[Android 2.1+, 2011.10.10] Omniscience 0.9.2 - Android Software Development

Here is my first Android app, Omniscience :
This is a highly configurable widget to show you what you need to know or remember :
Calendars
Tasks
Weather
Emails (to remind you of replies you have to make)
Notes
etc.
It has (or will have) quite a few assets compared to existing apps of the same kind :
Stock look to better integrate into your home screen
Very user-friendly interface
Supports more than tasks and calendars
Highly configurable
A nice tutorial for beginners
Templates to recreate your favorite configuration quickly with automatic backup in the cloud
Compatible with Android version from 2.1 with ldpi, mdpi and hdpi resolutions (I'll work on tablets as soon as I can)
NEW - Scrolling support
For now, it supports the following apps:
Google Calendar
GMail (seems broken with recent GMail versions)
Google Weather (through the Genie widget)
Astrid
Facebook (birthdays only) (broken by version 1.5.3 )
Springpad
Gtasks
Google Reader
Evernote
SMS & MMS
Seesmic (twitter & facebook)
Of course, I intend to add the most popular applications of each category.
I initially designed Omniscience for my own needs (as I tend to forget everything ...), but I am hoping for your feedback to steer my in your direction too (I have created a page on GetSatisfaction! for that purpose).
When the app is mature enough and the beta is over, I plan to offer a lite version with Google Calendar only (and without advanced features) and a paid version priced at 1$.
Thanks in advance for all testers
PS : this app uses the GreenDroid library, thanks to Cyril for his awesome work!

Dude! I never liked any calender widget, but this one is awesome.
It's already very good but if I'm to suggest an improvement, I would say add a separator between days.
Keep up the good work.

Updated to 0.3.2 with a new option to show a separator between days

I've moved the thread to Android Software Development forum. It's better here as you are offering a free beta version at the moment. It can stay in here until it comes out of beta.
(also, you don't meet the minimum requirements to post in the Paid Apps forum)

looks like its going in the right direction! VERY NICE WIDGETS!
just one thing (you propably already want to do that anyways).
for launchers that dont support scrollable widgets, please add option to limit number of emails listed when i activate gmail support the only thing i see is emails nothing else
regards

Updated to 0.3.3 with an option in GMail to limit the number of emails displayed.
Keep the suggestions coming !

Love the update, this is now my official calender widget

If you could add gTask integration I would pay for it. I've found no widget with both my Google Calendar events and my Google Notes deadlines together and it would be just what I need.
Working fine on my Hero, 2.1 original Orange ROM. May I ask how often should the widget update? I find it doing so every few minutes, maybe cause I just installed it.

The widget has no refresh interval ; instead, it watches for content changes that are notified by the apps you have on your widget. Unfortunately, some of them are pretty aggressive with content change notifications (even if nothing really changes).
As for gTask I will try to include it in the next version.
Thanks for the feedback!

maybe wrong question,
Can you develop a Android Chatting APP for me?
I will pay money for this work.
(I am try to find developer but still I can't find any developer )

Omniscience looks great, but I couldn't get it to install on my phone! :-(
CM7 running on an HTC Legend

brypie, what do you mean when you say it doesn't install? Are you getting an error during the installation of the apk?

Dropbox link seems to be down.
[Edit] Nevermind. Downloaded! I'll provide feedback in a few.

Updated to 0.4 with GTasks and templates!

I really like how the email and calendar icon color match their label/calendar color, that is very nice. One thing I would like, would it be possible to have an option to only show new/unread emails? I don't know how many people would want that as default, but an option for it would be really nice.
Also, how is the weather supposed to be displayed? It isn't displayed on my D2. (not a big deal, I am just wondering)
I like the app, especially the way it gets data - it doesn't even show up in my battery usage.
EDIT:
So I found another thing I thought may be better....
I went to delete a widget because I wanted to try something, so deleting if off my home screen deleted it from in Omniscience. Then, I created a new one but hit cancel after configuring, when given the choice on how big to make it on the homescreen, and it is still listed in Omniscience, although there is no way (I know of) to use it.
Maybe when you long press on a widget in the app, have "delete" listed with refresh? I don't know how useful it would be to have widgets you're not using, and then be able to pick them when you add a widget to the home screen (that was my initial idea, but I think being able to delete might be better). I don't really know.
Anyways, thank you for the app, I like the ability to change it to transparent.

