Tmobile 3g+voice.. - Galaxy Tab General

People are trying to flash modems of Tmobile tab to enable 3g+voice.. There are so many assumptions.. MAYBE information are programed WITHIN the SIMS card... that so you can't make it work via flashing modems.
Just wondering....

i noticed that after flashing roto's 2g modem (only way to have voice calling as of now) i still could not make a call, a man would come on immediately saying "this phone cannot place outgoing calls"...something like that.
so i tried my g2 simcard and it worked perfectly. (t-mobile tab btw) so, even with slow speeds, it seems t-mo has it locked down by disabling the sim they give you.
comparing my g2's sim to the GT sim, seems that there are more contact points on the phones sim than there are on the tabs

First of all - "Not another TMo US 3G+Voice thread!". Please, no more!!!
I'm guessing here, but you're using a SIM you got with the Tab which has a webconnect plan? As far as I'm aware, these plans have no voice - so it's not the SIM, it's the plan it is linked to!

[Q] tmobile and unlocked Samsung Tablet

I apologize because I think I may have posted my questionin the wrong place two days ago. I'll see if I can delete it. I hope a few people here can answer me.
My question is that I already have a voice data account with tmobile and SIM card for that account in my Galaxy S Vibrant. Can I remove the SIM from the vibrant and place it in this particular International unlocked P1000 Galaxy TAB to use this P1000 as phone and data just by moving the SIM card? Or do I have to still notify tmobile that I am moving the SIM to this unlocked P10000 device? And will all features of this international version then work....the phone and 3G data with my SIM from the working Vibrant? If I can just move the SIM card is there anything else that I have to know or have to do?
All US carriers consider Samsung Galaxy Tab as a mobile broadband data device and make difficult to walk around this decision.
Since you are going to get a Tab not from T-mobile, it will not have your IMEI number recorded and might treat your Tab as a phone allowing for both voice and data. The issue might be only that you will not get 3G for data because software and hardware do not support unique 1700/2100 AWS frequency bands utilized by T-mobile in the US.
Do you have the phone dialer icon? If not you will need to flash a rom so you have a dial pad.
Thank you both for some answers.
The reason I was looking at this imported version was because I read that this Samsung tab already allowed telephone and since I already had a working 3G and telephone SIM from tmobile I thought this was the way to go. I really wanted this Samsung Tab to do telephone so that was the real reason even looking at this particular item.
No I have not ordered this yet. I wanted to ask the questions BEFORE I paid the money to find out that it will not work in my situation?
So what I am reading from both of you is
1. I probably will not get 3G, and
2. I would need a dialer Icon from somewhere.
Not getting 3G is a "do not purchase this" issue then for me.
Any ideas on the Samsung Tab then? I do NOT mind signing it up with tmobile, I just also wanted it to do bluetooth phone, 3G and then only need to carry this one device.
You guys are great
Thank You
The T-mobile tab can be unlocked. After it is unlocked you can flash it with a European rom and Roto's modem swithcher. You can then run 3G on any carriers sim card and switch to 2g (edge) and phone with T-Mobile using Roto's modem switcher.

WoW. Thanks for that info.
Wonder if you do all this and will hear incoming calls if you are in 3G mode. (i guess this is what the Roto's switcher does, it places it in 2G or 3G). Then if you could/would hear it ring while in 3G, for an incoming call you would then have to switch to the 3G mode with this Roto switcher? Trying to get the call before voice mail kicks in? (what is it, an icon for an on-off type thing of its installed software).
Has anyone actually done any of this?
Yes its been done by many Tab owners. Search the galaxy tab developers section for how to flash roms, modems and kernals. You'll find a treasure trove of information on how to improve the Galaxy tab. The Developers here at XDA are an incredible group of people and most are willing to share their development findings with other Tab owners.
Good Luck.

Do I understand you correctly saying that T-mobile Tab after flashing can get 3G and voice phone on any carrier Sim?
This would be my "dream". So far I can only get either voice with phone Sim or 3G data without phone capability. BTW, the latter requires Sim with paid data service separate from smartphone. Roto's swither is just a utility flashing either phone modem or 3G data modem.
Would you mind to give more details supporting your post.
P.S. European Tabs have phone voice capability and a dialer out of box. Not extra flashing is needed.

