[Q] Uploading photos to Skydrive, is uncompressed possible? - Focus General

The camera on the Samsung Focus takes great pictures, unfortunately when uploading them to SkyDrive (where you have 25GBs of free space so it's not like you are going to run out quickly) the phone auto-compresses them.
There are no options to turn this off and I can't find any information anywhere on how to accomplish this. Maybe there is a code thru Diagnosis? I'm still searching for the answer but help would be greatly appreciated by me and all Focus owners I'm sure!

I heard from Windows Phone Radio that it is possible to upload high quality photos. There should be a setting somewhere.
The default settings is so that ppl won't burn through their 200MB data plan in one day. Not everyone has unlimited plans.

Where is this option?

Dropbox for Evo - A must have app!

Hey, just wanted to use this as an opportunity to get myself some extra storage space and introduce people this great service to some new users who might not know about it.
Dropbox offers real-time syncing and backup between multiple devices for free. It's one of the few free services that offers version tracking. For example, if you accidentally saved over an important file, you can go on dropbox to restore the older version.
On android, dropbox is especially useful because it allows you to access and edit your most important files in the cloud. While google's cloud takes care of email, calendar, tasks, and pictures, they don't really have a great service for storing other instantaneous syncing of other files... this is where dropbox comes in.
Anyways, here's the self promotion: if you sign up for a new account, please use this following link:
dropbox . com/referrals/NTIyNDAyOQ
I've found dropbox so useful that I'm quickly running out of space and can definitely use some more (you get 250megs for every friend you refer).
Thanks and hope you guys found this useful!.

Homepipe from Homepipe.net is way better...
No storage limit because it just provides a link from your home computer and your phone.

1) You assume people leave their computers on. As a Facilities employee, I would stab you if you tried to do that in my building (Most people don't realize just how much power computers use, even when just idling).
2) You also assume people have fast upload speeds. Believe it or not, most people do not. I for one have about 30kBps upstream bandwidth on my home DSL, which is usually being taken up with torrents and CrashPlan.

Wait a minute. i thought drop-box was a cloud-based storage solution? I.E. you upload TO their servers and pull down FROM their servers to your phone. why would someone need to leave a computer on??

It is, he was responding to my comment about Homepipe.
Dropbox is incredibly helpful. I don't need to mess with cables if I just want to send something to my phone or want easy access to certain things across devices.
If I've ever helped you out or you want to try it out, use my referral to get us both some extra free storage space!

Google Music - Is it Useful?

Saw the announcement today and I got a couple of questions. What's the advantage of having cloud-based music other than being able to listen to music anywhere on any devices? If I were to stream music from the cloud, wouldn't it use up my data bandwidth and consume more battery power on my device? How's the quality of the stream? Is the audio quality going to be as good as the original music file?
As far as battery goes , that would be a yes ....
Yes it will use your data unless you have a constant wifi on the go
All other questions will have to wait and see .. I signed up for Beta .. Hope i get the invite

I'm in Toronto. I signed up for an invite using a US proxy. This is the same way I successfully signed up for Google Voice. Hopefully it works for Google Music.
I also installed the new Google Music app on my N1 (showthread.php?t=1072655), and it's pretty cool. It replaces the stock music player.
As a customer who has 500MB of data a month it's totally useless for me.
Even if I had a 5GB plan, why wouldn't I just throw it on my SD card?

The new Google app looks nicer, but I don't really like it. There's no way to queue multiple albums without creating a named playlist and there is no notification bar in the horizontal layout. I don't want my music app to hide my notifications, I don't see the point of that.
It's much prettier, but they REALLY need to implement lockscreen controls. I find those to be a must-have for use in the car.
Well right now I use the Amazon cloud and it works pretty nicely. And at first I wouldn't think I would use it at all. But I do use it on my work comp and my phone via wifi only. But Amazon does have the option of downloading to your device and they actually recommend it because of the bandwidth issue.
I too asked for the invite. As n1 user that has the wave, voice and gmail, this would be a great addition to my google pack .

