I went to download the new syndicate rom last night and the second I click on the rom download I'm forward to site that downloads a virus into my pc wtf is this some sick joke y'all trying to play on people. I tried to contact the developer and of course I get no response. The developers want you to join some bs irc.com site that offers no help what so ever. So because of trying to download this rom I had to completly wipe my pc clean and do a fresh install of my os.

IRC is Internet Relay Channel, and it's a live site where they provide real-time support. I don't know what virus you're talking about, as I downloaded 1.0.2 a few minutes after they put it out and I got no such thing...
I'm thinking you're overreacting just a touch here. Why don't you head over to their own thread and post your issues there. I'm sure theimpaler will repsond within minutes, as they're support (even here) is pretty top notch if you ask me.
I think I know what he is talking about, I mean not the virus part.. But the download site is free, so it has ads, and if you haven't done this before you don't know which one to click on.
You just have to watch when it comes up and read the file name before you click yes to install and you will be golden.
You should always watch and make sure when doing downloads, for this exact reason. Its not their fault, they are providing a free download..
The "virus" could be CWM as when I wen to download it my antivirus flagged it as an exploit, which it is technically, but not something that will harm your computer.

I'm only saying because a lot of people had anti virus flag it as a harmful exploit, which it is not. If it was a true virus... idk. I never download roms on my PC. I just do it straight from my Epic.

But seriously, at first I did hit one of the "wrong" download buttons and it tried to download a download manager to my pc instead of the rom. while that is not a virus, I thought that might have been what he was talking about, because my antivirus didn't flag it.

agreed, there is two main servers for rom hosting, my own and k0nanes. i assure you that NOTHING on either of those servers has any virus/malware related material
if you clicked on the other links those are offered as web based services mediafire does have ads on it..
on a side note congratulations on winning by being the 1000000th vistor....

I've never heard of a virus for android. If you want, lookout mobile is free and has AV, plus backup, plus the ability to locate your phone. I use it, but ONLY for the find my phone feature. I used to have it do AV, but I just didnt see the point. Your call.

Because all you get is "FIRST sms trojan" from just a few months ago... and who clicks links in text messages from people they don't know? Common sense.
AV will contribute to battery drain without any real benefit.
My phone is backed up with
Titanium because I like a one click restore
App Control because I like to keep multiple versions of my stuff and reload on the fly
Nandroid because I flash my phone as often as I flash my wife
All of which have been backed up to my home Network and if I get hit well I'll just reload. To me the price of having my phone scan every file when it loads or when I add something isn't worth the realestate the app takes up in my phones memory.
Honestly people who spread the fear of Viruses are those that create virus's and market their software to rid them. Bad, Bad tactics and honesly they are no worse than a shady Used Care Salesman or a high pressure Time Share Salesman.
I'm not saying the OP is a Salesman, but those that preach it are.
What I can tell you is have fun updating all in market, it will slow your phone down to a crawl.

short answer: no.
What I think is not the virus, but the apps keep sending data to somewhere
I use lookout but often question whether it really does anything besides giving you the ability to locate your phone if it gets stolen. Basically, don't click on messages from people you don't know, stay away from sites that your anti-virus on your home machine warns you about and don't install warez and you should be fine.
No need y'all, waist of space, money and time... If it ever happened hard reset our flash a rom lol...

any OS can be a target for viruses or malware. With Android becoming rather popular it's now becoming a target. People making viruses and malware programs want to hit a larger target not a smaller target.

I read about this on engadget & androidcentral had provided a list on which apps it was. AFAIK, I would've never downloaded those apps but one can never be too careful when it comes to personal information. I just installed Lookout a few mins ago.
I hate bastards that make virus's and stuff just to be funny. I would like to shove their phone up their butt. nah they might like it

android is unix based, but the thing is, the apps can run in the background.
The affected apps use the rageagainstthecage exploit to gain root, then run scripts in the background to get specific information (at least that's what they've identified so far). The thing is, anything (from what i originally heard) below 2.2.1 was able to have an app run the rageagainstthecage exploit or exploid exploit ran without any user interference, but apparently it is not pre-gingerbread.

Besides that, carefully checking permissions, keep an eye out for those apps very easily by not allowing apps to get root. I actually downloaded an app a couple of weeks ago that asked for root.... Don't think so buddy. Uninstalled immediately, went to the market, rated it one star and made a comment about it! Thankfully we have a very well made super user app that asks whether you want to grant root privileges every time.
Quite frankly you have to be asking for it, giving root to any app.

Well how about today I found out why the "movies" section is not showing up in the market in my Xoom... Well come to find out that Google has it where no rooted device can access the movies from the market... I say a crock of ****... I'm sure many of you like me wasnt aware of this when we rooted our device... Wouldn't have mattered if I did... But all the same would have been nice to know.. I don't understand the reasoning behind this.... Anyways those of you that don't know the only way to get it back is to reinstall the stock room then relock your device. Apparently when you unlock it supposedly deletes some file that you have to re flash to get back... I heard this on the latest android central podcast in case you all wanna know. Well maybe some one soon will get us a work around for this.... What y'all think?

