Sam's Club and wifi Xoom - Xoom General

So, has anybody verified yet if the $539 wifi Xoom at Sam's Club rumor was valid? There's nothing yet on their Web site, and my closest Sam's club is 30 miles away...

My local Sam's Club did not have it at all. And as you said, its not on their site yet.

Yeah, I called around and it's looking like only some selected stores will be carrying the Xoom, maybe the sames ones that are carrying the iPad. None of those are close to me, so I'll be off to Costco today to get my wifi-only (and then return the 3G version once I see that the wifi-only version is decent).

Obviously, I hadn't seen it verified that the price at the setup store wouldn't make it into reality, and if that's been verified "100 times" since the wifi Xoom started selling this morning, I'd be amazed. Indeed, my question was about confirmation one way or another about whether or not that price would be the official price, which could only be settled today.
I also haven't seen the wifi Xoom at any Sam's Club stores, period, at any price. So, a good answer would have been, "It's available at some Sam's Clubs, but it's selling for $589." Incidentally, what stores have you seen it at? I called the three within an hour's drive of my house and they all said they won't be carrying it. Apparently, only certain stores might be carrying it (and they weren't sure), probably the limited number of stores that also carry the iPad.

It was covered on every major place that ran the $539 story that this was a mock store and a mockup potential price, and there was no real indication that any store would actually be selling this low or selling it at all with any widespread availability, especially considering Costco is only selling for $589.

Hence my freaking question... You know, to verify or debunk the rumor.
Damn, these forums are frustrating sometimes.

I went to my Sam's Club (Naperville, IL) and they don't even have a date for them to arrive in inventory. The local Costco however, had the big display with cardboard XOOMs with gel case for $589.

Exactly what I was saying... No one has been able to confirm the price or availability. Not sure what else you want people to tell you. I was simply informing you that the first poster isn't incorrect, it really has been said a million times that this is a mockup price.
I don't think that meeting informative answers with snarkiness is getting you anywhere. If you've read up on any of the articles that this was reported in when it first came out (been a while now) you'll see that there really isn't any information on the Sam's Club price or release. The only response you're gonna get is this unless you contact a store and get a concrete answer.

I was waiting on Sam's myself but with Amazon being tax free and free shipping, it works out to almost the same as Sam's price+tax.

The Sam's Club in Kenosha WI did not have it either, nor could he tell me if and when to expect it. I wound up buying one at the BB up there since they offer 18 months same as cash, and sales tax is half of Illinois.

Nexus One just arriving at third party outlets?

It was a bargain at Google's online outlet. How can they have the balls to say the phone is a $699.00 retail phone? $300.00 with a new two year T-Mobile contract? This isn't going to help sales.
Here it is at i-wireless
Here it is at Pure Wireless for AT&T - no contract price of $638.00 plus shipping.
Ugh - I hope this isn't going to be a sign of what's to come.
Wow, never even thought of seeing it at those prices. I'm not sure what to make of this actually because they were talking about selling it at retail outlets, not on the internet.
This one is my favorite.

Those seem like 3rd party retailers, they always seem to bloat the prices so they make money off of it, if you go directly to an official store, they'll have it at the actual price. I heard t-mobile is going to start selling it officially.

NOUN
1. sale to consumers: the selling of goods directly to customers, e.g. in stores
"She works in retail."
ADVERB
1. not wholesale: from an ordinary store or at the regular customer price and in small amounts rather than in bulk
"I bought it retail."
This is something that maybe has a different connotation elsewhere but retail around here refers to brick and mortar. Before there was an internet something not bought at retail or catalog sales from a retailer was either mail order or private sale. Nowdays you can add internet sales to that as a different venue to shop but it is not retail.
edit... Maybe its just because I'm old. Let me rephrase, its not retail to me or basically anyone I know. I'm going to have to ask one of my kids the next time they come over.
This is what I've been saying all along. It's not carriers they mentioned, they said third party retail, like amazon, best buy, frys electronics, etc. I mean what carriers are left? They all passed on the nexus, so the only places left are stores.

