Trouble Searching XDA with the Xoom - Xoom General

Trying to search the forum is tricky for me. When I tap on "search this forum" and tap on the field, the keyboard pops up for a second and then disappears. It happens with both the stock and Dolphin HD browsers and with both the stock and Thumb keyboards. Anybody else?

I've had this problem since day one (with any/all browsers) on my g-tablet. I've posted, but gotten no replies. I thought it was an Android thing. I'd love to get a solution for this also...

Its an Android problem. Happens on phones too.

About to give up on the browser

The browser is driving me nuts. Even the simplest of tasks are so frustrating. For instance if I do a google search, then click a link in the search, look at the page, then press back, google loads back up as far as the logo but none of the search results display until I refresh. Seems to only be google as other sites load ok when pressing back. This is ridiculous if you ask me. Then there is the keyboard lag when typing, like right now, I can type 3 or 4 words before any of it shows up. Trying out the latest dolphin hd browser now to see if it's any better. Keyboard lag is still there but at least google loads properly when pressing back.
Another annoyance is now there is no highlighting of a link when you tap it leaving you guessing and hoping you tapped in the right spot.
Not sure why it's so hard to get these little things right. Seems as if we've gone 1 step forward, 2 steps back.
Trying to keep the faith that these issues will be hammered out.
edit: And how could I forget that the damn browser can't even paint the screen fast enough when you scroll. My nook color blows this thing away in the browser department.
edit2: Text randomly fails to display when typing into text boxes. On the bright side though, I seem to have good luck with browser 720p on youtube.
Im having the same issues as you lol, i have opera and dolphinhd but i like the feel of the stock browser for some reason. I hope theyfix it soon.......and can i get a homepage button on the toolbar and not under the bookmark page lol.
I am on 3.1 and have the issue and it been driving me nuts as well. Having to refresh each time is a pain. I hope there is a fix for this soon.

I agree that the stock browser is the one of choice for me too but are having similar issues, although not major, still needs to be addressed.
I have tried the Dolphin browser and thought that I found the perfect browser until I tried to use citrix, this caused the browser to freeze and required a restart to get the browser working again
Also the browser seems to work great when its working but does tend to stop working if you use for approximately 10-15mins, well it did for me anyway. In this regard, the stock browser is far more reliable.
I am however optimistic and feel that the issues will be ironed out. So far I am very happy with the tablet in general.
I know what you mean about the google search problem. I found that disabling the Google Instant seeing in Settings/Labs helped.
the main annoyance for me is the dreadful keyboard lag - writing this response was painful!
you're right google shows up blank. Usually i dont go back and fourth like that. I just press and hold the search result and choose 'open in new tab', then close tab when im done.
I just keep the search results on one tab and view pages in new tabs.
Temp fix for blank page after back button in google search.
1. go to Google.com
2. select settings from upper right and click on search settings
3. Disable Google instant
I have tried this with Google instant on and I get the blank page when the back button is pressed.
With Google instant off I get my search results.
I hope this work for all
Also seem to eliminate most of the keyboard lag.

Thanks. This helped me. I also switched from the Asus keyboard to the standard Honeycomb keyboard. Even when docked this seems to make typing more responsive.
Typing in the opera mobile browser is much more responsive. It has its quirks, like always displaying mobile sites and having only flash lite but keyboard lag is reduced.
The newest dolphin that I just downloaded this morning is flying! Well, compared to what I'm used to with the stock browser. I believe it is version 5.0.1.
Anyone else having good luck with it?
Google issue is gone, typing seems fast etc.
I don't know if this is the proper thread, but I'll try since it recites various browser issues. I use Google Chrome on my desktop. I am extremely frustrated in my inability to duplicate the most rudimentary of reply functions found therein in the Android browser. These functions include the various Bold, Italic, Underline, Color, Font, etc., symbols shown in the reply boxes on this site, coupled with a total inability to cut and paste to get rid of the message at the bottom, or alternatively, to conveniently respond to various sentences or paragraphs in the original message. I am quite willing to concede that I simply missed how to do this. If anyone reading this can advise what I am not doing correctly, I would appreciate it. I tried the GMail browser this morning, but tried the stock browser yesterday. I recall the same problem with each. Thanks in advance.

