Airplane Mode not always working on Verizon Xoom - Xoom General

For everyone using the Xoom data plan and placing it in airplane mode, it may not shut it down. 3x over the past week I have been traveling on the train with my Xoom in Airplane mode and wifi on (was afraid of data usage). Well I was getting "Dings" for email. When i looked, it had full bar on the VZ network and was still in "ON" mode for airplane. Switching Airplane off and on rectified this issue.
Has anyone else experiened this? It is just something to be mindful of.
I returned my Xoom (VZ could not get me hooked up to my VZ) and am getting the wifi one next week.

Fortunate for me I haven't had this issue

Ii have my 3g off all the time,... only turn it on when needed

Since airplane mode is actually supposed to turn off wifi as well, I suspect turning wifi back on can sometimes trigger the radio to activate since you technically are no longer in airplane mode.
That said, if you are normally in a good wifi area I would recommend setting the wifi sleep policy to never if you can.

I'm gonna bet anything the bar you saw was actually WiFi and you'd just inadvertently associated with an open WiFi connection while on the train.
FWIW, I've never found my CDMA radio set unintentionally out of Airplane Mode (where my Xoom stays 95% of the time).

Airplane mode disables the radio... or not?

Yesterday I had my phone on airplane mode all day while at work. I don't have any verizon reception there leading to a dead battery by noon. Around 4PM i got a text message. Wondering if this may have somehow taken 8 hours to trickle from the radio through my phone I confirmed the time she sent the message. Around 4PM. Anyone have any explanations for this other than Google turning the radio on to spy on me at random times of the day?
I placed my Incredible in Airplane mode and sent text messages from both inside and outside the VZW network. None got through until I placed it back in regular mode. I also travel quite a bit and it has never gotten an email or SMS while I had it in airplane mode.
Perhaps, at the time you got the message, you had somehow activated the radio.

WIFI and 3g

Hi,
I just got the focus couple days ago and have a question:
when you use the WIFI connection (at my house for example), does the phone turn off the 3G? does it use both? how does it work?
3G still remains on/connected providing your carrier and phone support 3G. when wifi is on and connected, it takes over 3G connection for data till you disconnect wifi again.

Yes and no.
There's a bit of a design flaw in WP7 that is catching many users by surprise.
What you're saying is correct when you're using the phone. WiFi takes precedence over 3G for data.
But, and this is the surprise, when the phone goes to sleep (mine's set to the maximum of 5 min), it turns the WiFi off, meaning 3G takes over.
Many people learn this the hard way, because they'll start some large download and leave the phone alone. At some point, the phone goes to sleep (the display turns off, basically), which turns off the WiFi, and now your download is switched to complete via 3G. Many people are wondering on the various forums why they leave their phone (say overnight) thinking it's on WiFi, and wake up to a surprise data usage number on 3G.
If your wireless router has a status screen to monitor live connections (I use DD-WRT, which does), you can see this behavior for yourself.
It gets better! If you're a "normal" user who plugs in your WP7 to charge up the battery overnight, you'll notice you can't turn the phone off. So, without taking any specific action, you have absolutely positively no choice but to burn 3G usage during the time period that the phone's plugged in, but not in actual use.
The workaround, if you're really tight on data usage, is to turn off your cell/3G manually, or switch to Airplane Mode, or stick your phone in a lead-lined box (okay, maybe not lead, but you get the point).
Brad.
I am frustrated with this too. I wish there was a simple toggle switch, application , that would simply turn one of them on and the other off without going into settings everytime.
This is very interesting (and a little worrying). How can I check my data usage from the phone?
Data usage
Dial *3282# and hit call
A text will come in with usage.
I make a habit of turning 3G off unless I need it, just to avoid 3G being used over WiFi or apps auto updating.

correction:: When you plug in your phone for charging the wifi stays ON even during standby, so 3G data is not used during this period.
@pigue
"Dial *3282# and hit call
A text will come in with usage."
That didn't work for me... I'm in Canada on Rogers. Is the number different up north?
im having problem with my 3g data.brought in my phone to my service provider.they couldnt fix my data because they were looking for the proxy and port.but they can only the apn settings.pls need help.im paying for data and im not able to use it.

