[Q] Ringtones and such since HRI66 update - Xoom General

I was able to use my own ringtones and such before the update now even after converting to ogg and placing in all /system/media/audio/ folders i can not get any of them to appear in my choices for settings on alarm clock, calendar, gv, or google talk.
Can someone please help me with this problem?

I usually go into the music player, long press a track, and "set as ringtone" to do what you're trying to accomplish. Have you tried that?

No I have not but i will.

I'm having this same problem as well. Were you able to resolve it? I don't seem to be able to long press tracks in the music app and when I hit the little menu button it doesn't give an option to set as ringtone. I'm trying this on a wav and mp3 file though.

ringtone always goes to windows default, does not change wm5

I select a ringtone I used to have for my i-mate and now i loaded it for the jasjar, I select 'Set as Ringtone' it gives me the message that it has been copied and set....BUT if i go into the phone or if I call the ringtone selected is the Windows Default.....
any ideas?
Is it a MP3 ringtone? If so, if MP3s are associated with a program other than Window Media Player than this will happen.
I have Pocket Music on mine and I had to unassociated .mp3 with this program and now the ringtone stays set all the time.
I had the same problem on my pda2k wm5, finally to solve it i changed manually the registry where ringtone are written.
If you want to try, you need a registry editor, then go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\
Under RingTone0 you have the key "Sound" that is your actual ringtone and the key "SavedSound" that is still your ringtone (it's needed when you go to radio off to remember your ringtone).
Check this 2 keys and if are not your ringtone, write it manually: \windows\rings\xxx.wav

thanks for the solution
I had this trouble sooo often, and i didn't even realise it starts after installing Pocket music player. In the control panel setting where you choose your ringtone,i couldn't even set another ringtone,no audio preview no nothing,if i choose any and click okay,it goes back to default. i did what you said and file association for mp3 went back to wmp and eeeeveerything working fine as it should be thanks

How to use MP3 ringtones?

I am having trouble using MP3 Ringtones. The MP3 is fine when played with TCPMP.
I didn't install extended rom after hardreset.
I moved the MP3 file to Windows/Rings folder.
I could select it from list where I select ringtone, but it doesn't play back.
One more thing: on the manual, it said if you select and hold a music file it will have a "set as ringtone" function. I have it for MIDI but not MP3.
thanks
when you say it doesn't ring, do you mean it doesn't ring when you press play, or it doesn't ring when a call comes in?
Device volume has to be on if you want it to play when you press on the "play" button in the ringtone selection screen.
It doesn't ring when I pressed the PLAY button. Even after I select the MP3 ringtone, it will just go back to WINDOWS DEFAULT after I press OK.
Are you using PPCProfilesPro? I know it was causing problems on my device
Same Problem, do you solf it?
How?
Just tested and solved..
It seems as there is a problem when another player than WMP is set as default player for mp3..
How to solve:
Use an registry editor to set WMP as default player for mp3..
Change HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp3\(Default) back to "MP3File"..
Restart (soft-reset) the device..
Disvantage: If you click on a mp3 in the File Explorer it will no longer be opened with your prefered media player..
Update
Update:
After reassigning mp3s with my prefered mediaplayer it still worked and I can set mp3s as ringtone even if WMP is not the default player for MP3..

I've been trying on using my MP3 as a ringtone to no success

Have you read the two posts above?
Assigne mp3 with the Windows Media Player as described in my first post.
Reboot..
Afterwards choose your mp3 ring tone..
Reboot..
At the end reassign mp3 with your prefered Media Player and then all should work..
Reboot again..
If its still not clear, specify your question..
Oops, I've been skipping the posts.
I didn't quite understand what you mean by reassigning the registry with a prefered MP3 player. But your post clears it up.
Sorry for the mistake

If you're using another mediaplayer then WMP, you have to reassign the player again with mp3 files (cause you removed that assignment in the step before..)
If you don't have a prefered music player, just forget this step..
I had the same issue after installing iMusic to my Wizard. Hopefully I did uninstall the application. Now I can select again the MP3 and WMA files as ringtone.
Thanks a lot!!!
Easy thing:
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mp3file, copy shellcontexthandle which has string "set as ring tone" and paste to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\imusic or other if other player than imusic is installed. It will work again.

Sorry for my bad English.

Ringtone problem... please help

I have been looking all over the place and so far I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere. I want to use a music file (in .wav format) as a ringtone. I am able to select it from the drop down list, but when I press the test button, it doesn't play. I have read somewhere that in needs to be within a certain length. is this true? if so, it is a bit disappointing as I like to listen to my ringtone for a bit before answering my phone. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried converting it to an MP3?
Now it works. I changed it into an mp3 file and put it into my documents. for some reason it wouldn't play it from my ringtones folder as an mp3 or a .wav and I couldn't figure out what the problem was.I put it into my documents and now it works. thanks for the reminder though. I kind of gave up on trying to use mp3's.

