I just feel rediculous saying "XOOM" in conversation... - Xoom General

Does anyone else feel this way?
With my Droid, I proudly say "My Droid...". Heck, even with my Razr, it didn't seem awkward to occasionally say "My Razr".
But whenever someone asks me about the XOOM (Most of the time they're asking if it's the new iPad...*sigh*), I say "Oh, it's an Android tablet." or if I'm just mentioning it in conversation, I'll say something like "Let me grab my tablet and Google that." or what have you.
It's, obviously, totally different on the internet.
Admit it. XOOM is such an odd name for a device!

I call it my Tablet, or The Pad, or sometimes the Xoom
unfortunately because Android is not a single piece of hardware like the ipad with a HUGE name behind it. Its the fault of spreading your seed to many different manufactures.
and that is a minor issue, .. you can just call it , My Awesome Tablet that is soo much better then the iFail pad!..
lol.
note: I don't want to get any guff from calling it better then the iPad, it was a joke, lets leave it at that, not a debate! kthxbai!

I kind of like the Xoom name. It's conveys speed, and is distinctive. And come on, feel more ridiculous than saying iPad? iPad? Just because they sold 15 million and spent a truck ton advertising, plus the free media Apple advertising, doesn't make it any less a weird name to say out loud.

Yes, exactly. Heck, if you say ANY word enough times in a row it starts to sound ridiculous.

Yup, I hate the name too! Actually, around the house with my wife I typically just call it Tabby or Tabitha - cheesy but better than Xoom!
Funny side note, I was in a hotel bar a few weeks ago doing some browsing when this woman suddenly ran over all excited, "Is that what I think it is?!?!", I paused and was like, "Well, what do you think it is?" (expecting she'd say iPad2) but instead she was like, "The X Oom!"
Part of me was impressed/pleased she knew it wasn't an iPad, the other part of me was embarrassed at her pronunciation of it! haha Even after I corrected her she kept saying it as if it were two words, "X Oom"

Yeah, thats pretty much how it is for me. Once you explain that you don't hold it to your ear and that its a speakerphone (nless you use BT headset or headphones) then it makes more sense to them. And as for what it can do?...
The ipad is very popular and can be seen everywhere but as soon as I whip out my Tab, I always get the "is that the ipad" question. Cracks me up all the time.

"Is that a Kindle?" is the funniest one I've heard...
yep, as above 'until they see how awesome it is'
then they get jealous!
bought my wife a 3g ipad for xmas and she got me the Gtab, or itab as i sometimes call it while mocking her with the awesomeness if it
her ipad lives in a bedroom drawer and never gets used by either of us
and that is the absolute truth
I just tell people it's the ipad2 with more customization features, and less of The Man to get in my way of making it look like I want it to.
Whenever I use someone's ipad I get all annoyed that I have to always have something open, whether it's the app drawer, or an actual application, can't I just get back to my home screen?

Exactly the same with my colleagues... Until we look for something and they try to read their small iPhone screen while everybody comes to check on my Tab because obviously it's more readable. Only objection from the same iPhone colleagues: "Yeah looks much bigger on my iPad". Unfortunately the iPad stays home because it's a pain to carry around ahaha

Do you Feel Awkward?!

pulling your brand spanking new Xoom out in the wild. Such as on the bus or train or in the middle of the street. I dunno i always get that kind of apprehensive feeling using my new toys in public especially when they are brand new to everyone. People look at you like a pretentious pr!ck and engage in commentary amongst themselves. I know i shouldn't even be thinking otherwise. But im tired of feeling like i have to spare other people my toy joy simply because they cant afford some of the things i can. I work damn hard for my money and should be able to enjoy it without hearing curt comments from some jerk who's busy minding my business.
anyone else feel this way?

I'm a college student and I'm pretty sure people would just think I'm trying to flaunt money if I pulled out a brand new Xoom and just started browsing between classes, while the people around me text on their feature phones lol. I'm not worried per se, just kinda been thinking about it.