Did I say retail? I asked if this is a sign of things to come because NO ONE has yet announced the Nexus One is slated for their retail outlet. Also, the AT&T version is "temporarily unavailable" from the Google online store.
If sales are so damn bad, how did this happen?

And this happened because they are letting inventory drop before allowing a retailer to take over? A $99.00 AT&T Nexus at Walmart would be outstanding. With my luck, it will end up at Radio Shack for $429.00 with a new contract. My wife now wants one.

Well, we're waiting a few days for the new iphone to come out. If I peddle that on Ebay new and unopened and contract free, it ought to bring enough profit to pay for a good part of a new N1. I just hope it's available for a reasonable price somewhere when we're ready to buy.

They said retail in their announcement. You know, it turns out people want to get their hands on them, or whatever the language was. I dont feel like looking it up but I'm sure you recall that. That is why I wonder exactly what this is all about. This isnt going to move many more handsets than their own direct sales. Thats where I was going about it not making sense. It doesnt jive with what they said.
FYI, I Wireless is a cell phone provider based out of Iowa, and is affiliated with T-Mobile USA, although both are still separate companies. They have had the Nexus One since the end of March at select corporate locations. The reason they are priced that much is because they had to buy them 5 at a time from Google in order to offer them to customers. They did this because they wanted to offer their customers the Nexus One, and this was the only way they could at a discount.
With the change in Google policy, they are now available at every location in the company. But here is the thing, Google is still selling the phone to retailers and carriers, and they are charging an arm and a leg for each unit. $300 on contract is still a large discount from what the whole sale price of the phone is for most retailers... some retailers and carriers, ie T-Mobile, are getting a better deal, thus can offer a lower price. But they are also taking a bigger hit than others are (they can afford to because they have a larger customer base, thus if they only make $20 over a 2 year contract off a Nexus One owner, they can handle that because they have so many customers it still adds up to millions in the end).

Well, $529.00 retail/no contract is not an arm and a leg. The price should drop in half or more with a new 2 year contract - the plans have fat in the price to provide a hefty $300.00 or more sudsidy. AT&T just increased their early termination contract penalty to $325.00 on smart phones to make sure they recover their subsidy. Something is just not right with this picture.
Man, Google is dumb here.
Why does it have to be online-only or store-only?
What they should have done is send one or two phones to all T-Mobile stores, and maybe have an online kiosk too. Then people can check it out in person and BOOM, sold.
It doesn't have to be one or the other.

I Wireless doesn't charge $325, though. And like I already said, they were buying them 5 at a time at full retail price just to offer them to their customers. That is a $260 subsidy... but that in perspective, if you gave that discount on a BB Bold 9700, the phone would be about $50. In general, most phones are subsidized about $100 for a dumb phone and $200 for a smartphone. And net the carrier about $50-$100 in total profit over a 2 year contract. Verizon and AT&T make much more than the T-Mobile's, and especially I Wireless of the world.

Order Status -- Back Ordered!!

So I go to check my order status at BB to see if it shipped late yesterday or last night and it says "Status - Back Ordered".
WTF!!!
Maybe I should just tell Sammy to go pound sand! I already have some concerns about them and their promises.
My order now says "Being fulfilled. Usually ships in 1-2 days."
Dang it - I was hoping to cancel and run down to BB store and look for stock.

lucky i have one close to my job that has them available. taking an early lunch to pick it up.
I pre-ordered mine earlier this past weekend. BestBuy claimed they weren't going to ship them until today. So I canceled my order. Went online last night & purchased it for in store pickup. Got an Email about 30 minutes ago saying that my order is ready for pickup. Can't wait to the store opens so I can go grab it!

Turns out, if you just call up Customer support and ask nicely, they'll transfer your order to an in-store pickup location, and get priority over people who just ordered it last night/this morning.
Now thats customer service.

