[Q] ec05 /system "out of memory" error - Epic 4G General

Seems this is popping up again. I've tried to relace my /system/etc hosts file, and both root explorer and adb show I'm out of memory, with root explorer showing 184k left.
What got changed from eb13 to ec05?
I've searched, and others have had problems, but none of them got into the specifics of how to fix it.
Thanks!

I got bit by this.
rm some junk
Code:
Asphalt5_DEMO_ANMP_Samsung_D700_Sprint_ML.apk
FreeHDGameDemos.apk

Freaking GENIUS!!! I didn't even thing about that. Looks like they added more crap andtook up just enough space to screw me. That 5mb demo is GoNE!....stupid keyboard....
Edit: now that the 5mb file is gone, it freed up enough for my hosts to update, but something wanted that space. I had 2mb free after removing a 5mb file. LOL thanks again!

You're welcome!

Also, do you need both sprint navigation and google maps?

Getting Parsing errors?

I did normal nandroid backups everytime i make changes to the phone.
Howerver I Was using root explorer and was deleting things out of /data/data because Fresh1.1 doesn't use it/have things that I wanted to take out.. such as the data file for NFL, widgets..etc.
So I deleted all these. Thinking it was fine. And I still think it has no affect but when I went to install a apk from the sd card I get a parsing error.
At first I thought it might have been just that one file... but I uninstalled better root emulator and then tried to reinstall it and got that error msg.
So I reverted back to a backup I knew is good, but get the same error when trying to install APK from the sd card get the parse error.
Thanks,
-Nigel
Um... Go back to your last good nandroid... And delete the apks through ADB... (the correct procedure... Not how you did it.) Search the forums for "removing sprint apps" and follow the directions..
What it sounds like you did was mess up the directory structure.

I have removed the apps via ADB but what I am saying is there is still data about the programs in the data/data directory. I deleted that stuff not thinking that it might affect it... Guess it did..lol not sure though..
Going to delete it via ADB and see what happens after I wipe the phone.
All nandroid backups that I know are good are still giving me the same error.

Wow, looks like the memory card was the culprit...???
I changed out to a different 4 gb card and all the programs that were failing are installing just fine...
I was using my RedHat machine at work so I wonder if **** got screwed up?
Welp... maybe looks like no restore for me..lol
-Nigel
Wow.. That sucks man, sorry.
Did you pull your SD card while the phone was running? (assuming you have a2sd)?

I got the same errors trying to restore paid apps into flipz 2.0.1 ROM yesterday. Im certain its not a SD card issue but I don't know how to move forward. I am going to D/L the Eris 2.1 ROM and see if my apps how up there. If not i guess i will just deal with it. Not sure my apps2sd was working in that one either because my internal memory kept going down when I D/L an app, but I had way less apps than on Modaco and my internal mem never went down. *shrug* oh well, lets check out this 2.1
Na I never pulled the card out while phone was on.
Not sure if my linux box at work did it or the fact that I was deleting files from /data/data in root explorer... I think it's the second thing that I was doing... :-(
I did end up doing a factory restore last night and redoing it. This time though when I was deleting programs I also did the proper way in adb shell to delete the files in /data/data. I can't get over even if you delete the APKs/odex in system/apps, it still leaves files and a data base file in the data/data directory.
Anywho, so far everything is running great and I freed up even more memory on the other partition because of the data/data and I can't get over how fast the phone is!
w00t w00t!

FYI,
I figured out how to get my apps to restore on the 2.0.1 flipz ROM. I had to go into titanuim backup and go to problems, which downloaded an updated busybox. Once I did that I went and tried to restore a paid app and WHOOO WHOOO, it worked.

can we get the htc news widget on the phone?

i pushed it on with adb, it shows up in root explorer now, but not in the widgets list. anyway to make this work?
can you send me the file? i would like to try some attempts...
i jsut copied the file to my sdcard and installed it via root explorer...worked like a charm...is the file you have themed?
EDIT: My bad for some reason (it must be late) i thought i read Google News widget...I do want to get the HTC news widget on my phone also...

you installed the HTC news widget right on the phone? the one i tried wouldn't install.
i got the NewsReader.apk installed and opened...now trying to figure out how to get the widget...
anywho, i successfully modified and then pushed the modified News and Weather (GenieWidget) onto the phone. i themed it to match my FeedR widget.
tried to post a screen cap but it's not letting me. something about being a new member.
i have the widget.apk, but not the NewsReader.apk. maybe that's why it's not working. we need to share files. lol
here is the link for the newsreader.apk

the app itself does nothing but force close for me. are you getting the same result?
do we maybe also need the odex file?
i was just going to say that....i am going to check...but the rom that i have is deodexed...do you have odex files?

i do not have the odex files. i'm giving up for now. lol hopefully somebody can figure it out. i'm good with my skinned geniewidget for now.
You say your rom is deodexed... you're running a fully deodexed rom on DI? Did you build this yourself, or...?
I have some ideas for the news widget, but I'd like to see newsreader working first.
Thanks!
I posted progress..
I posted progress on the same thread in the apps section. I rooted and pulled de-odexed files from an evo build and pushed them to the system/app/ directory, i then cleared the data in HTC Sense app and the widget and icon showed up. The problem is that they force close. You need 3 files
RSS.apk
NewsReader.apk
com.htc.NewsReaderWidget.apk
I don't think it will make any difference to use odex'd files. Usually it is better to have de-odex'd files to install. The files must be on /system/app/ directory in order to even show up and launch. I hope that a dev is able to take a better look at the androidmanifest.xml in the app or use logcat to see what the hell is going on.
If you want to write to the /system/app/ directory,
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
mv /sdcard/RSS.apk /system/app/RSS.apk
(etc...)
then applications-->manage-->HTC Sense -->clear data...
But again, FC's will occur until someone is able to look at the manifest and alter it. I looked at the MinSDK for this app and it is the same as the DInc, otherwise I would've changed that part with a Hex editor myself.
Hope someone is able to do this, we would all be one step closer to a smaller Evo, lol. (I really don't like holding a "kindle" to my ear anyways, lol!)
Red.
what errors do you get that cause the force closures? (logcat from adb)
Updating the manifest files isn't hard, but requires resigning... did you need to resign the evo files after deodexing?