Thanks for your feedback phoffer!
First, google weather should display one line for each day, with the temperature range and the weather description. If you don't see anything, try launching the "News & weather" app manually to see if it helps. If it doesn't, you can PM me your logs (logs can be retrieved through an option in the preference menu of Omniscience).
As for widgets being still visible after cancelling, I believe the problem comes from Sense. When a widget creation is cancelled or the widget is deleted, the home screen is supposed to send an intent to reflect that. Sense does not do so in the first case however ; since I store widget information in a database, I rely on that message to clean up.
Furthermore, the app checks at startup that the widgets still exist according to the Android AppWidgetManager. If they are not, they are deleted.
This means that everytime you cancel widget (any widget, not just Omniscience) creation during size choice, you are actually polluting your system with phantom widgets (since they still exist for AppWidgetManager). As a side note, ADW has the same problem.

Updated from 0.3 to 0.4 and now I get FC every time I start the app. Uninstalled, reinstalled and still FC.

ishkarioth, can you PM me your logs using a tool like logcollector ?
EDIT: nevermind, I found and fixed the bug in 0.4.1.

HTC Hero - Éclair [2.1] Information

HTC HERO ECLAIR 2.1
written by MysteryHero
After the success of HTC Hero's debut, it is time that we are all getting ready to update our beloved device. HTC Hero will become one of the very first Android phones to power the new 2.1 Android firmware. HTC Hero has truely made it's debut unique through proudly presenting the features such as the new Sense UI from HTC, but you may be wondering what has actually changed in this new firmware update? So let's begin and take a exclusive preview on the upcoming features.
This post will be updated regulary and you can even re-post this article with my authors credit.
Futhurmore if you wished to contact me, please PM me via XDA-Developers Original topic at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5080445#post5080445
Please note that all this information is gathered from the Lox v1.4 rom which can be found at HTCpedia, information may change while the article develops.
Bluetooth submited by habibas
You may now send files to other phones but this is restricted to the type of file your media is.
Browser
The browser hasn't been updated alot, but there has been a few tweaks that make it easier to use. Firstly the navigation tab above is now attached to the top instead of overlaying the top page. This has solved the annoying google problem where you would not be able to select the navigation links under the overlay for example, On Google's homepage you couldn't select the mail/news/images link until the page fully loaded.
Another minor UI change is featured in the loading bar, the input url box will now feature a sparkling green bar which will fill up as the page loads, this has removed the thin green loading bar below the screen in 1.5.
One final change which will effect the HTC browser is that the Google search in landscape mode will now function correctly. That's right folks! no more bouncing keyboard.
It seems the Flash has been improved, don't hold my word on it but it seems like it's running Flash 10? The lite version before didn't let me load Imeem's flash player but it seems like it's running like a charm now, Youtube desktop version also worked. Maybe not at it's best but it works.
Google Navigation
Googles GPS has finally arrived onto HTC HERO. You will ofcourse need to hack the application if you're from United Kingdom (Which works with Lox 1.4) You need to install the Voice data/ Nav Launcher and ofcourse the Maps 3685 (?) build? (I opted for non-rotted apk)
Home
The highly rumoured Landscape Rosie has been introduced, you can now rotate your Hero sideways. The clock, application short cuts will be left intact, and usable. Although phone panel on the right is not finished, the icons aren't properly positioned, but this should be fixed by HTC in a more recent build.
You can now pinch zoom the home screen and be welcomed by an overview of the seven different states. You can tap a screen to quickly change state which may come handy if you don't want to slide through multiple states.
Icons
New icons are presented in the Application menu:
Google Talk
Youtube
Maps
Market
Call History
Calculator
(HTC icons seems to be unchanged)
Loading
While the device loads, there is now a new spinning spindle. It looks alot better even if it is a small touch but makes it very nice.
Market
Updated to the new market, you can now see top paid, top free or all. It's more organised and the usability has improved overall. Expect to see a more friendly version of Googles Market.
Settings
The new settings menu have been organised into more precised catergories. This change was seen on the Droid and will be in 2.1. You can navigate through the settings easier and will be able to select some new options.
Sync
RRS Reader is inbuilt and you can read RRS feeds without installing any applications. You can also sync to Flickr and Google. HTC has also newly added sync options for Plurk, Exchange Active sync and Htc Facebook (Revised?).
Text-To-Speech
Text-to-Speech added, Google Navigation anyone? Yepp Text-to-speech is the library that is used with Google Navigation. You can now type text and it'll speak it out. You can also change/install new languages.
Weather Animation
Weather Animation makes a return in this new firmware. The removed feature in the revised 1.5 rom disappointed alot of users but it's now made it's return. The animation effect is basically a home screen effect inwhich when you greeted with weather animations occuring on your home screen which occurs if it's raining/snowing/lightning etc. Eye candy.
Notification Bar
There is a new icon for SD card, this will be shown once a memory card is inserted/loading/removed.
(Recent) The background of the Notification pull down is transparent, you can see through the overlay.
Messages
The Messages application has now been slightly updated, the text is larger. Although the people application isn't correctly working for me, I'm unsure wither it's actually for the better or worse since the text was completely fine before. Let's hope the final smooth build will fix some of the small problems introduced in this update.
Wallpapers
You can now select Wallpapers from your Home Gallery which includes all the original wallpapers in the default Android Gallery + the ones you add. You can also choose the Rosie wallpapers which have been left intact.
One feature that seemed amissed was the missing option of choosing a Rosie wallpaper for your lock screen, well good news! You can now select a Rosie wallpaper with a few simple clicks.
Widgets
There seems to be a new option to get more HTC widgets in the widget panel. This could be updates to the current widgets in the future or new skins (clock) or brand new widgets like the power control.
There is a new power control widget that can be added to your home screen. This widget is basically a quick switch for turning on/off the following: WiFi, Bluetooth, Mobile, Sync. You can also switch different brightness levels through the last button. (Dimmest, Normal, Brightest)
Untouched submited by JBNAquatics
Music Application
Calender
Slightly Modified submited by JBNAquatics
The call settings now have a "Silent" and a "Speaker" button that you can press directly like the Sprint Hero
Gmail appearance has been slightly modified but there are no new features
Camera and Camcorder has a slightly new appearance modification to match Donuts, but no new features
Rings extended (app) finally works on this ROM
You can now choose to link which accounts you want (Google, Facebook, or both)

