Gps issues - Xoom General

Anybody else have issues with gps signal? I've been in nyc for a week and haven't picked up signal once. Doesn't matter if I'm in a hotel, on the street or in central park. Then I have my buddy picking up gps perfectly on his ipad and I can do the same on my droid x.
Should gps work regardless on cellular data? I tried with various settings including airport mode with no luck. Very frustrating experience and I'm wondering if I got a defective unit.

Yes and no. If you are just trying to follow yourself then yes. If you are trying to search for stuff or get directions then no.

Sounds like a GPS a-gps thing.

Try downloading GPS Status & Toolbox by ECLIPSIM. You can watch along the bottom as it picks up satellite signals, one by one.
That should help you isolate the problem.
As bwcorvus says, the GPS only spits out your geographic location.
You need Internet access before any program can take those coordinates, place them on a map, and guide you to a new location.

What app are you trying to use the GPS with?
Google Maps and Navigation need internet access.
Apps like CoPilot do not.

Using GPS without CDMA signal

Hello:
I try use the GPS of Sprint Hero in Argentina (there are no operators that use CDMA)
and I can not find the satellite signals, what I can do?
Thanks in advance
Gps will not work without a network location first. You may be able to connect to a wifi and it work, maybe.

Try to use the GPS while connected to wi fi and have not had luck. There fix something?

Are you using a custom ROM, or just stock 2.1?
Probably nothing you can do. The gps hardware is not powerful enough to work without a network location.

Today i'm using CM6 but try with the original sprint rom

my thoughts are...
GPS works.. but without data it has no reference.
Maps must be downloaded via some internet connection. Maybe a wifi can help u.
or
you can download a stand alone GPS map app. CoPilot is a good one, but cost $30.
Yeah, but the gps can't even find a lock without a recent network signal to tell it where to start looking. It's not a full on gps antenna.

I have been traveling around the world recently with my EVO and using the GPS to do so. It's GPS chip is no better than the Hero's I believe.
Things to keep in mind, without aGPS help, it can take these things up to 30 minutes to find your correct location. Usually it takes 4 strong signals to pinpoint it. Download GPS Status from the market and it will show you all of the satellites it is picking up as well as the strengths and you will know when you have a lock. It will also allow you to keep the phone awake and the gps active until it gets a fix. This is probably your main problem. If the phone is not actively using the gps, it turns off the chip and never gets a chance to get a fix.
You need to run GPS status preferably when you are connected to a wifi signal and outside with a clear shot of the sky. It can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 30 minutes depending on if you are on a wifi connection, how far away you are from the last known lock stored in the chip (GPS Status will display this for you) and also how far from the equator you are, etc. If you are very far south in argentina it can be a LOT more difficult GPS to work... I noticed my GPS had waaay more trouble up in sweden than it did down in central europe.
Also, Download mapdroyd and get the maps for the area you are in. It works pretty well for a free locally stored map app. GPS Status also allows you to add pins/labels to gps coordinates and then do a radar type guidance back to them. Between these two tools and now knowing how to connect your phone, you should never get lost again, providing your battery does not die. Luckily I brought 4 extra batteries with me!

[Q] Google maps...... any ideas?

Google maps can't find my location it keeps saying temp. Unavailable therefore my weather app ( beautiful widgets) isn't working correctly either I have the official tmobile update running completely stock, I can't figure it out... my gps works fine but I'm inside a apt building surrounded by allot of trees so leaving the gps on is not a option( besides the fact that it's a battery eater) but I do have full 3G bars... any ideas cause I'm fresh out?
Did you try unchecking "Use GPS Satellites" under "settings"/"location and security"?
Yeah its already unchecked..I tried almost everything before I decided to post

Is "use wireless networks" checked?
Basically, there are only two methods for the phone to know where it is: The "Use wireless networks" method, which enables a coarse tower-based estimate, or the more precise fix by enabling the GPS. If both are disabled, there is no way for Google Maps or any other app to know where you are. Dunno which of these two values Beautiful Widgets is looking for.
Set yr beautiful Widget to a fixed place,
Or use wireless location
Wireless network is checked. This is not a beautiful widget problem but rather a google maps or location problem its showing that I'm at a place I was two days ago and when I try to go into maps and hit the find my location button it says location temporarily unavailable

Yes sometime the Google map remember yr old location, just uncheck both wireless and GPS and go into Google map again can erase that record
For the temp unavailable issue, it is yr GPS problem, did u update to the ji6? It fixed the GPS issue already
And one thing, the wireless location is a estimated location, so if u r using the 3g, it estimated the big area of yr 3g signal ( don't exactly know how to say)
but if u r using Wi-Fi, the estimated is based on yr Mac address so it is more accurate coz it knows where yr router is
Well my gps is fine I don't use it indoors because I live in a apt (no signal outdoors its fine) so its off and I have wireless checked so it uses tmobile 3g network to find my location.... and I have the update I guess I'm a anomaly

GPS not working on my Nexus S

I have bought SNS 9023 but GPS does not work can anybody help me.
take it back and get another one.
Actually the GPS works sometime but when I try this at home it does not lock the settalits
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I've got the same problem.
If you are inside a building the GPS might not work!
Try flashing a custom rom, that did the trick for me. Now it takes a few seconds to lock onto satelites, or flash a new radio.
use wireless networks to help you lock position, settings > location & security
I have the problem too. Indoors it does Jack ****. Outside its fine. My xoom however does both, instantly.

