How to manually overclock CPU w/ SA governor - Epic 4G General

So, there are some people here more/less technical than others ... I'm LESS technical (well, i'm actually an IT guy - but not a droid guru like some of you'enz).
I made up a wiki entry for how to manually edit the init.d files for some end users how may not want SETCPU (overclock) OR who may just not understand how to do it.
here's how I did it:
http://wp.me/pPiFl-1thttp://wp.me/pPiFl-1t
I don't know how to do the wiki thing on XDA with pictures ... so, sorry. So, if that's against the rules just delete me and yell at me. Also, please check over it and let me know if I can improve this process.
It's meant, honestly, to help people get the overclocking done simply and give back to the community. THANKS!!!!

FANTASTIC!
You're a lifesaver! SetCPU just seemed like one of those things we didn't need. And now I know how to change it easily! Props

I miss Benchmark..

Sorry guys , if you think this is gonna be flamed again please close it, just wanna give my little point of view,
I miss the benchmark coz at least it can guide me of which to choose ,
it 's useful for guiding and the rest i can judge myself , i will not complain anyone no matter the rom is good or not , thank you all the cookers , this place is Amazing.........
please do not get me wrong in anyway. i just really miss the benchmarks
hope many flashaholic loves this too, sometimes i flash 2 or 3 times a day from almost every rom ,Duttys, L26, Miri, Lost in Asia, Xant, Topix... enjoy..

Benchmark actually do not say anything about the ROM in everyday use. Stability. overall speed are iumportant factors when it comes down to choosing a ROM. None of these are properly reflected by a benchmark.
Not to mention that the benchmarks are flawed at best anyhow. The 'fastest' ROM out there was so crowned due to the filesystem being 'two times faster' than average - I don't know about you all but I don't spend a lot of time using the filesystem as such and any applications that read/write to it generally do enough processing so that the raw RW speed is of little importance anyhow.
I think we would gain a lot more from running real life testing on the various ROMs instead - such as batterylife, 3G/HSDPA handovers, signal strength, crashes/bugs (and yes, the 1922 bugs should be included) etc.
I would also like to see more of a variety between the ROMs. We only need so many releases where the base OS and Manila are exactly the same - I would prefer more UI customization, RemoteTracker implementation and so on.
Well to be honest I too miss benchmarks. And I dont really agree that benchmark doesnt reflect ROM speed. Because it really is faster in everyday use if the numbers are higher (and yes, you cant just look at total rating, but overall ratings invidualy. But thats my opinion
This is what happens when people become precious........the benchmark was nothing more than a handy guide, pity people couldnt control themselves and turned it into a competition.
I too miss benchmarks. I totaly disagree about the argument they don't reflect
real speed... Ever i use the top, i feel that is more fast. Stability is
another talking. It's a thing that you need to test yourself. We have a thread for people say their notes about stability.
People need understand each rom are focused in something... Some are in
beauty, some are in updated programs, some are in speed... etc etc...
Some cookiers try focus in speed, and when they can't be at first do an war against benchmarking. I hope their war against benchmarking does not start again.
the benchmarks were rigged. Good riddance.

I think pietrucci posted the instructions, athough possibly just a subset of them... he also posted that he wasn't willing to do it any more so please respect that.
If there is so much interest, feel free to start a new thread between yourselves.
with all respect to him i just wanna tell that i see his work usefull . no matter he would start or stop his thread. anyway i love this place .. the freedom of opinions
Same with me ...pls go on with the bench marking !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

loved the benchmark thread in the HD forums and found the (now outdated) HD2 benchmark thread very useful when i came over to this device
If you like it so much why don't you start a new thread and do it yourself?
How about you dont really post here, your work is done so just dont. We are not telling somebody to do the work and we will not do the work, because if we could, we would do it and not make this thread. We can atleast freely support his work now, cant we?

I post where I want and I don't need you to tell me what to do. I made the statement because he said he was no longer going to do it. Everybody wants someone else to do the hard work. Also it was never my intention for the benchmarks to close so don't make such a stupid statement.
Not gonna comment about your position in Benchmark closing, but its totaly inappropriately for you to be commenting on this thread. Hower he liked benchmarking and we liked his benchmarking. This thread is like "thank you" and "we will miss you" to him and also "is there any1 who could do the same?" to others. And I wont make another comment here and totaly not gonna argue with you, but you should give it rest.