the Lox ROM is already available, in fact you can download it at HTCpedia, but be warned as the ROM is not complete and it's not a final build. A more recent rom has been leaked by Kingklick but is only available for G1/Magic 32B.
Here is the link to Lox Rom 1.4: http://htcpedia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1417
Will the newer rom leave me with less usable memory on the device?
Pete
you forgot to mention the bluetooth has been enabled to send and recive files
but the type of the files are limited to the media only that's disappointing
Can you please explain what you mean by this??

Is there now weather animation under the clock?? Or do you mean there is animation when you are using the weather application?
Thanks

Yes, I believe I only had around 100mb when I first upgraded the firmware. However this might change as this is not the final build.

I just fired up my nandroid build and saw that the widget on the home screen can reproduce the same weather animation, therefore I think it's just an option to switch the animations on and off. However, the clock widget isn't really working, therefore there still could be hope.
The Bluetooth and Browser sections are somewhat mixed.
Alright here's what I've gathered from the posts on HTCPedia and from my own user experiences:
-Rings extended (app) finally works on this ROM
-You can now choose to link which accounts you want (Google, Facebook, or both)
-Music player is left untouched
-Camera and camcorder are left untouched (they do not have the "new" 1.6 Donut look)
-Calendar is also left untouched
-Gmail has a different look to it but virtually untouched
-The call settings now have a "Silent" and a "Speaker" button that you can press directly like the Sprint Hero
WPA2 Enterprise
Are WPA2-Enterprise Certificates supported in 2.1? I am wondering, because it was already built into 1.5, but when hitting the button "add certificate" it wouldn't work (Settings > Wireless > WLAN > Advanced > Security Certificates). This was obviously a bug. Does this work now, or was it removed?
what about the rumours that eclair will support 262k colors, and enhance the onscreen colors of the hero from 65k to 262k. can anybody confirm that?
i can't imagine this happening, but still wanted to ask

They have removed this, or re-located it to somewhere else. I've tried finding it but no luck

I thought this was aimed specifically at XPERIA 10, but I've really not noticed other than the menu may seem a bit crisper than before.
Have they managed to fix the alarm in this buld?
There was a bug on the current build that stops the alarm from working correctly. You turn it on and the alarm goes off but it doesn't make a sound at all, or nothing happens when it is supposed to go off.