Voice + EDGE data OR OR OR 3g data/ no voice NOT NOT NOT both!!
You cannot get 3G data and voice at the same time on the Galaxy Tab. With the modem switcher you can switch between 3G data only and 2G (edge) data and voice.
Until the development community can come up with a method to run 3G data and voice at the same time (if possible) the modem switcher is the best answer to the problem.
Also the the T-Mobile Tab can be unlocked so that any GSM carrier's sim card can be used. This allows you use the sim cards from Simplemobile or any other GSM carrier and not be locked into a T-Mobile sim card.
Anyone live here in MD and want to make some money setting me up doing this thread hack/install for me?
I am a T-Mobile customer and here is set up on my T-Mobile tab:
1.Tab running Roto's JME v4 (European firmware that will allow voice+edge)
2. Roto's Modem Switcher (switch between 3G only or Voice+Edge)
3. My old Vibrant SIM card (Voice+Data)
4. Broke IMEI so i could use my Vibrant SIM to go online and stop getting re-directed to t-mobile site.
So basically i use my tab as a phone now but only getting voice+edge, if i want faster speeds i switch over to 3G using the Modem Switcher. The only way you can get both voice+3g is if you unlock the tab and use AT&T sim, if you want to use T-Mobile sim that option is not available unless a modem comes out that allows both voice+3g.
Hope this helps in making your decision.

Hello and thanks very much,
Seems that you are a match to my scenario. Are you happy with everything the way it works now (voice/2Gdata).
Do you have Caller ID working in any setting/switch?
And to make sure I understand this part. If I am in 3G mode I will NOT ever know of an incoming call by any pop up or beep or anything? The only way to know if some one even tried to call is to go to voice mail from 2G/voice being switched? (se, I am not a voice mail user. i have my Vibrant tmobile voice mail turned off at tmobile.)
So what i read at the top of this thread about having to unlock it is not the case for me?
Do I have to remove anything or add anything else?
Having to do anything at all other than these 4 things you listed for me is not needed?
That's very interesting. How do you "break" IMEI?
And these installs that you did list, is this the exact order to do these things?
And what about the thing where someone said I need a phone icon?
How do you switch to phone mode and dial?
BTW how is it as a phone with Bluetooth device? How is the volume (at both ends). Can you hear okay?
And I think one last question. If you happen to be in a wifi spot and using the tab in wifi mode, does the phone work at all?

No true. If you flash the at&t tab with Roto firmware, and install the bell modem, you can have 3g and voice with an at&t sim card, but again, at&t tab only does this.
Dear noreturn
If you so eager to get it and need help send me PM. I am almost your neighbor.
I would not recommend you breaking (meaning erasing file containing) Imei.
You have two other options
- get At&T tab, unlock it use on Tmobile with Vibrant sim. You will get voice and Edge which is very usable around dc-md-va. 3g will be only on att.
- get European Tab that is unlocked and use it on same way as #1 but no extra firmware flashing is needed.
Unlocking of either Att or Tmobile Tab is easy the same is true about flashing. however it takes more time.
Caller id works as on any phone.

Yes I really do want to get this samsung with voice.
So are you saying get this version of the Samsung tab and use my tmobile vibrant SIM?
Then install that modem switcher thing is all? And I guess I read about a dialer icon or something?
European Tab has everything for voice and Edge but Tmobile tab just cheaper.
Dialer comes installed with European, on Tmobile it appears after flashing.
Hope you understand your options. Modem switcher helps only if you have paid data service or erased your Imei. The last case is legally questionable thats why I would not advise it.

True. I should have clarified my response in that I was referring to the T-Mobile version.
I have the Hong Kong version, which has the same 3G frequence with At&t.
I use a At&T sim card and has 3G or H on phone and data works perfect.
For t mobile sim card you will only get edge for voice and data.
If you have any question you can email me.
Jimmy
Its kind of pricy,it cost me almost 700.00,but you don't have to change anything.
It depends on what carrier you use Tmobile 2G, AT&T 3G.
I love the device.you can hold it by one hand and use other hand to surf.