Lol I'm just glad I'm not the only one. So far I'm running about a 50% douche ratio. Half the times I've had my Xoom with me on the train I chose to pull it out and play with it unabashedly. Don't ask me why but it just bothers me when people assume I'm being a **** and showing off when I'm not. I bought the damn thing specifically for this purpose. Mobile entertainment.
Buts its kinda diff in a NYC subway, kind of polarized. If you're not from or never been. A NYC subway car is a melting pot of technology and status. The poorest homeless man to the Mayor of NY(richest man in NY) take the train.
The only major variable is mobile tech because it sometimes surprising to see who owns what kind of gadget. Such as in my instance I'm self employed(no dress code) so while the business exec on one side of me has his iPhone 4 and the housewife on my other has a flipphone. Here comes little old me looking like some unshaved college student who's mom hasn't gotten around to doing his laundry pulls out the most advanced piece of tech to hit the market(this week lol) its a lot of pressure because its a literal "whose is bigger" contest where the only outcome is scepticism because there's no way this lowly member of the unwashed masses is packing like that. Lol
i feel a little akward. It is 10 inches! Seriously though my town is pretty behind the times so I have yet to see any tablets anywhere public outside of starbucks even ipads! . Getting a case helps makes it feel more like just a little notebook when I am carrying it.
It will pass and someday we will find it hard to imagine everyone didn't have one.
What's weird to me is the assumption that other people can't afford it...lol. However, I do know what you mean about taking out expensive gadgets. I was flying to Vegas the day after the ipad launched and had to answer a million and one questions on the flight there and back. I like to be left alone while I play.

Actually, it says that iphone users are "more likely to say they lead," which I tend to believe. Studies have shown that "popular kids" and those who think they are trend-setters tend to be the biggest followers (copying what they see on TV, movies, ads, etc.). iPhone users believe they are leaders and trend-setters because they're doing what they see other popular people do, but clearly there's a difference between saying you're a leader and actually being one.

Yeah, I was going to come here and say that might also mean android users are just more likely to have multiple email addresses.
Edit: And now that I've continued reading, I see that is not case. I'm skeptical. Though we are more likely to be gmail users, so, maybe we don't need the other crap.
I had to come comment on the "122% more likely to want a pretty looking, but worthless, device" that's the iPhone demo to a T
(not that the iPhone is worthless, but they definitely have that attitude.)
That is the dumbest **** I ever read. Apple propaganda. Sad thing is it will actually work on someone.
I suppose the take home message here is that android has come full circle. We here on XDA aren't your average android user anymore. The average android user is someone that went to best buy and figured "if I'm going to pay ____, I may as well get a smartphone."
In other words, this is really a testament to the extent that android has done away with the concept of "dumbphones," more than it is a statement about user differences.
This may as well be iPhone users vs the public.

Well, I don't think "propaganda" is fair. I don't think anyone is trying to pull one over on anyone, or make a point.
It's just important to keep in mind that this is a self selecting survey, with no verification. Perhaps iPhone users exaggerated, or weren't quite honest with themselves, as someone already hinted at. To me a large number of the answers iPhone look like they're trying too hard to look special/deep. "Look at me! My fav ice cream is salted caramel, my fav food is tapas, my fav fruit is the clementine!"
Edit: not to mention a lot of the points are "iPhone users are more likely to spend money, regardless of the return" Well, no kidding. Maybe way more iPhone users use gogoinflight because android users, correctly, IMO, think paying $13 to have internet access for 3 hours is absurd. So, you can take a lot of these data points either way.
whats the problem with clementines?

People do, however, notice its size if I'm using it for other stuff like messaging or browsing...
OT: I'm really happy Samsung has been pushing this phone into the mainstream so much. It's an awesome device. And it'll be even greater with all the development support that comes from being a mainstream success.

