okay. you need a total of three file. in the folder.
Do this,
1) use the Astro manager and go to /mnt/sdcard and create a folder. And name that folder "root" (all lower case). Or you can create a folder via a mounting the SDcard and using a computer.
2) Then download This File.
3) Once you download that extract the file. In that file are three scripts.
4) Move those three scripts to the folder that folder you created in step one.
5) then try your command again.
The reason it's not finding /sdcard/root is because it's simply not there. It cannot find what doesn't exist.

Also make sure its CD / not cd/

Also the root.rar file..
I extracted the root.rar file..
And got the Root folder..
Placed it into the root of my sd card..
And when I go to Terminal Emulator..
After running Visionary for root access..
I type in the Command..
"cd /sdcard/root"
And I get..
"cd: can't cd to /sdcard/root
What am I doing wrong..?..
Any pointers would be much appreciated..

Make sure phone is not connected to computer via usb cable.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Phone is not connected by usb..
Has been ejected and unplugged from computer upon adding root file..
One thing to Mention is..
In my application block I have the superuser Icon..
And I can select it and use it..
But if I go to Terminal emulator, and type su..
I get permission denied..
Although when I did try to Root the phone..
I went thru Visionary..
Checked the r/w box did the root.. on r11..
Then went to type the..
"cd /sdcard/root"
And that is when i got the..
"can't cd to /sdcard/root"
Try using Visionary 14, I was having the same issue reading the SD card figured it had to do with something with the root. I'm sure you can find the link in the forums

I had that same trouble rooting my phone. My problem was that I didn't realize that the .rar was a different type of compression and needed a different extractor. I suggest uninstall visionary and superuser. Remove the battery and reboot. Then install visionary and temp root. Then try "su" in terminal again. That should work. Make sure you are using visionary r11+ also. I made the mistake of downloading just plane r11 that doesn't have the options that are necessary to permaroot.

Thank you all for your continued support..
I am starting to feel as if my phone is unable to be rooted.. lol..
I have tried using r11+ and r14+ in order to root my phone..
Each and every time I get to the Terminal Emulator and input the first command I get the error message..
Maybe using winzip to extract the root file, is not the correct software to use..?..
If anyone still needs an answer to this question, I might have one. This issue just occurred for me on my mt4g, it was a real palmslap to the forehead when I realized what I had done. I put the files from the "root" folder into the root of the sdcard. So when it said "can't cd to /sdcard/root" it was because the folder root didn't exist and /sdcard/ held the files I wanted. In other words, put the entire folder named root onto your sd card and not just the files.
Hopefully this might help someone who made the same foolish mistake I did.

First try to cd to /sdcard. If that works type ls that is LS but lowercase. Look for root in the response. If it is not there, the directory doesn't exist.
If you can't change to /sdcard try cd /mnt/sdcard
My phone's directory structure is /mnt/sdcard.
Edit:
Just tried /sdcard, it worked. Then I tried to cd to a folder by not using proper caps, that worked too. Last I tried to cd to a folder that didn't exist and got the same error. You are telling terminal to change to a directory that does not exist, meaning, there is no folder named root on the sdcard.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
1) download the root.rar file
2) unzip to the sdcard
3) make sure the folder name is "root"
4) make sure the folder named "root" is actually in the SDcard
5) open terminal emulator
6)
Code:
su
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh
BEFORE DOING ANY OF THIS, YOU MUST HAVE ALREADY TEMP ROOTED USING VISIONARY. and when you use visionary to root, MAKE SURE USB DEBUGGING IS ON OR IT WILL NOT WORK!!
IF NOTHING WORKS FOR YOU, THEN TRY THING GFREE METHOD HERE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
the files u copied from the zip folder...save it on sdcard with the folder named root...
cd (space) sdcard/root
.sh root.sh

ADB vs. Root Explorer vs. Terminal on device

With certain files, SteelH describes using Root Explorer as "like trying to swap the engine of a car while it's running"
I experienced this as I tried to copy back a modified services.jar file with Root Explorer. I ended up using ADB and it worked fine.
Question 1: I did this while the phone was running/OS loaded, but ADB copy method worked while Root Explorer didn't. Why? Does ADB have higher authority in some way?
Question 2: How about using a terminal window on the phone to copy/replace files (if a computer is not handy)? Does it yield the same function/result as Root Explorer or ADB?
Question 3: If I simply want to back up the file, say services.jar or framework.apk, to be copied to SD, can I use Root Explorer for that?
Thanks.

i can't answer all of these authoritatively, but i will say
-i find adb to be the easiest way to do ANY modifications, as long as you know just a handful of commands and remember to remount. also remember to pull anything you are getting ready to mess with, just in case you bork it up. takes a lot less time to push an unmodified file than it does to do a complete restore. especially if you forgot to backup, lol
-if you have a terminal app mounted with rw privileges, you can move whatever you want wherever you want. however, referring back to my last point, adb is easier. i find that trying to type type type things out on a dinky little keyboard is a bigger pain in my butt than using my full size one, especially when i can use cut/paste from the intertubes.
-i think rooted explorere shouldn't have a problem copying a file from /system/ or /data/ to some folder on your sdcard
Thank you for the information. I just copied a file with terminal (on phone) and Root Explorer. Interesting thing: using the CP command, the file that was copied onto the SD showed the current date. The file that was copied using RE has the original date.