yep you missed it
what you need its an ipad, its all done for you there.
Found it somewhere but it fix the lagging:
Instructions:
■Open the browser and type the following in the address
about:debug
■Nothing will appear to have happened; go to the menu button in the top right though and you will notice some extra menu items have been added.
Select Settings
■In the Settings menu select Debug on the left and uncheck Enable OpenGL Rendering to turn it off.
■You’re done.
that made things for worse for me...
things i tried that made it better..
don't use the asus keyboard, disable google instant search, plugins on demand, but still, the overall responsiveness of the device is not good. even loading a phone app like tapatalk it struggles to scroll smoothly, let alone rendering a web page.
Again, it's a real shame. I think they probably should have spent 3-6 more months getting things right as those of us seeking to exit the ios world are not going to be left with good impressions of android. I personally realize things will improve, but many will just try once and move on when they can't even type a basic response in the web browser. I would just about consider typing lag to make the device unusable.. it's that bad.

Disabling OpenGL slows down loading of webpages though.

Is there a patch for the "in browser" typing delay?

3.1 didn't help resolve the annoying typing delay on this pad. I played with a Xoom and the small Samsung and it didn't have this problem.
Have there been any patches or fixes released? I was really hoping 3.1 would do it, but it didn't.
I also would love to get this. It's literally the ONLY issue I have with this device.
Didn't someone say turning off some option will help or switch to generic keyboard? I'm not really sure what the issue is, I don't think I've had it.
I noticed this problem pretty quickly and was very bothered by it. I tried out a couple different browsers and found that Opera was the only one with good keyboard responsiveness. While it may not be the best browser in other respects, it trumps all other browsers for this reason.
Now I wish there were an easy option to turn off tap-to-click. Damn thing throws me off everytime I type.
is this with the dock or the onscreen keyboard as well?

Yea, me too. It's pushing me to reconsider the Samsung 10.1.
I've only experienced typing lag on vBulletin based forums sites with the stock browser - and for example here on XDA if you choose the classic skin things improve quite a bit.
Its been mentioned many times before, that the "lag" isn't a "Transformer issue" per-se but a stock browser problem on certain sites. I've tried XDA with Firefox and Dolphin Mini and the there's no real lag that i can see, which further points to the stock browser..
Or are you guys experiencing lag on any web page with the stock browser?? (in which case I'll get my coat)
Try switching to the Honeycomb keyboard instead of the Asus keyboard.

Yes. The amount of lag may vary slightly between sites but it is still there and annoying. Dolphin made no difference for me. I've tested both the Xoom, Samsung and Acer in stores and they don't seem to have the problem.
The best test for A/B comparing purposes is to just type the numbers 1 thru 9 quickly and see what's left when you are done. For me when I'm done "7" is usually on the screen.
Try this temp fix
1. go to google.com
2. select settings in the upper right and click on search settings
3. disable google instant
This seems much better for me. Others may vary.

I've figured it out. It's a text box issue. Go into XDA forum settings. Change the text box to "simple "and skin to classic and enjoy lag free typing on this forum.
I'm pretty sure ASUS will post an update for this typing lag... althought typing lag has improved only slightly by changing user agent to Tablet (or to Android on dolphin browser)... will just have to be patient on the update

Makes no difference here (and of course it wouldn't help when using any other website that requires a typed response).

Been there, done that, no help.
I hate the responsiveness of the Asus keyboard, but the stock keyboard does a nice job. I wish the layout was better, but I will take the responsiveness of the stock keyboard over the layout of the Asus one with crappy responsiveness.