Thanks for that clarification. I spent a bit of time yesterday monitoring my WiFi connections and it appears as though you're quite correct, WiFi does stay on the phone's when plugged in. That's a tolerable workaround.
Pity none of this is actually documented, and we're all forced to figure this out for ourselves.

I read about this in the documentation for the wifi sync somewhere. Can't remember if was M$ documentation, though.

WiFi stays ON even when in sleep mode

Something very curious has happened the last week or so.
The Wifi stays on, even when the phone is in sleep mode. It is evident when I unlock, the wifi symbol on the status bar doesn't bleep (reconnecting), but stays solid (connected). Of course that could be an operating system displaying error, but it's not; functionality is there, wifi stays on, device connected to the internet. And I'm not talking about the short amount of time that the wifi stays on after locking the phone. I'm talking I'm receiving notification etc as if I was using data.
I noticed it when, after waking up in the morning, I realised a massive battery drop (from 65% to 27%) overnight, although I keep my phone on airplane mode at nights.
As I haven't recently used any mods, regedits etc, and I haven't updated or flashed any rom (btw I'm on debranded stock 8107, with KK2), I can attribute this weird but very interesting behaviour to 2 possible things:
a. I installed some app, possibly homebrew, that somehow (even the dev didn't know about that) keeps running keeping wifi awake under lockscreen
b. Maybe it's because I'm on Airplane mode. I kept on being on Airplane mode from the moment I noticed it (as I have input my SIM to another phone). I should note though that there is a sim in the phone, I'm just on Airplane mode. Is that a known feature? Wifi stayin on under lockscreen on Airplane mode? I don't think so, as I would have noticed all that time (I keep my phone on that mode a lot).
That behaviour has persisted after soft-resets (reboots) and battery charges. The only hardware change I made the last week was using a non OEM replacement battery (the ones that reboot the phone when connected to the charger). But I'm using the original battery.
I should note it consumes about 4% of battery life for every hour, quite viable.
thats weird, but to some ppl, like me, i'd be happy if this happens, would love wifi staying on in sleep mode.
but, the opposite happens with mostly everyone
Even more curious thing that I found out today. When the phone is SWITCHED OFF, and wifi was on before switching the phone off, I have battery drop (almost the same as if being switched on with wifi on, around 3-4% per hour, in my instance from 43% went to 11% when I switched the phone on).
I don't know if the (original) battery has been messed up, so the battery index is not reliable (the reason I bought replacements was that in a span of 1 month, I was not treating it right, a lot of charging, heavy operation simultaneously, resulting in excess battery heating etc), or for some reason the use of the fake battery messed up the software part (both battery metering and WiFi stayin on)
I'll do so more testing and I'll report. Has anyone tried to go to Airplane mode and switch on Wifi, to check if it stays on under lockscreen?
It stopped today... weird!
... And it happened again, this time I think it might have been triggered by Audible, I might make a video as a proof.
EDIT: I was making that video, and realized on cam that it stopped happenning, and then I realized I had flashed beforehand the KK4 firmware. What a douche! If it happens I'll try to capture it on camera
When the data connection is OFF (like when you activate airplane mode) wifi remains connected even when you lock the phone.

No that doesn't normally happens, unless you have an app running under lockscreen and using WiFi (like a music streaming app)

AT&T S4 stock OS 5.0.1 - wifi turns itself off moment after turning it on

I don't get what is going on here. I tap the wifi button in either quick settings or wifi settings, it shows on/green briefly (0.5sec), then switch slides back to off. I disabled tasker, thought something wacky could be going n there in my modes, but problem persists. Today I finally noticed that putting phone in airplane mode, then turning wifi on worked, wifi stayed on. After turning airplane mode off, now wifi keeps turning itself off again
Power saving is off
Wifi Smart network switch is off
In advanced Wifi settings:
notification off
passpoint off
sort by strength
keep wifi in during sleep is always
always allow scanning is on ( I think I have tried changing this in the past couple weeks and no effect)
autoconnect to at&t hotspots is on
I did some searching but couldn't find anything relevant. I have been burning up mobile data because of this! Any ideas?