Interesting enough, when I call the local stores they have the 16G White version. Guess Samsung made lots of those.
Once the status says "Processing" customer service can't do anything. I tried this morning to have them transfer my order to a local store.
Good news is that I just got a confirmation e-mail that it just shipped, but now I have to wait for it to arrive instead of grabbing it from the store.
Thanks to substandard customer service, BB has lost my business. I called another store who also did not have the 32G version in stock but did notify me that they are showing the warehouse has units available if I wanted to do a store pickup. So I asked how could they have it in the warehouse and I get a back ordered status? The store customer service rep stated I should call the 888 number to find out. I did that and was abruptly told that the .com warehouse was different and they are obviously out of stock. So I tried to rationalize with her that why would BB take preorders and then not allocate units that they obviously have available. She states that "Sir I just told you that the .com uses a different warehouse". So I (with some sarcasm at this point) ask her if it is the same company. Well at no time did she offer to find one locally or go ahead and have one shipped to my local store and when I finally asked her if she could do that for me, I said never mind if I have to ask you to do that for me then I will just purchase from another business who values customer service. I assure you that at no time was I rude and only got sarcastic at the end of the conversation.
c'est la vie
For me....Only Best Buy stores that have them are way too far away. Local ones don't have them and unknown when either, so its the luck of the draw as to where Samsung ships to and how many to even bother driving for one just to be disappointed in selling out.
I would just a rather order online instead

I couldn't find any BB stores in the state of Massachusetts that had the 32gb version, so I went online.
Circuit City claims to have an order today/ship today policy on the 32gb version. I went ahead a tried it - we'll see. I did it from their website, not from Amazon, and had to call them to ask them to process the order now.
I didn't know circuit city even existed anymore.
Bummer about the horror stories. Not to make you feel bad, but I strolled into my local Best Buy about 15 minutes after opening today. No pre-order, no deposit, no nothing. Walked out with the 32GB Grey ... and they didn't charge me sales tax! That's a 9.75% (~$60) bonus!

Good to hear someone had a good experience. I don't feel bad just a little jealous I guess. I'm actually thinking about just getting the Iconia instead. I have had the xoom and transformer but returned them both. The xoom for a charging issue and I just never liked the feel of the transformer, maybe just a little to wide and I have larger than avg hands.
I suffered from the same back-order issue. I pre-ordered one for my wife when I first got the e-mail from Samsung on 6/6/2011. Now you would think with my last name being at the beginning of the alphabet and my order being placed so early that I would be a shoe-in to receive one.
WRONG! I didn't receive an e-mail or anything. I'm a Silver Rewards member because of my continued customer loyalty...yet you can't even let me know what's going on before hand so I can order elsewhere.
I called 3 stores, checked online, did a online chat with Best Buy employee Brenda, and then talked to 4 different people through customer support. I heard different answers each time but the same result. "It shows as back-ordered but that it will ship in 1-2 business days." From the stores I heard "We haven't received our shipments yet but the ones we're getting are for pre-orders." The last statement was obviously a lie because ship-to-store has not been an option for any of the local 10 Best Buy stores.
How does any of this make sense? Yes I could come up with some patchwork logic to calm myself but at the end of the day, it's horrible customer service. I was respectful to each person I talked to. I didn't even complain. I went online to cancel my order and then called back to make sure it was done.
I'll keep it real simple. Worked for Best Buy for roughly 2 1/2 years during my younger days. During high school and then when I was in college in Tucson.
I hate Best Buy. From their "non-commission" approach they have the sales associates present shoppers with to their TERRIBLE phone customer service, the place is nothing but horrible experiences. I have a Rewards Silver account with them as well. I've spent way too much money to care to calculate with them and they continue to suck. I've shifted my purchasing from Best Buy to Amazon and am now a Prime Member with them (have been for over a year).
To stay on point with the OP, I went to Best Buy on Camelback in Phoenix this morning to see if they had any in stock. The PCHO (PC / Home Office) and Mobile Phone in store reps both told me they didn't get any in nor did the rest of the state of AZ. The only way I could get a Galaxy Tab was through Best Buy.com. This was after roaming around both departments for 10-15 minutes waiting for a sales rep to approach me (or even see one that I could approach for help). All immediately after the store had opened. Non-knowledgable, unwilling to help anyone sales reps and terrible supervisor / management that could give two craps less about your experience and care about nothing other than you buying a Geek Squad extended service plans and taking advantage of their financing offers.
I'm not buying a Galaxy Tab at all now nor am I, for any reason, shopping at Best Buy any longer (not like it's a huge deal... their stores have been dwindling in the number of shoppers for the past two years).
At first thought it's nice to see that I am not alone, but it really is kinda of sad. I do hear lots of great things about Amazon and have purchased a couple of times through them, but i am still a little weary about online purchases. Not really rational since Amazon does in all regards appear to be very safe and easy even with respect to returns. So who knows maybe it is Amazon here I come!
Prime Membership is totally worth it if you shop on Amazon frequently. I do ALL of my Christmas shopping each year with them, never any hiccups. As a Prime member, you get FREE Two Day shipping on almost everything you buy along with no tax. It destroys whatever Best Buy offers these days. On new videogame releases, they are not only typically $5-10 cheaper, there is no tax and it arrives on the same day of release at my front door.