Both keyboards are the same for me. I just came back from the mall where I tested a Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab , T-Mobile G-Slate and iPad and none of them had any delay anywhere. I simply go to the forum, log in and type 123456789 in an empty reply to a message and see what's left when I am finished typing. The only problematic one seems to be the Asus.
U know what , out of the typing delay frustration i went on to try my most trusted browser for my froyo phone, miren and walla no lag in typing. But since miren is not build for honeycomb there are some fc here n there as expected. But the feature i love most, the smart full screen still works in honeycomb yay !!!
Part from that, it also doesnt have the image tearing issue when u scroll the browser quickly most probably related to hardware acceleration that is implemented on honeycomb browser.
Conclusion, the typing lag is definitely caused by the browser itself or even the webkit itself :-(
Too bad miren's developement stopped :-(
I think there's more than one "typing delay" issue here.
The one that I'm having 1) does not depend on which keyboard is used, and 2) is just as bad on Xoom. Just go to http://slashdot.org, open any story, and try to post a comment there - and watch characters you type being entered at like 1 per second...
I am typing this on the dolphin browser HD which has just been updated today. I am using Smart keyboard pro and cannot notice any lag. This reply is on the XDA 2010 theme.

I just tried downloading the free trial of Smart Keyboard Pro and keep getting "Purchase Cancelled, error processing purchase."
Hmmm, seems I can't download anything from the Market ... get the same error with Dolphin.

Thumb Keyboard = Way Less Lag

This May just be Another Rant Thread But Hear Me Out. If you Hate The Touchscreen Keyboard Lag on stock Transformer Keyboard then You Really Should Try some other options. I switched to Thumb Keyboard and although not Perfect It waaay Snappier Than the Stock Asus one. If you havent tried out other Keyboards you really Should. It Can make a World of Difference. Plus Thumb Keyboard is So Highly Customizable!

Troll. -_-
Don't really want to buy the Thumb Keyboard yet. I have Swiftkey and gave that a try. It lags badly with the stock browser, same as the ASUS and Android keyboards.
All the keyboards work just fine with Opera though (and they worked okay with 3.0.1 before the 3.1 update).
go to stock browser type in about:debug press enter. now go to settings and new settings will be there uncheck the first option... download and install thumb keyboard NO LAG!

I know this is off-topic for this thread, but I find it quite interesting how often I find people who used to type like I did.
As You Read In My First Paragraph, I Have Now "Out Grown" (Or, Morever, Forced Myself Out Of The Habit) Typing In Camel Caps.
The Weird Thing Is, In My Research It Apparently Only Becomes a Habit For Programmers. I Started Typing Like This At A Very Young Age, Probably To Make Myself Seem Older Than I Was Online, And I Always Wonder The Circumstances For Other People Whom I See Type Like This On Internet.
In any case, thanks for the tip. I'm getting a Transformer 5 days from now, and was looking on XDA in the meantime.
Just got this keyboard, completing changes the way I type on the tabet for the better
It's on sale at Amazon for .99 right now. There's still some lag, bit it's hard to notice while you're typing. Indispensible.

So you mean uncheck " enable opengl rendering in the debug options". I just did that and it is much better with and without the keyboard, also without thumb keyboard.
Trying out Thumb Keyboard, I can definitely vouch for the improved responsiveness in typing, even on demanding sites such as this forum. The lag is more bearable now, so maybe I could go back to the stock Browser since it has the best layout of all the others, IMO.
There is a new swype 3.0 keyboard available in beta that works great!

Can't use keyboard in search

I think its absurd that the search popup on this site will not work with on screen keyboards on my galaxy tab 10. Anyone else have this issue. I have to use advanced search always.
I tried to use it yesterday and it just popped out and then closed repeatedly. It was a little frustrating but hey, they have an app for that. Really, though, i just went into start new thread and started a title with the query I needed and it brought up posts with related titles. Doesn't fix it but it will get you by.
Just noticed that too. It is really annoying when you can't search.