There is nothing to give it a rest about. If someone wants to do the benchmarks in a fair and controlled manor, then fine I commend anyone who can spare that much of their Time. Enough Said
Thanks you appreciate my work (at least most of you). Although it's a lot of work I always enjoyed benching new Roms. But at the end there was so much negativity and competition that it couldn't last any longer obviously so itje closed it down.
I still benhmark but don't publish anymore.
Hi pietrucci,
Dont know about others but i loved your benchmarking. I was admiring how you made all this work just for this comunity to have at least something to judge ROMs. It was great while it lasted.
Did i understand it right that you are continuing all the benchmarking statistic but doesnt publish becuase of negative comments of certain people? If so then now that makes this sad. If they thought benchmark was useless, then they just shouldnt read them. For us who was really interested in all these numbers it was great and we loved it.
Well now I feel better when i know that you are still continuing and you are not bothered by them. Thank you for all the hard work you have done till recently =)

[REQ] Over-clocking guide

if someone please can post a noob friendly guide to over-clock the phone, please make it very detailed guide, because it is my first android phone and i'm not used to this environment yet, like where should i write insmod? i use windows 7 btw(if it makes any different)
thank you in advance, i'm sure it will be helpful for allot of people.
Thread moved to General.
There is already a thread about overclocking the DHD which gives instructions and there are videos around as well.
Read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815808 And read up on the G2 guide as well. Please read up about it fully first before diving in, while we all want to have fast devices, why would you like to overclock your phone, and have you fully read up about it before or are you just jumping in for the sake of it?
i did all what have mentioned above, and as i said it's my "firs" android phone, so i dont know "anything" so that why i requested the guide. thank you for passing by
Have a read through that link I posted. In there there is another link that gives instructions for the G2. There is also a video link in there as well that should help.

in that thread there are 2 methods, the Micheal method and that Gscript method, which both i cant do the needed files for, the modules, where to write "insmod"
thats why i needed a noob friendly guide starting from point zero, keep in mind that not just me who needs it
Again agree with hackage this isn't for new users its causes reboots and will burn your battery if not set up right and the tables are incomplete unless your going to write your own scripts etc etc
My problem with people asking for quick guides or n00b guides is that they get the guide, jump in, and inevitably moan when something goes wrong. If people read up about how to do it and don't understand, do some more research on what you don't understand. If people read up absolutely everything about how the process works, like for each kernel, addresses etc, not only will they then know how to do it, but they will also have a far better understanding of how the whole system works, and are better for it. The more you know about your system, the more you can understand and make progress instead of hoping someone will do it for you.
In saying that, we all get stuck sometimes, and we need to ask help, but everything to do with overclocking the Desire HD is on these forums, all you have to do is read.

Writing THE guide to modding the Arc

I was wondering, any objections if I start working on a guide to all things modding-related on the Arc?
I'm not the most technically-proficient so I'll probably need some help to start off with.
But once I understand something, I can generally explain it pretty clearly.
So anyone mind if I get to work on it?
And anyone feel like lending a hand?
It is a good idea but first we need to find subject many people are interested. You are serving this community the best as you could, why would anyone mind it?
Thanks for offering it.
Well, it would be a guide to rooting, unlocking the bootloader, all that stuff.
But unlike the current guides, it would all be in one place and it would basically start from scratch.
In my experience, one of the more common problems around here is that guides are patchy, they assume varying amounts of prior knowledge, some use confusing or conflicting terms.
My intention is to start from scratch, explain everything in order and make it as simple as possible to find out what you want to do.

Not quite.
More like this.
The first post is like the contents, with links to subsequent posts, one of which would be a guide to unlocking your bootloader, another would be a guide to rooting, another would be a guide to updating your software etc etc.
Basically, a single guide to replace the miscellany of different guides we'd end up with otherwise and much clearer/easier to follow.
No offence to Bin4ry, his work in rooting the Arc is amazing but his 'how-to' is a little unclear...
Great idea Step I am a noob & i will definetely love this kind of guide
So trhe first question is, apart from unlocking the bootloader, rooting and updating the phone, what else would such a guide need to cover?
its always good to see these types of threads in the different phone sections. Definitely a good thing mate, you go for it
I will, just as soon as I can get answers to a few questions first.

Good idea. Needs some loyalty from the ts to update the topic in order to keep it up to date (and therefore successful), but if you think you can do it, please do, it will help a lot of people for sure.

I'd like to see a section on Performance mods - overclocking and anything else that can be done to improve performance.
Overclocking is just a matter of installing an app like Set Vsel.
It's not really quite the same as flashing and so on.
don't think the kernel supports overclocking at the moment.. can't get it to go above 1024Khz..
I think it's more a matter of the app being updated to support the Arc but I may be wrong.