Anyone have any information about when the official room with Android 2.1 wil be released?

Any idea which files? I asume jpegs and mp3s would be fine? Although perhaps I shouldnt assume anything!
The one thing I would like to see is the HTC slide to answer when receiving a call that was present on the Touch Diamond - slide left to answer slide right to reject!
Hi guys,
little offtopic question of you don't mind..
Can someone PM me what the normal price is for HTC Hero?
I'm using Kaiser and before Herald. but will switch
Thanks...
will htc hero eclair update provide the option to switch to standard android apps.
in example i think the default android calendar looks much much better than the htc sense calendar since htcs version has no week view and no timelines on monthview.
Is this possible? Or did htc at least add timelines to their calendar app?
I want rubber-band effect on all scrollable pages, e.g. settings.
another question:
will the 2.1 update swipe the old device again, like the first HTC Hero update did?
So this means setting up the phone completely from scratch again? Or is this an update which will keep the current settings/apps and so on...im afraid this is not the case

Official Android 2.2 update - changelog

Just thought to share my observations with everyone else here since HTC is notorious for not publishing their changelogs. I happen to have two Desire's – one with official Froyo released yesterday and one with 2.1 - update 1 (software number 1.21.405.2) . So before I upgrade the other phone I thought to do some comparison. So here it is…
Some highly anticipated features include:
• Apps to SD, the "Froyo" way
• 720p video recording
• Built-in Flash 10.1 support for web browsing
New items in Applications:
• App sharing
• News and weather
• Wi-fi hotspot
• Navigation
• Google search
• Videos
• Flashlight
Messaging:
• Larger message compose area with animated attach icon
• Character counter is now always present
• MMS slideshow
Keyboard:
• Language switch button
Widgets:
• "Profile" and "Ringtone" widgets from "More HTC widgets" list are now installed by default. Even if you don't need them you there is no need to uninstall them cause they are very small in memory size
• Calculator widget (4 styles)
• Hotspot switch
• One more style for Messages widget – full screen message list
Minor and major app changes:
• Gmail app now looks a lot better.
* Black top bar instead of gray (a place where your account name is displayed)
* sender picture displayed in message header
* labels are now colored just like in your browser
* Options to confirm delete, archive and send instead of just delete
* Auto advance can be set to newer, older or conversation list.
* Message text size can be set
* Option to notify once for new e-mail, not for every new massage• New version of Google Map 4.3.1 (which is still missing from the market, btw)
Settings:
• Sound and display settings are now separated and reorganized with few things added
• Display now auto rotates in three directions (cw, ccw, and portrait)
• "Manage Applications" section has undergone some nice changes. Now there are tabs: "Downloaded", "Running", "All" and "On SD Card". Every app can be transferred on SD card if enabled by the developer
• Portable Wi-Fi hotspot (also available in applications)
• Security settings now include Pattern lock along with Password and PIN lock. There is also an option to delay locking the phone after it goes to sleep.
Miscellaneous changes:
• Recent app list (long press home key) now looks a bit different, better design if you ask me
• New icons for those HTC switch widgets (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth…)
• When you turn on the display, first hardware buttons are lit and then screen is turned on, contrary to the previous ROM version… just a minor thing.
• Added a frame to caller picture
• Two buttons on caller screen mute and speakerphone now have small border
Bugs / issues /disappointments:
• I noticed a few bugs / glitches regarding full screen weather widget and messages widget after system boot. After connected to PC via USB, widges that display data (weather, messages, agenda, news) just reload data again. Also after dissconnect from PC the same story. During this full screen weather widget dies. This is serious bug!
• Right border is missing from Speakerphone button on caller screen (sometimes right border is missing from both buttons)
• Animated attach icon in new message rolls out a few buttons. Rightmost button (edit slideshow) is missing its bottom border.
• No sound notification for new mail?!
• Still there is no promised out of the box Divx support. Shame…
I don’t use social networking so I can not comment anything regarding these features. Please feel free to add more stuff to this list cause I am sure there are some more treats in there I overlooked, especially in Settings area.
Also let's fill the "Issues" section cause that may inspire HTC to perform a maybe minor update and fix few more things.
Best regards!

