Anyone notice that you have the ability to do an early upgrade on your Xoom already in your verizon account online? I am thinking about transfering this upgrade to my main phone line so i can upgrade to the TB, but I am not sure if that will essentially lock me into a long term contract on my xoom...
Anyone know how this works??
I noticed that too.the only upgrade I will be doing is to get the Xoom 2 lol

Did you guys sign a contract? If you didn't...of course it has an early upgrade, because you didn't use the subsidy by signing a 2 year. If you 'upgrade' the line to a phone it will lock that phone into a contract and cancel service on the xoom. Exchanging your old phone for your new phone will break the old phone's contract.
If your xoom is not under contract there is no way to become under contract accidentally. Well, unless you do somethibg dumb like ask for a contract.

Not entirely true, at least for all devices for verizon. For instance I have a phone I outright bought from eBay then added to my verizon account. I still have to wait the full 18 months to upgrade the line.
I am having the same thing occur with my activated xoom as well , no contract

Classic verizon, you're being taken advantage of. There is absolutely no reason to be in contract if you bought the phone yourself. Did you replace a phone that was in contract? Because if so that makes sense, otherwise they have locked you into an agreement for no reason.

NAAAA they wouldnt do that would they?

I looked through the threads and didn't see any topics about this, but if there are, my bad!
My question sort of has two parts:
Can I buy an EVO at full retail price so I'm not under contract? I just called Sprint customer service and they said they don't offer devices at full retail price, but could I buy it from Walmart or Best Buy, then have Sprint activate it on a new account? The customer service rep did say that in order to activate a new number, I would have to sign up for a 2 year contract, but I'm not sure if that's true if I bring my own device.
The other part of my question is, if I can get an EVO without a contract, could I then be on a family plan with my girlfriend if she gets an EVO for $200 on a two year contract? So it'd be a family plan split between two EVOs, one under a two year contract and one without a contract.
I'm hoping I can somehow make this work, I'm not a fan of contracts (I'm on T-Mo with no contract and I'm not sure what the status of my gf's dumb-phone on Verizon is).
Any help would be great! Thanks
That makes no sense you can buy it on Sprint's site at full price.
$450. Best Buy sells it for $500. You do have to have a plan that supports the phone though. Anyone who tells you differently is lieing because they don't make commissions when you don't extend your contract.

Good luck finding a EVO off contract. At the Best buy and Sprint stores they were being real stingy with them, lying to people trying to get one without a contract and saying they were out of stock and they only have reserved phones.
Unless you already had the number that you wanted to purchase the off contract evo on already tied to sprint, you are out of luck. Once we activate a new line on a phone it will automatically create a new contract. It's the same concept as bringing in an old phone to activate it, you will still have a 2 yr contract but you will be eligible for your upgrade at any point in time. What you are trying to do is pointless because you still end up with a contract. Might as well just pay discounted price.

If he already has a plan that supports the Evo he won't need to extend the contract. The $10 data charge is treated like an add-on. Best Buy sold the guy next to me a full price Evo, that being said opening week is the hardest to buy a full price phone off of contract.

Correct. But he said that he was with T-mobile. So in going with that I'm making the assumption that he doesn't have a sprint line, and he is more than likely porting over the number. If he does port over the number to create a new line then all the afformentioned contract info still applies. And at that, even with the small amount, at my store we were selling phones flat out if the customer did not yet qualify. A sale is a sale is a sale.
Oops I missed the TMobile part. Yeah new contract is the only way to go.

I strongly recommend reading your contract, because selling your phone (without putting a new phone on your contract to take the service of your old phone) may be seen as abandoning your service. If you abandon your service, then the provider may consider that an early termination. That is what happened to me when I was with Verizon and got rid of my phone before having a replacement phone added to my account.
A contract is a contract. Getting rid of your phone does not change that.

If you break your contract, you will be charged $200.00 for disconnect, then another $200.00 for early termination, plus a bad credit mark.If you replace it with another phone, your good.