This was known when Movie rental via Android was first announced...big headlines all over the tech sites, hardly a secret.
As for why, it was obviously required by the movie studios due to DRM issues. They want to be sure the movies can be stored ina folder that can't be accessed directly by the user. Not surprising considering their previous stance on such matters.

... and just so's we're clear on this, you're saying that simply reflashing the stock boot.img won't fix this, you have to run "oem lock" in fastboot?

UPDATE: You can remove HTCloggers.apk...all you have to do is restart afterwards.

Yes because so many users run Sense.
No because I run AOSP.
Frankly, I wonder how many other serious flaws there are.
I can name several apps that want their hands on permissions they have no business in [Facebook for one]
Its like 1984 for sure. There's an article in the new section here at xda that talks about some of the other vulnerabilities as well.

Many devs remove these programs and such to remove ciq. I can't find the thread right now, but it reads just about everything. It's so deeply imbedded into the framework.
It reads every button you press on your keyboard.
Every text you send and receive.
Every app you use and download.
The pages you browse on using the internet browser.
It even goes as far to read any spot on your screen that you touch.
This is spyware to the extreme. Sprint and HTC will say its not "spyware" and say its used only for marketing to determine how phones are being used to further develop for the current trends in smartphones. It's very possible they could steal personal info with this. Is it currently happening? Uhh...probably not, but there will still be a lot of paranoia about it.

Some of us haven't forgotten the XCP rootkit that was on some Sony BMG titles in 2005... hope HTC doesnt suffer a similar demise like Sony eventually has of late.

it appears to me that this file has already been removed from MikFroyo. At least, I can't find it...
BTW, you can just remove it using TIbackup, but you'll have to restart to get rid of the repeated force closes. Simple fix, and I've done the same for CarrierIQ as well.
It was removed from sprint lovers rom as well... I couldnt find it at least
I removed HtcLoggers.apk from mine and after rebooting (force close loop) it seems to be working fine. However, is there an old log file still on the phone that can be read by some Spyware app that needs to be removed or does all this data need to come from the logger app itself? If there still is a log, I'm sure it has enough info to still steal my ESN and other stuff.

Lookout Security & Antivirus (free)
F-Secure Mobile Security (more for parental control)
not too sure where NQ would fit into the picture since the article came out on april 11th.
anyhow anyone with any idea such programs on the android is worth the draw back on power consumption and security risk please comment!

IMO I don't think there is an antivirus app out there that would serve its purpose... It's more common sense... There's a good reason why when you try to download non market apps that you have to read that little disclaimer and check the box to allow them to install... Know what the apps do, if it doesn't need a permission or if you dont think it needs a permission then don't install it...

Very good advice. Also, keep really sensetive stuff to a minimum. If you can bank on your computer, do it.
I just flash another ROM every couple of days and get my apps from the market. Lol

I am not sure what you mean when you refer to some apps as non-market apps. think all the security apps i mentioned are available through the android market (aka Play Store).

No, they do behind the scene stuff. Lookout scans ALL your apps, just to check for anything malicious. Lookout has some kind of backup, but I never use it. When I bought my myTouch, my T-Mobile rep installed about 5 must have apps on my phone, and Lookout was #1 on his list. I've been using it on every ROM I've had. Hope this helps!

Cool.. so now the questions is which security app is better.. Lookout or this NQ one.. ill go ahead and try lookout and see how much battery drain i get.
i dont download any apks outside of the market. but i hear there were a few places that had pirated apks but i guess i never trusted them (blackmarket). its not like Cydia for the iOS, where the apps are safely cracked.. atleast i think they are. so with a security app i guess it would alert you if the apk is corrupt - nice.

I don't get any battery drain with Lookout. Hope you experience the same thing mate.
I used lookout for a little while, but then I realized that I only need it if I'm careless, which I'm not.

Lookout is very good but since I'm rooted Avast free works wonders beyond basics. van allow which apps have internet access etc. must have for me. very nice on batt.

No, I don't know anyone who ever got malicious SW or any type of virus on Android. For the same reason I never heard of anyone getting a virus on Linux. And for the same reason, I don't have any apps that are made to protect me from things that aren't a threat.

The reason why they don't much is because there not meant for this kind of system... Android unique system is a little well very complex to make a antivirus app or that would find malware... There are so many ways around it...

Those security apps don't really know what there looking for... It's a lot different then windows OS... They don't need much to mess around with your info...

It all boils down to not downloading crappy, unknown apps, and if downloading - checking their permissions. Trojans hit people who don't understand anything and don't have control over their apps (not that there aren't enough of those). Other threats are virtually non-existent.