Heavy Standby Drain in Airplane Mode with WiFi-Calling

Can someone confirm if this issue exists on their device?
I live in an area with no cell service so I put my device in airplane mode and use WiFi Calling. This worked great for my OnePlus 5T. Now with my 6T I get very heavy battery drain when I do the same. Somewhere between 2 and 4 percent an hour. If I have good cell reception and airplane mode off I don't get any standby drain, like it should be. I have attached a screenshot of the drain while my phone was in standby. The red boxes highlight when it was in airplane mode with WiFi Calling.
I would like to figure out if it is just my device with the issue or if everyone is affected. I am on MetroPCS if that makes any difference.
Trying to figure out if this has to do with Magisk, or maybe my DTIM and Beacon intervals I set in my router. No apps are holding wakelocks, phone is active less than 5% when screen off. I will factory reset if a few people state that they do not have this issue.
Can someone reproduce these steps and let me know if you get heavy standby drain?
1. Enable WiFi Calling.
2. Turn airplane mode on.
3. Turn WiFi back on.
4. Make sure you are connected to WiFi Calling.
5. Check current battery level.
6. Turn screen off and leave phone for an hour or more.
7. Check to see if battery went down more than 1%.
Thank you!
In case anyone else has this issue it seems that the heavy drain was due to a DTIM interval of 50 that I had set on my access point. Setting it back to the default of 1 seems to have stopped the heavy standby drain.
I was thinking of buying a OP6T and using WiFi calling as I have no cell/4G coverage at home to try and avoid standby drain issues I have had with previous android phones. Stupid question, why do you need to enable aeroplane mode? Does the phone not switch automatically to WiFi calling when it finds no cell signal like iPhones do? Surely forgetting to turn off aeroplane mode causes problems. What are your experiences in general with WiFi calling on this phone? What sort of battery drain are you looking at overnight using WiFi calling? Do you have any other tips for minimising standby drain when you have no cell coverage?

I enable airplane mode to prevent the phone from draining looking for cell service that it will never find. It will automatically switch to WiFi-calling but it will still constantly scan for cell signal just wasting battery, all phones operate like this.
Wi-Fi calling works great for this phone. The only issue I have is that MMS for T-Mobile/MetroPCS does not work. Calling and SMS work 100%.
I usually loose between one and three percent batter overnight (about six to eight hours) with airplane mode on with Wi-Fi on and Wi-Fi calling connected.
To minimize standby drain with no cell service just put your phone in airplane mode and then turn Wi-Fi back on so that Wi-Fi calling connects. This tip would work with pretty much every phone.
I hope this helped!
Thanks for the information. Did WiFi calling work automatically on your phone or did you have to contact your airtime carrier to set it up? Can you please confirm that with aeroplane mode on you can make/receive phone calls and send/receive sms messages. I need to stay in touch and have good battery life, not one at the cost of the other. I don’t really send mms messages so that is not a problem. What is the DTIM interval you mention on your router/AP and how does this affect the phone? I will be choosing between OPT6 and the P20 Pro and I am concerned about brightness levels on OPT6 as screen seems very dim. I understand google has made changes to the brightness slider in android Pie but I had to have the brightness at 100% where normally it would be at about 50-60% on other phones. Is this something you find a problem or does the adaptive brightness learn your habits?

WiFi calling worked right away with my phone provider, MetroPCS. All I had to do was use their app to set my E911 number for emergency purposes, I am in the US by the way. Some carriers may have to contact their support to enable the feature for your account, I cannot say for any other carriers than MetroPCS.
I can confirmed that airplane mode with Wi-Fi calling works 100% for calling and SMS. The MMS issue seems to just be an issue with the US carriers T-Mobile and MetroPCS from what I have seen. Just make sure you turn Wi-Fi back on after enabling airplane mode.
You can look up what the DTIM interval is on Google if you are interested in it. Basically its how often the router will include a message to wake up the Wi-Fi on your phone to process messages. I had mine set to 50 or 100 beacon intervals and that was causing high standby drain. Pretty much every router defaults that setting to one so you shouldn't have to worry about that. I currently have mine set to three with no issues.
As for the brightness slider it works great for me. I think it's a little on the right side most of the time, some people say it's too dark sometimes, it's all subjective to the person and how they use their phone. Personally I think the new brightness slider is a huge improvement over the old versions. You have a lot more control of the brightness at lower levels so you are able to better set your phone in low light environments. Also the screen gets plenty bright at 100%. I have not had issues using my phone outdoors in bright sunlight. As for learning your habits with the brightness, it does seem to do that to some extent but don't expect it to be magically right all the time.
Thanks very much for all your help. Have a great New Year.