If he wants to cancel his contract he would only have to pay the eft fee last I checked and the remaining bill he has. I recently did that
Also if you sell the phone and don't pay your bill etc, the new buyer will be screwed. The esn will be blacklisted. So pay your etf and sell the phone.

I want out of my contract because:
1. My parents pay my bill, i need to start paying for it myself.
2. I would like a new phone
3. My friend is a manager for sprint so i would get his discount on my bill and i would not ever have a contract.

nobody calls my EVO a fizzle and gets away with it!!
if you just sell it, then the person who buys it is screwed cuz the ESN will be locked, then you'd have to pay a fee, or you could just stop paying and say screw them, go to verizon and get a new plan, just can never go back to Sprint. Believe it or not, Sprint does not actually go on your credit

Have your friend waive your ETF fee. Are your parents phones on the same plan? If so don't force roam or you may have their lines cancelled as well. The only phone out right now that is reasonably worth going thru the hassle to get rid of your contract for is the sgs2 and its not that GREAT, yet its still lacking in the development area, and has issues with calls if you don't flash the updated radios. The MOTO Photon is a pain with its jacked up bootloader encryption, last I checked fully unldocking it broke 4g and temp rooting caused the phone resource to freeze up and FC randomly, and the 3vo well the 3vo is a holographic headache. Anything I did in 3d on it gave me a splitting headache, same with my dad. He had/has all 3 phones he ditched the 3vo for the Photon got stuck with the Photon then added another line just to get the SGS2 to get rid of the photon. Hope that helps. Hopefully Sprint will drop something better around the holidays or early next year when my upgrade is ready.

See if you can assume the payment from your parents/turn it into your own single-line account. I wouldn't do anything to goof your credit or your parents at this point; easy to screw up, tough to repair. The Evo still rocks, I've stopped having gadget lust (mostly) since getting mine 9 months ago. Learn to root it and it can be like a new phone whenever you want

OP,
If you are getting the phone in your name, why not do a change of financial responsibility?
If you are wanting another phone, you need to either fulfill the contract, pay full price for the new phone, or call Sprint and ask what the ETF is.
See, I am in a situation where I "want" another phone to replace my EVO. I am simply tired of replacing the EVO. My upgrade isn't until March or April 2012 (different departments tell me different things). Anyway, my ETF is only $60 at the moment. "If" there was a must have replacement, I could call Sprint to cancel this line and pay the ETF. This will allow me to sell my EVO with a clear ESN. I could then add a line to my account, get new user pricing, but loose my current phone number (a Sprint Retention Employee suggested this option).
Or, I could pay the ETF and get a phone like the Droid Razr or Galaxy Nexus when it launches (soon?)

So recently I ported to AT&T ETF free due to the employee discount change. Well my service with AT&T was so horrible that I transfered back 5 days later. Before I left, Sprint told me I could buy out my wifes contract to make her eligible for an upgrade, which I declined.
After porting back to Sprint, I called to buy out the rest of the contract and they told me she was already eligible and there was no remaining contract.
I called back the next day and verified that all my lines that I had ported over to AT&T then ported back were all eligible for upgrades, and they definitely were

No, I don't think that's a screw up. You chose to terminate it because Sprint was in breach of contract. Once you did that you are eligible to sign a new one regardless of how long it has been since you signed the original one.
So you didn't even had to transfer. You could just call and tell them you want out of the contract and would like to sign up for a new one. That qualifies you for an upgrade too.

Legally speaking... it does. Because your first contract was in breech of contract. When you signed for the discount to apply to all or just 2 lines (whenever you signed), that was your contract. They changed it, hoping that you would not notice it in the 30 days. Therefore you can get out of your contract and get back into a new one, now knowing that the terms are what they are.
I put this in layman's terms, so my 'translation' may... suck.
But yes, legally, it's acceptable. Sprint would most likely just reset all upgrades on the plan before they would just let you leave ETF Free. Resetting upgrades keeps you.

