Can and how can I remove my stock message app - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Title explains it all... I just want to use handcent
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App

on most phones it causes system errors and force closes. i will go out on a limb and assume the same for MT4G. just install handcent and default it for everything!
ps: have you tried go sms? i prefer it.

I like chomp sms as a replacement if I use a replacement. Has the quick compose option that I like.

How to turn off stock SMS after App SMS Install??

Just wanted to know how to turn off the stock SMS feature so I can use the one I downloaded. I have handcent and like it alot better. Usually when I get my first SMS it asks which one I would like to use as default, but it never did. I am getting two notifications and two pop ups at the moment Thanks!
Open the stock app then menu>settings>received notification (uncheck)

Stock sense Mms replaced be AOSP Mms

Is there a simple way to replace the stock Mms.APK with AOSP Mms.APK... Thanks in advance.
You try installing the apk?

I would install handcent which you can make to look like the stock messaging app with the dark theme plus you gain additional alert settings and vcard functionality not available in stock.

Only downside is it doesn't havE full mms support, almost tho. Shortly after it does buh-bye mms apk
Why.....?
Because..... Kaos is better than sense. duh!!!
as an fyi from personal experience, even when you use a different mms app, don't delete the original mms.apk or messaging.apk from your phone, because it won't be able to receive messages anymore. i know cause i tried it!

Not true. I have deleted the stock mms from fr008 and handcent works just fine with the usual bug that it ignores system settings for vibrate on notify.

Are you booted into clockwork recovery? And if so make sure you have /system mounted.

If you delete the stock mms app then you will not be able to send/receive mms with handcent. It doesn't have that capability, it only handles sms on its own at this time. But if you don't user mms then that's no problem.

yeah i did system mount and it said memory full, i then unmounted and adb push worked but didnt show up on the phone.... i did how ever have to pull the battery out to get it to reboot.

Uninstall stock messaging app?

I use Handcent solely for my messaging and I am considering uninstalling the stock app to free up space and remove clutter. Is there anything the stock app is required for that handcent wouldn't cover?

If i remember correctly, handcent is merely a frontend for the stock messaging app, if you were to delete the stock app you probably wont be able to send messages anymore, im not sure though

That's kinda what I thought it may be. I have Handcent set as the default for everything, but the stock messaging still shows up in in things like "share" and such. And that just annoys me.
I deleted the stock messaging, and don't recall any problems using Handcent. The problem was that it still showed up in the Share menu, and it was annoying to select it and have it fail. I reinstalled it to avoid the nuisance, and just shut off notifications in the stock app.

I use Root Explorer (root is required obviously). Simply navigate to /system/app and look for Mms.apk i beleive. I use the stock google mms app, and thats the name of that one. You'll press the button at the top that says "Mount R/W", then long press the app you want gone, press delete, and accept. Make sure you WATCH WHAT YOU DELETE out of this folder.
Haha, thanks. I've been doing allot of playing around the the system folders; deleting, modifying, etc. Thus I always keep backups and such, and I the SBF files ready to go on my comp just incase of bricking. So how was never an issue, more looking at the impact of doing so. But thanks, irregardless.
I deleted the stock txt app once and I wasn't able to receive or send media txts such as video or pics, same goes for the stock web browser.

You delete the stock messaging app and you loose MMS. You can send and receive regular text but no send/receive MMS.

Messaging annoyance

Ok, I tried looking online and even deleting the stock messaging app.
My problem is that everytime I receive a text message I receive the little envelope notification in the task bar. Even when I check my texts through this notification, it stays there until I actually press clear on all the notifications. This might be stupid to some, but it absolutely annoys me.
Someone please help.

What msg service r u using. If its 3rd party then u have to ho into stock app and tell iT in settings not to get notifications
I was just using stock and yes I unchecked everything in those settings, and unfortunately I kept receiving them.
Now I've deleted the stock messaging app, and now using the handcent third party app, but I'm still receiving the stock notification and a handcent one.... Is this a bug?
I'm rooted on stock rom.

You problem is deleting the stock messaging app. It still delivers the text through OS, even though the actual app is no longer present. You should have kept it and told it to ignore.
You have to go into your stock messaging app, tap menu, then go to settings. Once in there you need to find "auto-retrieve" and unchecked the box. Then find "notifications" and unchecked that box as well

Okay....so I wiped everything and reflashed cm7 and still its messed up
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Sounds silly, but have you looked throug hal lthe Handcent settings?
Becasue all yea raeally need to do with stock is clear the show notifications box.
I finally gave up on third party mms apps and just run stock now. It's fine. I don't need balloons.

SMS APP

Anybody know of a texting app that you can quick compose from the lock screen? I had one on my iPhone and by pressing the volume key it brought up the quick compose box.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
handcent has this feature. And also the same layout as the iphone!
chomp, handcent, and go i believe all have the ablity
Handcent does this for sure.
I use GoSMS, but Handcent and Chomp achieve this too. I tried Handcent and it had some really nice features, I just didn't like the appearance of the app...just personal preference. I haven't tried Chomp, however it looks nice...Just too lazy lol.
I have handcent but how do you set it so the quick reply is used from the lock screen?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
I use GoSMS. Im not aware of any feature like this. Handecent or Chomp might have it.

GOSMS does have this option. its in the notifications settings, enable popup windows. then go into default notifications, and check 'unlock screen' and 'screen on'
it doesnt leave the lockscreen locked afterward, but quick reply is cool
an alternative if you prefer to use the stock sms app, you can use an add-on called SMS popup and it has this feature too. i prefer sms pop up myself