I think you should ask HTC that or look for it in official specifications. Sorry for not beeing very helpfull
this thread has already been made in the general section

[Q] New HD Sense UI

Will the HTC Evo 4g receive a update for the new sense ui? I have been wanting this implementation for a while now. Also what does HD in the new HTC Desire mean?
probably high definition, high definition is more of a buzzword then a term, technically the first "hd" tv was invented back around the 50s, its definitely above 480p (enhanced definition) but below the current standard of high definition (720i) the current trend of android phones support 800 x 480 while the highest standard for edtv i believe it 576p(pal resolution)
What's so HD about the HTC Desire? I mean it's like a beefed up verson of the Evo without the kickstand. Also I hope the new sense ui comes out soon!
are there any major differences? I can't tell by looking at some of the pictures out there. what is new in sense?
"-New flip clock animation. There also aren't that many clock widgets,
-There is a blocked callers app, HTC Hub app for your HTC Sense account. For people who just get this new phone, they have an App where they can transfer over their data from their other phone over a bluetooth connection.
-Messaging app: UI overhaul. You have an option for push messages. In the settings you have the option to forward messages to your phone or email addres. Inside the thread there is a sort of new view. It displays the contacts name and number at the same time.
-There is also an app that will link your contacts with the social networking websites, that was demonstrated in that video. It's nothing really new, it just gives you the option to link the twitter and facebook once you add a new contact to the phone.
-The personalize button is the same thing as long pressing on the screen, but it's more personal. A lot more options are put all together in the same place, but essentially the same thing.
-People Widget: There is a new People widget, and by default it displays the contact photos and their facebook/twitter status. But once you get a message or they update any one of those, it replaces the previous status. So if you got a text message, it would show up next to their name, you can tap it and be redirected to the messaging app.
-New Live Wallpaper: There is a wallpaper that you can set that will be based off of pictures you select, so that every time you unlock the phone or go back to the homescreen from any app, you see a new wallpaper. The default images on this rom are great, and i love seeing a new image, its my favorite wallpaper.
-Notifications: Inside your notification pulldown, it displays all recent apps, so you no longer have to hold down the home button, just drag down and select. Also, what htey didnt talk about is how if you're playing music, you have the option to pause the song from the notification pulldown.
-There is a power saver feature
-There is an option for the ringer to become quiet once the phone is moved, and for the ringer to become louder when it's in your pocket.
-New HTC Keyboard, and a new calibration app that looks sexy as hell
-HTC Skins
-Over all higher resolution
-Internet browser: No more fullscreen mode, but you have the refresh button and a new RSS button. Also, next to the RSS button is a button for bookmarking. YOu have the option to disable animated gif animations.
-This is true froyo, so it restores your apps when you load up the app, but only if you were on a version of froyo that had that option, like cyanogenmod
-for search, i never really used it so this may not be new, but you can search every single thing on your phone. i mean, down to a specific word in a text message
-this isnt on my rom but i remember seeing it..you had the option to have these nice power control widgets. one of them that i used was the wireless and settings widget. which contained htc sync, wifi, roaming, mobile network and a button that took you to the settings section under settings
-iPhone magnifying glass when it comes to editing text. It's not the exact same (obviously) it's a square."
I posted that on reddit some weeks ago, thats just some of the new stuff i noticed in the new rom

The new Sense UI is complete, because its already on the Desire HD and Z. Only things that is constantly being updated is the stuff for the HTC Hub. But thats just themes, ringtones, wallpapers, skins and whatnot.
New Sense = SEX.
I can't stop using it...
The Mail app and widget have also been greatly improved on the new Sense UI. It adds a universal inbox as well as batch actions. Much nicer to need only one Mail widget now on the homescreen for those people with mutliple email addresses.
i wish they would release an update to the sense ui for the non HD Desire :/

Not too bad! Now i know it states for screen res of 480x800, and my eris's screen is smaller, but can you fix the tiles misalignment? It seems the first and last row shift to the left just the slightest. This is what i have been waiting for!

