[Q] Need help testing - Android Software Development

I created an app that uses the facebook api that allows you to see the location of friends that are sharing there location with you.
Location sharing is fully controllable, you get to set when you location is being shared and which friends can see it.
None of my facebook friends have android phones, lames I know, but I need someone to help me test. I put the app on the market but I am not getting any feedback there.
So, I am looking for a volunteer that wouldn't mind having me as a facebook friend and would mind me temporaily seeing there location. You would also be able to see mine.
The app is named Longitude, it's on the market if you would like to check it out before hand.
Thanks in advance.

whats the name of the app?

The name was in the OP, but it's called Longitude. Here is the market link

It looks like someone gave it 3 stars

No offense and I think you wrote a great app ...but (here it comes LOL) looks like a "stalker" app to me.
I'm sure you mean no harm with your app, but my god, with the amount of information that is out there about any given person these days, do you need to know where I live? I think NOT!
Granted, I know my mom's name and can look it up online and even see a picture of the house I grew up in, but..where does it stop? Sorry to use this thread as a personal rant, but really, there is just too much info out there these days...maybe I'm getting old.
Again, I think your app is great from the screenshots I saw. I've yet to get into any mapping code myself. I just don't like the "Big Brother" aspect of it.

I took inspiration from Google Latitude, I liked Latitude but I use my email mostly for business and thought that an app like this would be more fitting with Facebook. There was no such app so I decided to make it.
I completely understand where you are coming from though, it is a somewhat scary app. When I first starting working on it I was just going to broadcast the location to all friends that used the app.
Then I thought about it and realized that I wouldn't want my location available to everyone all the time. So I made it so you can turn the service off.
Then I thought that I don't want everyone on my friends list being able to see where I am either so I made it so only selected friends can view your location. I also do not log any location information.
But, I think the benefits of such an app can outweigh the negatives, and if people are responsible about sharing their location then it shouldn't be able to be used as a stalker tool.

Phantasm Music Player

Updated the DBC so I've pulled the cab that was here. I don't want to post another cab since at least one person was way too confused to figure it out without the docs (5-pg PDF). But at least for that confused guy, the DBC is even simpler now.
... and then there were nine
The user guide is nice and short, too, only at 20pgs not as short as before, but it's got pretty pictures this time. Since I can't attach it on this very old post, I've made a new post and (maybe, if it works) put it there (the UG that is, since last time I didn't have the space).
i cant access to your homepage for more detail,
pls check it
thanks
Here is the homepage of the music player, if that is what you wanted:
http://phantasm.40th.com/
homepage doesn't work, do you have another link?
This is so not worthy of my time.
1. Build a website that actually works. With enough screenshots.
2. Make a trial version that doesn't make me want to kill the author. Seriously? Email 4 lines of number-garbage just to test it for few minutes? Look down from your tower of babel, there are people with lives down here.
3. The moment your database configuration tool (good luck explaining that to a average user) requested for moving and rebuilding my storage card, i just cancelled everything. You might want to make it more understandable. I guess it's for telling the software where the music is.
Edit: Here, i shot a quick video of the parts that i did manage to test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZJa87Gsl1Y
Thanks for the video (I like the soundtrack! ), so I don't have to waste my... er... test the progam myself.
I love this video
Your hands speaks a lot of words in this video

btw:the sound is lovely too
Add throw-scrolling via finger/thumb (ala Iphone) and album art scrolling to this app, and I'll pay your price.
respect for 40iplay..

It won't work - the vast majority of the world is banned from there. According to the developer, most people are plain criminals; this is why they're banned from his site.

It sucks that people come out with great products like this, but then get discouraged b/c people like you post crap like this. Did you really have a hard time figuring this out? Maybe get an iPhone instead of windows mobile. It took me all of 2 minutes to figure it out and catalog all of the music on my 8525. You ask this person to look down from their tower 'cuz people have a real life and cant copy and paste 4 lines into an email (5 seconds at most...learn how to use your device), yet you have time to post a video on YouTube and even add a musical background.
Get real. Think? Problem solve? Read? All of the above i guess.

