Hey everyone,
I was curious to know what filesystem to use when I format an microSD card for my G2. I'm using Windows 7 and can either do NTFS, FAT32 or exFAT (FAT64). I'm curious to use exFAT, but I have no clue if it will work properly.
A friend told me I needed to use EXT3/4 but I'm not using linux so I can't format my card that way.
Thanks!

Use FAT32 and you will be fine.
Kirby
use fat32 for normal sdcard storage.. then if you want to use Apps to sd-ext you need to use Cwm to partition the card for ext2 then upgrade to ext3 or ext4.... also you could make a partition for linux-swap.... but your rom/kernel must support ext4 and/or swap for it to work.... so do some research.... and make a backup of every thing on the card before you format...

Your problem here is you don't understand the difference between FAT32 and EXT2 file systems. Google is your friend...do some reading. Your Windows won't be able to read an EXT2 partition without some specialist software. A Linux PC will be able to read both.
Creating a FAT32 partition and naming EXT2 is not an EXT2 partition. I'd suggest you download a Linux Live CD e.g. Ubuntu and run Gparted to create a EXT2 partition on your SD Card.
The Android runs using a Linux Kernel and natively supports EXT2.
A lot of custom ROMs out there for the Android utilizes Dark Tremor’s A2SD which of course enables you to store your apps and phone’s dalvik cache in the SD card and saves you more free memory for more apps.
This is good especially if you download lots of games to your phone.
Requirements:
SD card reader – since you need to connect your SD card to the PC.
A partitioning tool. – I suggest Partition Wizard by Mini-tool – http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
How to partition the SD Card:
Connect your SD card to your PC and let Partition Wizard detect it.
Delete all your current partition in the SD card. Make sure to back up your files first.
Using the partition wizard, create a Fat32 filesystem. Make sure that it’s set as primary and has a 32kb cluster. Leave space for the ext4 partition. (if your SDcard’s size is 4gb, then just allocate around 3.4gb for the Fat32 parition.)
Using partition wizard, create a ext4 filesystem on the remaining unallocated parition of the SD card. It is advisable that you allocate 512mb for your ext4 partition.
Once done, you can now flash/install your custom Android ROMs that utilizes Darktremor’s Apps2SD.
PS: I wrote this because I always see people asking everywhere on how to partition their SD cards.
And what about this tutorial..?
Just use Search Button...

I admire you for searching that. I found that too. However, I'm getting tired of newbies asking around the threads and just getting that same answer.
That's why I wrote this. The intention of this is good. Don't spoil it.
Yes you are right...
For people is easier just ask a question than try to search answer by yourself...
Thanks this gonna help once i get the card reader xD

hey bro. maybe you could add some reasons why ext4 is better than ext2 or ext3. thanks!
mine says damaged sd card. format? like that.
help!
do i really need a card reader? Is it not okay to just connect phone to PC with SD card in it?

Nope. Most SD cards will have a problem when flashed that way. So better use a card reader.
How do i know if the script is working? I've started A2SDGUI, but in the tab that should show me used and free space SD-EXT entry is the same as /cache, that is 24mb total (I've created 512mb ext4 partition).
Does the DT: Apps2SD work on gingerbread already? it has been the only thing stopping me from upgrading ever since couldn't stand that out of memory notification
Has anybody tried partioning their 2gb default sd card?

It can be partitioned but not advisable if you use stock samsung 2gb class 2 for a2sd, yes a2sd will run but it may give you a poor phone performance. buy a class 4 atleast sd card.

Yes you can partition ext4 on your 8gb sd card, i recommend 1gb for ext4 if you play heavy games. BTW you can adjust the size of partition using minitool partition home, search the forum for link.

I can't get my SD card card to mount.
Do I have to format it coming from stock FW?

It needs to be in FAT32, so copy whatever is on it off it, and use EaseUS Partition Home free version to format it FAT32

I don't have a dedicated SD Card reader in my possession, but an old BlackBerry phone did the trick.
I had to format it FAT32 (Primary), logical didn't work.
Recently I just purchased a 64G card for my S4. I have trouble in mounting the card using CWM - drive cannot be mounted.
Can I format the card in 32 FAT? Must I use the phone to format or can I use the default Win8 format option?

Yes, you can format it to FAT32. That way seems to be supported the best across CWM and whatever ROM you're using.
Make sure it's formatted as the primary partition and you should be fine. I formatted mine externally on my Mac. You should have the same results using Windows.
When dialog fails, it's time for violence.

I use Partition Manager on my Win8 to format the card into a FAT32 media without problem. Now, my CWM can 'see' the new card.
Hi, is it possible for our TN 7 to have exFAT support?
My SD CARD don't work with FAT32, NTFS or EXT4 fs, I tried to fromat it from Linux and Windows as well, always some problems.

You may need to do a full format of the partition table.
Format sdcard in MSDOS then make fat32 partition. For any modern memory or storage, use GPT format and then make partitions to suit. Partitions are best in fat32 or ext4.
GParted is a partition manger GUI for Linux that should do the job.
Any update on this?
Does the TN7 support exFat formatted sd-cards or only Fat32. Would be quite a bummer ... due to the 4gb file-size limitation exFAT or NTFS (not happening for sure) would be highly prefered.
Edit (i think i found the official answer)
w_w_w.evga.com/support/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=59464
Well ... bummer!
Is there a possibility to add exFAT support through other means? A modded ROM maybe? Or a "patch"? (i read that there is something for the Galaxy S3 with CM10.1 and that CM11 supports exFAT from the start.)

I tried for a while with different apps to get another file system to work, but never could get it figured out. No matter what I did, fat32 is the only thing I could get to work.

Use "Bootice" by "www.ipauly.com" to format the sd card to FAT,FAT32,NTFS. Or you can try some another windows utility to format (I think your windows right click format fn is not working properly.) There are various options to choose, choose "partition editor -> your sd card -> create partition table as USB-HDD" option. This will recreate the partition table of the sd card.
I have tested exFAT with TN7, but it doesn't work. FAT,FAT32,NTFS work. I think EXT2/3/4 will not work with sd cards.
If those devices would at least support ext4 on their sd-cards ... just for files >4gb.
Thanks, will try bootice.
TEGRA NOTE 7 compatible micro SD card file system
I bought a 64GB micro SD that the TEGRA NOTE wouldn't read. As it turned out the problem was caused by the exFat file system on the card that the T.N. wouldn't even recognize. NTFS is recognized but it is read only and finally FAT32 is fully recognized, I am now able to read and write on my SD card. I used bootice by Pauly to perform the operations as suggested above, chose "USB-HDD" option and all is OK now.