My New Nightmare Tablet

Picked up my Tablet yesterday from T-Mobile. Connected to the web etc using Wi-Fi because I had lots of software to download. Could NOT get any data with my sim card.
I am grandfathered into a data package with T-Mobile which gives me Unlimited Data for $19.99 plus a voice package. Support told me that for this tablet to work I had to upgrade to their Web Connect package for $39.95 and I would NOT have voice. [because they INSIST voice is IMPOSSIBLE with the Galaxy Tab.] [whatever]
I didn't want to agree to their upgrade because my sim works PERFECT in my Dell Streak 5 .. I believe that there is something wrong with the Gal-Tab. I kept telling them that the internet net was the same in their web connect package, it was just more expensive. They told me I was wrong. So I said .. OK make the change. They did and 12 hours later I still cannot connect.
I contacted them this morning and got them to give me my OLD $19.99 internet package and voice back ..
SO .. Any ideas ?? I even tried changing the APN on the Samsung to the same as on my streak. My streak is epc.mobile.com .. the Samsung had it as epc.tmobile.com
I had an issue with my data when I first got my tab too - the support personnel signed me up for an incorrect data package and all I got was a redirect to a Tmobile page when trying to use the browser (and no data on any other apps).
After talking to Support they changed my data package and voila, it worked.
So what's going on - unfortunately T-Mobile US filters Galaxy Tab's by IMEI. As such, they completely block it from working on any plan other than the data plan built for it. Despite the fact that the tab is technically capable of being a phone, T-Mobile will not allow it on their network.
So your telling me when I get my galaxy tab if I pop in my wifes T Mobile sim it wont work. That is truly annoying.
Instead of getting a new data package I am going to just pay the 10 a month to add mobile hot spot to her phone which will work great (maybe even faster because she has 4G on her phone)
THANKS .. I hate T-Mobile but have been with them for 8 years .. I guess I have just learned to put up with their NONSENSE !!
Since Dell Streak 5 came from AT&T Tmo does not have records and treats it as a smartphone. The same will be true for the Galaxy Tab purchased from AT&T. You will be able to get data and even voice using other Tmo Sim after reflashing proper firmware.
But since these two carriers use different frequencies for 3G you would get only EDGE.
It is hard for us to understand rational for such decisions. It seems that they are loosing Tab sales. Why do European carriers find it profitable while US not?
there is a way to get both voice+data on the tab using a standard t-mobile sim with data+voice. 1-you need to flash an European ROM to get voice and 2-then there is the issue of the IMEI which blocks the tab from accessing the web with a sim that already has data.
the second part cant really be posted as i was already removed by the mods due to rules violations, but it can be done i am using my Vibrants SIM on the tab.
Sounds like someone failed to do their homework. T-mo Tab is suppose to be data-only device and utilizes different APN's with custom modem firmware then smartphones, hence why your SIM would not work. You need to root the Tab, flash Euro firmware, then flash a custom modem. Instructions can be found in the development forum. Also, keep in mind that flashed T-Mo Tab can only get EDGE, no 3G.

That's not correct! You can get 3g data with your T-Mobile sim card with the correct modem. Just use roto-modem switcher

I think all our posts can confuse anyone.
The question was about using Tmobile smartphone Sim with the Tmobile Tab.
Let me say this: there is no way to get legitimely both voice and data on Tmo network using Tmo Sim. You can get voice without cellular data, or 3G data with different modem and separately paid broadband service Sim not the smartphone Sim.
I put my Sim card from my MyTouch 4G on the Tablet and phone works n/p but you need to flash a Euro rom! Thats it bottom line! Flash The rom and you will have phone access

International calling with the GS4 and GS3??

Going to Cancun on Thursday. So I called Spring about my GS4 & GS3. They enabled the codes so that they connect to the towers in Mexico. But you still get charged $2.99 per call and for each text message. But I thought i read you could put a Sim-Card in these phones for them to work international. Anyone ever tried this?

Ok, you need to do a little more research on the phones themselves. The GS3 does not have a removable SIM, it is embedded, so there's no chance of you inserting a local SIM etc.
The GS4 does have an accessible SIM slot but it is locked to Sprint. Even if you insert a non-Sprint SIM it won't work. Sprint want's you to pay their rates for international GSM roaming.
Even if you meet their requirements and get Sprint to unlock your GS4 SIM slot, it will work for calls and SMS with a non-Sprint SIM but no data (apparently some have found out, look in the forums)..

I haven't been out of the country yet to verify it, but I believe if you're rooted you will be able to get data by making a build.prop edit so you can add the appropriate APNs. Some people have reported though that they didn't need to do this, and data just worked automatically when they put in the SIM. I believe it was a UK carrier's SIM that just worked. I'll have a chance next week to try it out in Costa Rica and see if I can get data working.