Best Buy. Long story but they really wanted me to buy a tablet there. Employees came from all around with discounts for me at check out. There was an actual line of employees with printed skews in their hands, each one adding a new discount. I was still in disbelief when I got home. Oh yeah, the funny part was when the all got through with their discounts another guy walked up typed something in, while another dropped his jaw and said, "Did you just give him a $100 off without a managers aproval, how did you do that?" Best buy said they dont price match coupons.
Thank you so much for this post, I just got back from Staples with a 16gb Tab. The tech guy in the store said they got 3 of them in yesterday and 1 person bought one late last night and the 2nd one was purchased 5 minutes before me and I got the last one. While he and I were talking 2 more people walked up asking for them and were told they were sold out. He said each store only got 2 or 3 of them.
They did have the Xoom, Playbook and Iconia in stock. The Iconia was quite tempting for $299!!! I also wouldn't have minded getting a Xoom for $399 to goof off with. This new Tab is for my son as I already have one myself. I wish they had the 32gb versions in the store but they said that model is only available online. Staples is also running a special for 15% off any tablet accessories when purchasing a tablet but they no Tab accessories in stock yet. The guy said they haven't received their end cap for the Tab which usually comes with the accessories shipment. He said he would honor the 15% offer once they receive their accessories so I'm going to check back periodically. Checking stock on their website shows other stores in the area have Tabs as well but the guy said it can take up to 24 hours for the online stock checker to update so with the rush of buyers looking for them with the coupon deal I suspect they'll all be gone very quickly. FYI, they are selling the metallic gray version (not the white). The website doesn't give any indication of color...

So how much did you exactly pay for the 16gb SGT??
Depending on your tax, I got mine for $430 after tax and coupon.
Too bad they don't stock the 32GB in any of their stores...
I wonder if they will honor this coupon over the phone to order a 32GB?? Guess I'll be trying here shortly
they do honor in store...

Tried a few Staples in DC metro area. Some don't have any. One store that do have in stock can't make the coupon work. Finally found one store that the manager knows about the coupon and offered to order one for me from Kiosk and pay at the register to use the coupon w/o any problem. I'll pick the tab up this Firday. $420 with tax.
Well, I was on a fence because of luck of Netflix. But now Netflix is sorted out and I've got 16Gb for 400 bucks plus tax from staples.
Got mine from staples 424.99 16gb when to four stores and the last store had 3 left also most stores don't have them on display
I picked up my Galaxy 10.1 at Staples today. I noticed that they didn't have any on display, but there were Xooms, Acers, Blackberries, etc. When I asked them why, they said that yesterday somebody tried to walk off with the display model, so they took it off display. Seems to me that he could have tried to walk off with any of them, so why remove just one?
Anyway, another guy said they had gotten their shipment in on Sunday (3 days ago), and I was the first to buy one. He said the store is getting many returns on tablets, because people buy them thinking they are laptops -- minus the keyboards. I assured him that I was familiar with the android system, owning a rooted Nook.
I am happy with the Samsung so far, but Honeycomb is a little bigger learning curve over Android 2.3. But my buddy at work has a Xoom, so I'll be picking his brain over the next couple of weeks.