+1. Better off just playing directly from my SD card. And FM radio is still useful too

Actually just read the following on the Music Beta website:-
Not online? No problem. The songs you've recently played will automatically be available offline. You can also select the specific albums, artists and playlists you want to have available when you're not connected.
http://music.google.com/about/
I was in the middle of messing around with my updated Music app when my 2.3.4 N1 rebooted...Anyone else?
I have it
I have the service now and checked it on nexus one and my new tablet. I should say the app is nice and the music service work like charm. You can pin music on your device so you dont need to download them again, but on a new device, you will have all musics again. All playlist will be syncs on all of your devices.
The only feature I love to see now is to sync back musics from N1 and tablet. The only way you can upload now is PC, this is my understanding, I need to play with it more.
updated to new version 3.0 and took almost 10MB of my internal memory!! Using titanium backup to integrate the app's update into ROM fails and it gives a force close...
HHmmm...I don't think I will spare those 10MB's for that one...
No

has anyone heard on any limits or anything the cloud based music will be? its a nice feature but putting 90gb of music up on googles servers will takes quite a bit of time for me, along with if there is a cost involved, i think my current set up suits me better than relying on someone elses cloud. granted the [email protected] stuff they were demoing puts a much different spin on things with the tungsten devices
I currently use subsonic which sort of makes my home computer the cloud with my music. I can stream my music collection from any pc mac or linux through the web browser or over my n1 or an iphone if i had one. to answer the op's questions about could streaming yes its gonna use a bit of battery and yeah, data usage will go up.
one of the options in subsonic that is helpful to some with restricted data plans is preloading a set list that can be done on wifi and configuring a max cache size in MB, i dont think ive seen settings like this available in the google music stuff yet
I don't see a big sence in Google Music.
Most people have the few songs they listen to on their computer, why store it in a cloud?
I think one of the nice things is it allows us more space on our sdcards for other things. I am constantly moving tv shows and movies between my desktop and phone, and if I cleared up the 15GB of music I have stored on there, that means less moving around of other files.
But, with that being said, I couldn't use this here (and I am not sure I would use it in the states), as they give me a 1GB cap per month which I always get close to or go over (then they throttle your speeds to roughly dial-up speeds)... plus the drive from work to home goes through two different bermuda triangles as far as reception is concerned (and my village is basically devoid of a T-Mobile signal, although I guess Vodophone or O2 has a signal there...). I don't know how much of your collection it will queue. And I definitely wouldn't do it if the songs can't load fast enough in EDGE (never really tested it) as I almost always have 3G disabled to help with battery life.
Just got my invite yesterday...
There's a number of advantages, like always being able to access all your music (I have 100+ gb, so it would never fit on the phone), secure backup for your music (in case of hard drive failure), etc.
You're not forced into using it, so it's just another option. I've previously been using Audio Galaxy, but that requires my home pc to always be available. This is a bit more flexible...

Still waiting for my invite. I am hoping that I can still use it in Germany (used a proxy for to request the invite... just like Google Voice, which the texting is awesome when overseas), but it may come while I am in the states for a month on leave. Either way, I am always willing to try out new things...
@Rat, how much storage did they give you? I think I remember reading it, but I don't remember... somewhere around 10GB for the free version?
Storage is unlimited and free "while in beta". I've no idea what the final number will be...?

Dropbox Beta. Another Way to Get Free Space!

I found this topic over here at the Atrix forum.
I copied/pasted the below quote from the Dropbox forum here.
Hi everyone!
Even though the holidays have passed, we're really stoked to give you guys one more present -- a new experimental release! Under the wrapping you'll find a bunch of new toys, including a brand new Camera Upload feature. Here are the release notes:
• Automatically uploads photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or data plan
• 500MB of free space on first photo uploaded automatically
• Upload files of any size (no more 180 MB limit!)
• Support for resuming file uploads when there are network issues
• Various performance improvements & bug fixes
During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 5GB total (including the initial 500MB space).
[Update: this space is not separate from 5GB given for uploading on our desktop clients. Uploading from either desktop clients or Android app will count towards the same 5GB free space.]