Actually, we're in the same boat. If you read my past generic multimedia-related articles, I've recommended iPlay the most because of its 1, excellent CPU usage 2, groundbreaking reverb effect, which really enhances ALL kinds of content.
However, the developer, it seems, considers everyone outside the U.S. criminal... he hasn't even answered my mails where I've told him I'd pay for his stuff to be reviewed and I'm not asking for a freebie (I've purchased the full Pocket Music, both the PPC and the Symbian versions of CorePlayer and Nero Mobile Digital so that I can review them without always asking for review copies. (Yeah, it was too late when I noticed Pocket Music actually had a full-working trial version. No problem, at least I contributed to the player's future development.)) ...
All in all, I'm absolutely sure you won't be able to actually buy a copy of his stuff either - if you can't access his homepage (because, in most cases, you're outside the U.S.), then, you're a criminal. Just like me and a lot of AximSite folks. According to him, of course.
Tested the demo - indeed it's even more crippled than past iPlay 5 demos. You MUST request a trial code from their homepage in order to even make it run (to pass the initial screen - if you just close it, then, any menu operation will result in an immediate exit). This completely sucks.
All in all, it's a no-go for the Multimedia Bible either.

So I'm thinking you're either a mindless fanboy or probably the author himself using a fake username. It doesn't matter how good your software is, dude. You're never going to make any money off it because the simple fact of the matter is that you're a douche.

I am Making A Website

I'm making a site, called market4android which you developers can feature your apps/roms on, etc. I'd love for you guys to contact me so we can get the ball rolling. It's a great domain that gets a lot of search engine hits, so if you're looking to get your name out there and get your apps out there, then please PM me and let me know what you have and all that cool stuff!
The site should be online for most of the world. If it is not, give it a while because it may still need to update on world servers.
Check it out, leave feedback, etc, and developers! hit me up and let me know if I can post your ROMs on the site. Don't want nobody getting mad at me!
Reminds me of a site that I frequent called XDA.
Maybe I am missing the point? Are you simply offering to host files?

You'll never get anywhere waiting for others to send you content. If you want to post a rom, post info, screenshots, etc. and link out to the post where they can get it and more info.
This may be a dumb question, but here goes anyway....
It's not hard at all to get an app included on the Android Market. What advantage are you offering over going that route?
So far I've only written a few Android apps, and they were both custom jobs for clients that would not be at all interesting to the general public. (And they have a LOT of tweaking left to do before I'd call them anything I'm proud of. I'm new to Android, it'll take awhile for me to catch up with the stuff I've done for WinMo and PalmOS.)
But I've considered diving into some more generally appealing projects, and the Android Market currently offers me both the ability to distribute for free, and the ability to monetize my efforts if I decide to go that route. Either route gives me pretty widespread exposure.
As a developer, my main question would be: "What extras are you offering that the existing marketplace leaves out?" (i.e. How can you make me more money? And/or give me wider exposure?)
I don't think he is making a place to distribute apps (at least that's not what I got), I thought he was making a place to be like "hey look what's going on in the dev community, check out this app and this rom, etc."

So a review site?
That could be very, very cool. Only trick is building a large readership.....
With that in place, it could very easily be something that developers want to pay close attention to.

I'd definitely be letting developers have publisher accounts so they can work on getting exposure from my site, etc. It's not totally about me distributing apps...
Try to picture this: I can get traffic. Traffic coming to my site and seeing your apps there, your ROMs there, etc, want to download them, etc, well, not only gets you not only exposure, but income from the apps as well seeing as how they're downloading you stuff because they found info and reviews on it on my site.
Yes, the market would definitely be the #1 way to go, but what harm can it do to get some more exposure to your stuff? as well as get user reviews and the income that youre concerned about?

I will create mirrors for your files etc, and yes, you are missing the point. I wasn't 100% absolute sure in the direction I was heading with this, but I am offering you the exposure of traffic that comes to my site to see your apps etc, when they may not have ever noticed your app in the marketplace. User reviews, developer releases and all kinds of cool **** can happen here if you're willing to crack the shell away a little bit and accept my offer of free exposure to your stuff.
Why the hell would anyone pass up free? Beats me.