What do you mean, "Netflix is sorted out?" Can Netflix be played on my Samsung? (Forgive me, I'm a Honeycomb newbie).

If you are thinking about upgrading to the infinity i got a deal for you

As some of you know i started a thread about possibly selling my OG for an infinity. I had someone who wanted to buy it off me for 250.
Well as i was reading through the infinity forums for product reviews i stumbled on a post about a guy that got best buy to honor a price match for random company called surefireshops.com for.... wait for it... 347.49! So i gave it a try and couldn't believe best buy actually did it!
So in the end , if you include the money i got from the guy who wanted my OG tablet, i got a brand new infinity with keyboard for a little over 260 dollars. If you are thinking about upgrading, DO IT! This tablet is amazing and for that price, seriously its a no brainer!

Well if you read my post, you would seei didnt actually buy the tablet from that website. I used the price match at best buy and they gave me the infinity at that price at their store. Plus i sold my OG so i actually paid 250, which you would know if you knew how to read.

Its basically a price match. You show the best buy representative the site on your phone. I would try and do it on a day they are really busy.

Lol no worries i was like "why is this guy ragging on me, im just trying to spread some awesome deals". Yea i was skeptical about it at first when i saw that the poster said it had worked. But once he provided a picture of his receipt with the price match details the flood gates opened and everyone started going to best buy. Honestly i would not be able to afford the infinity without the deal. Went from paying close to 700 to paying 260....Not bad

Great deal but let's be clear you paid 350 for the tab. The fact that you sold your used tf101 really doesn't come into the picture as far as the deal goes.

Well im writing to you on the TF101 forum. Which means, if im not mistaken, most of the users on here own a tf101. Im also posting of upgrading from a tf101 to the infinity. So im assuming that you will be selling your tf101 to help purchase the infinity. So technically everyone on here will pay roughly around the same amount if they use the same price match ans sell their OG transformer for a decent price.

I'm surprised Best Buy would do that, since Best Buy does not match the prices of Internet-only retailers. nor do they match the website prices of their local retail competitors' stores.
Best Buy Puerto Rico stores have their own store price guarantee.
All other stores are not supposed to match internet-only retailers.
Whatever manager in that particular store approved that, he/she will most likely be fired.
They will most certainly take a huge hit to their bottom line if that particular store is doing it excessively.
No wonder Best Buy is in dire straits.

Probably not. Its up to the discretion of each individual manager at a particular best buy. If they feel that they will benefit from giving that particular customer the discount in order to keep their business and also not allow a competitor to have the sale, they will most likely do it. Also i dont know what best you shop at, but the ones where i live always price match online retailers.

I was a retail manager for 10 years.
As far as hardware sales go, the profit margin is quite thin.
Selling the tablet at retail, there's a 5 to 6 % profit margin at best.
Retailers make their profit on extended warranties and accessories, not hardware sales.
If a consumer came in with such a price match, and is willing to purchase an extended warranty, i could possibly, although highly unlikely, see the sale going through.
True, the ultimate decision lies with the store manager, as long as the manager's decision is within Best Buy's price matching policy.
In this case, it is not.

Does Best Buy match the prices of Internet retailers?
No. Best Buy does not match the prices of Internet-only retailers or the website prices of our local retail competitors' stores.

Let me know if you find a clause in there where it states "matching Internet-only retailer's pricing is at a store manager's discretion".
Bottom line, the store manager in the Best Buy you frequent is not abiding by Best Buy's price matching policy.
Period.
Here's a scenario of discretionary decision-making by a Best Buy store manager, still within Best Buy's price matching policy:
Say you went to PC Richard and they had a one day sale on the tablet.
50 dollars less than your local Best Buy down the street.
The PC Richard store manager:
"Sorry sir, we are sold out. First come first serve. While quantities last.
Can i interest you in anything else? No? Ok, have a good day, sir"
So you walk down the street to your local Best Buy with your PC Richard Sunday ad, requesting a price match.
The store manager gets on the phone with one of the PC Richard's store managers.
After a brief conversation, he hangs up the phone and tells you:
"Sir, they are out of stock. I will not match this price."
You explain, with frustration and wild abandon to the manager:
"But, but, I shop here all the time, i'm a regular customer, please i don't have enough money", and blah, blah, blah.
Then the store manager, at his discretion, decides to price match PC Richard's price to hold on to you as a regular customer.
Although the store is not making its 5 to 6 % profit, it is still making a small profit, and retains you as a loyal customer, and the store manager is following the price matching policy.
Anyone who would give a product away at that price, not make a profit, without a thorough investigation of legitimacy and availability of the product at the online retailer, is a blithering idiot, and in the long run, will either be written up, suspended, demoted or lose their job when the store's P & L statement is reviewed by Best Buy Corporate.
I don't know what Best buy you shop at either, but I shop at Best Buy in Manhattan, and i'm a Premier Silver member.
If i brought in that particular price match, i would be laughed at, and rightfully so.
As far as i know, most businesses are in business to make money, not lose it.

