Just messing around on my xoom and found a nice feature. If you press on the far right or left of the screen it quickly flips to the next coresponding homescreen. Sorry if most already know this just thought I would add to the community since I have benifited from the hard work of others here on XDA. If you have already found this then sorry for the post.
Edit:
Seems to work in the app drawer as well. Enjoy!

The menu icon on the home screen takes a lot of space. There could be 4 icons in there instead. Can it be removed and then bond to another phisical key like the press of the ball?

Not really understanding what your asking. Are you talking about when you hit your menu button?
I am also not really understanding the question which is why I didn't respond the first time the OP created the thread.
To OP:
Please don't make multiple threads for the same question just because your not getting a response!

Ok I'm glad I wasn't the only one. This was the first thread I looked at when I got into work. Had to wipe the sleep out my eyes take a sip of coffee and try to figure out this question.
Are they talking about the app drawer and phone tab slider on a Hero ROM maybe?????

Thats what I was thinking, but not quite sure. Just waiting on OP to respond.
I think he/she means the app draw, that's the only thing that makes sense.
1) That would require a complete re-write of the app
2) It wouldn't give you enough vertical space for the icon and text
3) All the buttons are already used (shocker!) The trackball can be used to select an icon and click on it, so that would have to be disbaled.
ok thx for the answears and sorry I crated 2 threads about this one. On the first one I messed up the thread name so I thought nobody would read it. Going back, I am talking about the button that is on the bottom of the screen, the one that pulls up all the apps. That one takes a lot of space, actually a whole row where there could be other icons instead.
So I was thinking if there is a possibility to link that menu to an actual phisical key, like pressing the scrolling ball.

Yep, that's what I thought, read my post above, it will explain why it's pointless.
actually the ahome does put 4 new icons on that bottom part but I don't know how to bind the trackball. No it would not have to be disabled the trackball action as long as there is no icon pressed. So the drawar would be pulled when the trackball would be pressed only if no icon is pressed, otherwise the icon would start
Yes because aHome moves all the other icons closer together, which would require lots of work to get launcher.apk to do the same.
dxtop has a 5 icon dock, and can deploy launcher by holding menu key.
I searched, perhaps not hard enough, but - if I'm in an application such as Opera and I'm holding the phone sideways, and I hit the Home button, I get a the home screen is clearly sideways BUT it's solid black and doesn't respond except for "Phone" "Menu" and the taskbar at the top... If I lock the phone while in landscape mode, the Lock screen is sideways but the slider sometimes doesn't respond and the background is tiled.
Is there a registry setting or cab that will allow the Home and Lock screens to auto rotate (and function normally)? In fact if I could somehow just use the phone entirely in landscape mode that would be perfect I've found older threads that say it's not possible with sense 2.5. Guess I'm just looking for clarification.
I would like to know how to do this also. I have been looking for hours and I cant find anything on it. let me know please if you find anything, and I will do the same for you.
I tried bsb tweaks and it rotates the home screen, but the background doesn't display properly and I can't click anything until I rotate it back the right way.
I could have sworn I saw someone mention on here or another site how to do this but I can't remember who or where. oh well.
thanks,
michael
Found it
I found what we were looking for. I was searching the wrong forum.
The posts title is: Manila 2.5.1922: BG4All LANDSCAPE
The post is in the HTC Leo Apps and Themes sub-forum.
Would post a link, but it won't let me.
It's a manilla modification, and I think it may require certain ROMs. I have not read through the whole thing yet just wanted to post this to you because I said I would.
I have been searching for hours in the wrong forum. Oh well at least I found it.
Later,
Michael
I just stumbled upon this feature today and it blew my mind
hold any button on the top two rows for a brief moment (usually like half a second) slide your finger up and BAM! an extended keyboard for numbers and symbols!~
why didn't they showcase stuff like this during google i/o? sugar coat it and call it 'magical' and 'amazing'?...oh wait thats...not google
Hey that's pretty cool. In fact you don't even have to hold, just swipe up straight away..
Erm unfortunately, a quick search shows that you're not the first to find out about it.

Well, hey at least I just found out about this feature in your thread eh.
May 23rd called and said they want their news back.
Hi,
Anyone know if there's a registry hack to remove the Home and Settings options from the home screen tabs at the bottom of the home screen? I actually use Settings a bit, but the Home option makes no sense to me. Not only is there a hardware button that takes you to the home screen, but as far as I can tell, the home screen tabs only appear on the home screen anyway, kinda making the option pointless! I'd prefer to put the settings option on one of my quicklinks instead to free up some space on the home screen tabs (I like a nice tidy maximum of 5 down there to prevent the need to scroll) and assume that if a registry hack exists, both options would sit in the same area.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Don't do it
There was a thread about it, but you would have to search for it. I don't remember anymore wharmt exactly the titel was.
I came from the same side and tried to remove the HomeTab.
1st point: it worked.
Sideeffect: not only the button in the slider vanished, but also the complete Homescreen.
So, it's better you leave the fingers off this topic.
If you want to find the thread, just search for all my posts (there aren't so many). This might be the easiest way to find it.

never mind, just reread your q, lol please ignore me.
careful
Only if your a pro , dont touch registries. Enjoy your phone and hope all is well.
Someone needs to develop a new home screen manager. One that instead of just moving left to right moves up and down as well. This way screens are always just one flick away instead of 2 or more depending on where you are at. It would be like a cube where the main homescreen is in the middle and the other 4 screens would each be in a direction (up, down, left, right). Moving from one of those screens in a direction (up, down, left, right) would result like moving from the home screen. So more than just a cube. A little more complex. I'll develop it if someone can help me along. Just an idea i had when looking at the linear movement of the ui.
Unfortunately I don't have any of the required skills or time to match even 1% of the ability of the Android development community but I'd definitely second this request. A very unique idea and I really like it.
BTW, a big thanks to the devel community. Without you guys fulfilling my gadget whore needs, I'd be buying a new device every week!
This is cool..maybe even an option in the notification bar to switch screens while in an app? Like the Linux desktop cube?
Sent from my Floyo Tazz using XDA App
Rather than write something from scratch, maybe you could try to contribute this as an option in ADW.Launcher?
This has already been done before on a certain rom. I remember it being ported to the vogue android. I cant remember the phone it was ported from though. Blur or something.
Gde home had exactly this feature
~ The Nameless Creator
Actually there were a few Windows CE based home mangers that had this feature. I also would love to have this. I asked a while back and got no response as to if there is anthing out there that did this.
wouldnt it be kinda hard to keep track of which screen is in which direction? like it seems orientation would feel very complex. but maybe not, i dunno

I could see something like dots on the edge of the screen kinda like how launcher pro does it.

Wait'll you see the home screen replacer I'm building based on a tesseract.

You just need to turn your head sideways to keep track of what face you're on.
Who doesn't want 24 home screens?
For a 4 or 5 way slide/cube desktop, look at Dx Top. It has not been updated for a while but is stable and can use themes built for many of the other desktop replacements.
I have been running it over many ROMs and it works on all so far. Was a little funny with the app drawer on SkyRaider, it kept rebuilding the icons for some reason, that might have been due to installing too many icon packs.
Thanks for the support on this guys and the answers. i'm going to do some research and see what can be done/ported or if needed then created. Just trying to do like most people and think outside the box. Its what makes android 1000x better than the iphone/ipod scene. They are so restricted. i mean come on. 1 button. But keeping on topic, i really appreciate no flaming on the topic.