Confirmed and working on the Tmobile HTC G2 2.2 stock. Now my phones screen looks like my wifes HD7. I cant wait to show her. LOL. I cant wait for the updates and pro version. Good work on this app.
There is a bug on the first tile issue. We'll look into it. We also noticed that we have issues with ldip (240x320) devices too. Thanks for the feedbacks so far.
Looking Gr8 thank you I have been try to achieve this look all month!! please keep us posted with updates looking forward to donate version!
on my vibrant 2.2 loading the full list of apps as well as pinning to start is just too slow. Is this only on mine?
Works amazingly. Nice and fast on 2.1 fascinate. Thank you so so much. Can't wait for pro version
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I'm loving this launcher, and I've been looking forward to someone doing this. I've tried the light version and anticipating the pro versions, but I was just wondering (if you haven't already thought about it yet) are you going to make it able for the user to chose it's own tiles to represent an app. For example, I don't use android messenger, I use handcent. So when I pinned Handcent to the quick start it has the blue icon and it's called Handcent, and I would want it to be a live tile and just call messaging.
Just bringing this to your attention, looking forward to the pro version. Keep it up.

I think you are the second person with vibrant that is telling us that it is slow. We tested on devices that we have. Nexus One, T-Mo Comet, and LG Optimus T. I will see what I can do. Even on the Comet (528mhz) it is working so... something might be wrong with your phone but I would love to see it in person to see the actual speed differences.

Our thoughts are to keep the light simple and plain (thus lite and free). More of a demo version if you want to think of it that way. We will have the regular version with some user enabled features and pro with our own live tiles and hubs and such (eg, new contacts screens, new music player etc). Nothing is fully set in stone yet. Just wanted to see how people will like the idea. Considering it took 2 people to code this in about 30 hours each, it's not bad. But we do android rapid prototyping and deployment for a living though.
Is there supposed to be a battery indicator in the status bar? I don't have one. And signal doesn't really respond there. Also I have to swipe up or down to see anything other than the time. Which I think is kinda cool actually. Just wondering if that's normal. Thanks, and fantastic work.

Very cool...I like it...! Running it on a HTC HD2 with a Desire ROM and it runs great!

That is normal. Just the way WP7 does that status bar. It is missing battery indicator. We will put it up with the next update. The status bar comes down for 8 sec on real WP7. Ours does the exact same thing (sans animation)
Really good. Works very good on my galaxy s! Waiting for the pro version! I'll offer you more than a coffe!
Pretty slick! Can't wait to see some new features. It'd be nice to use custom icons, say if we use another app for our dialer or messenger, or even for completely different apps! Custom colours would be nice, too.
Found a bug though, if you open the settings and exit it, and go back, there are some weird glitches, you'll see. (this is if you're not using it as a launcher)
EDIT: A page for widgets would be awesome if you could work that out, or at least a way to quickly change settings(wifi, gps, etc)
EDIT2: A way to move tiles around would be good.

[Widget] Moogly to-do widget needs testers

Hi everyone! Im the developer of Moogly, a simple but useful todo list widget that started as a project for Honeycomb. The pr is after the break.
There have been reports that it doesnt work properly on some devices! If someone could be so kind as to try the Lite version and if it doesnt stretch properly, send me some screenshots and log files!
You can also post issues at the main thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202211
Thanks in advance!

Are hidden tasks working ok?
Any issues to report?
Is anyone having issues with the widget showing up in app widget picker after first install?

I however do like the buttons, they go with anything.
Any issues to report?
Hi guys. There will be a nice update for you tomorrow! Color coding and sorting!
Has anyone had a chance to do some testing?
Downloaded and installed Lite version just fine. Created several widgets in the widgets drawer like advertised.
Will work on it some more for you later today.
I can say, offhand, I do not like how it takes you back to the entire menu system when you want to enter a note. Would have been much nicer to just have the note window open.
But, if I have other things, I'll just PM you.

What entire menu system? You must be doing something wrong mate... clicking the plus icon will open the input dialog.
Also, please do not pm me. These threads exist so that others may benefit from my wisdom, it is the essence of the word forum.
Any issues with 0.9.1?