How do I set an MP3 as a ringtone??

I tried putting an MP3 file in the Windows\Rings folder so it does show up as one of my ringtones in the phone options. But it doesn't play and my Windows default ringtone plays instead. There isn't a native capability for MP3 playing as a ringtone. So is there any way around this?? I know I can convert it to WAV, but the WAV file turns out to be 4MB compared to 300K as MP3!! Big difference especially if I want to assign dozens of ringtones for different contacts. Any suggestions?
The only thing i can think of is that maybe in your contact list you have the default ringtone set for individual callers. If not then i guess try to clear your data, maybe something you installed is making it go screwy.
Very easy .. Tap on the mp3 file and hold ... there is an option 'set as ringtone' All I use is MP3's as ringtones.
If what they said doesn't work then it might just be a problem with the mp3 itself. I think I had a problem like that with an mp3 once but I've had a whole lot of wav files not work even when they played fine on my computer. Unfortunately I don't know how to fix them so they will work other than to try downloading it again or downloading it from another source.

What are you running WM5 or WM6? I have found with WM6 that in the phone settings when you select a ring tone and exit out it automatically changes back to the default ring tone. If that is what's happening then there is a workaround. Just something to look for.
dont put the mp3 in any folder, that worked for me. i even tryed putting it in the ringtones folder but it wont find it when i select a ring tone.
Actually, I think what the o.p. is talking about is this;
Say you have a default ringer for all people. Default, or whatever. Go into your contacts, and edit one, placing a MP3 file as a ringtone (I guess you'll have to move it to windows/ringtones?). Now, if you highlight the file on the person's contact page, it should 'play' for a preview. Mine does not play. The ringtone I've set happens to be >5Megs. not sure if that matters.
So, setting individual ringtones for people doesn't seem to work. However, I have previously been able to assign a MP3 as a default ringtone for 'all' people.

I can't get this option if the MP3 is in MBs. The thing to do is copy the MP3 to My Documents and paste it under UA Contents. Go to phone settings where it says ring tone, scroll down the box, find your song, tap on it. It will pop up in the ring tone box. Be sure that the MP3 is associated with windows media player and no other you may have, otherwise it cannot be used as a ringtone. That's why I didn't get the option to set as the ring tone. The MP3 I tapped and held was associated with GS player, but that was easily solved.

Simply tap/hold/cut or copy the MP3 you're transferring from, go to windows/rings , and paste. The MP3 has been moved to the Rings folder.

Question: Why would you want to set a MP3 as a ring tone regardless of who's calling you? Are there any 30sec. MP3s out there because the longest you can listen is 30 seconds. MP3s eat up your memory in MBs that you might need to have at a later date. Why not download effects or tv theme ringtones as a suggestion only. You can download thousands, maybe more at www.polytones.net.....www.freemobilefun.net, or funformobile.com. You can download videos, music videos, other types of videos at www.mymobileclips.com. Free registration, and after registered no need to log in future visits. Check the box remember me each visit. On this website you can browse or search Metacafe, Dailymotion, Google, You Tube, etc. Select where you want to search from, type in the search box, ex: elvis presley, and videos about him will come up for downloading.
Google for Audacity. It's a ringtone creator that will cut an MP3 down to a usable size by allowing you to select just the part of the MP3 you want to use as the ringtone. It's also free.

Ah...turns out the contact has to be stored on phone for it to be able to use a custom contact by default.
That goes against the Google philosophy...strange idea.
I'll take a look at tone picker. Thanks!
Ah....tone picker is just to choose a ringtone, not to add it to contacts. My misunderstanding.
U dun actually need to use an app to choose mp3 ringtones. Just place the mp3 files in sdcard/media/audio/*

ah...can't be helped then.
if you know how to exclude directories that would be good.. when i had nexus one it didnt pick up extraneous directories with cyanogen.. unfort. i have 2 audiobooks in audiobooks on sd card and apparently the music player pics up everything on the card.. over 500 .mp3 .. pain in the ass to manually make a playlist..
here is something i found where you create your own /txt/m3u playlist files manually seems to work.

I´ve a question: Where is the "lock button"? Is it the "power button" on the right side of the phone or are you talking of a "virtual button" on the homescreen or something else?
lock button is supposed 2 be power button ...but as i said was not working 4 me till i reset
Thanks. I´m excited to see whether this will work on my Galaxy when I get it.