Stock Browser 'find on page' is broken in latest update

On a brand new A500, updated to 3.1 OTA and I have noticed that the 'find on page' in the stock browser does not work. I usually use it if I browse the long list of XDA forums and am trying to find something specific rather than scrolling forever.
Does anyone else care to test this and see if it's broken for them too?
I tested on a small web page and it seemed to work, but when testing on the root of xda developers forum, it does not work. I restarted the tablet, problem still persists. Then I tried doing a factory restore, still the same issue. I also have a Xoom running HC3.2 and it does not have this problem.
Try searching for text like Acer or Xoom on http://forum.xda-developers.com
It will find the instances of what you search for, but the browser will not scroll to where it's located. = broken!
Rob
using the .11 ota build of 3.1 it seemed to work fine for me on the page you linked. It scrolled to and highlighted both of your test words.
Stock browser, not rooted
Hi,Mine works as well I tried test words acer, xoom, thread, and gingerbread.
Now what I have noticed is it only finds the words on the visable page (whats on screen) and only highlights the search words once you have scrolled it onto the visable page. if it is not on the visiable page then it does not show it in the search results.
I called acer and this is normal function for thier stock browser. have you tried to use a different browser as I am sure the result your looking for is you want the search to cover the whole page even the parts not on screen?

The proper behaviour I believe is that the stock browser (like any other browser) is supposed to scroll to where it finds the first instance of what you type and have the letters highlighted. It works (scrolls) correctly on small/medium pages, but fails to scroll to the highlighted text on very large pages like the one I posted. It just sits at the top of the page. The navigation arrows to move to where it found the text (if more than once) also do not work in this case. On a Xoom with 3.2, this feature works fine on the link I provided. I search for 'acer' and the browser scrolls automatically to where it finds the first instance. On the A500 with the latest OTA update, it finds and highlites the text 'acer', but does not scroll to it.
Hope that makes sense.
Rob
mine also does not scroll to the first instance. is it just on the xda web site? or all web pages in your browser? if just xda may have something to do with the web page it self and your browser.

XDA is the first and only one I noticed it on so far. I use the 'find on page' feature a lot because that forum list is so long that it's otherwise hard to find what you are looking for by manually scrolling.
Rob
I have checked my browser and brightness. Both work fine (tested on xda forums) but I'm using a custom browser.apk taken from ASUS Transformer so I can't judge the official version.
I did use the official 3.1 version for a long time (until last week) and search worked just fine. It highlighted and jumped to the first word as it was supposed to. I didn't bother to check if it was the latest version because I'm using a custom rom from day 1 (well actually not day one because we didn't have recovery then but you get the picture ) and I don't get regular OTAs as you guys so maybe it wasn't the latest version.

I tried many times to get the auto brightness working and it would not. Now, coincidentally I just tried it again 1 minute ago and it's working... Go figure .. lol
I'm still trying to figure out this browser glitch...
Rob
Hey rob I dont know if you use custom roms or not but ,I put the new Virtuous XooM H.C. 3.2 on the acer and everything works like a champ. yes its honeycomb 3.2 and fixes all the bugs at least that i can find.
Browser search works right(as mine did not either) wi-fi and gps work like a charm, battery life is way better, the interface is nicer and smoother, it has the new option to make programs tat were made for phone screem fit the tablet screen(nice), and all my media stirages work external usb keyboards harddrives and all, IT just works.
its a shame the tablet is awsome but acers software seems to ruin alot. so far everycomplain i have read about the iconia is not the hardware but acers software thats the problems even the wi-fi and gps issues all seemed to get fixed with software.
Heh. That's why I use Tabonnay rom as a base and then strip out all the Acer and google stuff that I can.
EDIT: Damn now my light sensor isn't working anymore. Meh I'll just get used to it. It's bound to start working sooner or later.
EDIT2: Fixed it.