For the record, my comments were not meant to be disparaging, but to help you figure that out.
I'm not going to go into how old I am, but I'm not exactly wet behind the ears. I was making a living in the "computer field" since long before anything called a "web browser" ever existed. The first time I heard about Mosaic, my reaction was "eh, sounds like gopher with pictures. big deal." (It wasn't a great article....)
There are two main reasons why projects fail. The first, and by far the greatest, is because the people starting that project never ask themselves, and come up with a clear answer to, "what problem am I trying to solve?"....
The second reason is that they fail to ask themselves "Is my solution something people will actually use?".
If you have good answers to those two questions, then the rest is just the legwork of getting it done. If you don't have good answers to those questions, then no amount of work will produce a successful outcome.
Sorry if I sound harsh, just trying to be helpful.

Not harsh at all and I comprehend your points. Maybe my tone sounded harsh when it was simply factual and jsut telling my purpose.
I feel that the purpose of this site I opened is good, and it can be very useful. But just like any other good thing, it usually cannot be done by one person. Support for the project is always a plus, and it can be made to be an excellent resource for people who are green on both sides, that want to get into modding android devices.
I dont think that it is a waste of my time, but in order for it to make it to where I'd like it to be, it can definitely use all the support and input that it can get. Thats why I brought the whole subject up, here. There are lots of developers here and even I am new to a lot of the stuff here, and I feel that it would be a great asset to a lot fo folks here if you jsut give it a chance.

Oh, I never meant to imply it was a waste of time. Nothing of the sort. I think the Android platform has a huge amount of potential. For the people developing the platform, for the people developing apps to run on top of it, and for people creating the entire ecosystem that will surround it.
I guess what I was trying to do was get you thinking about a statement that you ended up making yourself. That you weren't 100% sure about the direction you wanted to take this. Whatever direction you decide on, I think your chances of success are much greater if you have a clear idea of what that direction is.
That said, I like your idea. I'd love to hear more about what you have in mind.

well an app review site would be great as i tend to follow users input when i download apps, and the input in the Market is just crap .. what some user find to be a bad app could actualy be a very good app for others. i sometime do it myself when i download an app , i look for user rating and comments. and decide wether to download the app or not, based on the user ratings..
The other thing would be a app request, meaning i been loking for an app that will play FLAC or AAC music files, i found 2 , 1 is from XDA ( a good app but the GUI is must to be desired ) the other is a cheap app that sometimes plays sometimes dont.. LOL
if someone would make good app for this i would be willing to pay for it 20.00 if i had to ...
The point is i would love a place that i could go to and request an app or suggest ideas for an app..
my 2 cents

You're able t request apps and stuff there, I honestly havent set that section up because I am working on other content first. You can possibly post a new thread requesting someone code something for you, but I am not sure on the pricing of their work, etc. Let me work on getting some good app coders on my side and then I'll open up the requests section.

WallpaperGate may be a conspiracy against Android reputation...

A few blog and newspaper are reporting the discovery disclosed by 2 Apple hacker at blackhat conference. (if they are not apple fanboy then they sure look like they are)
http://mobile.venturebeat.com/2010/...-steals-your-data-was-downloaded-by-millions/
As much as I do care about data security and think that some people may not be careful enough about what they carry on their phone, I dislike reading such story without much proof, I truly hope Google will put an end to this by posting something about it.
The funny part is that the application made by their company (lookout) is asking for MUCH MORE right than the wallpaper they are pinpointing, I am also wondering about their genome project and I am wondering if they used that "virus scanner" to gather application info from the people who used it (that being said without any proof, just my gut feeling exactly like their theory on those wallpaper)
On a more positive side I hope this will raise some people awareness about what they install on their phone even rom's could one day get compromised but I do not think we are there yet...
So the whole point of this post is to ask all the blogger around to get back to those 2 security researcher and ask them to provide proof (source code) of the malware they found so that we can put an end to this story either way...
The more people will switch from the Apple to Android, the more hate and dirt there will be about Android.
It's just getting started.
Personally, it's fun to watch, they gonna lose anyway.

I do respect apple for bringing some great innovation but I am concerned about the lack of quality coverage I see in some blog and online news paper, I mean nobody seem to have asked proof or a second opinion on quite a few recent post (like the 80% of android user would not buy another one story...)
As for the winner or looser, as long as user win I am fine with this war...
I saw this and it seems like propaganda....they took all the time to write the article but neglected to mention the application name.