Dont let a Samsung employee hear you calling it a stylus
I hope they do something outrageous about it like it having a dual personality, a phone and a tablet, and it falls in love with an iPhone and follow it across the country. Oh wait, they already did that.
EDIT: ARRGH, my post is too late.
GIANTS won! Yeaaaaaa
Thought it was great! Really makes people think about a bigger better option, the Note. No hard sell just fun and entertainment, better than the half time show. The next three ads will do the rest. Haven't met anyone yet that didn't want my Note.
I won't say the Giants won as much as they just got lucky.
Waste of 9 million bucks. Terrible Imo

^^^ This. If I didn't know what the ad was for (and I hadn't been following the Note for months now) I would think it was just another Android handset with that pointy stylus thing that Steve Jobs said was bad. Not a single thing special about it. Didn't feel like 90 seconds; seemed like it was over and I was still waiting for some tangible "here's why this thing is awesome" moment(s). Oh well. As the Note has done elsewhere in the world, I'm sure it'll sell itself on the merits as people start using them.
The add was lame. I was sold on the specs alone before the thing was ever announced (just rumored) ... Of course we have to remember, most people aren't nerds like us...
The downside to it's success is that, unlike the Dell Streak I'm writing this on, I wont be the only person I know who has one! When I whip out the Streak I always realize that no one has ever seen a phone like this. That is about to end...
The upside is of course that the development from this community, and the updates from Samsung should be great.

Enjoying Note recognition

For some reason, I really enjoy it when someone else asks me if I'm using the Note. I'm not talking about the 'Wow, that's a big phone' type of stuff stuff. Just a curious 'Is that the Note?' and I just go 'yeah!' enthusiastically and flash a big smile back.
Got it from a security guard today - was showing my e-ticket on the phone to the other guard.
It's no joke that I don't attract any attention when talking on the phone in public - I really wish I got more to be honest, so I could tell more people about it.
honestly, I feel really weird why would you feel this kind of pleasure when you receive recognition about you using Galaxy Note?
I love my Note but it's just not more than a tool, it does make my life easier , like what a good tool does.
it's like you feel really honorable when people give you recognition about you using a really good drill when you drilling hole
"hey sir, is your drill Bosch?"
"yes it is!"(oh stop it you :$)

"WHAT IS THAT? Is that a Tablet? WOW"
"Oh is that the new Galaxy(Common Speak )?"
"Oh wow the note? Can I see?"
"How does that fit in your pocket?"
"Woah, that thing is huge"
It goes on and on and I really am starting to get annoyed, just let me use my phone! hah.

Rofl exactly the same stuff here. Sometimes positive resposes and sometimes the crap you mentioned

Same here:
1) 60% of "You could beat someone to death with this brick"
2) 20% "It's too big, I would never use such a big phone"
3) 20% "It can't fit in your pocket" (while I'm slipping it out of my pocket easily)
Everybody who got forced to use it (like some people in my company) do all love it in the end. Even girls like it here in Switzerland: A girl i know and her mother just bought 2 SG-N7000 and both loving the screen size. And girls can fit it in their bags
Size matters, as Hugh Hefner always said
Some of my friends jokingly say, "where's your laptop?". I just laugh. I love this phone. As for the pocket "issue", it's not one for me. I typically put it in my back pocket, but it will fit in side pocket too.
My friends always call it a TV and according to them I look so silly having a phone call with it. But I don't really care because someone who didnt used will never know how cool this phone is.
Besides, they don't know how silly THEY look with their tiny i****.

EVERYONE!
You tell those that ask/make fun about size that it's thin enough to fit in the front pocket.
This is true.
I've had it long enough(months) to be honest and say that truly... it is too big as a phone.
I speak PRACTICALITY for a phone,
it's too big. I've almost dropped it soo many times.
But, I Love It! The screen is in my face! Yeah! If the next iPhone is NOT 4" or more, I may get the 'Note' II.
Also, when ever I text/use a friend's smaller phone I say to myself, "yuke, what is this?!"
Yes, I cannot go back. Who can?!

And especially silly when they are watching videos on it. Then I whip out my Note and watch fantastic HD videos on it and I get dagger eyes staring at me.
And another funny thing is when my colleague keeps saying the Note is too big while he squints at his Iphone screen, reading only 5 lines of huge text.

Being a one handed device, which the note is not good at, is really a different thing than being a phone, which the note is perfectly fine as

I'll admit it was nice and fun at the beginning but now its kind of annoying. It still happens even after over 2 months of having the note.
Just random people will come up and ask is "is that a phone?" Or "is that the note?"
I get tired and a little bit fed up with repeating myself all the time to try and explain to them. I love my note tho. Its my big baby...haha
