Mine does this now all the time, mainly in low light. It might do it in all light situations but in sunlight I prolly just can't see it. It's incredibly annoying because the screen itself wacks out every time it does it.

Screen flicker workaround

Hi everyone
I want to share a workaround to all of us who owns a defective S5
Symptom: You unlock your phone and it doesn't show anything. Actually, the phone is working. Capacitive buttons light up and you may heard some activity in the phone
Your phone has a defective screen. There are a lot S5 which have this problem, according to several forums. After several tries, unlock and lock over and over, the screen light up and you are able to use your phone. The problem is when you receive a call and you want to know who is calling you, the screen doesn't illuminate and you won’t be able to know who is.
Here's a workaround which makes your powerful S5 usable and take out from your drawer.
Solution:
The more effective way to fix it is: change defective screen! But sometimes it could cost as much as a new phone, or simply you can't afford it, and it's better to change your phone instead, and you put your S5 in a drawer.
The technical explanation of this problem is: Screen doesn't receive enough electrical current at low brightness levels (maybe the flex is defective, get old, etc)
Most probably the wake up problem exist together with screen flicker at low brightness levels
The wake up problem rises up more in dark environment, when light sensor make low bright screen
The lock screen light up screen, with a dim effect: when you lock the phone, it slowly turn screen off, and when you unlock, it make and effect of dim screen.
When you are is in dark environment, the effect is very slow, preventing the screen illuminate because the technical problem explained before.
When you are in very light environment, you lock screen and sensor light make the screen very brilliant and chances are you defective phone wakes up correctly.
We can use an app which give us complete control over brightness subsystem. I use an app called Velis AutoBrightness:
Once installed from Play Store, it shows a Setting Wizard. Follow the instructions. Below are some notes
• 1/7: Welcome Screen
• 2/7: How bright... Most probably is your phone always have flicker in low brightness. Choose "AMOLED" or "AMOLED bright". By the way choosing any one of those cure always minimum brightness failure!
• 3/7: Choose High sensitivity
• 4/7: On, if you want additional brightness when charging. Irrelevant for this thead. Choose your favorite setting
• 5/7: Same of 4/7
• 6/7: Choose enable: That enable the app
• 7/7: Some additional notes: Press Done
Now important settings: go to Menu > Settings > General: Settings Mode > Advanced
Service Activation settings:
• Disable system handler > ON: When you use Power saving mode, you surely noted screen flicker, which is very annoying, and make unusable power saving mode. By set this ON: Android doesn't set screen too dim; instead Velis have a minimum of brightness set by Wizard 2/7. (Surely you find out that you avoid screen flicker, by setting autobrightness off and slider in 8-10%)
Sensors settings:
• Screen-on sensor value override: Set this value to 30000. Read below this post if you want technical explanation of this setting
After you establish these settings, you'll be able to unlock your phone all the time!
This is the trick: When you unlock your phone, you'll note that the screen is very bright (because Screen-on to 30000) and quickly adjust to the environment light. The failure is that electrical current to screen is defective, and when exterior light is dark, the screen make a dim effect and doesn't light up.
Note to Marshmallow users:
• This app make use of Screen overlay permisions: And marshmallow is very restrict with this kind of app. This is specially true when you are installing an app. All you have to do is deactivate the app in notification screen: press "OFF" button, adjust system brightness upper enough to not flicker the screen, install your app, and activate Velis Autobrightness again
• Because of Doze mode, wake up from this mode may avoid your screen light up, the first time you use your phone. Let 10-15 seconds your phone wake up, lock again, and unlock again, and velis will make its work!
I hope this post make your smartphone usable. I barely apply this trick to two phones, but I think this is a good workaround!
I used this app & the flickering is still available
What worked for me is downgrading the firmware on my g900f all the way back to Android 4.0. My phone came with version 5.0 and I noticed the problem only after I kept installing samsung's system updates. Will report if the problem starts up again but I'm running rooted and running nougat just fine so I don't see a reason to keep upgrading the firmware.
Edit: nevermind, this didn't work

Does anyone know for sure if it's the flex cable or some capacitors? I notice only the lower half of my screen flickers.. I bet there's a simple electrical fix for it instead of replacing the whoooole display

Hello,
Have you change jour battery? If it s old it could cause some issues...
But try to buy a genuine one, I think that your battery must be old now.
Bye

I noticed that screen only flickers at low brightness when using Boeffla kernel for LOS14 and others based on it.
No issue for the same device with LOS or Stock based kernels.

+1 to that , i even went back to stock and the screen flicker appeared and such issues are well known already with samsung amoled panels back in 2014-even some panels from 2018 . So def not kernel related.
I was using los 15.1 and this problem got worse. The phone was barely usable as mentioned by the op. In my case, the screen would start flickering below 60%. Then I switched back to stock marshmallow. I noticed that 100% brightness in los 15.1 is actually only about 70% in the stock rom.
I have been using the phone at 80% brightness for some weeks now and the problem has significantly reduced. But not completely gone, it's much much better. Also, you might want to avoid using dark wallpapers.