They did publish the name of the app, In fact a LOT of different one since this is simply a program that download wallpaper from various theme. the guy have flooded the market with all of the different theme he offer.
http://www.androidcentral.com/rogue-android app-stealing-data-according-security-firm#comments
If you look at the update they wrote to change a bit the story of what the application does, the developer seem to be a bit lost about this.
Either way if this app is really a malware then they should have contacted google, and they should have published the EXACT description of what they do, instead they talk about their market analysis ...
Some fact, about time!
http://blog.mylookout.com/2010/07/mobile-application-analysis-blackhat/#more-1380
Here's the developer answer so android central http://www.scribd.com/mobile/documents/35072457
Now let's see if Google has something to say about this WallPaperGate... in the mean time it look like they SUSPENDED all the developer app
Personally I have no problem with those wallpaper app, I do not use lookout tho since I believe it's asking for too much right and I am not convinced it does something at all
How about "flickey wallpaper" ? I use that one, and it rhymes with the listed application.

Hey thanks for pointing this program (flikie) it's great!
The right requested by flikie are quite normal so I installed it, I do not use picture as wallpaper usually but I do like to watch them!
Back to the topics, I think the developpers in general should review their apps and make sure they do not ask for undue right!
Application to protect yourself
I personally use aSpotCat to screen what the application are using as right on my nexus one, it is free and allow you to revise the right of installed app
If you know of other app that can prevent malware from spreading please post them
thats how it is in an open system. some people will exploit it.
thats a trade off of the android market.... we will get spyware eventually.
I agree with antikryst... this happens on any platform. Don't look like iPhans and deny the truth and deflect the blame. These guys may or may not have an agenda, but they didn't "seem" to make this stuff up.
I call partly BS
The wallpaper apps in question cannot access your contact's phone numbers, SMS messages or personal information.
Check out the manifest permissions on the apps in question. It is the last item that is the problem.
!Storage
modify Delete
!Your location
coarse (network-based) location
!Network communication
full Internet access
!Phone calls
read phone state and identity
The permission only allows the app to read the IMEI number of your phone (your hardware's unique identifying number), your phone number, and your currently programmed voice-mail number. If you hard coded your voice-mail password as part of your voice-mail number, then they have that too.
They shouldn't be stealing this info, and Google should separate "read phone state" from "read identity", but the stories on this app stating that your SMS's and contacts being stolen and sent to China just plain wrong.

And, unfortunately, that stemmed from the original article written at VentureBeat being incorrect. The presenters never actually said SMS and browser history were compromised. I know that at least Engadget was contacted and informed that the article at VentureBeat was incorrect, and VentureBeat also corrected their article to indicate that SMSs and browser histories were not being compromised. But at the start, it was too late, and from there, it was a game of telephone.
Here is a blog post by one of the presenters to clarify everything.

What a douche bag. The initial commentary about the apps was essentially "It's stealing you babies and your babie's babie's babies".
But I guess actually telling what the app actually does is a little less exciting than what they did.

Important privacy information!!!!!

Everyone go to spokeo.com and get yourself removed from a very intrusive collection of your e-activities and info... peep it out it is crazy.... remove yourself by going to privacy on bottom right corner of your corresponding listing!!!!!!! not kidding look for yourself!!!!!!!
hmm... creepy
i didn't have much info available, but i deleted my listings anyway. thanks for the heads up
I didn't show up at all.
Holy crap ive got two listings there. It knows my full name, my address, my parents name. This is **** its stolen identity paradise.
Fear the beard...
This has what to do with the Vibrant?
what the hell, it found 89 conversations i had in MSN LIVE on there.... WHAT THE ****. how do i remove this ****?
By the time you put your name and phone number in there if they didn't have you to begin with they do now I was not found on it at all but ya never know
There are several similar sites on the net, such as Zaba. All the info is collected from public record searches or culled from posts to sites accessible via web bots. sometimes the info can be wildly wrong (like it shows my son is 30 years older than me - pretty sure that's wrong - unless he's got a time machine).
Think about what Google knows about you.....
WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE.........Resistance is Futile YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED !!!!
People every thing you EVER put on the net is open game....... every time you sign up , buy, put an ad in Craigslist,,,,,, or ANYTHING... it is forever........and the algorithms can cross verify who you are........... so there is no anonymous anymore get used to it ..........And that is why you do put lame **** on the web it can come back to haunt you
I'm such an optimist aren't I ? just another Dale Carnegie

Agreed...