Since there aren't really any good instructions on how this works I figured it might help to share what I had to do to get the free 500mb
First either download the apk from here. Or get it straight to your phone from this QR code. Both of these links can be found at the Dropbox forum page here (http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=53013).
Once you have the app installed either fresh or over a previous install. Open it. It should take you through the setup as if it was a new install rather than an update. Once the setup was over the app went to a new screen and showed my photos and videos being found and then it began to upload them.
I haven't had a chance to install it on my Iconia yet. But I expect it to work just fine. I'll go ahead and share my Atrix story below. It might or might not happen on the Iconia. If it does just shut down and restart. It should be cool after that.
I did have an issue when running it for the first time on my Motorola Atrix. I went into my settings while it was uploading. When I went back to Dropbox. The app did a funky crash, force close. Then it got interesting. The app opened and wanted to start all over, then closed, then opened and began a loop of that that would not close or allow me to get to settings or anything that would help. I had no issue when pressing the fingerprint button and then choosing to shut down.
After it restarted I went back to Dropbox. I had to log in, but other than that it is running just fine. No more weird loops, fc's or strangeness of any sort so far. And I did get my 500mb right away. I did delete the photos that I tried uploading from my pc earlier and it didn't act like I cheated or anything.
Now hopefully no one minds if I put in a shameless plug.
If you don't already have Dropbox and want to try it please consider using my referral link(http://db.tt/lPgnDhp). Using my referral link gives both you and I an extra 500mb of space when you sign up. It is free!
If you'd rather just go straight to the Dropbox website it is here. http://www.dropbox.com.
Also if anyone else wants to post their referral link below I don't mind at all. We should all go for the max space allowed.
Of course, please support the OP's referral first, but, if he is at the 8GB max, here's my shameless plug/dibs to be next: http://db.tt/lPgnDhp
so sorry guys i would love to help you too.. BUT I have my own web domain . and will stick with my FTP shortcuts ... its fast simple easy and ALL MINE. DID I MENTION UNLIMITED DISK SPACE. And dedicated ip..
Blonde chics have all the Fun Toys..

Filehosting

To begin with, I am not entirely sure that our mods will allow this kind of post....
As the title goes, this thread will be about filehosting(FREE OF COURSE),because I cannot help but notice that many of us will host files/images on a site that have so much of limitation if not paid...
And for those who actually benefit from paid filehosting, it is okay, you can go ahead with your method, but for those who with the intention of purely just want to help others, I think it is best if we share this so that hopefully we will experienced less dissapoinments in the future....
As for myself, I have all images that been displayed here been hosted on skydrive, I set a whole new account only for this purpose. The good thing about this is that all of the pictures I have displayed on this site will stay for as long as I live I guess...if not forever...because I also notice for those who have their images stored in Imageshack for an example, it will get expire after certain amount of time.
Besides, I also share all my mp3 files on this account with those I know and yet still I have a plenty of free space because skydrive is so kind and let me have 25gb of storage for free.....but you will have to set the files/folder for public view of course.
But the thing with skydrive is that there are file size limitations of 50mb per file...but you still can host a a small customization there if you want..
And recently, when google launches google drive, and when I tried to upload a file with size of 700mb, it has been uploaded without a hitch,(take note that I have never finishes uploading this file, but I assume it is okay because google never prompt me with anyhting).... it means if I am right, we could even host a custom cooked rom with google drive for free and without time limitations...and with a god speed download rate....heheh
So, I hope this would help others regarding file/image hosting and really wish that I could ease a burden on those who are trying to help others.
However, being a human we often make mistakes if not always, and please correct me I am somehow wrong about what I said earlier.
Thank you all for your opinion and have a nice day.
Skydrive takes 200MB and 500MB via desktop sync...
I use Minus.com for my images, they offer 11Gb, unlimited bandwith and direct links.
I think the upload speed for Skydrive is very slow, uploading a ROM to Mediafire takes less than half of the time.
I have quite a bunch of accounts made for file hosting servers. A few to be named(I'm not sure how much data can you upload at once though ) :
Google Drive 5GB free(Android app available)
Minus 10GB free(Android app available)
Box 5GB free(I have got 50GB, and didn't pay a cent. Just search Xda forums and you'll find different ways to get 50GB)(Android app available)
Wupload 750GB free! Found this from Xda. Unfortunately you can't share files, it's just for personal use...

Multiple Phones Uploading photos to WiFi Unit?

So this is an idea I have that I'm certain must be popular by now in this day and age:
We're trying to plan out our wedding on the beach. Presumably there'll be no Internet. I want to set up a portable WiFi network for the guests to be able to log on to and upload their cell phone pictures of the wedding throughout the day.
Obviously this has to be super easy for everyone to do, because most of the guests are not very tech savvy. I imagine the device needed would have to be pretty powerful if there could be 2 dozen people uploading at once.
I really don't know where to start on this. It could include everyone needing to download an app (Android and iOS compatible), along with maybe me creating personal folders for each guest to upload to on the storage device, if that's also necessary.
If there's a local WiFi gizmo that's already integrated with a storage unit (128 Gb class 10 SD comes to mind...) with easy to navigate file sharing software built in, please tell me what that thing would be called so I can go search for it.
Thanks lots!
