Android XML TextView and DP/DIP - Android Software Development

Started developing my first app for Android and all is going well regarding the java/program side of things but im having an issue regarding the layout.
I say app it's actually a homescreen widget. Im currently testing it using a Desire HD and my girlfriend has the GalaxyS
Code:
View on Desire HD:
----------------------
----------------------
Battery: 98%
Code:
View on GalaxyS:
---------------------
Battery: 98%
---------------------
The next moves regarding the size of the screen but is there anyway to position the text so it will stay where i need it too and not throw it all over the widget?
Im currently using a RelativeLayout with just the one TextView and using layout_left="20dp" and layout_bottom="100dp" to get the text to show correctly on my Desire.

Post your layout? Maybe it's just me, but I'm also not sure what the actual problem is or what it is you are trying to accomplish.

fullscreen sms widget idea

hey
i thought about an app or widget that could be programmed.
i would do the graphics for it.
i thought we could implement a new text message into one of the 7 home screens. that means that you maybe slide left and there is a full screen app where you can directly start writings a text message.
it would be nice if the bottom bar slides out and the app slides in while you are sliding to the screen.
anyone interested in developing this with me?

Windows Phone Android

Android Technical --
Android Technical just published "Windows Phone Android", a windows phone metro UI launcher for android. The lite version is now in the Android Market.
Lite version include:
Pin to front page tiles
remove from front page
uninstall apps
dark and lite themes
4 accent colors (Blue, Green, Red and Orange)
limited messages (on message area at the top of the screen)
status bar with mobile signal, wifi, bluetooth, battery status etc.
informational tiles, animated screens, status messages and other features will be included in the regular versions.
At the end of the day, if you really want a Windows Phone, you should go get one. You can get one here from Microsoft.

Not too bad! Now i know it states for screen res of 480x800, and my eris's screen is smaller, but can you fix the tiles misalignment? It seems the first and last row shift to the left just the slightest. This is what i have been waiting for!

Confirmed and working on the Tmobile HTC G2 2.2 stock. Now my phones screen looks like my wifes HD7. I cant wait to show her. LOL. I cant wait for the updates and pro version. Good work on this app.
There is a bug on the first tile issue. We'll look into it. We also noticed that we have issues with ldip (240x320) devices too. Thanks for the feedbacks so far.
Looking Gr8 thank you I have been try to achieve this look all month!! please keep us posted with updates looking forward to donate version!
on my vibrant 2.2 loading the full list of apps as well as pinning to start is just too slow. Is this only on mine?
Works amazingly. Nice and fast on 2.1 fascinate. Thank you so so much. Can't wait for pro version

I'm loving this launcher, and I've been looking forward to someone doing this. I've tried the light version and anticipating the pro versions, but I was just wondering (if you haven't already thought about it yet) are you going to make it able for the user to chose it's own tiles to represent an app. For example, I don't use android messenger, I use handcent. So when I pinned Handcent to the quick start it has the blue icon and it's called Handcent, and I would want it to be a live tile and just call messaging.
Just bringing this to your attention, looking forward to the pro version. Keep it up.

I think you are the second person with vibrant that is telling us that it is slow. We tested on devices that we have. Nexus One, T-Mo Comet, and LG Optimus T. I will see what I can do. Even on the Comet (528mhz) it is working so... something might be wrong with your phone but I would love to see it in person to see the actual speed differences.

Our thoughts are to keep the light simple and plain (thus lite and free). More of a demo version if you want to think of it that way. We will have the regular version with some user enabled features and pro with our own live tiles and hubs and such (eg, new contacts screens, new music player etc). Nothing is fully set in stone yet. Just wanted to see how people will like the idea. Considering it took 2 people to code this in about 30 hours each, it's not bad. But we do android rapid prototyping and deployment for a living though.
Is there supposed to be a battery indicator in the status bar? I don't have one. And signal doesn't really respond there. Also I have to swipe up or down to see anything other than the time. Which I think is kinda cool actually. Just wondering if that's normal. Thanks, and fantastic work.

Very cool...I like it...! Running it on a HTC HD2 with a Desire ROM and it runs great!

That is normal. Just the way WP7 does that status bar. It is missing battery indicator. We will put it up with the next update. The status bar comes down for 8 sec on real WP7. Ours does the exact same thing (sans animation)
Really good. Works very good on my galaxy s! Waiting for the pro version! I'll offer you more than a coffe!
Pretty slick! Can't wait to see some new features. It'd be nice to use custom icons, say if we use another app for our dialer or messenger, or even for completely different apps! Custom colours would be nice, too.
Found a bug though, if you open the settings and exit it, and go back, there are some weird glitches, you'll see. (this is if you're not using it as a launcher)
EDIT: A page for widgets would be awesome if you could work that out, or at least a way to quickly change settings(wifi, gps, etc)
EDIT2: A way to move tiles around would be good.