[Q] problems rooting new mt4g

hello! i am hoping someone can figure out what i am doing wrong. I am completely new to rooting phones.read lots about it but this is my first attempt.i have had help from a friend that has rooted several phones (including his mt4g) Now i just got this phone yesterday so its new with only the required apps for rooting on it.
both my friend and i have tried several times this method:
6. Run visionary to gain temp root.
7. Open terminal emulator on your device, type “su”, and hit enter to gain root privileges.
8. Type “cd /data/local” and hit enter.
9. Now type “chmod 777 gfree” and hit enter to make the program executable.
10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.
11. Wait for the program to finish and then reboot into HBoot to see if S=Off. Also, check your bootloader version. If it says s=off and has bootloader version 0.86.0000 it worked
then hit a brick wall with this step '10. Type “./gfree” and hit enter.' we get a permission denied error.
i have also tried this method several times:
5. open android terminal emulator
type in "su" then click entet (without " mark)
it will probably say permission is denied
type in "su" again, then click enter
supper user will pop up asking for permission click "allow"
type in "cd /sdcard/root" then click enter
type in "sh root.sh" then click enter
give a min or two when it says turn off and go into recovery to check if s is on or off, exit out of emulator
6. turn off the phone, then reboot into hboot by holding volume down and power button
7. it should say S=OFF
but after the reboot in step 6 it is still s-on
hboot-0.86.0000
hoping someone can help
oh and i followed the steps to a T, thanks for any info
So you are able to temproot? Does typing "su" in terminal emulator give you superuser privileges (if the prompt symbol changes to a # instead of a $, it worked)?
If so, make sure you've downloaded the gfree files and copied them to the proper place. You want the files themselves to be in /data/local on the phone. You do NOT want a folder named "gfree" containing these files. The commands should work exactly as written.
I'm the one that was helping the op. Does the gfree folder need to be renamed or does the files need to be moved out of the folder and placed in /data/local directly? I rooted with the above method in like 5 minutes but when I tried with the op we got ./gfree permission denied as stated above. Thanks for your help it's much appreciated and we'll post back with results.
that worked perfectly!! had to take the files out of the gfree and put them directly in local and rename the gfree folder something else. Thanks!
okay we got it figured out and s-off. For those wondering if you manually add the files through root explorer copy the files in the gfree folder and drag them to /data/local and paste. Do not put the gfree folder in /data/local. Thanks again jdkoren for the help!
would it work if you just put the files on your sd card instead? Also its a brand new mytouch 4g correct? Meaning bought in 2011? I just bought one and the unlockr method didnt work. Im going to try the method you guys did next and i saw a video in which the guy did the same thing (gfree version) but just changed data local to sdcard. Im just wondering because im about to root soon. Thanks.
Yes it was bought in 2011. Use the guide found here briefmobile just make sure to use root explorer and copy all the files inside the gfree folder and paste them to /data/local.

[Q] Cant find data/local

i tried the search and google but find nothing on this. Im not new to rooting, i rooted my OG droid, but now im trying to root my Mt4g and having trouble. I have the .86 boot loader and im trying to do the gfree method of rooting. Only problem is when i go to transfer my gfree files to data/local, i cant find data local. Im using astro file manager and i hit the up button to get as far as i can go. Once i do that i select the data folder, and it just says empty directory. so i can find /data, but not /data local. Thanks for taking the time to read my question.
Astro file manager will not show the /data/local folder. If you don't have root you have to push gfree using adb.
i'm on a 4g slide with this same problem, i need to move a file to the /data/local, and my file managers cannot find 'local', and do not let me create one.
i am already rooted.

you need to use a root explorer.
or use the line command
Code:
adb push <file_name> /data/local
Another thing you could do is download visionary, temp root, use a root required file manager to move the file to data/local. Then un temp your phone an run gfree
From my fist to your face, enjoy.

HELP! Can't get root...

I have rooted over 8 different myTouch4g's with no problem and I used the same s=off guide on the development forums.
I am using Visionary to gain temproot. I am able to gain temproot but when I run the terminal sh root.sh command I get this error:
insmod: init_module '/sdcard/root/wpx.ko' failed (Function not implemented)
It continues with the hboot duplication and it tells me to reboot into hboot to see if i I have S=Off...
I have done this about 20 times now and I cannot get S=OFF. I have uninstalled visionary and reinstalled it, I downloaded the root folder with files to make sure they weren't corrupted.
I still cannot get S=OFF... Another thing I notice is that Superuser sticks on my phone even after restarting it.
Any ideas??
switch to gfree instead of root.sh
work off local instead of sdcard
find the 5 minute abd thread
you just basically unzip the attachment in that thread, and put folder /adb on your PC's c: root
then you open a dos box in that directory
put the contents of gfree v0.2 zip (find the "check this out even if you're rooted" sticky) (if will be a folder named gfree_02 or something like that with like 7 files)
in the c:\adb directory so it looks like c:\adb\gfree_02
rename it gfree to make it easier
c:\adb\gfree
goto your dos box and pusg the directory to your connected phone (with usb debugging turned on)
continue to follow the "even if you're rooted" thread
use visionary 11 not 14, ive seen more failures with 14.

Or you could use a root explorer and just place them in data/local/ and continue. Its what I did. No computer involved in rooting mine