Best Buy isn't making a ton of money. They are losing billions. Their 2Q profit dropped 90% and their stock tumbled to a 9 year low.
Best Buy lost $1.7 billion/$4.89 per share, for the period ending March 3.
Best Buy is closing 50 big box stores because they are losing a ton of money.

My point is clear.
As i simply stated in my first reply, i'm surprised Best Buy would honor such a price match, since it goes against their policy, they are suffering a tremendous loss, and it is one of the reasons the company is having serious financial issues.
That is all. Nothing more to it.
Do you have difficulty understanding that?
If so, perhaps you should take a basic reading comprehension course.
And you stated yourself you're surprised Best Buy actually did it, albeit a shady online retailer:

Office Max deals

If you have a store nearby and they have the device, you can get 20% off until 1/11/2014. The online coupon details indicate only "select" tablets so not sure about the N7 with online purchase, but store purchase has no such disclaimer and includes tablets and eReaders on the coupon.

Thanks for this. Just a heads-up, I caught this deal last night, then called Best Buy to get a price match. They ended up doing so, and giving me the White version of the 32GB (which they're recently started to stock) for a total of $234 shipped, which is retail minus 20% plus local sales tax. Can't ask for much better a deal than that!

When I called best buy, the rep asked for the price match and was told no by whomever stating they don't price match coupons?! So I will be returning the first one I bought from them (had a dead pixel and dust under the screen) and buy from officemax. Their loss.

That's a bummer. When I spoke with the BB rep, they had to do some verification behind the scenes. I was surprised they matched it for me because I was requesting the white model but price matching it to Office Max's black model (they don't have white). Nonetheless, OMX was sold out online, and but had the option of buying online for in-store pickup. So as soon as the BB rep could get a hold of the store to verify the price, they OK'ed it. You're right, I suppose it's their loss. They'd still make plenty of margin on the sale, even with the 20% off.
To be honest, I'd say you call back and try it again while the sale is still on. I've read OMX is ending the sale soon, and best buy should ultimately honor the price. I think the turning point for me was when I showed then that you can add it to your cart online and have the out-the-door price show up as the 20% off. Anyway, best of luck to you.

The rep actually felt bad about it stating he should have done it after checking the site himself because it was taking so long to get a response from whoever does the price checks. Also, since the one I bought three days ago in store from them had defects, he said he maybe should have told them that too since he said they don't like to do price matches. He did see it was sold out online but I told him that it was available for pickup in store, from both retailers (apparently, best buy was showing out of stock on his side, but I was able to add it to my cart). I just would have preferred to order from best buy. Didn't even think about getting them to call a store. Went ahead and ordered from office max

I see. Sorry you had a poor experience with the previous purchase, but at least you were able to get the deal. I agree, though, on purchasing from BB. I dont necessarily prefer BB for all purchases in general, but in this case, I'd definitely prefer them over OMX.
I picked up a new Nexus 7 this past weekend. Thanks OP for the info on the Office Max discount. The closest Office Max to me is 65 miles away; however I got my local Best Buy to price match the 20% discount. I spent a week debating whether or not to buy the 16gb or the 32gb model. Ended up getting the 32gb that I wanted for the price of the 16gb! Total was $228 with tax.