I have the original Evo4G which I got almost 2 years ago. I haven't upgraded while on Sprint so I am wondering how it works. Last time I upgraded I had Verizon so it was a new every 2 type deal where I was getting a new phone for free. I see sprint gives a $150 credit. Does that mean I have to pay $400 for the new evo lte? Can someone shed some light on this before I go to the Sprint Store as I want to get the best deal I can without them bending me over. Thanks!
Ultimately you get more than 150 off. Basically the Evo lte will cost you 199 at sprint, as will any of their top tier phones. 199 is kind of sprints Max price on upgrade or new phone.
VZW gave em free, huh? Nice.

International version won't work on sprint, and cdma devices can't be unlocked, that only works on GSM carriers I.e. Besides not being tied to a contract, what are some of the benefits to buying unlocked phone - freedom to choose from multiple carriers? I live in ATL, and Sprint is about to release their LTE here, so my thought was to wait for the G S III when it's released.
Activation fees are $36. Check out their discount program, credit unions waive it.

About the unlocked question, sprint has to load every esn into a database unlocked Intl or GSM only phones are not and therefore cannot be activated. If you buy a sprint phone on ebay make sure the esn is clear before buying. Sprint will be able to check the status for you.

Having never gotten a "brand new" phone before, I am curious about the timeline... I'm shocked we still don't know when the phone will be released - how hard is it to figure out when you want to release a phone?
So, with my impatience leading the charge here, how long was it between the EVO 4G pre-order and the actual release date? How about with the EVO 3D? Thanks everyone! I wish they would tell you upon pre-ordering.
Sprints upgrade discount is a complete lie!!!! Sprint customers who's contract just ran out will pay the same price as anyone just walking in and buying the phone. Now Verizon actually gives their customers, who's contract just ran out, and a discount. Verizon discount comes off the 2year contract price, and so you pay less than others starting a new contract. Sprint just makes the normal 2year contract discount $150 less than it really is, but then adds in your $150 upgrade discount; so the 2year contract price comes out to be the same. How ridiculous!!
When I left Verizon for Sprint 2 years ago I was excited that their 2year discount was more than Verizon's.. Just recently found out that I was wrong though, and you get NO 2year discount from Sprint in actuality.... If Sprint didn't have unlimited data, cheaper monthly plans, and carry better phones, then I might go back to Verizon. And sadly, as of lately Sprint is the best at getting in phones, AT&T seems to be getting the best devices for the last 6 months or so... AT&T coverage is a joke in my area, and I'd probably pay twice as much as I do with Sprint every month, or they would be my current choice of carrier.....
I am thinking about joining Verizon but am holding off until the new batch of phones come out (SIII or iPhone).
If switch now, is it possible to join as a new customer but not buy new devices and not sign a contract?
What I want to do is buy some used phones off eBay, join Verizon and wait to the new phones come out. Then I would sign a contract to get subsidized phones. Is this possible?
Or can I join with old phones and sign a contract but save the subsidies I get for the new contract for a few months to apply to the new phones when they come out?

If you sign now there will be almost no way you can get the upgrade price on a new phone in anything less than a year, and probably very close to two years from now. I'm pretty sure the prepaid phones are the only devices you can run on VZ without contract.
If you want to get the 2-year price on a new phone you will likely have to wait, but I would suggest you actually go in to a VZ store and talk to a manager about this. There's always the chance they would let you delay using your contract price for a certain amount of time because I doubt they want to lose 6 months or more worth of service fees simply because the phone you want isn't out yet. No guarantees but it seems worth a shot.
If you buy the phone outright or thru other sources its month to month if u buy subsidized ur on contract for 2 years

I'm pretty sure if you bring your own phone, you can go postpaid and month-to-month and cancel anytime without an ETF. However, I'm not sure if you'd get an upgrade to use later down the road.
I know Sprint is a carrier that requires a contract even if you bring your own device to them. I had assumed they wouldn't so I was pissed at that fact and terminated with them within the return period without incurring an ETF.
That's correct about sprint and u can use an upgrade anytime with Verizon if ur month to month but it would obviously defeat the purpose

Sprint requires you to sign a two year contract even if you bring your own device. Verizon does not. I know this because I have done this with both carriers.
