Does anyone know if there is a way to swap the long press and short press functions of the search soft key. I never use the actual search function, but I am constantly using the long press to access stuff. I'd love if I could simply short press for this.

Sorry if already asked before, but search did not bring the results I needed.
What I wanna do is rather simple:
Pressing long one of the hardware button will result in defined actions. e.g. like the long press on home will bring up the task manager.
The same I want to happen on the other buttons: e.g. long press the search will en/disable wifi (like the app 'in app wifi toggler'), long press of back will toggle e.g. bluetooth, long press of track pad will enable voice search, etc.
Is there such an app?
Thanks

App? No. You need root. Also, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=683902
Hunting around for solution but surprisingly all seems to be happy with button layouts. Currently my buttons are:
1) Long press SEARCH - dialer One
2) Long press HOME - visual task swither
3) Long press MENU - brings keyboard (default)
4) Long press BACK - ???
Can we assign something on long press BACK? Sleep????
Is there solution for long press MENU to assign something other than coming out with keyboard? I'm thinking about Peoples/contacts.
As for trackball, currently I'm using to wake up with a press. I don't know why but I'm really struggling almost everytime to reach and press power button on top. One more I would much prefer and very happy is to ANSWER calls with a press of trackball while at lockscreen. Perfect!
Many thanks if can point to some directions.
I'm pretty sure similar to the Home Long Press, Back and Menu Long Press are impossible to change system-wide without hacking Android itself (like Home Long Press had to be).
How to clear long press search and assign another app?

Download an app that can use Search Long Press and the next time you press it, Android will ask which app you want to use.

Or go to settings->applications->"the application" and click on "clear defaults"
anyone know of a way to remap the long press menu? It would be nice to have it mappable to offset the missing search button . i find the long press menu quite useless
You could try button remapper, It's on xda somewhere although i personally switched the call key to search.
Does people miss the search button in GSII? I'm currently considering buying either a HTC Sensation or the Samsung Galaxy SII. I have a HTC desire now, and I use the search button a lot in different applications and think I maybe will miss a dedicated search button. Does the long press menu button bring up a special search application (regardless of foreground application), or behave like a press on a regular search button?
Regards,
PK
It's like the regular search button.
You will get used to it...
Hold down the menu button

Thanks, that sounds good enough for me. I think I'll be ok as long as the long press menu action is linked to the regular Android search behaviour.

Anybody know if there is a way to map long press of the home button to launch voice search?
I'd rather map long press of menu to recent apps.
I'm rooted so I'm hoping there I something out there that can do this.