Spokeo owes its continued popularity, great SEO ranking, and quite possibly the collection of your basic information (aka your search input) to the paranoid masses. Even this well-intentioned albeit misplaced thread on XDA promotes and sends more people to them. Who's to say that the very act of looking yourself up or giving them the details to be removed doesn't actually send that information to their partner sites.
I recommend the Mods delete these thread.
That was my exact thought. Even if I did have information there... Well it's likely somewhere else anyway.

Everyone help join in and make google do this!!!!

guys, i started a discussion on GOOGLES FORUM regarding the implementation of google voice. PLEASE, add this. I use this so much, as do my colleagues, that im baffled by it not being used, especially since we all have ported numbers, it would be picture perfect. even if you dont have it....please just agree on the forum for them to add it so they can see the consumer need of it.
thank you CLICK BELOW (also please respond on this thread to let us all know you are helping the cause)

I would be tempted to PAY people to post there, I am so sick of them NOT adding these functions to the tablets due to US carrier greed and stupidity.
posted there...
Its moving fast!
Thank you guys. keep it going, google will listen. and even IF they were going to implement it...this will help them let us know..cause honestly..the suspense is killer.
Lets Go!

Help me understand how you want to use this with the Xoom. I know a little about Google Voice but I do not integrate it with my current phone... only play with it on the side.
Ok I read that thread. Someone help me understand something... do you guys want to carry around your Xoom and use it as your phone? Why?
I have no plans to stop using my Nexus One. I feel like a loser because I don't understand the big deal here. Someone explain it to me like I'm a child.
jesus christ no
ok clearly you dont get it. not a big deal.
its more then that, lets say im on my tablet, phone not near me
voice mails get transcribed/organized from it as well as textmessages (that are done through data!)
everything can be starred, controlled and archived
meaning you can organize your information on a much better level.
you can control how a voicemail are answered for particular people, have a do not disturb time as well.
you can download voice mails and phonecall recordings, and mail them.
its not so i can have a oversized phone. its just much, much more than that, and so convenient, so i can have that information on me and control it.
I hope this helped. you should try youtubing google voice videos to see just how amazing it is.
if you dont find it to fit your needs i understand (or you probably didnt really read more into it, i just got into it last year and pretty much got ALOT of people in it as well)
please help at least on the forum, much appreciated.
Yes, I'm looking forward to the day I can hold my Xoom to my head while walking through NYC and talking to my friends
I use GV on my ipad as I'll get text messages on that number. The GV client is for the iphone and doesn't scale up as nicely but it works. Also, I find it easier to listen to email and take notes on the larger screen.
Posted. Thanks for the link, that was quick and simple to add a reply on.
Lets cross our fingers!
I would've put money on this being an app Google would've included with the launch of 3.0. Posted.
thanks.

Totally needs to be ported over.

Yeah can't believe that it's not implemented...posted
Off to throw in my comment. Count me into the people who don't use GV for voice, but for SMS and retrieving my VoiceMail. I'm in Europe a couple of times a year and this lets me stay connected to people in the States as it all works on WiFi too.
I'll bet that the only reason the .APK is FCing is 'cause it's tripping over the APIs needed for telephony, which probably aren't in a tablet-only codebase (right now). It might be as simple (OK, probably not ) as commenting that code out?
How about you just use it via the browser for now? Like how it was done on iPhone before apple let the app on the market.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
... because if I'm going to have to manually check my browser every few minutes to see if I've gotten an SMS, it somewhat defeats the point doncha think? I've moved nearly everything that sends SMS (even my credit cards and my airlines) to GV SMS because you're not tied to any particular carrier.
Luckily I'm still carrying an Android phone so I get my notifications there, but I've piled on in the request thread so that they can hopefully get what must be a relatively-straightforward fix in before I have to leave the States again- I'd like to be able to use my Xoom for everything while abroad.
keep it going
decent amount of people have posted, im surpised google mods havent replied. ive seen them do some swift replies else where for the most part too...intresting
I've never used it but there again, I've never owned an Android-based device. Just wanted to support your endeavors!