Navigation without data possivle?

If I were to remove my sim and therefore have no data or service with my nexus could I still use Google navigation? Can I basically keep my device as a GPS? And if I can does the navigation suffer (slower, not as accurate, etc)?
Well, you would have to use WiFi to get the directions and load the route. Google Navigation does all the routing and maps online, but caches the directions and appropriate maps for the journey itself. During the trip you wouldn't be able to search or reroute, though.
There are various apps you can purchase that will let you do that, though, such as CoPilot. You can use WiFi to purchase CoPilot and download the maps, then use it connection-free as a GPS.

For now, you can try putting it in airplane mode and trying it.

The maps may be off-line but you'll still have to connect for live traffic. But yeah, it should work without data and just update whenever it has connection such as 3G/4G or Wifi.

Well, I just suggested airplane mode as a "trial" test to see how it would work out. But I assume that the results wouldn't be too good doing this.

Offline navigation using the nexus 10

Suppose I want to use my nexus 10 to navigate a trip from Boston to New York... A clever guy might say 'I can just preload the map'. But that won't work because when I try and load that much map it says to me 'not enough storage, map too big'. The thing is I have nearly 30 gigs free on this thing and it looks like it can't get much beyond a few hundred megs of map storage. Is there some way to kick up the storable size of a map selection? I've not found any setting in maps that'll let me save even the state of tiny Rhode Island! Or will this thing save enough map if I set up navigation before breaking the WiFi connection that it'll just work?

in google maps use the "make available offline" and break the route into separate slightly overlapping squares instead of one large area which will be too big for it. if you just try to save new york to boston in one large square you are getting tons of extra area you dont need and it wont work. if you break it down i think it will let you save 6 or 7 smaller offline maps. ive been able to use it offline between cincinnati and washington dc doing this and it worked fine.
not sure if there is a way to increase the storage limit it sets but it would be nice.
Best suggestion would be Dave's, Google Maps does not allow making big areas available as offline maps.
Btw doesn't the Nexus 10 have a GPS? I thought this GPS would work without the need of a data connection since the Nexus 10 does not support data connection but WiFi only, could someone please confirm or deny this? If you do need a wireless internet connection, then I would say it's stupid to have a GPS built-in if I can just use the network location future for map use when I'm connected to the internet.

First off, thanks to Dave for the suggestion. I wasn't making the connection... Thought I needed one saved map. The Nexus 10 does have GPS... But when using my phone for navigation, doesn't it download the maps as it needs them? If this is so, then once you broke the wireless connection , the Nexus 10 wouldn't be able to load maps as needed. I was under the assumption that I would have to preload the maps somehow which of course, Google Maps can do. If this device is smart enough to load all the bits of map it needs for whatever route it calculates... Then all of this discussion is mood anyway. Of course if you set up your phone for wifi hotspot and you wouldn't need to preload the maps it seems to me... that is of course assuming that you prefer to use the Nexus 10 for navigation rather than your phone.

So you can confirm the GPS feature is pretty much useless? that's pretty much what I would be meaning to use it for, Navigation, but like I said before if it only works with a working internet connection then it truly is pointless, why would I bother tethering my mobile's data connection to enable the Nexus 10 when I can instead just use my mobile for Navigation. Has anybody else tried Navigation via GPS only on Nexus 10?

I simply have not had the opportunity to try using it for navigation yet. I have several apps that do need to have a good position in order for them to function correctly. In particular the the app that needs an accurate as possible location is called sattrack.
I believe if you pre load maps prior to leaving on your trip then the position will be quite accurate as provided by the GPS. I believe the only issue that I'm bringing up is whether or not the maps preload automatically prior to taking the Nexus 10 on the road.
Yes tethering is perhaps somewhat superfluous... However if you want a bigger display it seems like one way to do it.
Copilot Live is cheap, and works very well ...

I dont think it will save the maps along the route if you have a connection initially but it might.
On both my phone and tablet i usually have the area i normally am traveling within always saved offline- it loads faster and if you lose cell service it still works. If i break it into seperate maps i easily can save a 100+ mile radius from home which is probably 99% of my normal travel. If i am headed on a long trip i just delete a few local files and i save along the route and im good to go. If you save the maps offline make sure you are on wifi and not on cell connection or tethering- only takes a few minutes on wifi but files are a little big to do over cell.
to the questions others had about the gps. its very accurate and quick on the nexus 10. in addition to the navigation i have occasionally used some other apps to map some project sites using it and also to view topo and other maps.
Has anybody tested the device with offline programs like iGO or Sygic (with pre-downloaded maps)?
Hmm... I've tried downloading and using offline maps for trips and I found that it wasn't reliable... when I lost connection the GPS couldn't track my location. However, I will mention that I did not make the entire distance from my starting location to destination available offline... I assumed once I was in the area that I downloaded it would automatically pinpoint my location. Maybe I was wrong to think that?