[Widget] Moogly to-do widget needs testers

Hi everyone! Im the developer of Moogly, a simple but useful todo list widget that started as a project for Honeycomb. The pr is after the break.
There have been reports that it doesnt work properly on some devices! If someone could be so kind as to try the Lite version and if it doesnt stretch properly, send me some screenshots and log files!
You can also post issues at the main thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202211
Thanks in advance!

I will try to re-Install but?
Try a reboot. It should help.
Working perfectly for me! Thanks, this is absolutely top class.
Updated. Added scrolling on honeycomb and hide complete tasks option.
Are hidden tasks working ok?
Any issues to report?
Is anyone having issues with the widget showing up in app widget picker after first install?
works great nice dont like buttoms
I however do like the buttons, they go with anything.
Any issues to report?
Hi guys. There will be a nice update for you tomorrow! Color coding and sorting!
Has anyone had a chance to do some testing?
Downloaded and installed Lite version just fine. Created several widgets in the widgets drawer like advertised.
Will work on it some more for you later today.
I can say, offhand, I do not like how it takes you back to the entire menu system when you want to enter a note. Would have been much nicer to just have the note window open.
But, if I have other things, I'll just PM you.

What entire menu system? You must be doing something wrong mate... clicking the plus icon will open the input dialog.
Also, please do not pm me. These threads exist so that others may benefit from my wisdom, it is the essence of the word forum.
Any issues with 0.9.1?

Hmm try to reboot your watch, I haven't coded anything time zone related, it should take the time directly from the system.
Is your time set manually or automatically according to the Timezone?

If you know how to program in android you just need to download their sdk to see their sample codes on how to get time and date info, after that all you need to do is to stylize and colorize what you want (increase font size, change color, change positions, ... etc)
nice clock face

thank you ..very nice watch faces !
Wanted to say thanks for such a nice watchface. Have a couple suggestions if you dont mind,
The colour options are great ..perhaps make the C more discreet somehow e.g. some pretty icon instead
And then if you could squeeze in a brief weather status in the lower section ...well then this would be perfect for me

[QUERY] I am also getting that issue where these clock faces sometime start to lag ..and only fix is to reboot the watch, anyone know how to resolve this ...this is my favourite watch face !
I found out switching the color will bring it back up to correct time when it lags

[Q] How put logo in ActionBar

Hello Guys,
My english is not very good, i'm sorry for that.
I'm developing an app and now i want to have an icon in my actionbar.
i cannot give an example (security from XDA) but de usual icon top left most apps have. Now i only have the title, but on the left side of the title i want the icon.
I tried this:
getActionBar().setIcon(R.drawable.my_icon);
And i tried with android manifest to add: Android:icon and Android:logo to the activity and many other things But none of them works for me.
If i watch videos it looks like the icon should be there by default, but not in my case.
I hope somebody can help me.
Thanks in advance.

Are you using the new Toolbar API?
Thats what i think. I'm not sure, how can i check that?
Do you mean AppCombat?
You need to add the android:icon attribute under the application element, not under the activity
Also the design guidelines state that the icon shouldn't be used if you are using the Toolbar API - there are other ways to get your apps branding across to the user.
Thanks for the answers.
But i tried to add the android:icon attribute to the application element instead of the activity element. (And i tried both)
But in none of this situations the icon will appear.
If i look on Google and Youtube i see many people creating a actionbar and have an icon by default. Strange that i don't have this.
I hope that you can help me, thanks.

ActionBar != Toolbar. By default the new Toolbar API does not have an icon - this is due to the new design spec (Material Design) that the Toolbar was created for.
You need to find out if you are using the new Toolbar API or the old ActionBar API.
If you're using the Toolbar API then as I already said, it goes against the guidelines to have an icon in the Toolbar now as the primary function of it used to be to get the app branding across to the user which there are now other ways to do using material design (using a custom color palette etc).
If you are really stubborn and insist on going against the guidelines you have to use the below code to set an icon on the Toolbar:
Code:
toolbar.setLogo(R.drawable.ic_launcher);
Thanks for your answer, it helped me.
Now i use:
PHP:
getSupportActionBar().setIcon(R.drawable.ic_launcher);
Now i want the left arrow on the left side of the icon, and using:
PHP:
getSupportActionBar().setDisplayShowHomeEnabled(true);
But it won't work. Can you help me with that?
Thanks!