Hmmm. Lots of conflicting info on this. Someone did the build.prop thing and mentioned that the apn options were grayed out, so he basically couldn't edit anything. Even posted screenshots. Please try out your scenario and keep us informed. Thanks.

[Q] Phone stuck on 3g. have to force it to LTE>

Been running CM 10.2 nightlies for a few weeks and everything has been smooth except the phone is stuck on 3g. If I go into mobile networks and network mode it was set to "CDMA + LTE/EvDo". Tried "Global" and still the same thing. The only way I can get it to work is if I choose "LTE" (and I did confirm it was running at full LTE speeds) which then makes calling impossible.
Not sure what to do, have played around with APN's but haven't found anything that works yet.
Also, tried updating to the latest radio and that didn't help.
Any ideas?
Follow my thread . I just went through the same thing. Short answer: new sim card

I saw your thread but I don't understand how I would be able to get LTE service (through forcing by selecting LTE only) if my SIM card was somehow fried. You would think if it was a bad SIM it would be more than just that. Also, both our cards "failing" in the same way.
I do remember dialing *228 a while back as I was having some connection issues but can't remember if I saw LTE before doing that. Almost think its Verizon's way of sticking it to those that unlock and flash roms (when you *228 you have to come replace your sim and get "outed").

One possibility is if you ever messed with *#*#4636#*#* & did anything to 3 dot menu band, you can have a hosed radio partition. Rsd restore is only fix.
Vzw does indeed want us not rooted as (edit)a lot rooted users cause them BIG headaches.

G935U firmware with Verizon MVNO

Hi guys,
I bought the unlocked firmware phone back in December 2016. The phone is great, the problem is I am using EcoMobile MVNO. It's refusing to recognize the network with the MVNO's sim card. I've spent hours on the phone with them and they claim all is OK on their (and Verizon's) end.
The phone sort of works, so I've just been grinning and bearing it so far. Using 4G switcher, I can put it in CDMA only mode, in which case it connects to '123456' and I can receive and make calls, and receive texts, but have no internet. If I put it in full LTE/GSM/CDMA auto mode, it connects to LTE, so I have internet, but it claims I'm not connected to Verizon network and in fact it's not available. So in this mode I can't receive calls or texts. Can't send texts under any mode. I've done a full factory reset at the MVNO's behest, of course that did nothing. The phone seems to connect fine to Verizon's network if I borrow someone elses's Verizon sim. My MVNO sim also works in my wife's iPhone5 without a problem. So it really seems to come down to the firmware on the phone. I'm holding out against hope that when Nougat comes to the G935U firmware, this problem is magically solved... but just in case decided to post here.
Please help, any ideas would be appreciated.

Welp, the 7.0 update is here, and it didn't fix my issue, in fact now I can't even get LTE data as I used to get. :crying:
So I had this issue when I first got the nougat update. When I got my S7 I put in my brothers sim card to made sure it worked on Verizon cause i was buying it from someome and anyway I activated my straight talk verizon SIM and everything was great until I got the update and my service was weird and I didn't know what to do and then it dawned on me, I put in an actual verizon SIM card, doesn't need to be active let it register and then put your SIM back in and everything was great! Hope this helps...
Switched to TotalWireless, phone works now. They first sent me a SIM which didn't work, then had to send a different, post-paid one.
I now suspect if ECO also sent me a postpaid based SIM it would start working. Things are always way too complicated when Verizon is involved.

I'm tempted to try this as I'm having the same problem with my 935U and Xfinity Mobile (Verizon MVNO) SIM, instead of connecting to the Verizon network, it connects to network 123456. I did load the 935V firmware, which worked fine, but I'd prefer to return to the U firmware if this would work. Is this still working for you, and if so, do you just need to put the regular verizon sim in once and from then on the MVNO sim will work, and continue to work including after a reboot?

I put in a Verizon SIM in it once and that was after the nougat update. But every time the phone restarts, I have to make a phone call for it to connect to the service or it will just stay stuck in "searching for service" but once the phone call connects, I hang up and everything works as it should.

Thanks, strange problem. I'll probably just stick with the 935V firmware for now as that's working fine (just have the Verizon bloat and failing the hotspot check). I also have a dialog going with Samsung support to see if they're aware of the problem and have a fix.
