I have the latest OTA Legend and reading the root guide told me that currently there is no Backup for the ROM .. now does that mean that all my contacts and messages will be erased?
Is there any way, now, to have my contacts and messages back after rooting and flashing a new ROM ?
does that mean that all my contacts and messages will be erased?

yes
for contacts, you can sync & back them up through your gmail/google account OR export your contacts list (in vcf format) to your sdcard then import them later on when you've flashed to a new rom.
for sms, i think sms backup & restore (& similar in the market) will do even if you're unrooted atm. HTH
Won't temporarily rooting with Visonary+ and backing up with Titanium Backup work?

So I just used geekfor.me prekitchen program for its auto-rooter ability and rooted my phone to recovery img 1.2.3... worked successfully and then did a nandroid backup...
But what now?
1. Should I upgrade to recovery img1.5.2 file? Does it matter and why?
2. Where is the nandroid backup saved? Is it on the phone and where on the phone?
3. Do I lose my contacts if I install a rom such as Fresh 1.1?
TIA
You should not loose your contacts...and I would Update to img1.5.2 ... because is newer?
and the nandroid should be on your SDCARD if I am not mistaken
All of what is said above is true, and updating to fresh1.1 shouldnt erase ANYTHING ON THE PHONE. it will only update the Operating System Files
How do I back up my contacts from now on... I had to completely input them manually which was a pain in the ass.
Also... so since I installed fresh1.1... what cool things can I continue to do to the phone?
As for backing up your contacts, if you synced with a gmail account, and if you saved your contacts type as Google, they automatically get backed up to your gmail account, if I understand the system correctly.

Correct, but it is a hell of a lot easier to enter all the contact info at Gmail page rather than on the phone. At least you have a nice big screen and keyboard then. Then those contacts get pushed to the phone.

Use a free program called PIM backup. It will backup and restore all emails, txt, contacts, etc.
Or use the build in option 'Microsoft My Phone', but you need a live account for this (msn). Works great though!
You can also use apps such as SPB Backup.
SPB Backup will infact backup the entire system for you including everything you may have installed.
thanks !
loads of good suggestions.

Sorry, you cannot use SPB Backup and backup to a different ROM, you will get errors.
I have rooted my Droid X and installed Titanium Backup. I want to do a backup but am concerned with including the contact and calendar data. Since I am on an Exchange account and Gmail, I don't need to back up the actual data files. What are the names of the data files for contacts and calendar? There are several "Contacts...." and "Calendar..." files. One says storage, another data, which one do I exclude?

i have found if i restore ANY data i have the syncing symbol on my notifications bar all the time, i do the batch Restore all missing apps and click app only from now on
If you have them syncd to your Gmail account, they are ALWAYS backed up. Menu, Settings, Accounts & Sync, check the "Contacts" check box and all of your contacts sync to Gmail.
I do understand that the are essentially backed up via sync with Gmail and/or corp exchange. That is why I don't want to backup that data with Titanium Backup. When I open Titanium Backup, I do the following.
Select Backup/Restore tab
Select Menu>Batch
Select Run Backup all system data
When I scroll down, I see the following Contacts files
Contacts 2.2.1
Contacts Storage 2.2.1
Contacts Sync 2.2.1
Contacts Sync Adapter 2.2.1
ContactsData 2.2.1
ContactsUnconnected 2.2.1
Which of those files should I deselect so if I need to do a restore I don't receive duplicate contacts?

This has been fixed in the newer versions. (At least in my experience) the last restore I did with TiB I restored EVERYTHING and do not have the sync symbol stuck there anymore. This used to happen to me also but not as of late with the newer updates of Ti.

I have gotten a replacement DroidX and this has happened to others as well. While other I had did not have this phenomenon. But after I reestablished root and installed Titanium Backup, i notice "ContactsUnconnected 2.2.1" is frozen. I unfreeze it, reboot, and it is frozen again. And I never froze it to begin with. And my previous DroidX did not have it frozen do I have yet another possessed DX? With a mind of it's own? Wanting to be a real Android (boy)?" (bad Pinochio" reference). What exactly DOES "ContactsUnconnected" do? Is it still an unknown variable as it has been since day one?
Many thanks in advance. (Please ignore my phone info on my profile if it still says WinMo. As I have not had a chance to update my info yet)
Hi,
I did a backup from nandroid before to upgrade to a other ROM. Could we just restore contacts from one of nandroid backup?
If so, which part of the backup should i restore? There are boot,system,data,cache,sd-ext.
Thanks
No, i really don't think there's such app. Just no point to creat it. Spend 20mins and you'll get your stuff back. Backup current ROM -> restore old one -> backup contacts -> restore just created ROM back up.

Arf, my backup didn't include contacts. I may have done it after downgrading from 1.72 to 1.34 :S
Anyway, i did your solution I went back to RUU, transfer data from my old phone, export contacts to SD. Back to GV1.5 and import contacts from SD.
Could we save contacts from Titanium backup free, because the contacts/call...cts storage 2.3.2 seems to store only call log...
Your phone should automatically backup and restore contacts from whatever google account you have or setup on your phone. There's no need to have a contact backup utility on this OS. If you don't have a data plan then use wifi to do it.
Not everyone wants to sync with google

Well that's understandable.
There should be an option when you're looking at you contacts to export them to the sdcard. Just pull up the menu and click 'import/export' then export to sdcard. When you restore your phone do the same thing except import from the sdcard. Not sure why 2.3 only exported your call log though, maybe you have to switch the contacts to phone storage o something.
I have synced with google and got many more contacts that are not supposed to be there or the same contact in triple...
How i can delete all contact and try again? Delete one by one is quite annoying
EDIT: I'm on Gingervillain 1.5
I currently use Titatum Backup. What is the best way to get back all of your old software? What is the best way to get back email and txt messages from your phone before the upgrade? Is there away to backup and restore for all data on phone after ROM change. Big headaches seem to be txt messages and email messages and software. Contacts you can just restore via Google.
Thanks for any help you can give.
I use Ti for apps only. I back up my texts and mms with the stock messenger. Contacts and emial are automaticly restored when I sync my gmail profiles. (I only use gmail email addresses and use the gmail app from the market).
I ran into an issue when I went from my previous rom to synergy rc2 and did a full restore of apps and user data using Ti. Long story short, Ti over-wrote some system files and borked my mms.
I have heard some speak of using appbrain, but I have not used it, so I can not comment on it.

Well if you didn't backup with Titanium, or make a Nandroid backup, there is no way to get that data back.

Texts can be backed up with SMS Backup and Restore. Emails should be on the email server to begin with. Apps can be backed up and restored with Titanium
The guys on the Mik forums recommend Titanium Backup (paid version) for apps and data and MyBackup Root (free on the market) for SMS and MMS messages. I also use it for my alarms and dictionary and neither have let me down yet.
I saved a copy of everything that was on my phone before I changed from stock rom to cm7...how would I then get my messages back to my phone?
I use my backup pro