I didn't need to resign because the .apk files I pulled were from a build that was de-odex'd in the "Evo Android Development" Section. Root Explorer recognizes the files right away, but because they need to be system files, they can't be installed like other apps. I don't have a logcat because I really don't dev too much, but would be thrilled if others tried this.

File permissions for system/app? Please read!

I've been going crazy trying to get DI07 on this thing. Out of a bonehead move of trying to save some space pre-update, I've managed to delete my SprintZone.apk from system/app. Needless to say, my update stalled because it required the apk to be there for everything to go as planned.
I've gone as far as hard resetting the phone just to get the over the air prompt back... and nothing.
I've read threads about how to attain the update manually and have my update.zip in the proper placement for recovery.
I also have my needed sprint apk ready... though even though i have the application installed, it still gives me a discrepancy when i run the update.
I've read that it must be in a very specific directory in order for the process to work. As far as I've read, everything points to system/app.
I've become so frustrated that it's pushed me to root the device and purchase root explorer from the market.... so there's only one thing left to do right? Just copy over the file?
The thing is.. I'm not able to copy anything over because as far as its told me, its a read only directory.
I've fiddled with permissions, but even then, they revert back to normal.
Is there any possible way i can copy my sprintzone.apk over to that directory? Preferably without the need for a computer?
Any kind of input or guidance would be much appreciated.
Thank you for reading.

Says I am out of space and can't install apk when I have 800+mb left, why?

I'm not even installing a game, just another app that takes a few mb's.
I go into storage and see I have 800mb left.
What's the problem?
it says: "_____ couldn't be installed. Free up some space and try again."
i have faced this problem, try to uninstall the app u install before this message

i'm actually having problem with only one app- vplayer.
can anyone help?
I can install other apps no problem. I'm trying to download vplayer from the play market, and it just wouldn't install. It says not sufficient storage, but I do have sufficient storage, and I can install other apps no problem.
I had vplayer previously, but uninstall it, is there anyplace I can clear the data? this is quite frustrating
You can try deleting the .odex file for that app under /data/app (I think you might need a root explorer)

if you are rooted, otherwise
open Terminal
Code:
su
cd /data
cd /app
ls
rm (packagename.odex)
ls will allow u to see the list of all the files in that folder and help u type the exact name with ease.
Just download lucky patcher it will automatically remove unused odex files

Having an issue with memory as well.. The amount of data I have doesn't equal what its says I have left.. Running cm 10.1 rc2 where has all the space gone? I'd this a memory leak?

[Q] help with disabling OTA update

I'm with T-Mobile if that helps or changes anything, running 4.2.2. Now, I've gotten my phone to stop bugging me to install the OTA update. But the problem is the OTA update is still downloading in the background, it's just that I'm not being bugged by my phone to update it (i.e. there's no icon showing up in the notification bar). It becomes a sort of "silent update." So why is this a problem for me?
Because I'm on T-Mobile's cheapest plan which is the 500mb data plan. Each time the OTA downloads it eats up 155mb. And twice already this billing cycle it's done it, so that's 310mb of data wasted.
There are posts saying to use Titanium Backup Pro and freezing an app called Software Update MUC, and another post referring to the file as Software Update 2.3.0.5, but on my phone (using TB Pro) there's no file starting with "Software" anything.
So how do I stop my phone from downloading the OTA all together? Please help. Thanks.
Just install the update, that will make it stop for good
Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk
Sorry, forgot to mention doing that won't work. For some reason my phone doesn't properly install OTA updates. I don't mind being stuck on 4.2.2. I just want the OTA downloads to stop in the first place.
Give this a try...
If rooted, use a file manager like Root Explorer, go to System/Etc/Security, (mount R/W) and rename otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak
Reboot phone.

I've done that already. I renamed the file to otacerts.zip.back (instead of .bak). I assume that doesn't make any difference. I believe renaming the file is what is causing my phone to not show the OTA icon in the notification bar. But as I said, the issue for me is that my phone is still downloading the update itself.
Any other ideas?

I don't have that file in my system/app folder. What's wrong with my phone?????
On my phone, the file listed that comes before where lgfota.apk/odex should appear is LGEIME_THEME_BLACK.odex, and the file after that file is LGGallery.apk.

I don't have a system/priv-app folder, either. I'm on stock rom, but I removed as much bloat as I can, including certain apps I find no use for (e.g. double-tap, voice command, etc). Maybe this will help: I used Root Explorer's search feature and searched for "fota", and here's what I think are the most "relevant" results:
/lgdms.fota.rc
/lgdms.fota_update.rc
/etc/fota
/etc/permissions/com.lge.fota.xml
/system/framework/com.lge.fota.jar
/system/framework/com.lge.fota.odex
Does this help? Anyone?

I also got the same issue. Sprint here. I have renamed all files like otacerts.zip & lgfota.apk/odex, still it downloads the damn update.
