I have tried

Are you using the latest version of Wifi Tether that supports setting up a true AP or still using an older version that only supports ad-hoc? Last I heard Android cannot see ad-hoc networks.
You are using adhoc. Android phones can't see that

They can see that. My Droidx sees it just fine.
I just perm rooted. And I heard about t mobile charging for tethering. Will I still be able to use the 2.0.5 wifi tethering app for root users without getting charged?

Well I use the stock app and T-Mobile says is free (for now). You could use other apps like Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether. You could also use the andorid-wifi-teather app http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/. I like the latter of the two the best.
If you don't use the stock tmo app, you should be fine... we won't know till Nov 14th tho...

ive seen a couple people saying they gotten wifi tether 2.0.5 to work fine (before permroot) but it doesnt seem to work for me (kernel does not support tethering)
How did you guys get it to work? correct me if im wrong but temproot/permroot shouldnt have anything to do with it cus its saying its the kernel... (unless this is the generic error message)
perm rooted, with s off, I just dl 2.0.5 pre13
Works fine...

Has anyone heard/figured out how TMo will be "stopping" tethering (update, account sync file, etc.)?
I will not accept an OTA (won't get one while rooted anyway) and have account sync turned off.

this ones a mystery so far... I just dont think tmo would announce the charge then make the change.... I would guess its already done (key word guess but who knows this change could of been made months ago... before the g2's release)
Anyone see a change yet or figure out how they are going to charge for tethering?

Question, I haven't got internet set up yet at my new place and I want to set up my wife's laptop for tethering off my aria, cm6.1 rc1 so just wondering what driver I need to install to get the tethering to work. It works on my desktop but I've never had my phone hooked up to her laptop. Any help with this is greatly appreciated...

Alright, I just installed the Cyanogen mod on my Wildfire, the thing is, I don't have any wifi networks around me, (My Internet is cable).
And I can't tether because that costs a ton, already got charged $400 because I didn't know tethering cost money.
Does anyone know anyway to get any applications on my Wildfire without having access to the Internet?
There are only a few ways to gain access to internet. First is to connect to a WiFi connection so maybe you could try going to popular shopping malls which provide free WiFi. Next the other way is using data connectivity aka 3.5g to access internet but only use it if your plan comes with a data bundle. But maybe you can try thetering your cable brodband from your computer and use your phone to receive it as an ad-hoc network.

Google PDA net or barnacle wifi tether or froyo does it out of the box in mobile network settings
I'm kind of a noob to all this stuff so please go easy on me. Anyways, my phone wouldn't root on my laptop because the laptop wouldn't recognize it even after installing drivers and trying a million times so I couldn't root through that. So I turned to z4root which was a one click app root on the market...since then everythings worked good like superuser titanium backup etc. But for some reason my wifi tetherin won't work...any ideas?
It comes up as a network on my computer with good strength but when I go to connect it never does...
Thanks

Windows 7 laptop? Lots of people have issues with windows 7 and ad-hoc connections.

No actually I have 2 laptops...one is running windows vista 64 bit which I was thinking might be a reason...and my other one is the Google chrome os cr-48 notebook...neither can connect :/...any other ideas?
Could it be a sucky root or something?
Thanks again...

Really? I haven't had any trouble connecting Windows 7 to my wifi tether.
To the OP, do you have access control on? If so, you may have to grant the computer access. Press menu, access control and select your computer on that screen, then apply changes. Hope this helps.

Why.don't u try mobileap? What wifi tether are you using? It wouldn't be your root. That has nothing to do with it. Your either rooted or your not.

Im not home right now but I definitely will when I get a chance...ive tried barnacle wifi and wireless tether...but that's what I figured "either rooted or not" :/
Anyways heres a few screenshots of what's happening...