No, sadly its not that easy, the kernel restricts the processor from going over that value. Set CPU merely reads that value, to prevent people overclocking 500mhz to 2Ghz and melting there phones.
The kernel needs to be tweaked to allow higher values. But that should be in the pipeline now that bootloaders are unlocked and phones are rooted.

Then how do you explain handsets like the Motorola Defy which can be OCed despite the fact it's impossible to modify the kernel?
I guess Moto mustn't have restricted it in their stock kernel
I guess - though it's not like Motorola to do anything modder-friendly

I Know This Looks Redundant...But It's Not

I know this may seem redundant but it's not. I'm trying get used to the boards because I'm new and I don't know my way around at all. I know no one really has time to hunt down threads and stuff like that but I'm hoping more for references to developers who are more detailed with their steps and certain things they develop.
A Kernel for example. There are SOOOO many threads regarding Kernels for my phone and, you have to admit, for a n00b it's a bit confusing and difficult to sort through when you don't know what you're doing. So, I'd wonder who the best member would be to look for when I search threads. Things like that. I'm not really asking for shortcuts to this, I'm asking for a little help finding my way around.
I plan to do the research myself still, don't get me wrong, I'm just trying to get a starting point. I'm already rooted I'm good on that, so, I'm not totally out of the loop lol
Feel free to message me! Ill gladly help

Iknow exactly how u felt. Feel free to PM me also if u need help. The forums here on xda are very very intimidating if your new.
There are many people here willing to help you and answer your questions
Sent from the only thing i need.
There is a big following behind certain ones since they may be included in Roms. Please anyone put theirs in this thread. The main ones people seem big on are:
Twilight: which is included in SRF, it's fast, stable and goes to 1.3 ghz, future developments are on hold as the dev is busy like we all get
Genocide: which works and plays well with others from what I hear, it goes to 1.4 ghz and needs to use the program he lists
Clean Kernel: which now supports Clockwork Mod in the market, i don't know much but assume it's pretty clean
Vision: 1.1 is a big hit. 1.2, if you can find it may either kill your phone or make it a super beast. it doesn't seem to be known why. 1.3 is about to be dropped with SRF 1.2
Don't let those who all too often clutter posts telling people redundant obvious facts like 'search'. All they do is make searching that much more difficult as you have to read tons of posts that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand. Your best bet is to just keep watching the forums, see who posts what, and don't be afraid to bookmark worthwhile threads that point to other threads that have relevant info.
Furthermore, don't' be afraid to make a post if you haven't found exactly what you're looking for. Chances are besides the typical trolls who will tell you to search, one member will chime in with info that will take them 2 minutes to write but you couldn't find even after 30 minutes worth of searching.
Also, don't narrow your search to a specific phone. There are several quality android phones out there that share a lot of the same specs / attributes. So if you have an epic, an answer can reside in several 'other phone' areas as well.
After all, the search function is pretty dumb....It finds key words, not solutions.....
Do carefully research flashing anything from other forums. Major files could brick your phones. Apps and other fun things can work across the spectrum, though. Just read a lot.
Tread lightly around here is my only advice. There are way more trolls than helpful people on here.
That being said, welcome!

As far as kernels go I swear by Genocide. I'll follow Rodderik straight to hell if that's where he wanted to go. It's fast, stable and gives me great battery life. I'm testing his latest build which now also supports clockwork mod. He'll probably be releasing it soon.
With Genocide you'll need to use voltage control to enable overclocking and undervolting (if desired). Read the Genocide OP for more info, it's very well written and full of good info.
The other kernels are probably good too, but I've never run them. There was some speculation a while back that a bad kernel out there may have lead to hard bricks. I really don't know what ever came of that, but Genocide never had any problems like that whatsoever.

[Q] Which are the advantages of changing Kernel?

I'm practically new on the android universe and I've seen many time people talking about changing phone's kernel. My understanding of that is limited so I must ask, what advantages do I get by doing this procedure on my phone? Can anyone answer me in simple words? I don't know much about android but I've learned so much here on XDA and managed to do some stuff with my device that I didn't knew I could do.
Thanks!
English is not my main language so if I mistype something please, be my guest, I'll be pleased to take corrections. I don't like to use Google translate, I rather like learning from people.

First of all, overclocking cpu to 1.8 GHz. In addition, developers can add new features to the kernel (eg, swap and zram, support OTG, latest drivers etc.), optimize performance and power consumption..
Its mainly for performance ( Overclocking, Underclocking) to save battery.
It adds many features and it makes the device more customizable.
Thanks for your answers! they really helped me. Now I know something new, I'm trying to understand how you guys work on creating ROMs, so maybe in the future I can create something and shareit with XDA comunity. :good:
