Is there no other way to get the phone out of idle then pressing the button on the top of the phone?
it is a pain in the ass.
I agree, its not the most convenient.
Pressing the tracker ball does it for me.
lilHermit
You'll get used to it in no time!
Trackball method does not work for me.
doesnt work for me either, the tracker ball would be nice...
did you change an option for that?
The track ball doest do it for me either. I don't mind using the button on top of the phone. I've always used HTC phones and a lot of them use the button on top to wake it up. You should get used to it pretty quick.
Damn, I was hoping the trackball would work... I disliked this about the Droid as well. It takes two hands to unlock the phone, doesn't it? The G1 and MT3G methods were better.
shouldn't we be able to remap the button pressed to work with the trackball? (with root access that is)
i agree...im not liking the top button to wake up the phone...trackball does not wake it for me either...
CLOCK APP
I just realized if you open the clock application, and let the phone go to sleep, then you can "Turn it on" with the trackball or volume rocker.
Now if there was a way to have the phone set to "Sleep = Clock" we'd be golden; the clock screen doen't look that bad, either.
I will say, the button placement on the top is much better than the Motorola droid. I was worried myself, but I got used to it super fast, and it isn't an issue at all.
(Former G1 owner, used to just pressing menu twice)
Just download "Keyguard Disabler" from the Android Market. It will allow you to use the trackball to turn the screen back on.
The screen is capacitive touch, and so is the "hardware" buttons.
If you want to be able to power up the phone from sleep with these buttons, that would require the capacitive touchscreen to be active while the phone is sleeping.
Wouldn't that affect the battery life?

Agreed. look here too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613864&page=2
David1171 has a partial solution. Problem is I'm guessing, that there is no way to setup a double tap. Maybe someone knows.
I'm hoping that a future release of spare parts will have a setting for both a double or triple tap of the track bar to wake up, with or without the slide lock. ( I think that the slide lock would be less annoying if the track ball woke it up first instead of the poorly located power button) Also I am hoping that it will have settings to adjust the trackball notification flash speed and color for different google apps.
Just to let you know:
There is a thread about the trackball for wakeup thing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5337345
I got used to it pretty fast, its funny my other phone is a G1 and i find myself trying to unlock it by pushing up top all the time now haha, just become instinct.
I've heard a lot of people say they have trouble unlocking the Nexus One with one hand, but personally I have no trouble unlocking the device with one hand... with either hand.

This person does not own a Nexus One.
Lockbot from market. Don't need pro, the free version will do.
Dunno why they copied the iPhone with the slide to unlock, with the magic its so easy you press the power button which is near the trackball then press menu.
It would be great if you could just press trackball then menu button to unlock.
is there any way to just press on the screen to wake it up other then pressing the power button or trackball? if anyone has used an iphone i am looking for simply touch the screen to wake it up and sliding to unlock skipping trackball or power button presses. thanks.
It's possible to wake up the iPhone by touching the screen? Only for jailbroken phones? That's something I've never heard of before.
I don't think that is possible right now, Android would power down the touch sensor to save battery. Just like a stock iPhone does too.
I am interested to know how to do that on the iPhone though, I'd love to do that with my iPod Touch.
ohh thats right i forgot the iphone has to press the home button to wake it up after a long sleep. my iphone is setup to wait the longest time before going into a sleep so if i am waiting for something the backlight turns off and locks the phone but a press on the screen turns on the backlight waits to be unlocked. oh well would be cool to have on n1 though. thanks for the reply.
The program "nolock" in the market makes it so you can use either the trackball or volume buttons to wake the phone. Other than that, I think screen wake would kill your battery. Can't say for sure though.
worth trying this app thanks
Yeah, being an OLED screen, you can't just turn off the backlight. Each pixel is a light all by itself. Otherwise you could probably do the same trick.
No lock or keyguard disabler bypass or disable the lock screen. Root and running a custom rom like CM will let you double click the trackball to unlock the and wake the phone. There is also a menu unlock too.
I have no lock and I like it because its one touch and you're rolling. On the other hand the wake up on trackball also enables the volume key to wake up and I was often unintentionally waking the phone so I disabled it. Going to try the menu wake up next. No hardkey to wear out, and combined with one touch I think it might be a winner for quickly lighting up the unit without the unintended wakes.

Menu wake doesn't do what I believe you may think it does, you still have to press the power button to turn the phone on. Then you press menu to skip the lockscreen.. which in my opinion is not needed. I only said this because you said no hard key will be worn out.. but they still will.

what are you using for that?
Funny that because I just went to go hunt that one down and found that you are indeed correct, it only acts as an alternative to slide to unlock, it does not wake up the phone. Sigh.

Ya ninja'ed me. I use a free market program called No Lock. Pretty much as its name implies it removes the requirement to slide to unlock, can be toggled. One touch of whatever you are using to wake it up and you are off to the races. A must have for types like me that dont use a lock and would prefer to wake and go. The app does have one niggle. It remembers my setting but at every restart and have to toggle it to get it to work.
sounds like i must dl it and worth pressing 1 button to wake up without sliding to unlock.

yes i must say it works well. i didnt even try the no luck. it also has more reviews fyi. im keeping it. it also has an addon for something idle. im guessing that idle addon disabled the mylock to enter your security after an x amount of sleep time has passed. sounds ok if u want security enabled i guess but most pay a few cents for it. not for me at this point.
Hello all,
I have not rooted my phone as of yet but plan on doing it. I used to have a G1 and moved to the slide. The biggest problem I have is I like to keep my phone in my pocket at work, but have to have the phone off. If I barely tap the phone's power button it turns on and I end up either pulling the battery or putting my phone in my lunch bag (praying no one takes it).
Anyone know if it is possible to change the power button to need a long press to turn on instead of a short press? Alternatively moving the power button to the genius button would work too.
Any ideas?
Can't you just put your phone into silent mode? Airplane mode? Or turn off the mobile network.
Unfortunatly for me to be able to have my phone on me it has to be off. It is a government facility and its their rules. I may be outta luck but figured I'd ask the fine people here.
Thanks!
It can be done

I looked and in my keylayout directory, I have 3 *keypad.kl files, a Verion 0, 1, and 2... whats the deal on those?
Edit: Eh, doesn't really matter. None of them clearly had a "GENIUS" label. On was called SOFT RIGHT, which may or may not be it...
i was mainly looking into them last night, made bachups of course, tonight i will be playing with changing things and seeing if it works, i figure i will start be changing the A key in each version to something different(comma in one, period in another and something else in another) then we can see which version the phone is reading(i would think it would be v2 but idk) and then we can start remapping those buttons.
not sure how we would change power to require a long press though
May I advise a hard-case?
The idea is that it adds a layer around the phone, and this makes the power button indented. Protecting it from accidental hits.
1/8 of an inch makes all the diff.

So in the creation of this abnormal problem, do you do anything abnormal? For instance, are you poking around in your pockets? Does your Government job require any running and jumping where as to cause crushing of objects into your pocket? Can you carry the phone in an exclusive pocket? (i.e. just the phone, no keys, loose change, peanuts, hard candy, etc.) food for thought...

Nope, just an average guy sitting at a desk working with computers. I have nothing in the front left pocket of my pants other than lint and my phone normally. Thing is...the slide likes to slide around and all it takes is a tap of that power button. I wouldn't never know it was turning on if it wasn't for that annoying T-mobile sound (which I'll get rid of eventually if this problem is resolved).
I've also had the phone slide out of my pocket before and keeping it still in the car while listening to pandora can be interesting. I'll have to look for a good all-purpose case that could fix all these small annoyances I guess lol.
Didn't see it posted in here, but if you can boot into Clockwork Recovery using the update.zip in the root thread, under the Advanced menu, you can do a Key Test, and every key you press, it's key # is displayed. None shows up for the Genius button. This is probably because of what was mentioned before, being mapped by software, or something...

i know it isnt a solution to your problem, but if you power off the phone while in silent mode, it wont play the tmo sound when powering on the next time.
Not a solution, but it may keep you from being discovered if it does accidentally happen.

Not to sound like a smart ass but if you cant have it on when working then why keep it in your pocket? leave it in your car.
You maybe better off getting a case to keep the phone on your hip and out of your pocket. I personally don't like putting my phone in my pocket unless its a flip phone. I bought a case for cheap off of Ebay.

Side note, as there seem to be possible issues with dust collecting under the bottom of the screen glass, may not be the best idea to keep it in your pocket unprotected anyway.
Do what I did, buy a holster from T-mobile. I basically have to do the same thing as you but only in my budiling! (Government facility also) reason I don't leave it in the car is that I like to have my phone with me in case I need to make a phone call outside of the office.
The holster keeps you from acidentally pressing the power button and its comfortable on your hip and its convient.
I just keep mine in the cloth case that came with my G1...if you still have it its worth a shot...it keeps the button from being pressed...

Hi guys,
Got my Desire HD last Friday and I'm really pleased with it, stunning device. The problem is, I'm using a case which protects the phone nicely and looks decent too but the power button is very tough to press in (let alone without a case TBH). I have Cyangens "Menu Unlock" enabled but I'm wondering if there is a tweak or APK to enable the capacitive buttons when the screen is off so I can turn it on easily (using Button Remapper). Maybe even a shake to enable app to wake the phone. Oh, cover below:
When I had the Galaxy S, I could just wake the screen with the main physical Home button.
When I had the Milestone, there was an APK to allow me to wake the screen with the buttons.
Any help or direction would really be appreciated. Would love to be able to unlock it that easily.
Cheers #auggie2k

Buttons will be disabled when phone is asleep. The closest is to try "Tap Tap App" from the Market. Its free. Try and see how it could give you possibilities. Basically, it will allow you to set lock/wake permissions using the proximity sensor.
I use it as an alternative to pressing the power button all the time during shorter phone sleep/wake intervals

You're welcome mate! Test the proximity settings, I used to use "Easy Detection" but found it too sensitive, it unlocks with short finger waves which was cool but also gets screwed up with strong winds when outdoors... lol
Since, I've changed the setting to "safe mode (default)" and it responds well to 2 mild taps. Hope it works for you too!

I cannot stand the fingerprint sensor/power/lock button. Just because, it's ridiculously placed. If it were on either side - fine, that's good, I don't have to hold my phone like a tennis ball.
The placement isn't the main reason I hate the thing, though.. I have two more reasons - reasons which may be resolvable (input appreciated in that department )
1. When you try to unlock the phone, the backlight comes on, but no display.. Have to lock and unlock again. Also happens when ending calls sometimes. - multiple ROMs.
2. ABSOLUTE WORST THING IN THE WORLD - makes me want to inject battery acid in to my eyeballs - fingerprint sensor navigation (as seen in cm7/cm9) - WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY DOES THIS EXIST? Not only will it be randomly navigating the screen whenever a finger goes near it, but every time you want to lock the screen - you first have to see an ugly yellow selection indicator fly across the screen.
The good thing about fingerprint sensor navigation is that you can disable it. The bad thing about fingerprint sensor navigation is that its settings in jokersax11's CM9 are seemingly unavailable.
"com.authentec.Truesuitemobile has stopped working."
I guess this is just me ranting. It is rather annoying, because the CM9 mod in question is rather cool, and I'd love to use it, but I can't ignore that annoying fingerprint sensor navigation.

I think there are mods around that can make you use the volume button as unlock button, also you can try other lockscreen app that can simulate this also.
1. I have no issue with this. Have tried many ROMs.
2. I think disabling the navigation should not make any problem, somethings must be wrong with your setup. But I have only used CM7, haven't try CM9 yet so not sure if CM9 behave differently with this disabling fingerprint navigation.

The problem with using the volume keys to unlock is that I use my phone as an mp3 player, and actually use the volume controls while the phone is locked in my pocket - though I have tried it, and I don't have the issue with the screen not waking properly when I do. ;x
Here's a thought
If u don't like it that much get an Atrix 2. Not trying to be a **** but it's a thought.
The rest of the phone is great, though.
& the Atrix 4G seems to outperform the Atrix 2, so I don't think that'd be the phone I'd consider, if I were to make a change. ;o
I have no problem with the placement of the fingerprintreader/unlockbutton and i have absolutly normal hands.
But the problem with the fingerprintnavigation can be solved easily.
Just go to setting-device settings- fingerprint sensor navigation and change "NAV Enable" to disable.
And after a restart your problem is solved.
But in the moment this is only possible with CM 7 , in CM 9 you can't disable it in the moment.
I'm pretty sure you can set the volume buttons to adjust the volume and have it as the "wake" key. What would happen is you would have to press the volume button once and then you can adjust the volume while it's still on the "lockscreen". Then after you get to the volume you want the lockscreen will shut off after about 3 seconds. You would still have to "slide to unlock" to completely "wake" the phone up.

CM9 is looking fantastic, had a play around with it last night, but that fingerprint sensor nav is an absolute deal breaker.
Have you never attempted to look at your phone whilst laying down, gone to unlock it, and have it drop on your face? I really find the button placement awkward. Maybe that's just me. Haha.

Ah, I also forgot to mention that I use the volume keys for track skipping (hold) - I thought I read somewhere that enabling volume key unlock would disable the track skipping function.
I just noticed you mention using CM9 so my experience is off of CM7 but I think the "volume unlock" and "track skipping" can be enabled at the same time, which is why it requires a "hold". But, again, it could be a different story on CM9 (as of now anyways, while it's in alpha).

Just want to clarify - I'm not talking about the fingerprint unlock function - that's pretty cool.
Regardless, the sensor nav. should definitely be an optional extra (flashable .zip).
Whoever decided it needed to be included in every single CM release needs to go back in time and decide differently, lol.
